I feel like the incel thing is, in large part, young guys -- a large amount of whom are of Asian/Indian/Arab descent -- who have no idea how to talk to girls to get them to date them and sleep with them. Most of them I think just kind of deal with it and accept feeling invisible. When they find a safe space online (typically a forum geared towards them), they express their true feelings and when they encounter someone from the Manosphere giving critique of women, they glom on to their content.

I feel like those young men need a pep talk, but I try not to cast aspersions. When you're a man, you're kind of expected to figure it out or suck it up and deal with it. But you don't get to be candid about your feelings and court a ton of sympathy.

There's another group of incels that I do worry about as a societal threat. I've noticed these tend to be largely young white men who also feel invisible and don't have the social skills to interact with women. There are usually a few obvious differences with these guys. Like I said, one, they tend to be white (I'll explain why that matters in a second). They also tend to have this almost delusional sense of entitlement...like they're owed a woman. They tend to have an inflated sense of themselves despite not having "Chad" good-looks. They think they're wonderful guys who are being passed over by women. And really, I think that need to be "seen" combined with feeling looked over by women is what fuels a lot of their anger and resentment towards women. And I think that's what drives them to these acts of violence. The chance for notoriety and being able to force society to, for a time, see you.

The reason why these are largely white guys, IMO, is because of their surroundings. Young men of color, from certain ethnic and/or religious backgrounds, might suffer from feelings of being invisible to women in a broader social context, but they are likely surrounded by other men in their same predicament. They're not constantly forced to compare themselves to people in their proximity who are excelling with women in the ways they aren't. With a lot of white incels, they usually have a few guys in their lives who are exceeding with women (an older or younger, better looking brother; star on the sports team; a childhood friend who girls really like) and girls who use them as an emotional sponge. These are your "male girlfriends" who girls will go to to complain about the guys they actually date. And of course there's always the possibility of the underlying, unaddressed mental health problems a lot of men have.

But I actually think that's why guys like that start to go a little crazy. Because on one hand, they're too earnest, too self-righteous, too self-conscious, too anxious to actually develop the social skills needed to have a social life (even later in life). They figure it all comes down to looks (which is why so many of them get obsessed with their bodies). But then they have Becky/Hannah/Sarah/Kate coming to them complaining about guys lying to them, cheating on them, hurting their feelings, and thinking, "I'd never do that", and they here women complain about not being able to find a nice guy or a good guy all the while ignoring the guys they Friendzone or blow off for the guys who treat them the same way.

Incels have always existed but they didn't have a name, organisation or a philosophy. The Internet allowed the development of these things.

The vast and overwhelming majority of these men don't kill or rape. The ones who kill or rape don't deserve any sympathy, and let's be clear that no one is owed sex. But that doesn't mean people who are too unattractive or socially awkward to get laid should be written off and mocked. They are suffering in their loneliness and society will benefit from reaching out to them. Especially as social trends mean their numbers are apparently significantly growing.

I guess it's okay to point out that there aren't women committing acts of mass violence, but I don't really think that's a feather in their cap.
