Watching an Ian Thorpe documentary on tv right now. I had no idea he was so successful. I sorta remember he was a great swimmer, winning Olympics. I just didn't know the scope of it, how popular he was etc. It's great that he came out as gay.

R8 Are you referring to the opening ceremony only, or hot Olympic athletes in general? Not all athletes were allowed at the opening ceremony (because of covid they limited the number), and some couldn't attend because they have competition shortly after the ceremony.

Any Canadians here? Looks like you might get a medal in cycling, maybe. Norway is usually good in cycling, but this is a climbing track, and we don't have any good climbers, sadly. There's a Colombian, Canadian, American and Slovakian in the lead, and more. 27.5 km to go.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 24, 2021 7:54 AM |
I have to admit I was a little bit underwhelmed by the Opening Ceremonies. There were a lot of missed opportunities, IMO. There was so much rich Japanese heritage-meets-technology-and-modern-pop-culture that they could've drawn from, but the artistic director clearly wanted to go in a different direction, and the result of that were a lot of jumbled, disparate vignettes.

R24 Same! So well deserved. It is huge for such a small developing country to win gold. It's only their second Olympics gold ever. That says it all about how much it means to the people of Ecuador. And the fact that Carapaz was the one to win gold is just icing on the cake. He is a hero in his country.

Understandable.
The Opening Ceremonies were really pared down. One of the commentators stated that following the development of Covid, planners had to scrap everything and begin anew. Donāt think it was particularly easy for the Japanese: along with the reconfiguring, it was also necessary to set a respectful tone as the world still seems in the throes of the virus. Couple this with Japanās populace overtly against holding the Olympics (and being unable to attend these events in their own country!), it was a delicate balance to strike. If anyone could create a theme of ārespectfulā, it would be the Japanese.
Although it might have appeared disjointed, I feel for the Japanese hosting this particular Olympics. They are in a tight spot (no thanks to the IOC), and they may pay more than a heavy financial price for these games. I truly hope no lives are lost as a result of this international event.

I find this Olympics depressing.
On the US side, it's not about up-and-coming stars but those who are on their way down from a peak and will inevitably disappoint: Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky, Sam Mikulik, et. al.

Women's gymnastics wasn't as good as expected. They have time but aren't leading. Men's basketball also choked. Women's soccer has to beat Australia to stay in it. Sweden always messes them up.
I agree about the skateboarding, mention upthread. It was lame and shouldn't be an Olympic sport. I'm gonna wait and see how Rock climbing goes but it looked a bit underwhelming in clips. 3 on 3 basketball is a bit of a headscratcher too. Do we need that?

I wish China had beat GB in the men's synchronized 10m platform. I didn't want Daley to win anything. It's unfortunate that the U.S. didn't qualify to compete in this event at the Olympics, because David Dinsmore and Brandon Loschiavo didn't score high enough at the World Cup this year to gain the berth.

Hope the now all-black US basketball team fails to get a medal. Then we can hear what racist Jalen Rose has to say. Probably blame the white coach.
ESPN basketball analyst Jalen Rose has caught flack for recent comments he made about USA Basketball naming Kevin Love to its roster for next month's Tokyo Olympics. Rose said the move was basically white "tokenism" by the national governing body, saying they are "scared to make an all-Black" squad for the Summer Olympics.
Rose made his comments on the Jalen & Jacoby podcast last week.
"Kevin Love is on the team because of tokenism," Rose said. "Don't be scared to make an all-Black team representing the United States of America. I'm disappointed by that."

R100 True. I think most people expect Jakob to win silver or bronze, not gold. Warholm on the other hand is a shoe-in for gold. He has the world record. I think we will end up with 3 gold medals (Warholm, women's handball and Blummenfeldt) and maybe a couple silver and/or bronze. Anything else is a bonus. Either way we have done better than Rio. We only got 4 bronze in Rio. We already have a gold medal. Gold trumps 4 bronze. They always count number of gold medals in the medal table, not number of medals in total.

Highly, highly doubtful. It's unlikely that Biles will have such an under-performance two nights in a row. Even more unlikely is the possibility of this particular group of Russian women (inconsistent headcases) over-performing that well two nights in a row.

What is the point of ROC. They are still competing as Russia. They are still counting medals for Russia. Essentially, they got caught systematically doping, yeah we are gonna punish you by making you change your name, but you can still do what you are doing. They are all still dopers.

I was the one who asked the original question about the possibility of an upset. I guess the US was banking heavily on Biles to get them the gold and when she had to pull out, the ROC snuck in to win.

R146, if she was injured, she could have hurt the team more by not pulling out. She may not have wanted her team to risk low scores due to her and possibly not win any medal. The team managed to capture the silver with the other three gymnasts.

Speaking of physical injury, look at the Russian male gymnast who had a torn Achilles tendon a few months ago and hasnāt fully recovered yet, but who grimaced and cried through the pain and competed so that his team could win the team gold. From Friday to Sunday, primetime coverage of the Olympics averaged 15.8 million viewers on NBC, its sibling cable outlets and digital platforms including NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app. (Those figures include final numbers for Friday and preliminary figures for Saturday and Sunday.) I don't care if Dee and Dan Plorable only want to see Muricans while they shovel Cheetos into their fat recliner-encased holes. The Olympics is about a meeting of nationsānot just in swimming when they can get the camera on everyone at the same time.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | July 28, 2021 4:56 AM |
There is an overall lack of excitement, but part of the ratings drop has to simply be the time zone. There's a few live events on early in the morning, some in the evening. But it's not like Rio where things were basically in the same time zone. Even London 6 hours ahead wasn't bad. But 14 hours ahead is a pain.
Also, there's almost too many viewing options. I need a big spreadsheet to know exactly what's going to be on at what time on what channel or app (I've found something close, but incomplete). And I realized I can't watch traditional network coverage. I understand the commercials - the sponsors are paying for all this. But, the in-studio commentary, the human interest stories, the watch parties, the belabored interviews. Some of the associated streaming channels and apps are better.
Finally, it's so easy to be fully informed just by reading headlines, looking at results, and -- as a LOT of people I know are doing -- watching highlight clips. There's a lot of really good extended highlights for completed events.

R195 All Around
You have to have the physical fitness and mental fitness to win. In this case, she didn't have the mental fitness, others don't have the physical fitness. Both need to peak for major competitions and in this case, Simone just didn't have it. She is in a sport where you can serious injure yourself if you compete without the mental or physical fitness to do the skills needed. I am not sure it is brave - although I guess it is rare for athletes to talk about not being mentally fit enough to get the job done. They do talk more about the physical fitness and peaking at the right . wrong time. Some in the news seem to be confusing mental fitness and the ability to stay mentally strong and mentally endure with having a mental health issue or mental illness. Not the same thing.

R181, Too many channels and they still don't show enough competition!
When, back in the day, NBC took ownership of the Olympics telecast, that is the day to rue, for that began the USA! USA!-centric coverage with the "personal stories, family, friends" emphasis.
But because of Covid-19, the family and friends can't be there, so we get the "watch parties." Now, as I posted, the Alaska one was charming, but your "out-dated" observation is duly noted.
One might be forgiven if one thinks that only the US, China, and Team ROC are competing in gymnastics. And even THEN we aren't shown enough!
And why is NBC UNIVERSAL making viewers PAY for Peacick Premium to watch the gymnastics Finals live?
With the Women's Surfing, I saw only the Finals. Were other levels shown?
NBC is going to muck up the golf, I'll bet, starting tonight.

Filipino weightlifter gets $660K, 2 houses and free flights for winning gold
A weightlifter who won the Philippines its first Olympic gold medal will leave Tokyo with an extra $660,000 in tax-free cash prizes, two homes and a lifetime of free flights.
Hidilyn Diaz, 30, took home the top honors in the womenās 55 kilogram lift at the Tokyo Games on Monday, lifting the equivalent of 280 pounds, which is a record.
āHistory. Made,ā the Olympicsās official Twitter account posted on Monday.
Diaz made history ā and also reportedly hit the jackpot.
Her countryās government and some business owners are paying her 33 million pesos ($660,000), according to Bloomberg. Gold winners are guaranteed 10 million pesos from the Philippines Sports Commission but the purse has never been paid out ā until now, the outlet said.
The star weightlifter, who previously won a silver at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, will get a house in Tagaytay for her win, USA Today said ā and developer Megaworld said it will give her a condo in Eastwood valued at 14 million pesos, the company announced.
Diaz will also fly free for life with AirAsia, an airline which says it previously gave her five years of unlimited flights when she won the silver.
āWe want all Asean to believe that they can always make it happen,ā AirAsia spokesperson Steve Dailisan said in a news release.
āAmidst challenges and struggles as we go forth with recovery, Hidilyn reminds us that no matter how heavy the weight we are carrying, inner strength, perseverance, and a heart of gold will help us power through.ā
The Olympian reportedly doesnāt need to worry about getting taxed on the gifts. The countryās tax code says any awards in international sports competitions arenāt taxable to the recipient, Rappler.com noted.
Diaz also received accolades from a spokesperson for President Rodrigo Duterte for bringing home the countryās first gold in 97 years.

R209 - she's going to make more money in endorsements, but will probably also be hounded to give away so much of her earnings to her family or area, presuming she comes from a modest background.
Some countries give out a ridiculous amount of money for gold medals. The US does too - but it's relatively modest at $37,500, compared to $166k in Italy and $1 million in Singapore.

R207 Too bad I don't care about winter Olympics. I guess I'm not your normal Norwegian as I hate snow. I hate skiing. I just don't care about winter sports. Don't know why. I know we do much better in winter olympics, but for me it's much more of an accomplishment to do well in summer olympics. Sadly most Norwegians disagree, which is why the people in charge spend millions more to get results in winter olympics. Sadly the money just isn't there for the summer sports, except for handball (and in particular women's handball). The worst part is that we had so high expectations for this Olympics. We have many athletes competing this year, and many of them are actually medal contenders. The Norwegian Olympic committe said we could win 9 medals. Now... it looks a lot more bleak. A capsizing, a beachvolley loss (which leads to worse seeding for next round) and a men's handball team that has done so well in recent years, but has played horribly this olympics. At least now I know... we will not win any medals in those sports. Maybe the women can win the gold in handball, but the men are playing horribly.
Tl;dr: the Olympics has been a failure for Norway so far, and it looks like it will continue. Sure, we will do better than Rio, but just marginally better. This is still worse than expected. Oh well. Good thing another Olympics is just 3 years away.

Beyond all the trolls are just hating (as overused as that word is), I do understand people saying that Simone should have just toughed it out. Athletes do it physically and mentally all the time. We all tough out the worst of days in our lives. But, I will say -- if she's genuinely not "all there" mentally and can't keep focus, is anxious, distracted, then it's not like swimming 200 meters unfocused. She's flipping end over end 15 feet in the air and if she's losing "air sense", she could really injure herself landing on her back or head. I'm not happy she dropped out, but I don't think she's some awful, evil, unpatriotic person. I think she genuinely believes she's not "right" mentally and shouldn't compete. It honestly benefits her in no way to drop out.

They are showing swimming heats and semis and sacrificing the popular gymnastics.

Swimmer Caeleb Dressel wins men's 100-meter freestyle; Bobby Finke takes gold in 800 free
TOKYO -- In an Olympics where many of the favorites have faltered, Caeleb Dressel lived up to the hype.
Dressel claimed the first individual Olympic gold medal of his career with two furious laps of the pool Thursday morning, winning the 100-meter freestyle over defending champion Kyle Chalmers.
As is his style, Dressel dove into the pool and came up with the lead. He was still ahead at the lone flip and turned away the Aussie's bid for a second straight gold.
Dressel's winning time was an Olympic record of 47.02 seconds, a mere six-hundredths of a second ahead of Chalmers, who had to settle for a silver this time.
The bronze was claimed by Russia's Kliment Kolesnikov (47.44), who added to his silver in the 100 backstroke.
The first three gold medals of Dressel's career were all in the relays: two in Rio de Janeiro, another in the 4x100 free relay at the Tokyo Games.
Now, Dressel has earned one all by himself.
He climbed atop the lane rope, a look of wonder on his face and held up the index finger on each hand -- No. 1 indeed.
Dressel's gold was the second of the morning for the Americans, who got a surprise victory from Bobby Finke in the Olympic debut of the men's 800 free.
Also winning golds: Australia's Izaac Stubblety-Cook in the men's 200 breaststroke and China's Zhang Yufei in the women's 200 butterfly.

Great effort - truly. The Americans have had some lackluster days in the pool, but tonight they were on fire.

R220, I wasn't impressed that much by the Men's Gymnastics shown.
I saw better 1967-1971 in NCAA competitions. Indeed, the major college gymnastics award, the Nissen-Emery Award, is partially named for one Bob Emery of Penn State. He and his teammates would do one-armed handstands on the parallel bars.
As you note, why no rings shown? The strength needed for the Inverted Iron Cross surely would draw viewers!
Ah, well. Never should have done away with the Olympic Year system. Now everything is disjointed, too many years, too many channels, too many minor sports (cheerleading is next, because it's more pseudo-gymnastics than actually leading cheers).

I really didnāt think their gymnastics coverage could get worse but WOW I was wrong. Holy SHIT that was bad. Youād think gymnastics was, at most, a D list Olympic sport from the coverage of the Menās AA. If gymnastics is diminishing in popularity this is not helping.

When did Olympians become such pussies? An Olympian should be in peak physical and mental form, the best of the best. [quote] An Olympian should be in peak physical and mental form, the best of the best.
The pandemic, the postponement of the Olympics due to the pandemic and the changes to training methods caused by restrictions affected many athletes. I agree with the poster who wrote that mental distractions during a sport like swimming or handball isn't in the same league as not being there mentally when you're a gymnast. Other gymnasts have spoken to the press saying that they would advise not competing if a gymnast isn't mentally focused because a careless mistake could result in a serious injury or even paralysis.

Will the country take care of a gymnast who has a fall and ends up paralysed for life?
From the linked article :
[quote] The twisties can also lead to serious injury. Former gymnast Jacoby Miles wrote on Instagram after one particularly bad bout of the twisties mid-air, she broke her neck on landing. "It only took one time of getting lost... in the air for me to break my neck and leave me paralysed, most likely for life," she wrote. The Olympics used to be so entertaining. It was what people talked about for two weeks, like in 1984 (LA), 1992 (Barcelona), 1994 (Lillehammer), 1996 (Atlanta) or 2002 (Salt Lake City). Now it all seems so boring. Maybe it's because there are now so many more entertainment options. Or maybe in the U.S. it's NBC's tedious coverage, and please, NBC, drop the very tired John Williams-scored theme music recycled from the Los Angeles games in 1984 and Atlanta in 1996. And what a huge waste of money for the cities that host it. The whole thing has just become a bloated mess.

[quote] Or maybe in the U.S. it's NBC's tedious coverage,
NBC/Comcast now has more Olympic coverage on more networks and platforms than ever before, but it's all just a big, confusing mess. Trying to find what you're looking for is a chore: Is it live or tape-delayed? Is it on NBC or CNBC or Peacock or the website or YouTube or the app? Good luck trying to find video of a specific event. I find myself searching for the video of an event, then having to sign in with my cable provider and watch several minutes of ads, only to discover it's not what I was looking for.
by Anonymous | reply 245 | July 29, 2021 10:36 AM |
I concur, R245.
I have Hulu Live (which has an Olympics hub), I pay for Peacock, I have the NBC Sports app on my TV, and I still find it impossible to watch or record the events I want to see in their entirety.
At the same time, I see an event I'm interested in scheduled for primetime coverage (like the men's gymnastics team final), I get excited, I make sure to be in front of my TV, and it's a heavily edited 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, there's like two hours of dressage or air rifling on CNBC.

by Anonymous | reply 252 | July 29, 2021 11:13 AM |
I have loved the Olympics, winter and summer, since I was old enough to first remember them (1984).
It used to be so much more cohesive and dramatic: You would have a whole night of women's gymnastics, a whole night of men's gymnastics, a whole night of diving. Swimming and track and field were always quick races, so they would be spliced in.
But you could root along and nail-bite and compare the various nations to each otherāwhen people or teams took gold, it was clear why.
Now it's edited to all hell, stripped of context, and that diminishes the victors.
Mmeanwhile, nothing is gained. I never finished an Olympics broadcast feeling unsatisfied. This year, there's no satisfaction unless it's swimmingāevery night, I'm like, "WTF? I'm missing something. I'm missing everything."

Imagine working tirelessly for years with one goal in mind - Olympic gold. Then, not only going to the Olympics, but being a favorite to win. Then, getting Covid ( with no symptoms) and having your dream shattered and all of those years wasted. If it was all because he didn't get vaccinated, then more is the tragedy; the tragedy of stupidity. A hard lesson learned, but he won't be the only one whose decision will result in shattered dreams. The whole point of the mixed medley relay - a new Olympic event - is that itās tactical. Two men. Two women. Anybody can swim any stroke, so the lead should change constantly which makes it entertaining.

The Americans who dominate swimming are almost entirely white all-American types whereas the women's gymnastics teams have become very diverse with three consecutive AA finals won by women of color. It wouldn't surprise me at all if NBC, still stuck in a 1984 LA Games mindset, assumes that Americans (read "average white Americans") want to see white Americans dominate and don't want to watch black or Asian athletes taking over a traditionally "white" sport.

I think the w100m might be too close to call. You canāt count Ta Lou out either.
I read yesterday that SMU confirmed she will do the 200/400 double. She is close to a lock for gold in the 400; her medaling in the 200 is iffy, but with how these Olympics have played out, you never know.

Going through the current world records in the women's track and field events, it's laughable how many records set in the 80s still remain unbroken. Nothing suspicious about it at all. No sir.
Joyner (100m, 200m), Koch (400m), Kratochvilova (800m), Soviet Union (4x400 relay), Chistiakova (Long jump), Kostadinova (High jump), Joyner Kersee (heptathlon).
The 4x100 WR set by GDR in 1985 was finally broken in 2012 by the US, but I have my doubts over whether a certain member of the US squad was indeed clean. She is a known drug cheat.
I think T&F is too far gone to recover. They should just make all PEDs legal and let athletes destroy their bodies in their pursuit of gold.

"Sprinter Blessing Okagbare is out of the Tokyo Olympics after being suspended for failing a drugs test.
The Nigerian had won her 100m heat on Friday and was due to race in the semi-finals on Saturday.
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said the 32-year-old had tested positive for a human growth hormone following an out-of-competition test on 19 July.
Okagbare, Olympic long jump silver medallist in Beijing in 2008, had posted a time of 11.05 seconds in her 100m heat and was set to line up against Asher-Smith and Jamaica's Elaine Thompson-Herath in the first semi-final.
The news comes two days after 10 other Nigerian athletes were declared ineligible for the Games.
The AIU ruled they were unable to take part because of non-compliance with out-of-competition drug testing requirements in the run-up to the Olympics."

There was a lot of criticism about the BBC to begin with but it's subsided. I tend to start watching at 7am UK time and they balance the highlights of the overnight events with ongoing events. Having every sport available to watch was nice for London and Rio but I think most people appreciate the BBC don't have unlimited funds. The people criticising them for not doing a deal would be the first to accuse the BBC of wasting money if they had outbid Eurosport/Discovery.
It's been a really nice feeling to wake up, check my phone to see what medals GB have won, then go downstairs to watch.
I echo the comments about the BBC's evenhandedness of their coverage, focusing on non British competitors. Naturally there are some British journalists who disagree. This article by Jonathan Liew was widely ridiculed. This is the same Jonathan Liew who wrote an article attacking Martina Navratilova and argued that even if trans women did dominate sport at the expense of female athletes, it would be a good thing.

Wtf is with the new mixed relay events in swimming? There are already two dozen or so events in swimming. Why do we need even more?
US track legend Michael Johnson has said he is not a fan of the mixed track relay (4x400m mixed) either and thinks it is pointless. BTW what's the gossip on Johnson? I don't recall ever hearing anything about his personal life. Straight?
by Anonymous | reply 364 | July 31, 2021 8:13 AM |
R363, writers like Liew are going to complain no matter what. If the coverage focuses on athletes from other nations there would be someone complaining that the media are ignoring the homegrown athletes, many of whom are black and from disadvantaged backgrounds, and claim that this was a typical example of the institutional racism in British sport. There is no appeasing the types who are performative victims.
If the BBC doesn't celebrate the accomplishments of Jade Jones or Dina Asher Smith, who the fuck is going to? Syrian TV? The Iranian press? The Japanese media?

[quote]Johnson currently lives in Marin County, California, with his second wife Armine Shamiryan, a chef, and his son Sebastian, born in 2000 during his first marriage to entertainment reporter Kerry D'Oyen.
I like the mixed relays, if only because it highlights the disparity between elite male and female athletes. Nigeria put a man on the third leg in the 400m track relay and he powered past the women before handing over to a woman for the final lap. Naturally she was overtaken by all the men.
The 100m swimming relay was a great watch. Team GB won with a F M M F combination. USA had Caeleb Dressel on the final leg and he had a huge gap to make up. Another 20 metres and he might have done it.

His singling out of the coverage of Jade Jones was quite odd, when Lutalo Muhammad's analysis of Taekwondo has been one of the most widely praised parts of the BBC's coverage. So much so Liew's main employer The Guardian profiled him based on the praise, highlighting his analysis of Jade Jones' defeat.

Looks like Tokyo will be another bad Olympics performance by Norway. We only have two medals (one gold, one silver) and we only have three medal chances left. Several of our medal hopes have failed. The Norwegian Olympic Comittee predicted 8 medals in total. We are FAR behind that goal. It's simply not possible anymore. At least this Olympics is marginally better than Rio, just marginally. We have one gold and one silver, which trumps the four bronze from Rio. Still, I'm not happy. Oh well, it is what it is. Hopefully we'll do better in Paris.

The new Mixed-Gender events are an illustrative case of "Be careful what you wish for."
Because while the obvious conclusion to draw from observation is that women cannot compete successfully in direct physical competition with men, there is another lesson being implied, and it is currently out of favor.
That lesson is that "trans-women" will defeat women (and girls) in direct physical competition, and thus "trans-women" do not belong in women's events.

The BBC discussed the track relays with Olympic champions Denise Lewis, Michael Johnson and Jessica Ennis, who have 6 Olympic golds between them. They discussed race tactics and the order in which the runners go and the BBC host Gabby Logan made the obvious point "there's no way a woman is going to run faster than a man" and her guests agreed.
Gabby Logan is a former gymnast, the daughter of a footballer and wife of a rugby player, and she was one of many people who took issue with Jonathan Liew's "if a biological woman never wins a sporting event again it will be great" article.

Andy Murray plays a sport that's had Mixed Doubles for over a century. But two points:
Martina Navritalova was an extraordinary player in all her tennis events, including MD; a contemporary Mixed Doubles female player said she would never advise the event for a top-ranked Singles player, given the real possibility of injuries from the speed of the men's serves, e.g.

I think the reason they added mixed events is to make things more fun and interesting. They need different strategy too - it was fascinating to watch the American coaches fuck up the strategy in the swimming event because they put a female breaststroker on the team which is madness when Peaty was 8 seconds faster than her. All of the swimming fans couldn't believe it, can the US coaches not even do simple mathematical adding up of times?

by Anonymous | reply 396 | July 31, 2021 6:29 PM |
r396, even Caeleb Dressel can't make up that kind of gap. Every single other team put a man on the breast stroke leg and a woman on the freestyle leg because the biggest time differential between men and women is in the breast, and the smallest time differential is in freestyle. That's basic mixed relay strategy and if you add up people's best times on paper it makes logical sense. I don't know what the US coaches were thinking but it's why they didn't even medal in that event. And they do have decent male breast stroke swimmers so I don't know what they were thinking. Someone suggested that maybe they declined but 2 or 3 declining seems highly unlikely.

He came to the UK in 2014 for the Commonwealth Games and sought refugee status, initially living on the streets because he didn't want to go back to Cameroon because he was fearful for his life.
After attempting suicide he was taken to a mental health unit and recovered. He's since qualified as a mental health nurse and is representing the Refugee Olympic Team.

On the subject of "mixed" events, when Tom Daley was being interviewed on the BBC the other day, he said something about discussion about mixed events in synchronized diving. .. I recalled that I saw something like that at the FINA world championships a few years ago. I can't recall if it was actual competition or just some kind of demonstration event. Anyway, I remember it looking kind of odd, since the symmetry of the dives was off due to the difference in body shapes/heights, and of course, the swimsuits that the two divers were wearing .. lol!
by Anonymous | reply 405 | July 31, 2021 8:29 PM |
They should introduce a diving relay.
Each team has 4 divers. The first diver dives with the baton then has to swim over to the 2nd diver waiting at the side of the pool to hand them the baton. 2nd diver then has to run a lap of the pool to hand baton to 3rd diver at bottom of stairs to the board. 3rd diver then passes to 4th diver who dives and then swims over to 1st diver waiting at the side of the pool who then run a lap of the pool and pass it to 2nd diver at bottom of stairs...
A points scheme will be worked out to balance speed of the relay against diving scores and effective penalties for baton drops, concussions and dick slips.

Elaine looked so good during the last phase of the 100m race, I feel like she is a lock for the podium in 200m. I downvoted Shericka Jackson because her top end speed was not as fast as I was anticipating. The way that Elaine ran down SAFP makes me think she is not running down Gabby or SMU either, plus 200 is her weaker event.
Also, Jenna Prandini could be in the mix and though she is far from her 2015 form, if Schippers manages her rounds, she could be in the hunt too.
Basically, the w200m final is going to be stacked and going to be fast.
For T&F fans tomorrow - Rojas will most certainly be on a mission to break the WR in the womenās triple jump; Andre de Grasse in the 100; a monster 400mh semi-final featuring Warholm vs Benjamin - this could be another potential WR.

R91: Well, Jalen Rose was all alone on that stupid "hot-take" island. I'm a bit of an NBA junkie, so I watch (or listen to) most of those shows like Get Up, First Take, Undisputed, The Jump, etc.
Some in the Twitterverse may have agreed with him, but all of the other African-American commentators I heard speak about it were like, "WTF is he talking about??" They denounced his comments, pointing out that the four of the last five Olympic squads have been comprised entirely of black players. The one exception: 2012, when Kevin Love was on the team (and lead them in rebounding)
They also felt it was incredibly disrespectful to Love who -- despite recent struggles with his game & injuries -- is still a 5x NBA All-Star, 2x All-NBA Second Team, 2016 NBA Champion, and 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist.* If he received any "special" consideration, it wasn't due to his skin-color (Pop wouldn't stand for that). It was due to his resume & previous international experience (he was also on the 2010 FIBA gold-medal team).
Rose's "apology" was a joke. He apologized to "the game" and to the "greats" in his life (like his late-mother) or some such nonsense. No mention of Kevin Love, who was just minding his own business, playing basketball.
*Meanwhile, Jalen's most notable career achievements: All-Rookie Second Team & Most Improved Player. Twenty years from now, he'll be remembered for his hairline & being part of the Greatest NCAA Finals Choke-Job ever.

There were not a lot of stuck landings in gymnastics. A lot of out of bounds on floor. The men were far worse than women.
Someone on the Simone thread is trying to make going out of bounds about Simone trying to diminish her accomplishments. Many have gone out of bounds including little Nikita from Russia. They said this floor is very bouncy so you shouldnāt penalize athletes for doing very difficult routines while going out of bounds (back in the day it would have took you out of contention) when it could be the apparatus.

by Anonymous | reply 474 | August 1, 2021 6:43 PM |
Someone posted in one of the Simone Biles threads that the Chinese team is still clinging to the old ideas about what a female gymnast's body shape should be like which has hurt them in an era of power tumbling where the most successful gymnasts are all built like powerful linebackers.
by Anonymous | reply 475 | August 1, 2021 7:09 PM |
R475, I recently watched 'Athlete A' which commentated that gymnasts used to be fully matured women but that the KƔrolyis introduced much younger women as gymnasts which was successful, and I recall that in 2008 there was a ton of talk about the Chinese lying about how old their gymnasts were.... Young appears to be considered better in gymnastics.

Woooow. They are showing gymnastics during the day right now not in primetime. If I was a kid and this was my first gymnastics I would not think it was a marquee event. I bet when all is said and done, if you add up airtime for track, swimming and gymnastics, track and swimming will have hours over gymnastics.
Iāve never seen such skimpy coverage for gymnastics.
by Anonymous | reply 479 | August 1, 2021 9:47 PM |
Simone could compete floor, but would not be competitive. At best she could perform the Biles I, double layout, double pike, double tuck for her passes assuming her air sense issues could handle the half twist on the Biles. There is little hope that sheād medal with such a watered down routine.
On beam, she can add difficulty to the set while downgrading the dismount to a double pike. She could be competitive without twisting elements. Sheās likely working with coaches to see what they can cobble together before withdrawing.

NBC couldnāt bother to show the bronze medalist in vault but sure asf showed both non medaling Russians! All not in primetime. I guess so they can so all the billions of track heats. [quote]Emily Campbell has just guaranteed herself a medal in the +87kg weightlifting. That means she will become the first British female to win an Olympic weightlifting medal.

It would be better for the sport and for the team if Biles loses.

Two DSD women into the 200M final and could medal if improvement continues. One has already improved by almost a second.

I just watched the replay of USA women's volleyball being bitch slapped by the ROC. I hope JT is back for the QFs. ROC looked good without her but the team was embarrassed after she was injured. ROC women just are too good on that block. DAMN. They cannot win gold.

[quote]Sifan Hassan of NED is inspiring - fell & ultimately won in 1500 qualifying, and then wins gold in final
Even more amazing is that she fell in the 1500m heats and still qualified on Monday and then won gold in the 5000m today (Tuesday).
She's competing in the 1500m, 5000m and 10000m
She runs in the 1500m semi final tomorrow (Wednesday), the final is on Friday, and then the 10000m final is on Saturday.
by Anonymous | reply 538 | August 2, 2021 2:52 PM |
I was glad to see Sifan Hassan win, but talk about a gift she got from the lead pack! I thought they would take it out fast to ensure Hassan had to burn a lot of energy, but they turned it into a kickerās race which worked to her advantage.
Regarding the Womenās 200m - I have to change my predictions and have no idea other than Elaine Thompson for gold. It is a toss up between Gabby Thomas, SAFP, SMU and Mboma for the other medals.
Both menās 400m races, flat and hurdles, should be fire. Mondo is a lock for pole vault gold.

Good for Jade. The men on FX donāt do any choreography or other ballet shit so why should the women? I know some of you older viewers loved it but this is a sport. If the men donāt have to do it the women shouldnāt either. Jade won because she does insanely difficult routines. End of story. Donāt hate-masterbate.
So IF Biles medals on beam, she would tie Shannon Miller as most decorated female gymnast for the US. Thatās the best she can do and I think that is why she is doing this. It is also the biggest tell she is retiring after Tokyo.
I was joking about Nassar being the menās physician obviously but that squeeze of Alecās nipple was odd. Iād like to squeeze many things on Alec.

The BBC just covered the women's hockey semi final where Team GB beat Spain on penalties to get to the semi finals. Team GB are the defending champions.
Jason Mohamed is the main host for the later afternoon review show and joining him in the studio was Kate Richardson-Walsh, who captained the team to the gold medal. She's married to Kate Richardson-Walsh who was in the Rio gold medal winning team and both have since retired and have had a baby.
They interviewed the mother of Leah Wilkinson, the most capped GB Hockey player, but also the most capped Welsh player in ANYTHING. Leah's mother talked about how proud of her daughter she is, how her daughter has balanced her teaching job and hockey career and how stressful it was to watch and that she didn't know Leah's girlfriend Sarah Jones was talking one of the penalties. Leah's mum had spoken to Sarah's mum about how stressful it was to watch.
That's how normal being gay is in Britain right now. Just matter of fact.
I hope everyone around the world will be cheering on the GB Hockey Lesbians.

Caeleb Dressel was miserable during Olympic dominance
American swimmer Caeleb Dressel, fresh off a record-tying Olympic performance in which he captured gold medals in each of his five races, told reporters that he is āpretty over swimmingā following his final win on Sunday.
āThis is not easy, not an easy week at all,ā Dressel said. āSome parts were extremely enjoyable. I would say the majority of them were not. You canāt sleep right, you canāt nap, shaking all the time. I probably lost 10 pounds. Iām going to weigh myself and eat some food when I get back. Itās a lot of stress we put on the body.ā
Although Dressel has taken to journaling in order to better cope with his emotions, the Olympics left him too drained to write.
āI am pretty good at putting a face on,ā Dressel said. āI knew that weight was on my shoulders. (But) pressure is fine. It is when you turn it into stress, that is when it becomes a problem.ā
Mental health has become an increasingly pertinent subject during the Tokyo Olympics. Dresselās remarks come in the wake of Simone Bilesā decision to withdraw from several Olympic events over her own mental health concerns.
Despite the toll on his health, Dressel acknowledged that he has no regrets about participating.
āItās not the most enjoyable process, but it is worth it,ā Dressel said. āEvery part of it is worth it. Just cause itās bad doesnāt mean itās not worth it.ā

Erica Sullivan who took silver behind Ledecky in the 1500m might be the first out US swimming team member whilst still competing. It's almost always the women rather than the men who feel ok coming out.

Biles is not the favorite for beam, the tiny chinese girls are, but their nerves have been pretty bad. Suni Lee also had higher scores than Biles did in qualification. These ladies though, you would think they would know enough and have been told to get off social media, after working so hard for the past 4 years yet they allow themselves to get distracted on tiktok, twitter and instagram. I follow them on insta and theyve been posting nonstop. They complain about haters, when the media is sucking their dick 24/7, just because some random troll said something bad about them. How the team allowed Suni to do interview after interview when she wasnt done competing yet. She is normally focused but did her worst bars routine and somehow medalled.

Leon Taylor (silver medallist in 2004) is commentating on the diving for the BBC and is making no effort to fluff up poor performances.

Is Colin Jackson hinting that Warholm's WR might have been the result of, er, illegal methods? He compared it to Usain Bolt's and Flo Jo's WR times. Bolt is assumed to have been clean but doesn't pretty much everyone assume that Flo Jo was a drug cheat?

The Danish cyclist should be disqualified for his behaviour in the velodrome.
Not necessarily for the accident but for his reaction and shouting at the Team GB cyclist, who was a last minute replacement for Ed Clancy, who was going for his 4th consecutive gold in the Team Pursuit but was injured ahead of the race and has now retired from cycling.

Norwegian - I know it has been an underwhelming Olympics for Norway. What Warholm did, it has to erase all of the disappointment!
by Anonymous | reply 589 | August 3, 2021 11:22 AM |
The Olympic hosts have said this is the fastest running track they've ever used, which explains some of the performances.
Not that takes anything away from Warholm.

Our men's handball team crashed out to Denmark. They will beat us at medals this year. Both Sweden and Denmark will. We will be worst in Scandinavia. It has been a very disappointing Olympics for us. We have four 4th places. And some of our medal hopes have not performed well at all. Like men's handball. I truly believe they could have won a medal if they played their best. They played like shit hence the QF exit. Denmark fully deserved to win. Now we only have two medal chances left. It's not looking good. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled with Warholm's gold, but Norway is still underperforming.

R590, most major tracks are getting faster, it is just part of the evolution of the sport. The World Championship meet next year is going to be fun. The oval in Eugene will probably be faster than this one in Tokyo.

Looks unlikely that Team GB will overtake Japan on golds but I'm happy for the host nation to do so well.
For the second tier European nations, Germany have inched ahead of France, Italy and Netherlands.
China and the US have the same number of medals but China have 10 more golds than the US.
