He was still alive?

He was a Trumper piece of shit so no loss.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 25, 2021 1:01 AM |

I trust he’s giving Ed Sullivan the finger.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 25, 2021 1:03 AM |
Wow I thought he died in the 2000s.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 25, 2021 1:03 AM |
I saw him a bit ago with his nurse in front of Zabars. I knew he was at the finish line.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 25, 2021 1:04 AM |
R6, that stupid line about gangs of gays attacking straight people in the street was the only funny thing he ever said
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 25, 2021 1:06 AM |
Zabars? r7
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 25, 2021 1:07 AM |
He was a comic genius. Comedy is supposed to be controversial.

I thought he was Jewish?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 25, 2021 1:08 AM |
R10, yeah, saying gays are going around attacking straights in the streets is pretty damn funny. Gotta watch out for those gay gangs *rolls eyes*
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 25, 2021 1:10 AM |
Jesus Christ. This is somehow comforting considering that I thought he kicked it in 1995 or so?

The world lost another genius Jewish comedian. At least we have about 776 jewish comedians left.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 25, 2021 1:16 AM |
It is so hard to believe he hadn't died years ago--he seemed elderly in the 1960s.
I could never stand him. He was obnoxious, ugly, and unfunny, and he thought he was God's gift to comedy.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 25, 2021 1:16 AM |
R15 = humorless Republican. There's a reason why there are hardly any Republicans in comedy or satire
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 25, 2021 1:17 AM |
R17 is Jerry Seinfeld.
He's a gay you know.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 25, 2021 1:20 AM |
Never found Mason funny. Same with Don Rickles. Rickles was just a nasty fucking boisterous prick. On the other hand, the self depreciating humor of Phyllis Diller, Rodney Dangerfield, Toti Fields, and Joan Rivers were a scream.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 25, 2021 1:25 AM |
Hi my name is John Smith and I’m a gentile comedian who worked his way to the top without nepotism..

Saw him on Broadway. I had never laughed once at anything he did but his Broadway show was hilarious. People were literally falling out of their seats laughing. But he was only funny in person.

Jackie Mason (born Yacov Moshe Maza; June 9, 1928 - July 24, 2021), 93, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, was an American stand-up comedian and film and television actor. He is ranked No. 63 on Comedy Central's 100 greatest stand-up comedians of all-time.

This clip remains one of my favorite bits of stand up. Not sure if non Jews would find it funny though.
Even though it is a pity he became a Trumper later in life, I like that he was unapologetically Jewish.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 25, 2021 1:36 AM |

Good riddance to the racist pos.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 25, 2021 1:37 AM |
From Wikipedia: Previously a Democrat, Mason is a registered Republican. He has spoken out in defense of Donald Trump.
Mason was an admirer of Rabbi Meir Kahane. He openly endorsed Kahane's plan to pay Israeli Arabs unwilling to accept Israeli sovereignty to emigrate. He also served as the honored speaker at a fundraising event for a yeshiva founded by Kahane.
Mason was a piece of shit for these viewpoints.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 25, 2021 1:37 AM |
He walked off the set of "Hollywood Squares", telling the producers the show was beneath him.

Hope he's now burning in hell with KKKahane. People like them put the "nazi" in Ashkenazi.
He also referred to Obama as a "Schwartza" and I'm fucking sick of certain Jewish people trying to pretend it isn't racist because it fucking is, esp., coming from a hideously ugly fucking, Miracle Max looking shit like Mason who was clearly a fucking racist.

He was great on "The Simpsons" as Krusty's father, Rabbi Krustovsky.

Sheboygan? Oy. His brother was my friend's Rabbi on Long Island growing up.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 25, 2021 2:02 AM |
I guess his family left Sheboygan for the Lower East Side when Jackie was five. Sheboygan sounds Yiddish to me, but it is actually Chippewa.

Jewish humor is definitely the best humor but certain Jewish comedians like Jackie Mason I’ve never found one bit funny. Maybe they just skew too “old fashioned Borsch belt” for my taste.
I also saw him UWS - right before the pandemic. I recognized his voice first. He did look frail but being in his 90s I didn’t necessarily take that to mean on his last legs - he could have lived another 10 years like that.

Comedian Jackie Mason said gay people are “persecuting more people now that anybody who ever picked on them.”
by Anonymous | reply 50 | July 25, 2021 3:55 AM |
Mr Mason said: “Before, you couldn’t pick on homosexuals because it was bad taste, because homosexuals were a persecuted minority. Now, it’s exactly the opposite.
“Homosexuals can attack you and abuse you. And people who are in favour of same-sex marriage could abuse you, but you can’t say a word against same-sex marriage.
“The homosexuals are now in charge and if they find out you’re a heterosexual you’re afraid to walk in the street already.
“They are persecuting more people now that anybody who ever picked on them.”
He has previously been criticised for using “schvartze” – a Yiddish word considered to be a racial slur – most recently to refer to President Barack Obama.
In the interview, he went to say: “If you say any one word against a black person you are wiped out in a second. If you talk about a black person you have to be so careful.

Amazingly, it was never actually Mason who voiced the Aardvark.
It was John Byner doing a superb imitation of Jackie Mason (and the Ant was John Byner imitating Dean Martin).

Jackie Mason didn't know German. He spoke Yiddish, and the term is derogatory in Yiddish for people of African descent.

He also called David Dinkins "a fancy schvartze with a moustache" and later apologized for it. So it's not likehe could pretend he didn't know it was an offensive term when he referred to Obama that way.

The interesting thing about that YouTube stand up (above) is that it was somewhat true regarding Jews Vs Gentiles 30-40 years ago, but now everyone is high maintenance and food-obsessed and overly particular about everything.

by Anonymous | reply 76 | July 25, 2021 8:52 AM |
Do younger Jews find the humor in that YouTube funny? Or is that stuff something onky Jewish boomers and their parents can identify with? Also second on the accent, is that real or an affectation? He sounds like he's from the Lower East Side circa 1910.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | July 25, 2021 9:23 AM |
I witnessed the mishigas between him and Sullivan the night it happened. I remember my mother gasping and saying "oh my, Ed is not happy with him". Such a strained punim Ed had that night.

R77 I am the one who posted that Jews in Restaurants clip. I am 30, so not a boomer. I find that is still very true. However, I am also from a smaller Jewish community, and smaller communities in general tend to persevere more traits. Some NY living secular barely even reform Jew may not be able to appreciate it as much.

R80, but it's cultural traits not religious ones he's mocking, right? Some type of Eastern European Jewish culture that adapted to the US beginning at the turn of the 20th century. J guess more Orthodox ones would maintain insular cultural traits. I wonder if Syrian Jews from Great Neck would find that funny.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | July 25, 2021 10:32 AM |
R80 I see what you mean. Yes, instead of secular I should say assimilated. Usually, not not always, the more secular you are, the more assimilated you are.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | July 25, 2021 11:06 AM |
[quote]I wonder if Syrian Jews from Great Neck would find that funny.
No, they wouldn't find it funny. They would find it insulting stereotypes of European ghetto Jews.

He had one hit his whole career, a one man Broadway show. Then he would drag the show's carcass back every couple of years for a few weeks. He was awarded a special Tony because they would give them out for shows that didn't fit into musical or play definition. They dropped the award just in time to not award Carrie Fisher for her fabulous show.

Yeah, I guess his sitcom, "Chicken Soup," which ran for less than two months and co-starred Lynn Redgrave, didn't exactly burn up the ratings.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | July 25, 2021 4:25 PM |
Are we supposed to feel bad also when Rob Becker dies? His one-man unfunny comedy show ran on Broadway even longer.

White, heterosexual male privilege at its worst. “You won’t allow me to define and disrespect who want to, when they’re not like me!”.
