It's finally on. A year late. An empty stadium. Bad boy band performances. Boring Ralph Lauren designed uniforms for Team USA. Let the Games begin!

R7 If you’re in the US it’s on NBC
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 23, 2021 11:07 AM |
They could have socially distanced a live audience. Have some people in the stands. The empty stadium is just weird.

Thankfully the NBC commentators aren't prattling on with inane commentary like back in the day when Bob Costas and Katie Couric anchored these things. At least not yet.

Beautiful but understated opening ceremony. Very typical for the Japanese. It couldn't be any different considering we're still in a pandemic.

by Anonymous | reply 104 | July 23, 2021 6:01 PM |
R102, the twit announcer on the BBC who wouldn't stop yapping said that the order was based on the Japanese Kana alphabet rather than English. The exception she mentioned was France. Apparently the next host entering the stadium just before the current host was something new.

Watched it last night, though kept falling asleep by the end, so missed the lighting of the cauldron. When the guys came out to do the live action posing of all the different sports, I know that was very clever, but I just wanted it to be over by then.
It was a bit sad, because the sparsity reminded you so much of what was going on in the world right now. Our commentators kept talking about how the Japanese would be so proud, and all I could think was how much the average Japanese person there is apparently really upset and frightened that these games are going ahead.
The simplicity can be very beautiful too, of course. I liked the music. So, did the Japanese invent tap dancing?
The Parade of Nations is my favourite part usually. R102, they did come out in alphabetical order, but Japanese alphabetical order, ie A, I, U, E, O, Ka/Ga, Ki/Gi, Ku/Gu, Ke/Ge, Ko/Go, etc. If you look at the Japanese names of countries and then think of the sound of the first syllable, then it makes sense. Greece always marches first because the Olympics are their thing originally, and the host country is last. I think France was penultimate because Paris is the following Olympics.
Did anyone else think it looked like the flag bearers for Uruguay were fighting over the flag? Haha "This way! No, this way! It's MY turn!"
I'm so sorry, Americans, but the chanting of "USA! USA!" is just embarrassing.
Everyone was so sunburnt, even people I wouldn't expect. The sun must be so hot over there at the moment. My country was an exception pretty much, but it's ingrained into us that you wear sunscreen in the sun.
There are hot guys on every team, usually I enjoy picking out one from every team who I would fuck (because, you know, whore), but didn't really think about it this time, for some reason. There was an undercurrent of sadness about the whole thing.
The Irish bowing? Be still my heart, that was sweet, respectful, and they quickly became my favourite team.
We had stupid presenters too - ugh, Johanna Griggs and Bruce McAvaney, are involved in EVERYTHING to do with sport - but I feel worse for the posters upthread talking about NBC/CBC, because that sounds horrendous.
I like it when traditional outfits get worn, that's always fun to see. This parade suddenly made me appreciate the colourful Hawaiian-style shirt, in a way I hadn't before. Many of those mens' shirts were really great.

by Anonymous | reply 111 | July 24, 2021 12:52 AM |

Shame they didn't cancel these games. Japan is taking a major hit financially and with covid.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | July 24, 2021 1:43 AM |
The commentators' little facts about the countries were so weird sometimes. Like with smaller countries: "Oh here's Cambodia, devastated by the Khmer Rouge murdering millions". Surely Cambodia has more to it than rehashing a horrible event from getting on close to 50 years ago? "Rwanda - suffering so badly in the 90s when there was a genocide", "Bosnia and Herzegovina - all those Muslims murdered at Srebrenica", etc.
But they don't say when the US comes out: "The United States of America, where insurrectionists attempted a coup earlier this year" or anything like that. I just find it a bit odd.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | July 24, 2021 1:45 AM |
[quote]Shame they didn't cancel these games. Japan is taking a major hit financially and with covid.
I agree, and I like the Olympics generally. But this seems like such a ridiculous choice to keep them going. The Japanese public are so frustrated and terrified of what may happen.
And the most frustrating thing is knowing that if it all blows up, Japan will be left to deal with the mess, while the IOC says a few meaningless "mea culpas", safe in the knowledge that it's already happened and we can't do anything about it now.
Everyone's always acting in hindsight, it's so annoying.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | July 24, 2021 1:47 AM |
Agree, r118. I personally think Los Angeles should have given up their dates and been given 2032. I've lived in LA all my life and we basically have most of the venues built. It's no skin off our asses to trade dates. I think it's bullshit! China, France and Italy wouldn't give up the time line especially China. Rules can be broken or at least modified to fit the situation. Japan will be in MORE financial peril for generations to come. I feel terrible for them.

I saw a tweet that there're Japanese protestors outside the stadium opposing against Japan's authorities that persist for this Olympics to take place. The situation is really a contrast to a joyful, blithesome parade inside the stadium.
I personally hate the IOC for this. The Japanese government has been left with no choice but to continue, otherwise they are compelled to pay a large sum of money to the IOC.

1st Olympic beach volleyball match canceled due to COVID-19
The very first match of the Olympic beach volleyball tournament has been canceled because a Czech player tested positive for COVID-19.
Markéta Sluková tested positive earlier this week, knocking her and partner Barbora Hermannova out of the Tokyo Games.
The Czechs were supposed to be playing a team from the host country that would have been making its Olympic debut. Instead, the Japanese pair of Megumi Murakami and Miki Ishii earned the victory by default.
German cyclist Simon Geschke has been ruled out of the men’s road race after testing positive for the coronavirus.
The German team says Geschke initially tested positive Friday and his result was confirmed by another test later in the day.
Germany says fellow riders Nikias Arndt and Maximilian Schachmann are cleared to race Saturday. The fourth rider on the team, Emanuel Buchmann, was Geschke’s roommate and was waiting overnight on the result of another PCR test for the virus. Team staff tested negative.
Geschke was a stage winner on the Tour de France in 2015.
The German road race team is living in a hotel and not in the Olympic Village.
Geschke says he followed the hygiene rules at the Olympics. He adds that “I feel fine physically but emotionally it’s a really terrible day for me.”

No, R150, they specifically said that they had never done that remembrance before. In fact it was the first time it was ever done.

I'll forgive the cardboard opening ceremony if all of the Asian athletes breed me with their turgid erections and voluminous ejaculations.

The remembrance bit really added to the whole somber mood of the thing. Not a lot of joy in any of it, I thought. Which is understandable.

R162 When a hot, handsome, young and successful man, especially an athlete, isn't married/dating nor has kids by the age of 37 means just three things: 1- He's a Casanova/free spirit 2- He's gay 3- He is asexual/has weird relationship with sexuality

R162, straight men have caught on that marriage is a sham. It will take gays 50 years to realize that, too.

R155. It's not "Cypress." The name of the country is "Cyprus," officially called the Republic of Cyprus.

Just 16.7 million viewers for NBC’s four-hour long broadcast of the Tokyo Olympic Games opening ceremony on Friday.
The prior lowest mark for an Opening Ceremony is 20.1 million for the 1988 Seoul Games. Per Sports Media Watch, the last six Opening Ceremonies averaged at least 25 million viewers; the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in 2018 averaged 27.8 million, and the Rio Summer Olympics in 2016 averaged 26.5 million. London's 2012 Opening Ceremony holds the record at 40.7 million.
By way of comparison, analysts noted that Friday's TV broadcast drew fewer viewers than "Sunday Night Football" and Oprah Winfrey's bombshell interview on CBS with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in March.
During quieter moments in the show however, “protesters outside the stadium could be heard yelling ‘Stop the Olympics” through bullhorns,’”

^^I don't get the politicization of broadcastTV ratings. People are not watching TV the same way they used to. There are probably five different ways to watch broadcasts now.

What dumbasses are focused on “woke” comments? WHO THE FUCK CARES. So, they’re pointing out women. OML!!!!! There was a time they did this for gays in TV shows/movies and I’m sure there were tons of people groaning. STFU. You’re division trolls, like right wing division trolls.

A South Korean broadcaster has apologized for using “inappropriate” images and captions to depict some countries competing in the Tokyo Olympics — including using a photo of Chernobyl for Ukraine and pizza for Italy.
Seoul-based MBC also posted reports of the recent assassination of President Jovenel Moïse as Haitian athletes walked into the Tokyo stadium during opening ceremonies, The Guardian said in a report.
The network flashed a picture of Dracula for Romania, pizza for Italy and salmon for Norway.
It referred to the US Marshall Islands, meanwhile, as “once a nuclear test site for the United States.”
El Salvador, where cryptocurrency is the legal tender, was depicted with a bitcoin symbol
