Or did it ever?
For me, I think the last truly great storyline was the Marlena/John/Susan/Kristen saga from 1996-1997. James E. Reilly was the king of payoffs at that time.

J.E.R. was over the top and sometimes could let his outlandish impulses get the best of him, but when he was good, he was good. Today’s fake Kristen and her pining for Brady is a long way from Kristen trapping Marlena in the Secret Room (TM) so that she could keep John to herself.

Been a life long Days watcher. I sort of checked out during the Last Blast years and then returned for the Salem Stalker storyline then checked out again after it was revealed they were all alive. Jim Reilly was a master. He knew how to craft a story with stakes and payoffs. Everyone talks about the Possession story like it was so awful, but it was nothing more than a DID storyline to get viewers hooked on the show's main love story.
Today the show is hit and miss. A lot of problems are budget related and a writer who leans to the campier aspects of soap opera, but it's still watchable and apparently a streaming hit so it keeps chugging along. It's like an old friend who's always there.

As much as I like Eileen Davidson, I gave up on Days when it started having her play Mary Moira, Penelope, and Thomas. Susan was bad enough, but the gimmick got really old, really quick!
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 26, 2021 3:38 PM |
Reilly's second go-around in 2003-04 had some powerful moments.
Digest blew 12 days before it aired that Marlena was the killer but ratings went up as each Salemite bit the dust.
We were introduced to bodacious Bonnie at this point -- her faceoffs with Julie were classic. (Reilly really didn't have story for her in the 1990s but he used her plenty in 03 and 04.)
But, there was nothing like DAYS 1980-85. Great stuff. Romance. Adventure. Family. Love.

by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 26, 2021 6:33 PM |
R9, she wasn't; it appeared to be here; the killer killed about 7 people or so and then we see the killer take her mask off and we see Marlena.
Not only did everyone come back from the dead but it was revealed that Marlena wasn't the killer after all.
When all the characters were wondering how this happened, someone said it was a "DiMera hoax"; Julie quipped "WHAT ELSE?"
I love it when characters respond to the insanity that they're experiencing; no one will ever know for sure if Reilly was going to do that all along. Some say yes, others, no. I know he brought Julian back through a back door to/from hell on Passions so...it was in his wheelhouse.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 26, 2021 6:34 PM |
R11, Bonnie fought with Maggie but Julie too;
One time, Bonnie made a crack about Julie's age (nearly 20 years ago!) and Julie snapped back "you should look so good at my age."
Funny.

When I was a teenager, I thought some of the magical storylines were enthralling...like when John Black found the special binoculars that let him see where Marlena was. (I think she was imprisoned by Stephano at the time.)
But Stephano was a mustache-twirling supervillain who never, ever paid for his crimes. His use of supernatural powers grew to be comical and downright embarrassing compared to more realistic villains like Victor Kiriakis (greedy and grudge-holding) and Vivian Alamain (crazy and funny).
I stopped watching during the devil possession storyline. I watched the show in a college dorm lounge, and I was embarrassed when people came into the room to buy something out of the vending machine, looked at the TV, and snickered. And of course John Black just happened to be a former priest so that he could perform the exorcism that saved Marlena's soul.
I eventually switched to watching Passions. At least Passions knew it was a campy show and never pretended to be otherwise.

It is so hard to believe what great melodrama Days was from 1967-the mid 70's. Super Couple mania started the downward slide. Super Villains running wild, the show going to an hour all ruined it. Deidre Hall mined her popularity into power unlike any other soap star. She should have been a producer. The # of times this shrink has been kidnapped, impersonated etc, are pure camp. And crap.

All My Children was the only soap I really watched on a regular basis, but would sometimes catch a random Days episode on work from home days when making/eating lunch (since sadly AMC was long gone - or maybe not so sadly, it did not have a pretty last 5 to 10 years).
One time John Black was finding out about his real parentage with an Irish Shirley Jones. Then a few years later, there was some how some Asian family heritage, which I am not sure made a lot of sense. I remember thinking at that time, the man is closing in on 70, does he really need another whose the Daddy storyline?
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 7, 2021 8:52 PM |
R63 That was Yo Ling who was a white man named Tim Robicheaux who faked his death during the Korean War. "Adopted an asian" persona and then created a secret assassin organization. Yo Ling wanted his son John's blood to create a treatment for the disease he was suffering from which in turn would probably kill John. Yo Ling also tried to have gay Paul brainwashed into becoming one of his assassins but also infected him with a virus with the intention of having Paul spread virus to others.

The last time I saw Marlena, on the surface it seems like she has had some good facial work done and does not seem too tightly pulled back, but her eyes often seem closed or half closed. I think that is somewhat emphasized by the big false eye lashes she is wearing - so that is all you see. I know she can be a decent actress, but there are times when she seems like she has just taken some tranquilizers when she does her scenes -- not exactly animated.

The entire JER 90s period was all jump the shark and yet oddly addicting
It was dumbed down soap opera for sure but it made you want to watch the next day
But there was this feeling among longtime fans and even fellow soap people in the industry that DAYS was going too far under Reilly and that he was ruining the legacy and history of the sho I remember Agnes Nixon, creator of AMC and OLTL, bashing DAYS in the mid 90s and saying “I used to watch it everyday, as I thought it was brilliant when Bill Bell wrote it, but it’s the worst example of the negative things that people think of when they think of soap opera “

Ben, the necktie killer, now with a heart of gold, and he and Ciara fall in love. There's no way in hell they would've let him out, have people accept him and much less have him and Ciara fall in love.
His character became so evil, and I find a few good deeds would hardly make him reformed in other people's eyes, but most fans are eating this storyline up.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | September 8, 2021 8:35 PM |
R73 it's mainly a certain sect of fans that eating it up and because Albert seems to have huge hard on for Ben along with Ron. Albert is behind pushing Ben to the front and center along with having Ciara act like a super annoying shrew who gets in people's faces to berate them over Ben.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | September 8, 2021 10:55 PM |
I remember that R64 and a few people saying that the entire storyline bordered on the verge of being yellowface and it almost seeming like Paul was going to brainwashed into being "straight". Since one of the reasons why Dina Higley was brought back was to get rid of all the gays, who were blamed for driving away longtime,"stealing" screen time from vets and didn't want to see gays kissing, having "pornographic" sex in a shower or hotel or getting married.

by Anonymous | reply 77 | September 11, 2021 4:39 AM |
I decided to watch Beyond Salem just because I kind of miss watching daytime soaps (watched AMC until about five years before it went off the air). I know a little about Days from when people watched in college and occasionally try to catch an episode while making lunch but have never completely got sucked in, so take my comments with a grain of satlt.
Was not exactly soap writing at its best, but what stuck out to me is how they are trying really hard to make Ben and Ciara this big supercouple and really do a bit of overkill of how awesome they are. They are pretty people and have a bit of charisma, but all of their love scenes seemed a bit forced -- look hot and passionate they - that they was not a lot of real fire. Austin and Carrie came off more as a real couple who were in love in their bedroom scene. Also, it seems like Ciara could be a tiresome character if overused.
Shane, John, and Marlena all look good for their age, but their time for action scenes might be in the past.
Speaking of reformed killers, one of the things that might have pushed me a way from AMC is when they took Ryan's sociopath brother, Jonathan and reformed him via brain tumor. After the surgery he acted like he was mentally handicapped and acted like a child and kept defending himself by saying "they cut the bad out". They also tried to pair this "reformed" killer with Jack's sheltered, autistic minor daughter. I think the actress was about 16 at the time and the actor a good ten years older, which added a bit of skeevy subtext to a skeevy paring.
Ryan did not have good luck with siblings, one was a rapist who allowed Ryan to be arrested for his crime, one was a serial killer, and his sister was killed by another serial killer. Speaking of characters that someone behind the scenes really tried to make the lead of the show to the shows detriment. He was ok as a charming cad supporting character, not so much as a tortured, smug leading man.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | September 11, 2021 1:20 PM |
Because R78 one of the executive producers on Days has boner for Ben and Ciara and has been determined to ram them down viewers throats even at the expense of other characters.
