Raleigh (and Durham and Chapel Hill) are too short on old houses and old neighborhoods (early 20thC and before, not those 1940s-1970s brick Cape Cods for $750k.) Those that turn up are not bargains except maybe by West Coast measures.
This is maybe the nicest old house I found listed, good proportions, nice spaces, an interesting and attractive house, and we'll located it seems. But it's $755k for 2300 SQ.ft. and most people would want to paint the exterior, renovate the kitchen and maybe the bath -- the one bathroom -- and create some patio areas among the paths in the garden. That and an extra bath pushes it up another $100k without doing anything extravagant, just a new bath and various improvements.
A lot of money in my mind to have a modestly sized house in a city that might score well on paper but doesn't exactly stirs passions.
