Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony Viewing Thread

It's finally on. A year late. An empty stadium. Bad boy band performances. Boring Ralph Lauren designed uniforms for Team USA. Let the Games begin!

by Anonymousreply 177July 26, 2021 12:25 AM

Shut up, OP. You are so fucking boring and disingenuous.

by Anonymousreply 1July 23, 2021 10:15 AM

Oh, dear. R1 does not understand the definition of disingenuous.

by Anonymousreply 2July 23, 2021 10:18 AM

I’m watching it right now and I just can’t get excited.😐

by Anonymousreply 3July 23, 2021 11:00 AM

Just began

by Anonymousreply 4July 23, 2021 11:01 AM

Heartbreaking to watch what the World looked before March 20. I want all back to normal.

by Anonymousreply 5July 23, 2021 11:03 AM

They weren’t joking when they said the opening would be modest….

by Anonymousreply 6July 23, 2021 11:04 AM

How and where are you watching it?

by Anonymousreply 7July 23, 2021 11:06 AM

R7 If you’re in the US it’s on NBC

by Anonymousreply 8July 23, 2021 11:07 AM

They could have socially distanced a live audience. Have some people in the stands. The empty stadium is just weird.

by Anonymousreply 9July 23, 2021 11:07 AM

Yay! Thank you for making a thread.

by Anonymousreply 10July 23, 2021 11:09 AM

R7 In Europe national channels

by Anonymousreply 11July 23, 2021 11:09 AM

R9 Think they essentially built that stadium 🏟 for nothing now. They probably thought it would be a revenue machine.

by Anonymousreply 12July 23, 2021 11:10 AM

R9 I read 500 ”important” people will be there.

by Anonymousreply 13July 23, 2021 11:10 AM

Beautifully done so far. Very lowkey.

by Anonymousreply 14July 23, 2021 11:10 AM

Looks and sounds depressing

by Anonymousreply 15July 23, 2021 11:11 AM

Thankfully the NBC commentators aren't prattling on with inane commentary like back in the day when Bob Costas and Katie Couric anchored these things. At least not yet.

by Anonymousreply 16July 23, 2021 11:11 AM

Are they supposed to be COVID bacteria or something?

by Anonymousreply 17July 23, 2021 11:11 AM

R7 I'm watching on TVNorge here in Norway.

by Anonymousreply 18July 23, 2021 11:11 AM

R12 And they probably thought tourism dollars would help pay for it. Guess that’s not happening now since only close family were invited!

by Anonymousreply 19July 23, 2021 11:12 AM

Beautiful but understated opening ceremony. Very typical for the Japanese. It couldn't be any different considering we're still in a pandemic.

by Anonymousreply 20July 23, 2021 11:13 AM

This is depressing. I’m going back to sleep.

by Anonymousreply 21July 23, 2021 11:13 AM

Emperor

by Anonymousreply 22July 23, 2021 11:14 AM

R21 What did you expect? Covid is still a thing.

by Anonymousreply 23July 23, 2021 11:15 AM

R23 It’s always going to be a thing and the vaccines are here. It’s stupid that they can’t even have fans in an OUTDOOR stadium as long as they’re vaccinated.

by Anonymousreply 24July 23, 2021 11:18 AM

Beautiful opening number ruined for me by the babbling woketard idiots at the CBC talking constantly over it. Is there any site I can watch this stream without commentary?

by Anonymousreply 25July 23, 2021 11:18 AM

At least this woman can sing beautifully unlike those r&b singers

by Anonymousreply 26July 23, 2021 11:19 AM

That's quite a dress on the woman singing the Japanese national anthem.

by Anonymousreply 27July 23, 2021 11:20 AM

Beautiful singing.

by Anonymousreply 28July 23, 2021 11:20 AM

And here comes the covid remembrance.

by Anonymousreply 29July 23, 2021 11:20 AM

Love this artistic aspect.

by Anonymousreply 30July 23, 2021 11:21 AM

[quote]At least this woman can sing beautifully unlike those r&b singers

If they had been held in the US, they’d probably have ghetto trash like Cardi B and Meg the Cunt performing.

by Anonymousreply 31July 23, 2021 11:23 AM

Beautiful people

by Anonymousreply 32July 23, 2021 11:25 AM

Very Japanese

by Anonymousreply 33July 23, 2021 11:25 AM

Kind of loving the minimal aesthetics.

by Anonymousreply 34July 23, 2021 11:27 AM

The woman in white before the Covid moment (actually 30 seconds) of silence was channeling Anna Halperin dance

by Anonymousreply 35July 23, 2021 11:28 AM

I changed my mind, this is actually well thought and beautiful

by Anonymousreply 36July 23, 2021 11:29 AM

Wow. Absolutely loving it. So classy.

by Anonymousreply 37July 23, 2021 11:33 AM

Parade of hotties coming up!

by Anonymousreply 38July 23, 2021 11:33 AM

R36 Same. Beautifully minimalistic. Love the aesthetics.

by Anonymousreply 39July 23, 2021 11:34 AM

Oh, I forgot Paris will be next in 2024. I tried to get tickets to London, hopefully I’ll get to see live in Paris.

by Anonymousreply 40July 23, 2021 11:35 AM

Where can one stream this?

by Anonymousreply 41July 23, 2021 11:36 AM

The men from Israel were good looking. Italy now too.

by Anonymousreply 49July 23, 2021 11:50 AM

Were they really playing music from Final Fantasy?? o_O

by Anonymousreply 50July 23, 2021 11:51 AM

This Megan dyke is interviewed everywhere, what about the other team members ?

by Anonymousreply 54July 23, 2021 12:07 PM

Enough of Megan...I want to see the other countries!

by Anonymousreply 55July 23, 2021 12:10 PM

Canada!

by Anonymousreply 56July 23, 2021 12:10 PM

R51 I saw a few hot guys a few minutes ago from an African country too.

by Anonymousreply 57July 23, 2021 12:11 PM

CBC is unwatchable. Every second word...women.

by Anonymousreply 58July 23, 2021 12:13 PM

The leisure wear Olympics. Guess that's appropriate in a pandemic.

by Anonymousreply 59July 23, 2021 12:15 PM

Kyrgyzstan flagbearer is cute.

by Anonymousreply 60July 23, 2021 12:16 PM

R58 I like the Norwegian commentators. They stick to the facts and inform us about which sports each country is competing in.

by Anonymousreply 61July 23, 2021 12:18 PM

Flag bearer Vargas from Costa Rica is hot!

by Anonymousreply 62July 23, 2021 12:21 PM

The CBC cunt commentator just said " The Kyrgyzstan team is all men and none of them are wearing masks!" Fucking bitch. Fire her.

by Anonymousreply 63July 23, 2021 12:25 PM

R63 I love her.

by Anonymousreply 64July 23, 2021 12:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 67July 23, 2021 12:53 PM

Oh...the oily Tongan is back!

by Anonymousreply 68July 23, 2021 12:53 PM

Tonga....yes!!

by Anonymousreply 69July 23, 2021 12:53 PM

OMG. They don't need to do these interviews during the parade of nations. Fuck NBC.

by Anonymousreply 70July 23, 2021 12:56 PM

Norwegian guy! Your turn! Nice outfits

by Anonymousreply 71July 23, 2021 12:56 PM

R70 That’s rude. So glad I am watching this in Europe. The commentators are telling the facts of each country’s team shortly and dufing performances they don’t talk.

by Anonymousreply 72July 23, 2021 12:58 PM

Next oily man! Oh my!

by Anonymousreply 73July 23, 2021 12:58 PM

I've changed to the BBC...fuck NBC!

by Anonymousreply 74July 23, 2021 1:00 PM

I give up. CBC and NBC are both dog shit. It's like they actively try to get people not to watch. I need a link to a European broadcast that isn't 50% commercials and stupid commentators ruining the rest.

by Anonymousreply 82July 23, 2021 2:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 83July 23, 2021 2:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 84July 23, 2021 2:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 85July 23, 2021 2:11 PM

He should have posted this to yotube and just read few parts live. Too long. I have my tv on mute.

by Anonymousreply 86July 23, 2021 2:13 PM

Has Prince Albert got even porkier during the pandemic? He looked quite hefty when he stood up to cheer the Monaco team. And why do the US team always have to behave like disrespectful cunts everywhere?

by Anonymousreply 87July 23, 2021 2:32 PM

OK, the pictograph thing was really fun

by Anonymousreply 88July 23, 2021 2:34 PM

That 50 sport montage was hilarious. I'm surprised by how lofi the opening ceremony has been.

by Anonymousreply 89July 23, 2021 2:34 PM

Amazing they got John Legend for that video. I wonder what happened to him.

by Anonymousreply 98July 23, 2021 5:17 PM

USA needs to stop chanting U-S-A. Seems dumb.

by Anonymousreply 99July 23, 2021 5:22 PM

Nobody set their eyes as well on Moroccan flag bearer? He's called Ramzi Boukhiam, he's a surfer and, well, an actual model. LOL Like a real one, not a "fitness Instagram model".

by Anonymousreply 100July 23, 2021 5:30 PM

R93 R94 good luck for both countries in Tokyo

by Anonymousreply 101July 23, 2021 5:54 PM

Why weren't they walking out in alphabetical order (except Greece)?

by Anonymousreply 102July 23, 2021 5:56 PM

This can't be real, right? Wtf?!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 103July 23, 2021 5:57 PM

Fun fact: our male flag bearer is half Japanese. He will compete in swimming.

by Anonymousreply 104July 23, 2021 6:01 PM

R102, the twit announcer on the BBC who wouldn't stop yapping said that the order was based on the Japanese Kana alphabet rather than English. The exception she mentioned was France. Apparently the next host entering the stadium just before the current host was something new.

by Anonymousreply 105July 23, 2021 6:04 PM

Well, she WAS disappointed at the cancellation of the Sacrifice of the Journalists segment.

by Anonymousreply 106July 23, 2021 6:22 PM

Watched it last night, though kept falling asleep by the end, so missed the lighting of the cauldron. When the guys came out to do the live action posing of all the different sports, I know that was very clever, but I just wanted it to be over by then.

It was a bit sad, because the sparsity reminded you so much of what was going on in the world right now. Our commentators kept talking about how the Japanese would be so proud, and all I could think was how much the average Japanese person there is apparently really upset and frightened that these games are going ahead.

The simplicity can be very beautiful too, of course. I liked the music. So, did the Japanese invent tap dancing?

The Parade of Nations is my favourite part usually. R102, they did come out in alphabetical order, but Japanese alphabetical order, ie A, I, U, E, O, Ka/Ga, Ki/Gi, Ku/Gu, Ke/Ge, Ko/Go, etc. If you look at the Japanese names of countries and then think of the sound of the first syllable, then it makes sense. Greece always marches first because the Olympics are their thing originally, and the host country is last. I think France was penultimate because Paris is the following Olympics.

Did anyone else think it looked like the flag bearers for Uruguay were fighting over the flag? Haha "This way! No, this way! It's MY turn!"

I'm so sorry, Americans, but the chanting of "USA! USA!" is just embarrassing.

Everyone was so sunburnt, even people I wouldn't expect. The sun must be so hot over there at the moment. My country was an exception pretty much, but it's ingrained into us that you wear sunscreen in the sun.

There are hot guys on every team, usually I enjoy picking out one from every team who I would fuck (because, you know, whore), but didn't really think about it this time, for some reason. There was an undercurrent of sadness about the whole thing.

The Irish bowing? Be still my heart, that was sweet, respectful, and they quickly became my favourite team.

We had stupid presenters too - ugh, Johanna Griggs and Bruce McAvaney, are involved in EVERYTHING to do with sport - but I feel worse for the posters upthread talking about NBC/CBC, because that sounds horrendous.

I like it when traditional outfits get worn, that's always fun to see. This parade suddenly made me appreciate the colourful Hawaiian-style shirt, in a way I hadn't before. Many of those mens' shirts were really great.

by Anonymousreply 109July 23, 2021 9:06 PM

[quote] Why weren't they walking out in alphabetical order (except Greece)?

They were in alphabetical order, the alphabet of the host country as usual.

by Anonymousreply 110July 23, 2021 11:02 PM

Why are non Japanese artists involved with this show? WTF?

by Anonymousreply 111July 24, 2021 12:52 AM

I don't think that's so unusual R111. I remember for the Athens Olympics in 2004, both Laurie Anderson and Björk were involved.

by Anonymousreply 112July 24, 2021 12:55 AM

Is Hello Kitty lighting the Olympic cauldron?

by Anonymousreply 113July 24, 2021 1:02 AM

Would that she would and would set herself on fire as she did, R113.

by Anonymousreply 114July 24, 2021 1:03 AM

[quote]I think France was penultimate because Paris is the following Olympics.

And the US was third last, because they are hosting the 2028 games, I just realised.

by Anonymousreply 115July 24, 2021 1:39 AM

Shame they didn't cancel these games. Japan is taking a major hit financially and with covid.

by Anonymousreply 116July 24, 2021 1:43 AM

The commentators' little facts about the countries were so weird sometimes. Like with smaller countries: "Oh here's Cambodia, devastated by the Khmer Rouge murdering millions". Surely Cambodia has more to it than rehashing a horrible event from getting on close to 50 years ago? "Rwanda - suffering so badly in the 90s when there was a genocide", "Bosnia and Herzegovina - all those Muslims murdered at Srebrenica", etc.

But they don't say when the US comes out: "The United States of America, where insurrectionists attempted a coup earlier this year" or anything like that. I just find it a bit odd.

by Anonymousreply 117July 24, 2021 1:45 AM

[quote]Shame they didn't cancel these games. Japan is taking a major hit financially and with covid.

I agree, and I like the Olympics generally. But this seems like such a ridiculous choice to keep them going. The Japanese public are so frustrated and terrified of what may happen.

And the most frustrating thing is knowing that if it all blows up, Japan will be left to deal with the mess, while the IOC says a few meaningless "mea culpas", safe in the knowledge that it's already happened and we can't do anything about it now.

Everyone's always acting in hindsight, it's so annoying.

by Anonymousreply 118July 24, 2021 1:47 AM

Agree, r118. I personally think Los Angeles should have given up their dates and been given 2032. I've lived in LA all my life and we basically have most of the venues built. It's no skin off our asses to trade dates. I think it's bullshit! China, France and Italy wouldn't give up the time line especially China. Rules can be broken or at least modified to fit the situation. Japan will be in MORE financial peril for generations to come. I feel terrible for them.

by Anonymousreply 119July 24, 2021 2:59 AM

This is about the athletes not the public sorry. The public never wants these games in their city!

by Anonymousreply 120July 24, 2021 3:02 AM

From the NBC coverage, one would think that the US only sent women to the games.

by Anonymousreply 121July 24, 2021 3:03 AM

I am just watching this (on tape delay?) and the dancers are doing some bloody red interpretive dance that looks like a Japanese porn binding fetish.

by Anonymousreply 122July 24, 2021 3:04 AM

And what is up with the dude on the treadmill?

by Anonymousreply 123July 24, 2021 3:05 AM

I don't see anything wrong with chanting "USA".

by Anonymousreply 124July 24, 2021 3:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 130July 24, 2021 3:14 AM

[quote]I don't see anything wrong with chanting "USA".

It's so embarrassingly desperate. Trying to convince everyone how great the USA is, rather than, you know, just leading by example. If you have to chant it, you probably aren't that great.

by Anonymousreply 131July 24, 2021 3:16 AM

I saw a tweet that there're Japanese protestors outside the stadium opposing against Japan's authorities that persist for this Olympics to take place. The situation is really a contrast to a joyful, blithesome parade inside the stadium.

I personally hate the IOC for this. The Japanese government has been left with no choice but to continue, otherwise they are compelled to pay a large sum of money to the IOC.

by Anonymousreply 132July 24, 2021 3:20 AM

There are protests at every olympics.

by Anonymousreply 133July 24, 2021 3:23 AM

I'm sure I read somewhere that the IOC are one of the most corrupt corporations in the world, followed by FIFA. Not sure if that's true or not, but I would believe it.

by Anonymousreply 134July 24, 2021 3:23 AM

The American athletes look like the Hamburglar.

by Anonymousreply 135July 24, 2021 3:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 136July 24, 2021 3:37 AM

by Anonymousreply 137July 24, 2021 3:38 AM

R131, you obviously have never been to any sporting event. It's quite normal for people to chant for their country or teams they support.

by Anonymousreply 138July 24, 2021 3:42 AM

1st Olympic beach volleyball match canceled due to COVID-19

The very first match of the Olympic beach volleyball tournament has been canceled because a Czech player tested positive for COVID-19.

Markéta Sluková tested positive earlier this week, knocking her and partner Barbora Hermannova out of the Tokyo Games.

The Czechs were supposed to be playing a team from the host country that would have been making its Olympic debut. Instead, the Japanese pair of Megumi Murakami and Miki Ishii earned the victory by default.

German cyclist Simon Geschke has been ruled out of the men’s road race after testing positive for the coronavirus.

The German team says Geschke initially tested positive Friday and his result was confirmed by another test later in the day.

Germany says fellow riders Nikias Arndt and Maximilian Schachmann are cleared to race Saturday. The fourth rider on the team, Emanuel Buchmann, was Geschke’s roommate and was waiting overnight on the result of another PCR test for the virus. Team staff tested negative.

Geschke was a stage winner on the Tour de France in 2015.

The German road race team is living in a hotel and not in the Olympic Village.

Geschke says he followed the hygiene rules at the Olympics. He adds that “I feel fine physically but emotionally it’s a really terrible day for me.”

by Anonymousreply 146July 24, 2021 3:50 AM

R146 what a disaster.

They shoud have canceled the games.

by Anonymousreply 147July 24, 2021 3:52 AM

by Anonymousreply 148July 24, 2021 3:56 AM

by Anonymousreply 149July 24, 2021 3:57 AM

by Anonymousreply 150July 24, 2021 3:59 AM

Can anyone confirm for me if they do a remembrance of Munich at every opening ceremony? When it happened last night, I thought they hadn't, but I'm not so sure now.

by Anonymousreply 151July 24, 2021 4:01 AM

Cameroon has the best outfits so far, IMO.

by Anonymousreply 152July 24, 2021 4:04 AM

by Anonymousreply 153July 24, 2021 4:04 AM

The remembrance bit really added to the whole somber mood of the thing. Not a lot of joy in any of it, I thought. Which is understandable.

Mr. Flagbearer Georgia is one big dude.

Paraguay look like candy stripers.

by Anonymousreply 161July 24, 2021 4:54 AM

R160 Mr Tonga is an Australian engineer. No wife, no children.

by Anonymousreply 162July 24, 2021 5:08 AM

R162, thanks!

by Anonymousreply 163July 24, 2021 5:13 AM

Oh my god, this IOC president's speech is just too f'ing long -- read the room!

by Anonymousreply 164July 24, 2021 6:05 AM

R162 When a hot, handsome, young and successful man, especially an athlete, isn't married/dating nor has kids by the age of 37 means just three things: 1- He's a Casanova/free spirit 2- He's gay 3- He is asexual/has weird relationship with sexuality

by Anonymousreply 165July 24, 2021 8:37 AM

R162, straight men have caught on that marriage is a sham. It will take gays 50 years to realize that, too.

by Anonymousreply 166July 24, 2021 9:09 AM

Cool

[quote]Cypress got some hot men.

R155. It's not "Cypress." The name of the country is "Cyprus," officially called the Republic of Cyprus.

Just 16.7 million viewers for NBC’s four-hour long broadcast of the Tokyo Olympic Games opening ceremony on Friday.

The prior lowest mark for an Opening Ceremony is 20.1 million for the 1988 Seoul Games. Per Sports Media Watch, the last six Opening Ceremonies averaged at least 25 million viewers; the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in 2018 averaged 27.8 million, and the Rio Summer Olympics in 2016 averaged 26.5 million. London's 2012 Opening Ceremony holds the record at 40.7 million.

By way of comparison, analysts noted that Friday's TV broadcast drew fewer viewers than "Sunday Night Football" and Oprah Winfrey's bombshell interview on CBS with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in March.

During quieter moments in the show however, “protesters outside the stadium could be heard yelling ‘Stop the Olympics” through bullhorns,’”

^^I don't get the politicization of broadcastTV ratings. People are not watching TV the same way they used to. There are probably five different ways to watch broadcasts now.

by Anonymousreply 172July 25, 2021 8:30 PM

What dumbasses are focused on “woke” comments? WHO THE FUCK CARES. So, they’re pointing out women. OML!!!!! There was a time they did this for gays in TV shows/movies and I’m sure there were tons of people groaning. STFU. You’re division trolls, like right wing division trolls.

Tonga guy- fucking HOT!

All countries had hotties. Love watching gymnastics and swimming for the hotties.

The Kabuki pianist was on fire! What sounded slightly improvisational actually didn't hurt my ears.

Winter Olympics are much more exciting than Summer Olympics.

A South Korean broadcaster has apologized for using “inappropriate” images and captions to depict some countries competing in the Tokyo Olympics — including using a photo of Chernobyl for Ukraine and pizza for Italy.

Seoul-based MBC also posted reports of the recent assassination of President Jovenel Moïse as Haitian athletes walked into the Tokyo stadium during opening ceremonies, The Guardian said in a report.

The network flashed a picture of Dracula for Romania, pizza for Italy and salmon for Norway.

It referred to the US Marshall Islands, meanwhile, as “once a nuclear test site for the United States.”

El Salvador, where cryptocurrency is the legal tender, was depicted with a bitcoin symbol

R175, no way. Curling is so fucking boring.
