Lol at the Spain-Egypt tie in men's football. It ended 0-0. They will NEVER win if they can't even score against Egypt.

by Anonymousreply 1July 22, 2021 12:12 PM

LOL at the US women losing to Sweden 3-0. They suck big balls.

by Anonymousreply 2July 22, 2021 12:15 PM

Well no wonder they're losing, R2. They're meant to kick them.

by Anonymousreply 3July 22, 2021 12:25 PM

Watching an Ian Thorpe documentary on tv right now. I had no idea he was so successful. I sorta remember he was a great swimmer, winning Olympics. I just didn't know the scope of it, how popular he was etc. It's great that he came out as gay.

by Anonymousreply 4July 23, 2021 9:59 AM

Australia beat Argentina in men's football 2-0. Did hell freeze over? All the best football teams are dropping like flies. Wonder why...

by Anonymousreply 5July 23, 2021 11:08 AM

Anyone watching the opening ceremonies?

by Anonymousreply 6July 23, 2021 11:08 AM

Troll thread. Don't feed it. It's just another Defarto thread. They are a dime a dozen. Literally.

by Anonymousreply 7July 23, 2021 11:15 AM

Where are the hot guys?

by Anonymousreply 8July 23, 2021 11:23 AM

Do you think the rest of the world is baffled as to why we have Al Roker? The fugly, ashy, irritating troll is everywhere. How did ever even get on TV, since he weighed about 300 lbs. when he started on the Today show?

by Anonymousreply 9July 23, 2021 3:34 PM

Was there an opening ceremony?

by Anonymousreply 10July 23, 2021 3:38 PM

R8 Are you referring to the opening ceremony only, or hot Olympic athletes in general? Not all athletes were allowed at the opening ceremony (because of covid they limited the number), and some couldn't attend because they have competition shortly after the ceremony.

by Anonymousreply 11July 23, 2021 3:40 PM

It just finished, R10.

by Anonymousreply 12July 23, 2021 3:44 PM

Hot ones in the Olympic in general, R11. Usually there's a "cover boy" being promoted by now.

by Anonymousreply 13July 23, 2021 4:53 PM

China and Iran get the first 2 Gold medals

by Anonymousreply 14July 24, 2021 7:34 AM

Norway with a 4th place in shooting. Fucking typical.

by Anonymousreply 15July 24, 2021 7:50 AM

Any Canadians here? Looks like you might get a medal in cycling, maybe. Norway is usually good in cycling, but this is a climbing track, and we don't have any good climbers, sadly. There's a Colombian, Canadian, American and Slovakian in the lead, and more. 27.5 km to go.

by Anonymousreply 16July 24, 2021 7:54 AM

I have to admit I was a little bit underwhelmed by the Opening Ceremonies. There were a lot of missed opportunities, IMO. There was so much rich Japanese heritage-meets-technology-and-modern-pop-culture that they could've drawn from, but the artistic director clearly wanted to go in a different direction, and the result of that were a lot of jumbled, disparate vignettes.

by Anonymousreply 17July 24, 2021 7:59 AM

13 cyclists can win this race, including a Dane, an American and a Canadian. No Norwegians, sadly.

by Anonymousreply 18July 24, 2021 8:01 AM

Pogacar!!!

by Anonymousreply 19July 24, 2021 8:09 AM

Congrats, Americans. McNulty will either win gold or silver in cycling.

by Anonymousreply 20July 24, 2021 8:18 AM

Watching cycling. OMG Ecuador is in the lead now!

by Anonymousreply 21July 24, 2021 8:19 AM

Ecuador is a small developing country. Winning a gold medal means so much to them. It make me happy.

by Anonymousreply 22July 24, 2021 8:25 AM

What's good about being a small country with few athletes competing is that we also follow/watch other sports.

by Anonymousreply 23July 24, 2021 8:26 AM

So happy for Carapaz!

by Anonymousreply 24July 24, 2021 8:29 AM

R24 Same! So well deserved. It is huge for such a small developing country to win gold. It's only their second Olympics gold ever. That says it all about how much it means to the people of Ecuador. And the fact that Carapaz was the one to win gold is just icing on the cake. He is a hero in his country.

by Anonymousreply 25July 24, 2021 8:32 AM

I came for the breathtaking visible penis lines šŸ†.

I left because there doesn't seem to be any.

by Anonymousreply 26July 24, 2021 8:35 AM

Turns out Belgium won the silver after the photo finish.

by Anonymousreply 27July 24, 2021 8:37 AM

Aww this hug between the Ecuadorian cyclists was so cute!

by Anonymousreply 28July 24, 2021 8:40 AM

The poor Japanese gymnast Uchimura crashing on the high bar means he won't qualify for the event finals in his farewell performance. He looked devastated. Poor guy!

by Anonymousreply 29July 24, 2021 9:11 AM

So this is interesting, the medalists have to take their medals and bouquets off the trays presented by the officials and put the medal on themselves. Social distancing and all that.

Naturally the bronze and silver medalists joke about taking the gold, hardy har har.

by Anonymousreply 30July 24, 2021 9:29 AM

[quote] So this is interesting, the medalists have to take their medals and bouquets off the trays presented by the officials and put the medal on themselves.

Do you want fries with that?

by Anonymousreply 31July 24, 2021 9:34 AM

And now a fucking typhoon is headed for Tokyo. What will happen to the water sports, like sailing, rowing etc?

by Anonymousreply 32July 24, 2021 10:03 AM

Some of the South African field hockey players are hunks.

by Anonymousreply 33July 24, 2021 10:03 AM

This Spanish swimmer is kinda cute.

by Anonymousreply 34July 24, 2021 10:15 AM

The report is that the heat was brutal there yesterday and a tropical storm is heading that way soon.

[quote] "I came for the breathtaking visible penis lines šŸ†.

My heart hurt for Uchimura. That man is a legend. The greatest. I hope he feels better about Team Japan being in 1st.

by Anonymousreply 37July 24, 2021 11:17 AM

Why do so many of the American female swimmers and gymnasts look like truck drivers? The American track athletes look almost petite in comparison.

by Anonymousreply 38July 24, 2021 11:38 AM

In lust with Swiss swimmer Jeremy Desplanches.

by Anonymousreply 39July 24, 2021 11:45 AM

The good thing with football is it is not single elimination. You can lose a game and still be viable to advance to the next round.

by Anonymousreply 40July 24, 2021 12:06 PM

Swimming session just ended. Lots of hot hunks to enjoy.

by Anonymousreply 41July 24, 2021 12:11 PM

Two channels, national broadcasting channel with dozens live streams and Discovery+. Almost too to choose. Dressage is one of those I have no idea what is a good performance. Itā€™s on now.

by Anonymousreply 42July 24, 2021 12:15 PM

How can the Americans not get any medals in shooting. This nation is practically obsessed with its guns yet has nothing to show for it.

by Anonymousreply 43July 24, 2021 12:21 PM

The American gymnasts are so hot.

by Anonymousreply 44July 24, 2021 12:32 PM

R43 owning a gun doesnā€™t make you a proā€¦ it should be a requirement though.

by Anonymousreply 45July 24, 2021 12:33 PM

Understandable.

The Opening Ceremonies were really pared down. One of the commentators stated that following the development of Covid, planners had to scrap everything and begin anew. Donā€™t think it was particularly easy for the Japanese: along with the reconfiguring, it was also necessary to set a respectful tone as the world still seems in the throes of the virus. Couple this with Japanā€™s populace overtly against holding the Olympics (and being unable to attend these events in their own country!), it was a delicate balance to strike. If anyone could create a theme of ā€œrespectfulā€, it would be the Japanese.

Although it might have appeared disjointed, I feel for the Japanese hosting this particular Olympics. They are in a tight spot (no thanks to the IOC), and they may pay more than a heavy financial price for these games. I truly hope no lives are lost as a result of this international event.

by Anonymousreply 46July 24, 2021 12:36 PM

American women's soccer team crushes NZ. Guess that will make them feel better after being humiliated by Sweden.

by Anonymousreply 47July 24, 2021 1:32 PM

Women's soccer? Americans? Probably filthy lesbians, all of them. Evil! Just like Billy Gene King.

by Anonymousreply 48July 24, 2021 1:40 PM

Jean, R48, Jean.

by Anonymousreply 49July 24, 2021 3:40 PM

Hooray - the US men's gymnastics team qualified for team final in 4th spot, but will unlikely to medal . . . again.

by Anonymousreply 50July 24, 2021 5:23 PM

Are the monster trucks of the US women's gymnastics team going to win team gold again? Is Aly Raisman still part of the team?

by Anonymousreply 51July 24, 2021 6:18 PM

I feel like I'll catch covid just watching this crap.

by Anonymousreply 52July 24, 2021 6:25 PM

Women's Beach Volleyball. Thanks, but no thanks.

What's up next? Skateboarding? .. LOL

by Anonymousreply 53July 25, 2021 12:41 AM

R51, the U.S. women are almost certain to win gold in gymnastics -- 99%.

by Anonymousreply 54July 25, 2021 12:43 AM

So BORING!

by Anonymousreply 55July 25, 2021 12:56 AM

Ahmed Hafnaoui the shock 400m freestyle swimming gold medalist from Tunisia is a fine figure of a man.

by Anonymousreply 56July 25, 2021 2:30 AM

Jesus Christ, skateboarding was HORRIBLE. They need to drop that crap from future games again pronto. There are few things sadder than anyone over the age of 16 on a skateboard. Most of them fell and even the ones that didn't did tricks that looked boring, regardless of the difficulty.

by Anonymousreply 57July 25, 2021 4:41 AM

Somebody get Tony Hawk some moisturizer.

by Anonymousreply 58July 25, 2021 4:44 AM

They also really need to get rid of the god damn windchimes on the set with Mike Tirrico.

by Anonymousreply 59July 25, 2021 4:44 AM

The windchimes are torture.

by Anonymousreply 60July 25, 2021 4:45 AM

Tonga forever!

by Anonymousreply 61July 25, 2021 4:47 AM

R58, yeah, Tony Hawk has had too much exposure to the sun over the years. His nonprofit work that he talked about was interesting though. I didn't know he did that.

by Anonymousreply 62July 25, 2021 5:22 AM

I hate Mike Tirico. He's fat, smug and just unpleasant to behold.

And he was openly hostile and mocking toward Savannah Guthrie during the opening ceremonies. Who does he think he is?

by Anonymousreply 63July 25, 2021 9:31 AM

Simone Biles got her own šŸ emoji? WTF? I showed my tits and cooch to the world! Doesn't that count for anything? You DL gays better support me. After all I married one of you.

by Anonymousreply 64July 25, 2021 9:38 AM

Eldergay Brit swimmer Mark Foster has aged horribly. Looks terrible on the BBC coverage.

by Anonymousreply 65July 25, 2021 10:09 AM

R51, Aly retired after Rio.

by Anonymousreply 66July 25, 2021 10:43 AM

How disappointing to see so many countries' athletes wearing boring blah blue blazers in the Parade of Nations. Where is the cultural pageantry? At least many African nations didn't disappoint.

by Anonymousreply 67July 25, 2021 12:00 PM

[quote] I hate Mike Tirico. He's fat, smug and just unpleasant to behold. And he was openly hostile and mocking toward Savannah Guthrie during the opening ceremonies.

She doesnā€™t deserve any respect, so he gets a lot of bonus points for that.

by Anonymousreply 68July 25, 2021 1:16 PM

She offered nothing during the opening.

by Anonymousreply 69July 25, 2021 3:11 PM

Skateboarding is ridiculous as an Olympic event.

They all fall. There's no thrill to it.

by Anonymousreply 70July 26, 2021 4:17 AM

Woke up to gold in thriathlon. Holy shit! This is huge. What a sport to win. Triathlon is such a hard sport. You have to perform in swimming, running and cycling. This will be our top gold medal this Olympic. Nothing else will come close.

by Anonymousreply 71July 26, 2021 5:50 AM

[quote] How can the Americans not get any medals in shooting. This nation is practically obsessed with its guns yet has nothing to show for it.

if the event was changed to school shooting, we'd be bringing home the Gold!

by Anonymousreply 72July 26, 2021 6:01 AM

Norwegian at R71, congratulations on the triathlon gold. Your winner, Kristian Blummenfelt, is a hot guy too! I am in lust.

by Anonymousreply 73July 26, 2021 6:04 AM

R71 great competition

by Anonymousreply 74July 26, 2021 6:20 AM

R72 You just won in shooting. Women. Skeet.

by Anonymousreply 75July 26, 2021 6:42 AM

Katie Ledecky lost! This is fantastic. Now if only some of the other sure shots will also crash and burn: Djokovic, the entire US women's gymnastics team especially Biles, all the US swimmers, the Chinese divers, the Jamaican track stars.

by Anonymousreply 76July 26, 2021 6:45 AM

I find this Olympics depressing.

On the US side, it's not about up-and-coming stars but those who are on their way down from a peak and will inevitably disappoint: Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky, Sam Mikulik, et. al.

Plus, all the male swimmers are ugly.

by Anonymousreply 77July 26, 2021 6:50 AM

Well, they all can't be Ryan Lochtes. Jeah!

by Anonymousreply 78July 26, 2021 6:54 AM

USA men's swimming kicks ass! USA, USA, USA!!!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 79July 26, 2021 7:11 AM

Media whore Tom Daley won the pairs gold. Now this thing and its husband are going to be even more insufferable than ever.

by Anonymousreply 80July 26, 2021 7:23 AM

Women's gymnastics wasn't as good as expected. They have time but aren't leading. Men's basketball also choked. Women's soccer has to beat Australia to stay in it. Sweden always messes them up.

I agree about the skateboarding, mention upthread. It was lame and shouldn't be an Olympic sport. I'm gonna wait and see how Rock climbing goes but it looked a bit underwhelming in clips. 3 on 3 basketball is a bit of a headscratcher too. Do we need that?

by Anonymousreply 81July 26, 2021 7:44 AM

First time I've seen a gold medalist vomit. Then get carted away in a wheelchair. Triathlon is brutal.

by Anonymousreply 82July 26, 2021 7:49 AM

I wish China had beat GB in the men's synchronized 10m platform. I didn't want Daley to win anything. It's unfortunate that the U.S. didn't qualify to compete in this event at the Olympics, because David Dinsmore and Brandon Loschiavo didn't score high enough at the World Cup this year to gain the berth.

by Anonymousreply 83July 26, 2021 8:00 AM

R80 I'd make sure your telly is turned off when The Queen knights him.

Sir Thomas Daley & Lady Lance-Black

by Anonymousreply 84July 26, 2021 8:03 AM

You're the one who's insufferable, R80.

by Anonymousreply 85July 26, 2021 8:35 AM

[quote] This will be our top gold medal this Olympic.

R71 If they both win gold medals Karsten Warholm and Jakob Ingebritsen might disagree. Ha!

In all seriousness, hats off to Kristian Blummfelt - it was quite the feat!

by Anonymousreply 86July 26, 2021 8:36 AM

Hi Dustin at R85

by Anonymousreply 87July 26, 2021 9:32 AM

Hi Rancid Asshole at r87

by Anonymousreply 88July 26, 2021 10:23 AM

Norway lost against Spain in men's handball. Fuck.

by Anonymousreply 89July 26, 2021 11:25 AM

R86 True, but everyone expects them to win. It won't be a surprise if they do. On the other hand, the triathlon gold was a surprise. Not only that, I'd argue triathlon is one of the hardest sports in the entire Olympics. That is why (at least for me) this gold is special. It will take a lot to top this, I don't see it happening.

by Anonymousreply 90July 26, 2021 11:29 AM

Hope the now all-black US basketball team fails to get a medal. Then we can hear what racist Jalen Rose has to say. Probably blame the white coach.

ESPN basketball analyst Jalen Rose has caught flack for recent comments he made about USA Basketball naming Kevin Love to its roster for next month's Tokyo Olympics. Rose said the move was basically white "tokenism" by the national governing body, saying they are "scared to make an all-Black" squad for the Summer Olympics.

Rose made his comments on the Jalen & Jacoby podcast last week.

"Kevin Love is on the team because of tokenism," Rose said. "Don't be scared to make an all-Black team representing the United States of America. I'm disappointed by that."

by Anonymousreply 91July 26, 2021 11:30 AM

Daley's and roommate's final synchronized dive, they looked like only one diver from the side camera angle. Deserved Gold Medal!

by Anonymousreply 92July 26, 2021 12:38 PM

"team-mate's"

by Anonymousreply 93July 26, 2021 12:39 PM

Richard Ordemann lost his bronze final in taekwondo. Oh well... a 4th place ain't so bad. Sucks that he lost out on a medal though. Fun fact: this is our second 4th place this Olympics. The first one was in shooting. We call it "stang ut" when they are SO close to grabbing a medal, yet it's not enough. So typical.

by Anonymousreply 94July 26, 2021 12:55 PM

I am loving your enjoyment at your country's success, R94. The world has been so joyless, it is good to know someone is getting a little.

by Anonymousreply 95July 26, 2021 12:57 PM

Our sandvolleyball guys are so hot! Love watching them play.

by Anonymousreply 99July 26, 2021 2:03 PM

R90 I do agree, the unexpected wins at the Olympics are always the best, and in something like the triathlon - truly something special. I was just giving you are hard time re: Jakob and Warholm ;)

I donā€™t know if Jakob can get by Cheruiyot but it will be a fast 1500. Iā€™m struggling choosing between Warholm and Benjamin.

I just watch highlights from the handball match. Tough loss for Norway! We just barely beat Japan.

by Anonymousreply 100July 26, 2021 2:16 PM

I am so happy for Japan's medal success. It is leading in the gold medal count with 8.

by Anonymousreply 101July 26, 2021 2:22 PM

The ROC gymnasts were so emotional when they won the menā€™s gymnastics team gold medal.

by Anonymousreply 102July 26, 2021 2:25 PM

Watching the Olympic with some detachment, Iā€™ve become very aware of how inane so much of this is

by Anonymousreply 103July 26, 2021 2:28 PM

R100 True. I think most people expect Jakob to win silver or bronze, not gold. Warholm on the other hand is a shoe-in for gold. He has the world record. I think we will end up with 3 gold medals (Warholm, women's handball and Blummenfeldt) and maybe a couple silver and/or bronze. Anything else is a bonus. Either way we have done better than Rio. We only got 4 bronze in Rio. We already have a gold medal. Gold trumps 4 bronze. They always count number of gold medals in the medal table, not number of medals in total.

by Anonymousreply 104July 26, 2021 2:31 PM

Mike Tirrico is a Trump ass kisser.

by Anonymousreply 105July 26, 2021 2:32 PM

[quote] They always count number of gold medals in the medal table, not number of medals in total.

In the U.S., the ranking is by total number of medals. I realize in other countries they rank by gold medals and pretend that silver and bronze donā€™t exist.

by Anonymousreply 106July 26, 2021 2:36 PM

How are the ratings? The opening ceremony, not surprisingly, was a ratings dud, at least in the U.S.

I used to watch the Games religiously, but nowadays I only watch Rhythmic Gymnastics and Synchronized Swimming for the camp.

by Anonymousreply 108July 26, 2021 2:37 PM

Re the Olympics, I'm quite interested in the venue (architecture, location, etc.) and then the medal count. Other than that, I don't care.

by Anonymousreply 109July 26, 2021 2:39 PM

The easy way to watch these Olympics is on the NBC Sports YouTube channel. They have highlight videos each day of many events that allow you to see the important stuff without having to sit through the boring stuff.

by Anonymousreply 110July 26, 2021 2:45 PM

I know KW has the WR R104; but as a former hurdler, I have a soft spot for Benjamin because of his techniqueā€¦ and his times are nothing to sneeze at either. In any case, Iā€™m looking forward to all of the hurdles finals - there is the potential that world records might be set in all 4 races, incredible.

I think Norway should also get another medal in rowing? Single Sculls?

by Anonymousreply 111July 26, 2021 2:51 PM

R100 I know. It's been 24 years since last time Norway beat Spain. It's their nemessis. We have the best men's handball team in years yet they still couldn't beat Spain smh. They didn't play well either. I know they can play so much better.

by Anonymousreply 112July 26, 2021 3:27 PM

Thanks a lot for the spoiler, a-hole at r102. It's being shown prime-time tonight.

And anyway, who gives a crap about how happy RUSSIANS are??

by Anonymousreply 113July 26, 2021 4:06 PM

Iā€™m stuck at a Ford dealership getting my car worked on and watched the Brazil-Argentina volleyball game. It made me sad: the Argentina team had the cutest guys but they lost. I hate to see cute athletes lose, it breaks my heart.

by Anonymousreply 116July 26, 2021 4:25 PM

For me, I don't find skateboarding to be 'thrilling' in the least. It looks like the same tricks done over and over by kids in our parks.

Yes - they all seem to fall, time and again.

I understand it's a global sport of how to flip your board around and stuff - but it just doesn't seem like a real sport.

by Anonymousreply 117July 26, 2021 4:32 PM

Park skateboarding has more flow to it and is more enjoyable to watch. I don't like street style which is more about the big tricks that often don't work. I wish they had shown the park competition first because now the street stuff has turned off a lot of people, understandably.

Highly, highly doubtful. It's unlikely that Biles will have such an under-performance two nights in a row. Even more unlikely is the possibility of this particular group of Russian women (inconsistent headcases) over-performing that well two nights in a row.

R124 - WTF? You do know that JAPAN is a different country and culture than CHINA, don't you?

by Anonymousreply 128July 26, 2021 8:25 PM

What is the point of ROC. They are still competing as Russia. They are still counting medals for Russia. Essentially, they got caught systematically doping, yeah we are gonna punish you by making you change your name, but you can still do what you are doing. They are all still dopers.

by Anonymousreply 129July 26, 2021 11:35 PM

R129 - I agree - it's not much of a punishment at all.

R119 - that relay swimmer will get his own gold. Caleb didn't give his away - the other guy just got his a bit early. All participants on relays - prelims or finals - get the same medal as those swimming in the final.

OMFG! Who is that one poor hatchet faced blonde girl on the US womenā€™s volleyball team? Has her face been smashed too many times? She looks like a bowling pin! Her number is 14, I think.

Also, the coach, Karch Kiraly is kind of a hot daddy.

by Anonymousreply 131July 27, 2021 4:47 AM

Karch Kiraly posed nude for Bruce Weber in the very early '80s when he was a volleyball star at UCLA.

I was the one who asked the original question about the possibility of an upset. I guess the US was banking heavily on Biles to get them the gold and when she had to pull out, the ROC snuck in to win.

What happened to China? Why have their teams struggled to even win a medal?

by Anonymousreply 144July 27, 2021 12:57 PM

When she chose to put herself first and screwed over the team and the country.

by Anonymousreply 146July 27, 2021 1:07 PM

R146, if she was injured, she could have hurt the team more by not pulling out. She may not have wanted her team to risk low scores due to her and possibly not win any medal. The team managed to capture the silver with the other three gymnasts.

by Anonymousreply 147July 27, 2021 1:13 PM

Speaking of physical injury, look at the Russian male gymnast who had a torn Achilles tendon a few months ago and hasnā€™t fully recovered yet, but who grimaced and cried through the pain and competed so that his team could win the team gold. He couldnā€™t perform at his best and risked further injury, but competed anyway for the team. Thatā€™s what an athlete deserving respect does.

From Friday to Sunday, primetime coverage of the Olympics averaged 15.8 million viewers on NBC, its sibling cable outlets and digital platforms including NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app. (Those figures include final numbers for Friday and preliminary figures for Saturday and Sunday.) Thatā€™s down a bunch from the last Summer Olympics in 2016, which averaged 27.27 million viewers across platforms for its first three nights.

by Anonymousreply 183July 28, 2021 4:45 AM

The coverage is garbage, and NBC has been maligned for it year after year, and they haven't changed shit.

If you watched men's diving the other night or gymnastics tonight, you'd think there were only three nations competing in diving and two in gymnastics.

It's edited to death, and it's not what the Olympics is about.

I don't care if Dee and Dan Plorable only want to see Muricans while they shovel Cheetos into their fat recliner-encased holes. The Olympics is about a meeting of nationsā€”not just in swimming when they can get the camera on everyone at the same time.

by Anonymousreply 184July 28, 2021 4:56 AM

There is an overall lack of excitement, but part of the ratings drop has to simply be the time zone. There's a few live events on early in the morning, some in the evening. But it's not like Rio where things were basically in the same time zone. Even London 6 hours ahead wasn't bad. But 14 hours ahead is a pain.

Also, there's almost too many viewing options. I need a big spreadsheet to know exactly what's going to be on at what time on what channel or app (I've found something close, but incomplete). And I realized I can't watch traditional network coverage. I understand the commercials - the sponsors are paying for all this. But, the in-studio commentary, the human interest stories, the watch parties, the belabored interviews. Some of the associated streaming channels and apps are better.

Finally, it's so easy to be fully informed just by reading headlines, looking at results, and -- as a LOT of people I know are doing -- watching highlight clips. There's a lot of really good extended highlights for completed events.

by Anonymousreply 185July 28, 2021 4:57 AM

[quote] Considering that the track and field competition has yet to commence, I donā€™t know how youā€™ve formed that conclusion

by Anonymousreply 196July 28, 2021 1:22 PM

R195 All Around

You have to have the physical fitness and mental fitness to win. In this case, she didn't have the mental fitness, others don't have the physical fitness. Both need to peak for major competitions and in this case, Simone just didn't have it. She is in a sport where you can serious injure yourself if you compete without the mental or physical fitness to do the skills needed. I am not sure it is brave - although I guess it is rare for athletes to talk about not being mentally fit enough to get the job done. They do talk more about the physical fitness and peaking at the right . wrong time. Some in the news seem to be confusing mental fitness and the ability to stay mentally strong and mentally endure with having a mental health issue or mental illness. Not the same thing.

by Anonymousreply 197July 28, 2021 1:30 PM

R181, Too many channels and they still don't show enough competition!

When, back in the day, NBC took ownership of the Olympics telecast, that is the day to rue, for that began the USA! USA!-centric coverage with the "personal stories, family, friends" emphasis.

But because of Covid-19, the family and friends can't be there, so we get the "watch parties." Now, as I posted, the Alaska one was charming, but your "out-dated" observation is duly noted.

One might be forgiven if one thinks that only the US, China, and Team ROC are competing in gymnastics. And even THEN we aren't shown enough!

And why is NBC UNIVERSAL making viewers PAY for Peacick Premium to watch the gymnastics Finals live?

With the Women's Surfing, I saw only the Finals. Were other levels shown?

NBC is going to muck up the golf, I'll bet, starting tonight.

Sadly I think they will lose. They have played shitty all Olympics. And our men's handball team won... barely, against Argentina. They played really awful. They are through to the quarter finals, but with how they're playing it doesn't look good.

by Anonymousreply 200July 28, 2021 2:23 PM

Sorry, Norwegian friend. I was rooting for your team when it capsized.

by Anonymousreply 201July 28, 2021 2:27 PM

Looks like we might have another Olympics failure on our hands. Reminds me of Rio where we only won 4 bronze, 0 silver and 0 gold. Our biggest medal candidates are doing poorly in Tokyo. And we don't have that many to begin with. Granted, we will do better than Rio because we already have 1 gold, but I doubt this Olympics will be a success for us.

by Anonymousreply 202July 28, 2021 2:28 PM

The same people who are criticizing Simone Biles for pulling out of the team final would have been the ones attacking her if she had chosen to continue, posted low scores, and caused the US to drop to third place or even out of the medals. They would be screaming that she should have done the honorable thing, put her ego aside and let her teammates step up to do better and improve the team's chances. She was going to be attacked no matter what she did.

by Anonymousreply 203July 28, 2021 2:38 PM

Does the US failure to sweep all of the Olympic medals somehow diminish Americans as people? Whom will the Republicans blame?

Filipino weightlifter gets $660K, 2 houses and free flights for winning gold

A weightlifter who won the Philippines its first Olympic gold medal will leave Tokyo with an extra $660,000 in tax-free cash prizes, two homes and a lifetime of free flights.

Hidilyn Diaz, 30, took home the top honors in the womenā€™s 55 kilogram lift at the Tokyo Games on Monday, lifting the equivalent of 280 pounds, which is a record.

ā€œHistory. Made,ā€ the Olympicsā€™s official Twitter account posted on Monday.

Diaz made history ā€” and also reportedly hit the jackpot.

Her countryā€™s government and some business owners are paying her 33 million pesos ($660,000), according to Bloomberg. Gold winners are guaranteed 10 million pesos from the Philippines Sports Commission but the purse has never been paid out ā€“ until now, the outlet said.

The star weightlifter, who previously won a silver at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, will get a house in Tagaytay for her win, USA Today said ā€” and developer Megaworld said it will give her a condo in Eastwood valued at 14 million pesos, the company announced.

Diaz will also fly free for life with AirAsia, an airline which says it previously gave her five years of unlimited flights when she won the silver.

ā€œWe want all Asean to believe that they can always make it happen,ā€ AirAsia spokesperson Steve Dailisan said in a news release.

ā€œAmidst challenges and struggles as we go forth with recovery, Hidilyn reminds us that no matter how heavy the weight we are carrying, inner strength, perseverance, and a heart of gold will help us power through.ā€

The Olympian reportedly doesnā€™t need to worry about getting taxed on the gifts. The countryā€™s tax code says any awards in international sports competitions arenā€™t taxable to the recipient, Rappler.com noted.

Diaz also received accolades from a spokesperson for President Rodrigo Duterte for bringing home the countryā€™s first gold in 97 years.

R209 - she's going to make more money in endorsements, but will probably also be hounded to give away so much of her earnings to her family or area, presuming she comes from a modest background.

Some countries give out a ridiculous amount of money for gold medals. The US does too - but it's relatively modest at $37,500, compared to $166k in Italy and $1 million in Singapore.

by Anonymousreply 210July 28, 2021 4:32 PM

R207 Too bad I don't care about winter Olympics. I guess I'm not your normal Norwegian as I hate snow. I hate skiing. I just don't care about winter sports. Don't know why. I know we do much better in winter olympics, but for me it's much more of an accomplishment to do well in summer olympics. Sadly most Norwegians disagree, which is why the people in charge spend millions more to get results in winter olympics. Sadly the money just isn't there for the summer sports, except for handball (and in particular women's handball). The worst part is that we had so high expectations for this Olympics. We have many athletes competing this year, and many of them are actually medal contenders. The Norwegian Olympic committe said we could win 9 medals. Now... it looks a lot more bleak. A capsizing, a beachvolley loss (which leads to worse seeding for next round) and a men's handball team that has done so well in recent years, but has played horribly this olympics. At least now I know... we will not win any medals in those sports. Maybe the women can win the gold in handball, but the men are playing horribly.

Tl;dr: the Olympics has been a failure for Norway so far, and it looks like it will continue. Sure, we will do better than Rio, but just marginally better. This is still worse than expected. Oh well. Good thing another Olympics is just 3 years away.

Beyond all the trolls are just hating (as overused as that word is), I do understand people saying that Simone should have just toughed it out. Athletes do it physically and mentally all the time. We all tough out the worst of days in our lives. But, I will say -- if she's genuinely not "all there" mentally and can't keep focus, is anxious, distracted, then it's not like swimming 200 meters unfocused. She's flipping end over end 15 feet in the air and if she's losing "air sense", she could really injure herself landing on her back or head. I'm not happy she dropped out, but I don't think she's some awful, evil, unpatriotic person. I think she genuinely believes she's not "right" mentally and shouldn't compete. It honestly benefits her in no way to drop out.

Greek sports commentator fired for shocking comment about South Korean athlete

The remark by Dimosthenis Karmiris, in reference to table tennis player Jeoung Young-sik, were deemed racist by ERT television, who subsequently cut ties with the veteran journalist.

ā€œRacist comments have no place on public television,ā€ the network said in a statement.

ā€œThe collaboration between ERT and Dimosthenis Karmiris was terminated today, immediately after the morning show.ā€

Swimmer Caeleb Dressel wins men's 100-meter freestyle; Bobby Finke takes gold in 800 free

TOKYO -- In an Olympics where many of the favorites have faltered, Caeleb Dressel lived up to the hype.

Dressel claimed the first individual Olympic gold medal of his career with two furious laps of the pool Thursday morning, winning the 100-meter freestyle over defending champion Kyle Chalmers.

As is his style, Dressel dove into the pool and came up with the lead. He was still ahead at the lone flip and turned away the Aussie's bid for a second straight gold.

Dressel's winning time was an Olympic record of 47.02 seconds, a mere six-hundredths of a second ahead of Chalmers, who had to settle for a silver this time.

The bronze was claimed by Russia's Kliment Kolesnikov (47.44), who added to his silver in the 100 backstroke.

The first three gold medals of Dressel's career were all in the relays: two in Rio de Janeiro, another in the 4x100 free relay at the Tokyo Games.

Now, Dressel has earned one all by himself.

He climbed atop the lane rope, a look of wonder on his face and held up the index finger on each hand -- No. 1 indeed.

Dressel's gold was the second of the morning for the Americans, who got a surprise victory from Bobby Finke in the Olympic debut of the men's 800 free.

Also winning golds: Australia's Izaac Stubblety-Cook in the men's 200 breaststroke and China's Zhang Yufei in the women's 200 butterfly.

Silver medalist Michael Hixon is a sexy man. He looks awesome in his speedos during his dives.

R222 Personally, I like the ginger Andrew. Is he really gay? Seems to be.

Michael Hixon is a hotty, and apparently a very humble, unassuming person.

by Anonymousreply 224July 29, 2021 3:53 AM

It's a shame Ledecky couldn't have come out ahead of China in that relay - that was a real shocker. Australia was supposed to win by 4 seconds. And they got third.

Great effort - truly. The Americans have had some lackluster days in the pool, but tonight they were on fire.

by Anonymousreply 225July 29, 2021 4:33 AM

R220, I wasn't impressed that much by the Men's Gymnastics shown.

I saw better 1967-1971 in NCAA competitions. Indeed, the major college gymnastics award, the Nissen-Emery Award, is partially named for one Bob Emery of Penn State. He and his teammates would do one-armed handstands on the parallel bars.

As you note, why no rings shown? The strength needed for the Inverted Iron Cross surely would draw viewers!

Ah, well. Never should have done away with the Olympic Year system. Now everything is disjointed, too many years, too many channels, too many minor sports (cheerleading is next, because it's more pseudo-gymnastics than actually leading cheers).

I really didnā€™t think their gymnastics coverage could get worse but WOW I was wrong. Holy SHIT that was bad. Youā€™d think gymnastics was, at most, a D list Olympic sport from the coverage of the Menā€™s AA. If gymnastics is diminishing in popularity this is not helping.

by Anonymousreply 227July 29, 2021 6:32 AM

When did Olympians become such pussies? An Olympian should be in peak physical and mental form, the best of the best. I really enjoyed the 17 year old Alaskan swimmer winning GOLD and her watch party. How exciting. Simone should go fuck off and let the other athletes shine. Men's swimming kicking ass as always.

by Anonymousreply 228July 29, 2021 6:55 AM

[quote] An Olympian should be in peak physical and mental form, the best of the best.

The pandemic, the postponement of the Olympics due to the pandemic and the changes to training methods caused by restrictions affected many athletes. I agree with the poster who wrote that mental distractions during a sport like swimming or handball isn't in the same league as not being there mentally when you're a gymnast. Other gymnasts have spoken to the press saying that they would advise not competing if a gymnast isn't mentally focused because a careless mistake could result in a serious injury or even paralysis.

by Anonymousreply 229July 29, 2021 7:04 AM

Olympians are meant to be warriors. It is about winning but it's also about never backing down and representing your country with pride.

by Anonymousreply 230July 29, 2021 7:09 AM

Better day for us today. Our guy made it to the rowing final and Viktor Hovland is playing very well in golf.

Will the country take care of a gymnast who has a fall and ends up paralysed for life?

From the linked article :

[quote] The twisties can also lead to serious injury. Former gymnast Jacoby Miles wrote on Instagram after one particularly bad bout of the twisties mid-air, she broke her neck on landing. "It only took one time of getting lost... in the air for me to break my neck and leave me paralysed, most likely for life," she wrote. "I'm so so glad [Biles] decided to not continue until she's mentally recovered."

American Pole vaulter Sam Kendricks tested positive for Coronavirus and is now out at the Olympics. He almost took out the Aussie track team too! Disappointing since he was a solid medal favorite and even more disappointing is the suspicion that he was most likely not vaccinated.

by Anonymousreply 242July 29, 2021 9:26 AM

Kendricks is an idiot deplorable.

by Anonymousreply 243July 29, 2021 9:32 AM

The Olympics used to be so entertaining. It was what people talked about for two weeks, like in 1984 (LA), 1992 (Barcelona), 1994 (Lillehammer), 1996 (Atlanta) or 2002 (Salt Lake City). Now it all seems so boring. Maybe it's because there are now so many more entertainment options. Or maybe in the U.S. it's NBC's tedious coverage, and please, NBC, drop the very tired John Williams-scored theme music recycled from the Los Angeles games in 1984 and Atlanta in 1996. And what a huge waste of money for the cities that host it. The whole thing has just become a bloated mess.

by Anonymousreply 244July 29, 2021 10:14 AM

[quote] Or maybe in the U.S. it's NBC's tedious coverage,

NBC/Comcast now has more Olympic coverage on more networks and platforms than ever before, but it's all just a big, confusing mess. Trying to find what you're looking for is a chore: Is it live or tape-delayed? Is it on NBC or CNBC or Peacock or the website or YouTube or the app? Good luck trying to find video of a specific event. I find myself searching for the video of an event, then having to sign in with my cable provider and watch several minutes of ads, only to discover it's not what I was looking for.

by Anonymousreply 245July 29, 2021 10:36 AM

I concur, R245.

I have Hulu Live (which has an Olympics hub), I pay for Peacock, I have the NBC Sports app on my TV, and I still find it impossible to watch or record the events I want to see in their entirety.

At the same time, I see an event I'm interested in scheduled for primetime coverage (like the men's gymnastics team final), I get excited, I make sure to be in front of my TV, and it's a heavily edited 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, there's like two hours of dressage or air rifling on CNBC.

This is bullshit. Everyone involved at NBC should be fired.

by Anonymousreply 246July 29, 2021 10:57 AM

Nbc has olympics till 2032 , that sucks.

I still love the Winter Olympics (Iā€™ve always thought they were more exciting), but yeah, itā€™s been a long time since I was really interested in the Summer Olympics. I think 2000 was the last time I made a point of watching every day. Now I might watch a day or two out of the entire 2 weeks.

by Anonymousreply 250July 29, 2021 11:11 AM

The women won their handball match against Montenegro. Hovland's level dropped a little and he didn't play well after the thunderstorm break.

by Anonymousreply 251July 29, 2021 11:11 AM

R250, there's soon not going to be anyplace cold enough for the Winter Olympics.

by Anonymousreply 252July 29, 2021 11:13 AM

I have loved the Olympics, winter and summer, since I was old enough to first remember them (1984).

It used to be so much more cohesive and dramatic: You would have a whole night of women's gymnastics, a whole night of men's gymnastics, a whole night of diving. Swimming and track and field were always quick races, so they would be spliced in.

But you could root along and nail-bite and compare the various nations to each otherā€”when people or teams took gold, it was clear why.

Now it's edited to all hell, stripped of context, and that diminishes the victors.

Mmeanwhile, nothing is gained. I never finished an Olympics broadcast feeling unsatisfied. This year, there's no satisfaction unless it's swimmingā€”every night, I'm like, "WTF? I'm missing something. I'm missing everything."

by Anonymousreply 253July 29, 2021 11:34 AM

"American Pole vaulter Sam Kendricks tested positive for Coronavirus and is now out at the Olympics. He almost took out the Aussie track team too! Disappointing since he was a solid medal favorite and even more disappointing is the suspicion that he was most likely not vaccinated."

Imagine working tirelessly for years with one goal in mind - Olympic gold. Then, not only going to the Olympics, but being a favorite to win. Then, getting Covid ( with no symptoms) and having your dream shattered and all of those years wasted. If it was all because he didn't get vaccinated, then more is the tragedy; the tragedy of stupidity. A hard lesson learned, but he won't be the only one whose decision will result in shattered dreams. You have the freedom to reject the vaccine, but you could suffer the consequences. Now, when his name is mentioned, a significant part of the public will react with, " What the fuck, you asshole?"

by Anonymousreply 257July 29, 2021 12:51 PM

The alternate pole vaulter has to fly in from the U.S. The teams should bring the alternates with them.

by Anonymousreply 258July 29, 2021 1:32 PM

Why is there another pole vaulter out too? Did they have an assignation?

by Anonymousreply 259July 29, 2021 1:36 PM

Negative sympathy for Kendricks if he refused the vaccine.

by Anonymousreply 260July 29, 2021 1:39 PM

R257 Agree with all of what you wrote. Honestly, I wish more unvaccinateds would go down, like that swimmer Michael Andrew.

Here in Sweden, everyone is relieved Kendricks did not get together with Mondo as originally planned. I guess he was saved by a vid call with his girlfriend.

R258 My understanding is some sport federations made their alternates stay at home out of an abundance of caution due to Tokyo covid protocols.

by Anonymousreply 261July 29, 2021 1:44 PM

NBC should get the Russians to whine on camera. Now that could make this interesting, sort of bring back the Cold War vibe from Olympic games of the past. And run a piece on state-sanctioned doping from the DDR to the Soviet Union to Putin's Russia.

by Anonymousreply 262July 29, 2021 1:46 PM

This mixed swimming shows why men are just so much faster and why women events should stay that way.

by Anonymousreply 305July 29, 2021 10:51 PM

The whole point of the mixed medley relay - a new Olympic event - is that itā€™s tactical. Two men. Two women. Anybody can swim any stroke, so the lead should change constantly which makes it entertaining.

I read that another reason for its introduction is that it allows smaller nations or those without a lot of depth to participate in the relay, which they often couldnā€™t for the 4x100, 4x200 free and 4x100 medley.

NBC had slightly better gymnastics coverage tonight which isnā€™t saying much. They actually showed most of the athletes in the top rotation on every event. Gone are the days when most of the entire night would be gymnastics interspersed with some other events. How has USA gymnastics not flipped out on NBC? Their gymnastics coverage has steadily gotten worse since the 2008 Phelps Olympics. They seemed to turn the corner hardcore towards swimming which, while interesting, is not as popular as gymnastics. Though, they are doing everything possible to kill gymnasticsā€™ popularity.

The Americans who dominate swimming are almost entirely white all-American types whereas the women's gymnastics teams have become very diverse with three consecutive AA finals won by women of color. It wouldn't surprise me at all if NBC, still stuck in a 1984 LA Games mindset, assumes that Americans (read "average white Americans") want to see white Americans dominate and don't want to watch black or Asian athletes taking over a traditionally "white" sport.

Will SAFP win the 100m gold again or will Elaine Thompson beat her? Will Shaunae Miller do the Marie-Josee Perec 200/400 double?

by Anonymousreply 330July 30, 2021 8:38 AM

I think the w100m might be too close to call. You canā€™t count Ta Lou out either.

I read yesterday that SMU confirmed she will do the 200/400 double. She is close to a lock for gold in the 400; her medaling in the 200 is iffy, but with how these Olympics have played out, you never know.

by Anonymousreply 331July 30, 2021 8:43 AM

I'm calling it now: Benjamin will win gold, Warholm silver.

by Anonymousreply 332July 30, 2021 8:51 AM

Going through the current world records in the women's track and field events, it's laughable how many records set in the 80s still remain unbroken. Nothing suspicious about it at all. No sir.

Joyner (100m, 200m), Koch (400m), Kratochvilova (800m), Soviet Union (4x400 relay), Chistiakova (Long jump), Kostadinova (High jump), Joyner Kersee (heptathlon).

The 4x100 WR set by GDR in 1985 was finally broken in 2012 by the US, but I have my doubts over whether a certain member of the US squad was indeed clean. She is a known drug cheat.

I think T&F is too far gone to recover. They should just make all PEDs legal and let athletes destroy their bodies in their pursuit of gold.

by Anonymousreply 333July 30, 2021 8:56 AM

[quote] The whole point of the mixed medley relay - a new Olympic event - is that itā€™s tactical. Two men. Two women. Anybody can swim any stroke, so the lead should change constantly which makes it entertaining.

Itā€™s Battle of the Network stars all over!! I remember Heather Locklear being pretty good at this event, but their making the mistake of placing her as the last swimmer, where she got overpowered by some actor who had been a competitive swimmer in the past.

by Anonymousreply 334July 30, 2021 9:08 AM

R333 If it is any consolation, the ā€œrealā€ w100m WR of 10.61 has the potential to fall in the next couple of days.

I've been watching the Eurosport and BBC coverage and it's much better than NBC. They clearly mark what they are going to show in the TV guide and then actually show the whole competition, with scant commercials and no cutting athletes just because they aren't US/Russian. The BBC swimming commentary was actually busy after races showing us replays with analysis of stroke quality and showing turning points in the race, with very few "How do you feel?" interviews with athletes who probably feel ... happy .... or sad, depending on what just happened.

"Sprinter Blessing Okagbare is out of the Tokyo Olympics after being suspended for failing a drugs test.

The Nigerian had won her 100m heat on Friday and was due to race in the semi-finals on Saturday.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said the 32-year-old had tested positive for a human growth hormone following an out-of-competition test on 19 July.

Okagbare, Olympic long jump silver medallist in Beijing in 2008, had posted a time of 11.05 seconds in her 100m heat and was set to line up against Asher-Smith and Jamaica's Elaine Thompson-Herath in the first semi-final.

The news comes two days after 10 other Nigerian athletes were declared ineligible for the Games.

The AIU ruled they were unable to take part because of non-compliance with out-of-competition drug testing requirements in the run-up to the Olympics."

There was a lot of criticism about the BBC to begin with but it's subsided. I tend to start watching at 7am UK time and they balance the highlights of the overnight events with ongoing events. Having every sport available to watch was nice for London and Rio but I think most people appreciate the BBC don't have unlimited funds. The people criticising them for not doing a deal would be the first to accuse the BBC of wasting money if they had outbid Eurosport/Discovery.

It's been a really nice feeling to wake up, check my phone to see what medals GB have won, then go downstairs to watch.

I echo the comments about the BBC's evenhandedness of their coverage, focusing on non British competitors. Naturally there are some British journalists who disagree. This article by Jonathan Liew was widely ridiculed. This is the same Jonathan Liew who wrote an article attacking Martina Navratilova and argued that even if trans women did dominate sport at the expense of female athletes, it would be a good thing.

Wtf is with the new mixed relay events in swimming? There are already two dozen or so events in swimming. Why do we need even more?

US track legend Michael Johnson has said he is not a fan of the mixed track relay (4x400m mixed) either and thinks it is pointless. BTW what's the gossip on Johnson? I don't recall ever hearing anything about his personal life. Straight?

by Anonymousreply 364July 31, 2021 8:13 AM

R363, writers like Liew are going to complain no matter what. If the coverage focuses on athletes from other nations there would be someone complaining that the media are ignoring the homegrown athletes, many of whom are black and from disadvantaged backgrounds, and claim that this was a typical example of the institutional racism in British sport. There is no appeasing the types who are performative victims.

If the BBC doesn't celebrate the accomplishments of Jade Jones or Dina Asher Smith, who the fuck is going to? Syrian TV? The Iranian press? The Japanese media?

Wikipedia is your friend

[quote]Johnson currently lives in Marin County, California, with his second wife Armine Shamiryan, a chef, and his son Sebastian, born in 2000 during his first marriage to entertainment reporter Kerry D'Oyen.

I like the mixed relays, if only because it highlights the disparity between elite male and female athletes. Nigeria put a man on the third leg in the 400m track relay and he powered past the women before handing over to a woman for the final lap. Naturally she was overtaken by all the men.

The 100m swimming relay was a great watch. Team GB won with a F M M F combination. USA had Caeleb Dressel on the final leg and he had a huge gap to make up. Another 20 metres and he might have done it.

His singling out of the coverage of Jade Jones was quite odd, when Lutalo Muhammad's analysis of Taekwondo has been one of the most widely praised parts of the BBC's coverage. So much so Liew's main employer The Guardian profiled him based on the praise, highlighting his analysis of Jade Jones' defeat.

Looks like Tokyo will be another bad Olympics performance by Norway. We only have two medals (one gold, one silver) and we only have three medal chances left. Several of our medal hopes have failed. The Norwegian Olympic Comittee predicted 8 medals in total. We are FAR behind that goal. It's simply not possible anymore. At least this Olympics is marginally better than Rio, just marginally. We have one gold and one silver, which trumps the four bronze from Rio. Still, I'm not happy. Oh well, it is what it is. Hopefully we'll do better in Paris.

Part of the new female-centered Olympics to demonstrate equality. What it shows, however, is how inferior women are to men when competing at the same level (except for things such as archery) and how they should remain separate.

The new Mixed-Gender events are an illustrative case of "Be careful what you wish for."

Because while the obvious conclusion to draw from observation is that women cannot compete successfully in direct physical competition with men, there is another lesson being implied, and it is currently out of favor.

That lesson is that "trans-women" will defeat women (and girls) in direct physical competition, and thus "trans-women" do not belong in women's events.

The BBC discussed the track relays with Olympic champions Denise Lewis, Michael Johnson and Jessica Ennis, who have 6 Olympic golds between them. They discussed race tactics and the order in which the runners go and the BBC host Gabby Logan made the obvious point "there's no way a woman is going to run faster than a man" and her guests agreed.

Gabby Logan is a former gymnast, the daughter of a footballer and wife of a rugby player, and she was one of many people who took issue with Jonathan Liew's "if a biological woman never wins a sporting event again it will be great" article.

Andy Murray has reiterated his support for mixed events. In addition to the track 400m mixed relay, there was the 100m swimming relay and the triathlon relay, both of which Team GB won.

by Anonymousreply 390July 31, 2021 4:32 PM

Mixed events are fair because the teams have to have the same number of women and the same number of men in them.

by Anonymousreply 391July 31, 2021 6:10 PM

Andy Murray plays a sport that's had Mixed Doubles for over a century. But two points:

Martina Navritalova was an extraordinary player in all her tennis events, including MD; a contemporary Mixed Doubles female player said she would never advise the event for a top-ranked Singles player, given the real possibility of injuries from the speed of the men's serves, e.g.

And secondly, Murray is simply Rah-Rahing for his Home Team and himself, as he co-won the MD Bronze at the 2012 London Olympics.

by Anonymousreply 392July 31, 2021 6:13 PM

R381, are Fraser Pryce and Jackson running the 200? It'll be funny if Fraser Pryce scores a revenge win in the 200 final.

I was rooting for Marie-JosƩe Ta Lou to win the final today. I would love it if she somehow pulled off a major upset and won the 200.

I think the reason they added mixed events is to make things more fun and interesting. They need different strategy too - it was fascinating to watch the American coaches fuck up the strategy in the swimming event because they put a female breaststroker on the team which is madness when Peaty was 8 seconds faster than her. All of the swimming fans couldn't believe it, can the US coaches not even do simple mathematical adding up of times?

r396, even Caeleb Dressel can't make up that kind of gap. Every single other team put a man on the breast stroke leg and a woman on the freestyle leg because the biggest time differential between men and women is in the breast, and the smallest time differential is in freestyle. That's basic mixed relay strategy and if you add up people's best times on paper it makes logical sense. I don't know what the US coaches were thinking but it's why they didn't even medal in that event. And they do have decent male breast stroke swimmers so I don't know what they were thinking. Someone suggested that maybe they declined but 2 or 3 declining seems highly unlikely.

The BBC covered the story of Cyrille Tchatchet, a 25 year old originally from Cameroon.

He came to the UK in 2014 for the Commonwealth Games and sought refugee status, initially living on the streets because he didn't want to go back to Cameroon because he was fearful for his life.

After attempting suicide he was taken to a mental health unit and recovered. He's since qualified as a mental health nurse and is representing the Refugee Olympic Team.

On the subject of "mixed" events, when Tom Daley was being interviewed on the BBC the other day, he said something about discussion about mixed events in synchronized diving. .. I recalled that I saw something like that at the FINA world championships a few years ago. I can't recall if it was actual competition or just some kind of demonstration event. Anyway, I remember it looking kind of odd, since the symmetry of the dives was off due to the difference in body shapes/heights, and of course, the swimsuits that the two divers were wearing .. lol!

by Anonymousreply 405July 31, 2021 8:29 PM

They should introduce a diving relay.

Each team has 4 divers. The first diver dives with the baton then has to swim over to the 2nd diver waiting at the side of the pool to hand them the baton. 2nd diver then has to run a lap of the pool to hand baton to 3rd diver at bottom of stairs to the board. 3rd diver then passes to 4th diver who dives and then swims over to 1st diver waiting at the side of the pool who then run a lap of the pool and pass it to 2nd diver at bottom of stairs...

A points scheme will be worked out to balance speed of the relay against diving scores and effective penalties for baton drops, concussions and dick slips.

I watched the men's singles final in table tennis and thought it was a great match. Table tennis has been quite boring since 1996 due to the overwhelming dominance of China. The decision to restrict each nation to just two singles players at the Olympics allowed other nations a chance to at least compete for the bronze but the top two seeds from China played a very good final.

R393 Jackson and SAFP are scheduled to run the 200, as is Ta Lou! I already created a JAM sweep scenario, but now, I just donā€™t see it. I think Gabby Thomas will carry her Olympic Trials form, so that is one spot. And I think with a fast track and other fast runners, we will see something special from SMU. Elaine looked so good during the last phase of the 100m race, I feel like she is a lock for the podium in 200m. I downvoted Shericka Jackson because her top end speed was not as fast as I was anticipating. The way that Elaine ran down SAFP makes me think she is not running down Gabby or SMU either, plus 200 is her weaker event.

Also, Jenna Prandini could be in the mix and though she is far from her 2015 form, if Schippers manages her rounds, she could be in the hunt too.

Basically, the w200m final is going to be stacked and going to be fast.

For T&F fans tomorrow - Rojas will most certainly be on a mission to break the WR in the womenā€™s triple jump; Andre de Grasse in the 100; a monster 400mh semi-final featuring Warholm vs Benjamin - this could be another potential WR.

by Anonymousreply 415July 31, 2021 10:03 PM

R91: Well, Jalen Rose was all alone on that stupid "hot-take" island. I'm a bit of an NBA junkie, so I watch (or listen to) most of those shows like Get Up, First Take, Undisputed, The Jump, etc.

Some in the Twitterverse may have agreed with him, but all of the other African-American commentators I heard speak about it were like, "WTF is he talking about??" They denounced his comments, pointing out that the four of the last five Olympic squads have been comprised entirely of black players. The one exception: 2012, when Kevin Love was on the team (and lead them in rebounding)

They also felt it was incredibly disrespectful to Love who -- despite recent struggles with his game & injuries -- is still a 5x NBA All-Star, 2x All-NBA Second Team, 2016 NBA Champion, and 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist.* If he received any "special" consideration, it wasn't due to his skin-color (Pop wouldn't stand for that). It was due to his resume & previous international experience (he was also on the 2010 FIBA gold-medal team).

Rose's "apology" was a joke. He apologized to "the game" and to the "greats" in his life (like his late-mother) or some such nonsense. No mention of Kevin Love, who was just minding his own business, playing basketball.

*Meanwhile, Jalen's most notable career achievements: All-Rookie Second Team & Most Improved Player. Twenty years from now, he'll be remembered for his hairline & being part of the Greatest NCAA Finals Choke-Job ever.

R422 Because sheā€™s not under competition. Thatā€™s one of the reasons why I expect her to be the Gala. Although I am hoping she might enter the floor competition. That is her realm and since there is a high chance sheā€™s retiring after this and the tour she mine as well give one final competitive performance if sheā€™s up for it.

Amazing gold medal for Charlotte Worthington in the BMX freestyle.

R430, handball is more exciting than soccer, which is endless passing with little or no scoring for 90 plus minutes. If anything, get rid of soccer.

I attended an Olympic handball match in London.

R434, handball is fun to watch, I agree.

Raven Saunders is openly lesbian and one of us. Congratulations to her on winning the silver. Valerie Adams of NZ was going for a third gold medal in the shot put, but just like SAFP in the 100m, couldn't get a third win.

China is doing very well in the games and leading the medals race so far. Yeah I know that the US reports look at the total medals won putting the US on top, but I prefer the table based on golds.

by Anonymousreply 459August 1, 2021 2:43 PM

There were not a lot of stuck landings in gymnastics. A lot of out of bounds on floor. The men were far worse than women.

Someone on the Simone thread is trying to make going out of bounds about Simone trying to diminish her accomplishments. Many have gone out of bounds including little Nikita from Russia. They said this floor is very bouncy so you shouldnā€™t penalize athletes for doing very difficult routines while going out of bounds (back in the day it would have took you out of contention) when it could be the apparatus.

by Anonymousreply 466August 1, 2021 4:47 PM

R465 Barshim and Tamberi are really good friends. Considering the injuries both have been plagued with over the last few years and their friendship, Iā€™m not surprised they agreed to share gold.

The 8 skaters qualifying got scores ranging from 15.77 to 11.77. Alana Smith (they/them) scored 1.25, behind 19th placed Canadian Anna Guglia who scored 3.35.

Not only was Smith humiliated in the event, they/them was also humiliated by countless commentators who referred to they/them as she/her.

Those Chinese women gymnasts will ā€œfallā€ out some windows when they return. Am I wrong?

by Anonymousreply 474August 1, 2021 6:43 PM

Someone posted in one of the Simone Biles threads that the Chinese team is still clinging to the old ideas about what a female gymnast's body shape should be like which has hurt them in an era of power tumbling where the most successful gymnasts are all built like powerful linebackers.

by Anonymousreply 475August 1, 2021 7:09 PM

R475, I recently watched 'Athlete A' which commentated that gymnasts used to be fully matured women but that the KƔrolyis introduced much younger women as gymnasts which was successful, and I recall that in 2008 there was a ton of talk about the Chinese lying about how old their gymnasts were.... Young appears to be considered better in gymnastics.

Woooow. They are showing gymnastics during the day right now not in primetime. If I was a kid and this was my first gymnastics I would not think it was a marquee event. I bet when all is said and done, if you add up airtime for track, swimming and gymnastics, track and swimming will have hours over gymnastics.

Iā€™ve never seen such skimpy coverage for gymnastics.

by Anonymousreply 479August 1, 2021 9:47 PM

Simone could compete floor, but would not be competitive. At best she could perform the Biles I, double layout, double pike, double tuck for her passes assuming her air sense issues could handle the half twist on the Biles. There is little hope that sheā€™d medal with such a watered down routine.

On beam, she can add difficulty to the set while downgrading the dismount to a double pike. She could be competitive without twisting elements. Sheā€™s likely working with coaches to see what they can cobble together before withdrawing.

by Anonymousreply 480August 1, 2021 9:58 PM

I am tired of hearing about Biles and her "decisions." Go away and let a teammate experience the Olympics.

by Anonymousreply 481August 1, 2021 10:33 PM

Ironic that, when asked about Bilesā€™ withdrawal, tennis player Novak Djokovic replied ā€œPressure is privilegeā€¦you better start learning how to deal with pressureā€¦ā€

Two days later, he loses his cool, throws his racket over the spectator stands, breaks another, throws it at photographers, faked an injury and withdraws from the bronze medal mixed match. Guess he couldnā€™t handle the pressure

by Anonymousreply 482August 1, 2021 10:46 PM

NBC couldnā€™t bother to show the bronze medalist in vault but sure asf showed both non medaling Russians! All not in primetime. I guess so they can so all the billions of track heats. I like seeing other sports but gymnastics is the most popular yet it has been treated as a Z list sport. On vault, which is super fast, they couldnā€™t even show all 8 finalists. Theyā€™ll show 5 beam routines tops (both Russians, of course).

by Anonymousreply 483August 2, 2021 12:13 AM

It looks as though it was to be repeated later in the day so Iā€™m not sure what the problem is. Or would you rather that the gymnastics finals are rescheduled to accommodate US audiences, the way that the swimming finals were?

To the detriment of the swimmers.

by Anonymousreply 487August 2, 2021 12:42 AM

R487 none of them should be scheduled to accommodate any audience. Itā€™s impossible to watch all events live but they sacrifice other events, like gymnastics, to show other events live.

There was one weird bit in the men's individual final for pommel horse. The American gymnast Alec Yoder, who went on either second or third, was initially in second position. As the other gymnasts performed and scored higher, he started to drop in the standings and eventually finished sixth.

The weird bit was when an older male American team member (a coach or a manager or someone like that) looked like he was consoling him by putting his arms around him, feeling his nipple and pinching it. Did I imagine that or did anyone else notice it too?

by Anonymousreply 507August 2, 2021 6:16 AM

Sifan Hassan of NED is inspiring - fell & ultimately won in 1500 qualifying, and then wins gold in final

Inspiring? I mean, sheā€™s so clearly on drugs itā€™s not funny. Time will tell. But inspiring not so much. Eye rolling perhaps. šŸ™„šŸ˜•šŸ˜’

by Anonymousreply 536August 2, 2021 2:52 PM

I just watched the replay of USA women's volleyball being bitch slapped by the ROC. I hope JT is back for the QFs. ROC looked good without her but the team was embarrassed after she was injured. ROC women just are too good on that block. DAMN. They cannot win gold.

[quote]Sifan Hassan of NED is inspiring - fell & ultimately won in 1500 qualifying, and then wins gold in final

Even more amazing is that she fell in the 1500m heats and still qualified on Monday and then won gold in the 5000m today (Tuesday).

She's competing in the 1500m, 5000m and 10000m

She runs in the 1500m semi final tomorrow (Wednesday), the final is on Friday, and then the 10000m final is on Saturday.

by Anonymousreply 538August 2, 2021 2:52 PM

I was glad to see Sifan Hassan win, but talk about a gift she got from the lead pack! I thought they would take it out fast to ensure Hassan had to burn a lot of energy, but they turned it into a kickerā€™s race which worked to her advantage.

Regarding the Womenā€™s 200m - I have to change my predictions and have no idea other than Elaine Thompson for gold. It is a toss up between Gabby Thomas, SAFP, SMU and Mboma for the other medals.

Both menā€™s 400m races, flat and hurdles, should be fire. Mondo is a lock for pole vault gold.

by Anonymousreply 539August 2, 2021 3:38 PM

Canada beat the US women in football - Sweden beat Australia's Matildas.

Seems weird but I don't follow it too closely so maybe not unexpected.

Go North America!! I guess...

Good for Jade. The men on FX donā€™t do any choreography or other ballet shit so why should the women? I know some of you older viewers loved it but this is a sport. If the men donā€™t have to do it the women shouldnā€™t either. Jade won because she does insanely difficult routines. End of story. Donā€™t hate-masterbate.

So IF Biles medals on beam, she would tie Shannon Miller as most decorated female gymnast for the US. Thatā€™s the best she can do and I think that is why she is doing this. It is also the biggest tell she is retiring after Tokyo.

I was joking about Nassar being the menā€™s physician obviously but that squeeze of Alecā€™s nipple was odd. Iā€™d like to squeeze many things on Alec.

by Anonymousreply 541August 2, 2021 4:13 PM

Men should have to exhibit artistry in the floor exercise, just like they have to do in figure skating.

by Anonymousreply 542August 2, 2021 4:25 PM

R542 They donā€™t and never have so that ship sailed. Women did because they were women. Some of you may like it but this should be about measurable skills. I know this sucks for those who love the Eastern whores.

by Anonymousreply 543August 2, 2021 4:30 PM

Do the men and women actually get scored for the strike a pose segments or is it just the jumps, spins and somersaults they get scored for?

by Anonymousreply 544August 2, 2021 4:32 PM

The BBC just covered the women's hockey semi final where Team GB beat Spain on penalties to get to the semi finals. Team GB are the defending champions.

Jason Mohamed is the main host for the later afternoon review show and joining him in the studio was Kate Richardson-Walsh, who captained the team to the gold medal. She's married to Kate Richardson-Walsh who was in the Rio gold medal winning team and both have since retired and have had a baby.

They interviewed the mother of Leah Wilkinson, the most capped GB Hockey player, but also the most capped Welsh player in ANYTHING. Leah's mother talked about how proud of her daughter she is, how her daughter has balanced her teaching job and hockey career and how stressful it was to watch and that she didn't know Leah's girlfriend Sarah Jones was talking one of the penalties. Leah's mum had spoken to Sarah's mum about how stressful it was to watch.

That's how normal being gay is in Britain right now. Just matter of fact.

I hope everyone around the world will be cheering on the GB Hockey Lesbians.

Caeleb Dressel was miserable during Olympic dominance

American swimmer Caeleb Dressel, fresh off a record-tying Olympic performance in which he captured gold medals in each of his five races, told reporters that he is ā€œpretty over swimmingā€ following his final win on Sunday.

ā€œThis is not easy, not an easy week at all,ā€ Dressel said. ā€œSome parts were extremely enjoyable. I would say the majority of them were not. You canā€™t sleep right, you canā€™t nap, shaking all the time. I probably lost 10 pounds. Iā€™m going to weigh myself and eat some food when I get back. Itā€™s a lot of stress we put on the body.ā€

Although Dressel has taken to journaling in order to better cope with his emotions, the Olympics left him too drained to write.

ā€œI am pretty good at putting a face on,ā€ Dressel said. ā€œI knew that weight was on my shoulders. (But) pressure is fine. It is when you turn it into stress, that is when it becomes a problem.ā€

Mental health has become an increasingly pertinent subject during the Tokyo Olympics. Dresselā€™s remarks come in the wake of Simone Bilesā€™ decision to withdraw from several Olympic events over her own mental health concerns.

Despite the toll on his health, Dressel acknowledged that he has no regrets about participating.

ā€œItā€™s not the most enjoyable process, but it is worth it,ā€ Dressel said. ā€œEvery part of it is worth it. Just cause itā€™s bad doesnā€™t mean itā€™s not worth it.ā€

Erica Sullivan who took silver behind Ledecky in the 1500m might be the first out US swimming team member whilst still competing. It's almost always the women rather than the men who feel ok coming out.

by Anonymousreply 547August 2, 2021 5:31 PM

OMG, both kayaking and canoeing are fantastic!

by Anonymousreply 548August 2, 2021 5:48 PM

[quote] Men should have to exhibit artistry in the floor exercise, just like they have to do in figure skating.

The women's floor has no artistry either. Jump, jump, jump, embarrassing swishing of arms, jump

by Anonymousreply 549August 2, 2021 5:56 PM

R549, I thought the gymnast from Brazil was very graceful. But she kinda looks like a man.

by Anonymousreply 550August 2, 2021 6:00 PM

R549 OH WELL, itā€™s about athleticism not being a ballerina

by Anonymousreply 551August 2, 2021 6:11 PM

Sorry to see the US Mens Volleyball team go out -- there was some fine eye candy on that team. But the Argentine team was decidedly better, as the US seems to have largely forgotten how to serve the ball.

by Anonymousreply 552August 2, 2021 6:36 PM

Very glad to see the US women lose at soccer. They are insufferable. Hope they lose the bronze medal match as well.

by Anonymousreply 553August 2, 2021 6:59 PM

I thought Rebeca Andrade was very pretty and had a lovely smile. What sort of men are you lot coming across that you think she looks like a man? Or is the usual DL brand of bigot who suggests that all black women look masculine?

by Anonymousreply 557August 2, 2021 7:19 PM

Female gymnasts who barrel through a routine with brute force should be penalized if they donā€™t show sufficient artistry and passion.

by Anonymousreply 558August 2, 2021 7:26 PM

R558 Yet the men can. Artistry was forced on women. They donā€™t need it now.

by Anonymousreply 559August 2, 2021 7:34 PM

Itā€™s important that women gymnasts show both athleticism and artistry.

by Anonymousreply 560August 2, 2021 7:36 PM

R560 To you, not me.

by Anonymousreply 561August 2, 2021 7:38 PM

The NBC commentator's non-stop mention of Tyler Downs tik-tok was hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 567August 2, 2021 11:24 PM

R530, frankly I would cop a feel of Alec Yoder, too. Stud

by Anonymousreply 568August 2, 2021 11:44 PM

Even they can acknowledge that Tyler is hot as hell.

by Anonymousreply 569August 3, 2021 12:00 AM

I dont know what Gabby Thomasā€™ chances are but that woman is gorgeous running with her long wig and false lashes. She is marketable.

Biles is not the favorite for beam, the tiny chinese girls are, but their nerves have been pretty bad. Suni Lee also had higher scores than Biles did in qualification. These ladies though, you would think they would know enough and have been told to get off social media, after working so hard for the past 4 years yet they allow themselves to get distracted on tiktok, twitter and instagram. I follow them on insta and theyve been posting nonstop. They complain about haters, when the media is sucking their dick 24/7, just because some random troll said something bad about them. How the team allowed Suni to do interview after interview when she wasnt done competing yet. She is normally focused but did her worst bars routine and somehow medalled.

by Anonymousreply 570August 3, 2021 12:06 AM

Tyler and Andrew are cute.

Alec Yoder and Shane Wiskus- spit roast me. Throw in Sam Maculak. Ryan Murphy? Yes, please.

by Anonymousreply 571August 3, 2021 12:09 AM

Woke up to a new gold. Warholm is just incredible.

by Anonymousreply 572August 3, 2021 3:56 AM

I read a few minutes ago that Warholm had won the 400 hurdles gold and shattered the WR. My first reaction was to think, "Norwegian on DL must be thrilled!"

Congratulations, Norwegian.

by Anonymousreply 577August 3, 2021 5:33 AM

Fantastic for Karsten Warholm. He has the perfect mixture of self belief, pride and confidence. He knows he's the best.

Two amazing close sailing results for Team GB today resulting in two more golds. I never knew boats could be so exciting. GB have won the finn race at every Olympics since 2000.

Team GB now has more golds than those dirty cheating Russians.

by Anonymousreply 578August 3, 2021 6:10 AM

Tom Daley watching the diving and he's brought his knitting with him.

by Anonymousreply 579August 3, 2021 6:21 AM

Leon Taylor (silver medallist in 2004) is commentating on the diving for the BBC and is making no effort to fluff up poor performances.

"He's having a nightmare", he says of Andrew Capobianco's latest effort.

When Jack Laugher and Daniel Goodfellow were diving in the pairs last week he limited his commentary to "no".

by Anonymousreply 580August 3, 2021 6:43 AM

Is Colin Jackson hinting that Warholm's WR might have been the result of, er, illegal methods? He compared it to Usain Bolt's and Flo Jo's WR times. Bolt is assumed to have been clean but doesn't pretty much everyone assume that Flo Jo was a drug cheat?

by Anonymousreply 581August 3, 2021 6:49 AM

Leon Taylor is very pleased with Jack Laugher. "Tremendous, an absolute corker, he is coming away with a medal".

by Anonymousreply 582August 3, 2021 7:01 AM

I remember now that Leon was the diver with the bad hair at Athens.

by Anonymousreply 583August 3, 2021 7:08 AM

Leon Taylor not happy with the New Zealand diver's "backside poking out" but "he's only 21 and it's his first Olympics"

by Anonymousreply 584August 3, 2021 7:11 AM

I wonder how Boudia would have done had he made the team. He would have more confidence than Downs and Capobianco.

by Anonymousreply 585August 3, 2021 7:11 AM

So glad swimming is done. NBC tried real hard to make the big dull dyke Katie Ladecky and veneer crybaby Gaeleb Dressler happen but they are just too fucking boring.

by Anonymousreply 586August 3, 2021 7:15 AM

The Danish cyclist should be disqualified for his behaviour in the velodrome.

Not necessarily for the accident but for his reaction and shouting at the Team GB cyclist, who was a last minute replacement for Ed Clancy, who was going for his 4th consecutive gold in the Team Pursuit but was injured ahead of the race and has now retired from cycling.

I never would have imagined someone could run 46.17 and LOSE a 400m hurdle race. Warholmā€™s 45.94 is other-otherworldly. One of the all-time great Athletics performances.

Norwegian - I know it has been an underwhelming Olympics for Norway. What Warholm did, it has to erase all of the disappointment!

by Anonymousreply 589August 3, 2021 11:22 AM

The Olympic hosts have said this is the fastest running track they've ever used, which explains some of the performances.

Not that takes anything away from Warholm.

by Anonymousreply 590August 3, 2021 11:29 AM

Our men's handball team crashed out to Denmark. They will beat us at medals this year. Both Sweden and Denmark will. We will be worst in Scandinavia. It has been a very disappointing Olympics for us. We have four 4th places. And some of our medal hopes have not performed well at all. Like men's handball. I truly believe they could have won a medal if they played their best. They played like shit hence the QF exit. Denmark fully deserved to win. Now we only have two medal chances left. It's not looking good. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled with Warholm's gold, but Norway is still underperforming.

by Anonymousreply 591August 3, 2021 11:40 AM

R590, most major tracks are getting faster, it is just part of the evolution of the sport. The World Championship meet next year is going to be fun. The oval in Eugene will probably be faster than this one in Tokyo.

Understood Norwegian/r591.

by Anonymousreply 592August 3, 2021 11:50 AM

Team GB has now overtaken the Lyin Dopin Cheatin Rule Breakin Russians on the medal table and are now 5th with just one more gold needed to overtake our Australian cousins.

Looks unlikely that Team GB will overtake Japan on golds but I'm happy for the host nation to do so well.

For the second tier European nations, Germany have inched ahead of France, Italy and Netherlands.

China and the US have the same number of medals but China have 10 more golds than the US.

by Anonymousreply 593August 3, 2021 12:18 PM

Athing Mu is incredible. 800m Olympic champion and still a teenager.

6 of the 8 finalists got personal bests.

by Anonymousreply 594August 3, 2021 12:30 PM

I didn't realise Keeley Hodginson is still a teenager as well. She got silver medal, ran a personal best and beat Kelly Holmes' 25 year old British record.

Amazing achievement.

by Anonymousreply 595August 3, 2021 12:36 PM

Looks like there is going to be a nice US/Brit rivalry over the next few years in the womenā€™s 800m! I am so excited to see how fast Mu will run over the next few years.
