When did Days of Our Lives jump the shark?

Or did it ever?

For me, I think the last truly great storyline was the Marlena/John/Susan/Kristen saga from 1996-1997. James E. Reilly was the king of payoffs at that time.

by Anonymousreply 110June 9, 2022 11:43 PM

Whenever that storyline where Marlena was possessed started. Or the one where she was held captive by Stefano.

by Anonymousreply 1July 25, 2021 9:46 AM

by Anonymousreply 2July 25, 2021 11:36 AM

J.E.R. was over the top and sometimes could let his outlandish impulses get the best of him, but when he was good, he was good. Today’s fake Kristen and her pining for Brady is a long way from Kristen trapping Marlena in the Secret Room (TM) so that she could keep John to herself.

by Anonymousreply 3July 25, 2021 11:47 AM

The show started to go off the rails in the late 90s with Swamp Girl/Princess Gina/teen crap.

by Anonymousreply 4July 26, 2021 1:14 PM

OP, I only watched the show for a couple of years, starting in about 1994-1995. Remind me of the storyline you’re referencing.

by Anonymousreply 5July 26, 2021 1:33 PM

Been a life long Days watcher. I sort of checked out during the Last Blast years and then returned for the Salem Stalker storyline then checked out again after it was revealed they were all alive. Jim Reilly was a master. He knew how to craft a story with stakes and payoffs. Everyone talks about the Possession story like it was so awful, but it was nothing more than a DID storyline to get viewers hooked on the show's main love story.

Today the show is hit and miss. A lot of problems are budget related and a writer who leans to the campier aspects of soap opera, but it's still watchable and apparently a streaming hit so it keeps chugging along. It's like an old friend who's always there.

by Anonymousreply 6July 26, 2021 1:42 PM

As much as I like Eileen Davidson, I gave up on Days when it started having her play Mary Moira, Penelope, and Thomas. Susan was bad enough, but the gimmick got really old, really quick!

by Anonymousreply 7July 26, 2021 3:38 PM

Reilly's second go-around in 2003-04 had some powerful moments.

Digest blew 12 days before it aired that Marlena was the killer but ratings went up as each Salemite bit the dust.

We were introduced to bodacious Bonnie at this point -- her faceoffs with Julie were classic. (Reilly really didn't have story for her in the 1990s but he used her plenty in 03 and 04.)

But, there was nothing like DAYS 1980-85. Great stuff. Romance. Adventure. Family. Love.

by Anonymousreply 8July 26, 2021 3:42 PM

Why was Marlena a serial killer?

by Anonymousreply 9July 26, 2021 6:16 PM

Second episode

by Anonymousreply 10July 26, 2021 6:18 PM

I don't remember her fights with Julie... I thought they were with Maggie

by Anonymousreply 11July 26, 2021 6:33 PM

R9, she wasn't; it appeared to be here; the killer killed about 7 people or so and then we see the killer take her mask off and we see Marlena.

Not only did everyone come back from the dead but it was revealed that Marlena wasn't the killer after all.

When all the characters were wondering how this happened, someone said it was a "DiMera hoax"; Julie quipped "WHAT ELSE?"

I love it when characters respond to the insanity that they're experiencing; no one will ever know for sure if Reilly was going to do that all along. Some say yes, others, no. I know he brought Julian back through a back door to/from hell on Passions so...it was in his wheelhouse.

by Anonymousreply 12July 26, 2021 6:34 PM

R11, Bonnie fought with Maggie but Julie too;

One time, Bonnie made a crack about Julie's age (nearly 20 years ago!) and Julie snapped back "you should look so good at my age."

by Anonymousreply 13July 26, 2021 6:34 PM

They heyday was 1965-1980.

Didn't Marlena kill annoying Alice but shoving donuts down her throat? And bludgeon alcoholic Maggie with a wine bottle? Lol, what a bitch

by Anonymousreply 16July 27, 2021 1:05 AM

I gave up on it when the twins (was it Cassie and Eric?) came down in a space ship. That was stupid AF. At least the Marlena possession was fun.

by Anonymousreply 17July 27, 2021 2:55 AM

The Salem Stalker storyline started off compelling, but got sillier as it went along - which led to the potentially awesome Salem Island storyline, but all the campy nonsense killed it. I felt that JER was writing with contempt by this point.

by Anonymousreply 18August 2, 2021 3:28 PM

My Mom started watching Days in the late 60s. I would watch it when I was home sick from school, then when I would come home to visit after graduating from college. I think maybe it was the Marlena being possessed that sent it into the twilight zone.

How can you guys watch such shit?

When Marlena was kept in that gilded cage by Stephano, was there room for a shitter?

by Anonymousreply 21August 2, 2021 5:07 PM

The stupid serial killer/New Salem storyline.

by Anonymousreply 22August 2, 2021 8:29 PM

After Marlena gets pregnant in her 60s and doesn't know who the father is...

by Anonymousreply 23August 2, 2021 8:32 PM

R23 When that storyline happenend, I thought they were going to pull a Rachel from AW and have her end up having twins.

by Anonymousreply 25August 2, 2021 8:48 PM

Marlena possessed by the devil and John Black being her exorcist priest was fucking awesome. That was peak Days.

by Anonymousreply 26August 2, 2021 9:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 27August 2, 2021 9:10 PM

The Carrie / Austin / Sami / Lucas quadrangle that lasted about ten years.

Also: Wayne Northrop leaves the show. Drake Hogestyn joins the show as Roman after plastic surgery. Northrop comes back. He's Roman again, so now Drake H is a different character, John Black Then Northrop quits. Again.

by Anonymousreply 28August 2, 2021 9:11 PM

I used to watch Days every day as a kid in the 80s and was devastated when Wayne Northrup left/ Roman fell off a cliff haha

by Anonymousreply 29August 2, 2021 9:13 PM

Not only were they killed but they were all transported ot a second Salem. I remember the reveal when Marlena was killed and there was Alice sitting next to her on a bench in Salem knitting. Hello dear. Then he got Passions and just went full tilt nutso.

by Anonymousreply 30August 2, 2021 9:39 PM

[quote] When Marlena was kept in that gilded cage by Stephano, was there room for a shitter?

And wasn’t that a stolen plot line from Y&R in the 80’s where Lisa kept Brad in a cage until he agreed to fuck her?

by Anonymousreply 31August 2, 2021 11:00 PM

r31 - no she was his ex-wife and kidnapped Brad and kept him in a giant bird cage.

by Anonymousreply 32August 2, 2021 11:15 PM

[quote] no she was his ex-wife and kidnapped Brad and kept him in a giant bird cage.

Right. She kept Brad, her ex husband, in the cage until he agreed to fuck her. That story line fueled many of my pubescent fantasies.

by Anonymousreply 33August 2, 2021 11:18 PM

Brad was the pool boy who courted Fat Tracey, (who really was not that fat, probably a Milwaukee 10, LA 5) and Lauren was jealous so she dug into Brad's past and contacted Lisa who turned out to be psyhco. Lauren ended up saving him I think. Lauren should have been careful her karma came back in the form of Shelia Carter.

by Anonymousreply 34August 2, 2021 11:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 38August 3, 2021 1:47 AM

It peaked with Reilly’s first stint as HW, but I don’t think it ever jumped. They do the best they can with the budget they have. Every five years since Reilly they’ll almost get canceled and then randomly get their shit together for like 6 months before falling apart again.

by Anonymousreply 39August 3, 2021 1:49 AM

R29, Roman's death rhuewinned thanksgiving that year.

Over a decade later, I knew people crying about Bobby on NYPD BLUE dying and I was like shut up. You don't know PAIN until you think of Marlena raising little Samantha and Eric alone.

by Anonymousreply 41August 3, 2021 2:13 AM

'CARRIE IS A FUCKING BITCH WHO MUST GO' is an excellent summation of that story.

by Anonymousreply 42August 3, 2021 3:46 AM

In college we would have "lunch" in our dorm's breakroom--lunch being a euphemism for smoking a bowl. It was during the Marlena possession storyline. We'd mute the tv and say really, REALLY filthy things that Marlena was thinking, in the Pazuzu Exorcist voice of course.

Our demon Marlena really wanted John Black to chow down on her hairy devil pussy!

I still laugh out loud thinking about those days.

by Anonymousreply 43August 3, 2021 3:53 AM

[quote] I still laugh out loud thinking about those days.

by Anonymousreply 44August 3, 2021 3:56 AM

When I was a teenager, I thought some of the magical storylines were enthralling...like when John Black found the special binoculars that let him see where Marlena was. (I think she was imprisoned by Stephano at the time.)

But Stephano was a mustache-twirling supervillain who never, ever paid for his crimes. His use of supernatural powers grew to be comical and downright embarrassing compared to more realistic villains like Victor Kiriakis (greedy and grudge-holding) and Vivian Alamain (crazy and funny).

I stopped watching during the devil possession storyline. I watched the show in a college dorm lounge, and I was embarrassed when people came into the room to buy something out of the vending machine, looked at the TV, and snickered. And of course John Black just happened to be a former priest so that he could perform the exorcism that saved Marlena's soul.

I eventually switched to watching Passions. At least Passions knew it was a campy show and never pretended to be otherwise.

by Anonymousreply 45August 3, 2021 4:06 AM

R43 lmao. That sounds amazing. I was a little kid during that storyline. Perhaps this is why I’m a strange adult 😈

It is so hard to believe what great melodrama Days was from 1967-the mid 70's. Super Couple mania started the downward slide. Super Villains running wild, the show going to an hour all ruined it. Deidre Hall mined her popularity into power unlike any other soap star. She should have been a producer. The # of times this shrink has been kidnapped, impersonated etc, are pure camp. And crap.

More recently, the actress playing Sarah Horton-as-Kristen-in-a-Sarah-mask didn't appear to be playing a dual role. I swear I was watching someone have a manic episode on network TV.

by Anonymousreply 60September 7, 2021 3:54 AM

I was working on the production staff of another soap opera and an intern saw Queen Dee on the cover of a magazine and SCREAMED out "MARLENA!!"

by Anonymousreply 61September 7, 2021 8:01 PM

Andre said once about John: "Ah, yes...John Black. The man with so many origins and no personality."

by Anonymousreply 62September 7, 2021 8:02 PM

All My Children was the only soap I really watched on a regular basis, but would sometimes catch a random Days episode on work from home days when making/eating lunch (since sadly AMC was long gone - or maybe not so sadly, it did not have a pretty last 5 to 10 years).

One time John Black was finding out about his real parentage with an Irish Shirley Jones. Then a few years later, there was some how some Asian family heritage, which I am not sure made a lot of sense. I remember thinking at that time, the man is closing in on 70, does he really need another whose the Daddy storyline?

by Anonymousreply 63September 7, 2021 8:52 PM

R63 That was Yo Ling who was a white man named Tim Robicheaux who faked his death during the Korean War. "Adopted an asian" persona and then created a secret assassin organization. Yo Ling wanted his son John's blood to create a treatment for the disease he was suffering from which in turn would probably kill John. Yo Ling also tried to have gay Paul brainwashed into becoming one of his assassins but also infected him with a virus with the intention of having Paul spread virus to others.

by Anonymousreply 67September 8, 2021 1:01 PM

Is Marlena still Queen Bee at Salem University Hospital?

by Anonymousreply 68September 8, 2021 3:02 PM

The last time I saw Marlena, on the surface it seems like she has had some good facial work done and does not seem too tightly pulled back, but her eyes often seem closed or half closed. I think that is somewhat emphasized by the big false eye lashes she is wearing - so that is all you see. I know she can be a decent actress, but there are times when she seems like she has just taken some tranquilizers when she does her scenes -- not exactly animated.

by Anonymousreply 69September 8, 2021 3:14 PM

Dee Hall looks amazing for 74. I read somewhere they changed Marlena's age after her big 1991 return, shaving a few years off the character

by Anonymousreply 70September 8, 2021 3:47 PM

Foxy Humdinger

I hated every time Doug sang.

I remember when Kristian Alfonso was a fat teenager before morphing into a truly beautiful woman.

Kimberly whining Steeve, Steeve....but Patch was COOL.

I liked Marlena and Don. Her and the first Roman were ok, hated the second. He was always so rigid and uptight.

by Anonymousreply 71September 8, 2021 5:55 PM

The entire JER 90s period was all jump the shark and yet oddly addicting

It was dumbed down soap opera for sure but it made you want to watch the next day

But there was this feeling among longtime fans and even fellow soap people in the industry that DAYS was going too far under Reilly and that he was ruining the legacy and history of the sho I remember Agnes Nixon, creator of AMC and OLTL, bashing DAYS in the mid 90s and saying “I used to watch it everyday, as I thought it was brilliant when Bill Bell wrote it, but it’s the worst example of the negative things that people think of when they think of soap opera “

by Anonymousreply 72September 8, 2021 5:59 PM

Ben, the necktie killer, now with a heart of gold, and he and Ciara fall in love. There's no way in hell they would've let him out, have people accept him and much less have him and Ciara fall in love.

His character became so evil, and I find a few good deeds would hardly make him reformed in other people's eyes, but most fans are eating this storyline up.

by Anonymousreply 73September 8, 2021 8:35 PM

R73 it's mainly a certain sect of fans that eating it up and because Albert seems to have huge hard on for Ben along with Ron. Albert is behind pushing Ben to the front and center along with having Ciara act like a super annoying shrew who gets in people's faces to berate them over Ben.

by Anonymousreply 74September 8, 2021 10:55 PM

I remember that R64 and a few people saying that the entire storyline bordered on the verge of being yellowface and it almost seeming like Paul was going to brainwashed into being "straight". Since one of the reasons why Dina Higley was brought back was to get rid of all the gays, who were blamed for driving away longtime,"stealing" screen time from vets and didn't want to see gays kissing, having "pornographic" sex in a shower or hotel or getting married.

by Anonymousreply 75September 10, 2021 7:45 PM

r75 Why I refuse to wear the ribbon by Dee Hall.

by Anonymousreply 76September 10, 2021 10:21 PM

R73 I fucking hate that storyline. It's worse than the many reformed rapist storylines.

by Anonymousreply 77September 11, 2021 4:39 AM

I decided to watch Beyond Salem just because I kind of miss watching daytime soaps (watched AMC until about five years before it went off the air). I know a little about Days from when people watched in college and occasionally try to catch an episode while making lunch but have never completely got sucked in, so take my comments with a grain of satlt.

Was not exactly soap writing at its best, but what stuck out to me is how they are trying really hard to make Ben and Ciara this big supercouple and really do a bit of overkill of how awesome they are. They are pretty people and have a bit of charisma, but all of their love scenes seemed a bit forced -- look hot and passionate they - that they was not a lot of real fire. Austin and Carrie came off more as a real couple who were in love in their bedroom scene. Also, it seems like Ciara could be a tiresome character if overused.

Shane, John, and Marlena all look good for their age, but their time for action scenes might be in the past.

Speaking of reformed killers, one of the things that might have pushed me a way from AMC is when they took Ryan's sociopath brother, Jonathan and reformed him via brain tumor. After the surgery he acted like he was mentally handicapped and acted like a child and kept defending himself by saying "they cut the bad out". They also tried to pair this "reformed" killer with Jack's sheltered, autistic minor daughter. I think the actress was about 16 at the time and the actor a good ten years older, which added a bit of skeevy subtext to a skeevy paring.

Ryan did not have good luck with siblings, one was a rapist who allowed Ryan to be arrested for his crime, one was a serial killer, and his sister was killed by another serial killer. Speaking of characters that someone behind the scenes really tried to make the lead of the show to the shows detriment. He was ok as a charming cad supporting character, not so much as a tortured, smug leading man.

by Anonymousreply 78September 11, 2021 1:20 PM

Because R78 one of the executive producers on Days has boner for Ben and Ciara and has been determined to ram them down viewers throats even at the expense of other characters. That executive producer has also basically told RSW(Robert Scott Wilson) that he basically almost never has to worry about being let go unlike other actors with the show.

by Anonymousreply 79September 11, 2021 1:53 PM

r79 Basically

by Anonymousreply 80September 11, 2021 2:29 PM

R78 Ben and Lani were in the AMC online reboot as Petey Cortland and Cassandra, Angie and Jesse’s daughter

The co headwriter of DAYS is Loraine Broderick, who was headwriter on AMC the last couple of years of it’s ABC run

So Ken Corday got both headwriters from both canceled ABC soaps (Carlivati from OLTL too) over to DAYS
