Boston Globe:
Facing a surge of new COVID-19 cases since the July Fourth holiday weekend, Provincetown officials plan to hold an emergency meeting late Sunday afternoon to discuss actions needed to contain the diseaseโs spread.
Provincetown officials imposed an indoor-mask wearing advisory early last week after reporting what health officials are calling a cluster, which has grown to include 430 cases as of Friday.

Don't know about Fire Island, R42, but part of the allure of Ptown was that accommodations could be had at any price point, low, medium and high.
The perfect example of this was the Best Western Chateau, located on a hilltop on the outskirts of town. Reasonably priced but comfortable rooms. And CLEAN. You could eat off the pool deck and side walks, that's how clean the Gordon family, the original owners, kept the property.
Now, everything there, including restaurants, has been gentrified. I have yet to see anything spa-like about the Sea Glass Inn that would justify these ridiculous prices. .

I was in town for two weeks in July. My friends and I are negative and vaccinated. We did dinners and beach. We did NOT suck 50 dicks in the dunes, the dick dock and after hours parties. The people who complained about being positive were the same people, the week before, who were bragging about how much sex and how many partners they had the week before. Now, they are blaming the town. BTW they have all recovered. I am sure the numbers will go down to 2 this week, now that everyone knows what anonymous group sex gets you in 2021.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | July 25, 2021 11:27 PM |
Ptown is not affordable. It's a great town and gay getaway, but the prices to stay anywhere are atrocious. And this is not because of Covid. It has happened for many years now. And so many places require a four- , five- and six-night minimum stay. It's very difficult for Bostonians to visit Ptown for a one- or two-night weekend stay. But regardless, the prices are insane and insulting.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | July 25, 2021 11:30 PM |
Orleans, MA, in the "middle" area of the Cape, is much more affordable. I stayed in a basic, old school motel and it was very nice. Good Thai restaurant in town. I made day trips (by car) to Chatham, Wellfleet, and Ptown. I found Ptown to be too crowded, too congested (tiny, narrow streets), and too poor value. I don't "party" and I don't do random hookups, so I'm glad I stayed in a nicer part of the Cape.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | July 25, 2021 11:56 PM |
Fuck no! I'm going in about six weeks, but not PTown. Wellfleet. And I'm not leaving the fucking house except for takeout and the emptiest beach I can find.

Provincetown is too popular for its own good. It's expensive because there is a steady supply of people going who will pay those rates.

by Anonymous | reply 55 | July 26, 2021 12:49 AM |
Iโm in PTown this week. Itโs not a busy as it usually is but definitely much better than last year.
Hardly anyone is wearing masks outdoor and, even with the indoor mask mandate, there are still a few not wearing masks indoors. I assume July 4 and Bear Weeks were the busiest. Photos show gays shoulder to shoulder at the Boat Slipโnot a mask in sight. Donโt know if the other weeks are that crowded. Carnival Week maybe. This is the first time Iโm seeing tons of vacancy signs at B&Bs and, oddly, way more straight people than Iโve seen before.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | July 26, 2021 3:23 AM |
It makes a kind of depressing sense.
Delta is so much more transmissible. From NPR: "On average, people infected with the delta variant had about 1,000 times more copies of the virus in their respiratory tracts than those infected with the original strain of the coronavirus, the study reported. In addition, after someone catches the delta variant, the person likely becomes infectious sooner. On average, it took about four days for the delta variant to reach detectable levels inside a person, compared with six days for the original coronavirus variant."
So even if everybody is vaccinated there's only so much the vaccines can do against Delta so it is inevitable, in a highly vaccinated crowd, there are infections. But generally the reporting says mild. But if an infected person is blowing out 1000x more virus and you're standing around in a dense crowd shouting at one another for an hour or ten, Delta gonna Delta.
I'd almost venture you're safer on your knees blowing a guy than standing up talking to him - and for Chrissakes, if ever there was a summer to be fucked without a kiss....

by Anonymous | reply 75 | July 27, 2021 6:19 PM |
R71, yes, the thought is circumstances have changed so CDC changed its guidance.
No one can foretell the future, not even the CDC. As the situation evolves, so do CDC pronouncements.
We donโt know what will happen tomorrow with Covid so itโs stupid to demand that CDC keep todayโs guidance if things change tomorrow.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | July 28, 2021 2:57 AM |
R72, no, I havenโt received anything convincing at all. The CDC has been correct, responding to fluctuations.
Do you really want the CDC to stick to one guidance no matter how Covid evolves? Science doesnโt work like that
by Anonymous | reply 77 | July 28, 2021 2:59 AM |
I want the CDC to allow science to guide them, not pressure to restore the economy.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | July 28, 2021 3:20 AM |
And the science at the time was that those who had taken the vaccine could unmask.
And now thereโs a variant for which the vaccine may not be as effective. Time to remask, likely.
CDC is following the science

Now 860 cases have been linked to the Provincetown cluster.
The CDC says that its recent guidance to mask indoors in high risk places was partially based on what seemed to have happened in PTownโvaccinated people were infected with Covid (sometimes asymptomatically) and giving it to other vaccinated people.
Sweetheart, give it up. You're wrong. The Delta was around AND in the US before the CDC made their proclamation. The CDC fucked up and so did you.
The CDC doesnโt just offer guidance for the fun of it. It waits until the studies are done and verified and THEN it gives the guidance. So, although the Delta variant has been here for a while, the CDC watches and studies how it reacts. The CDC only just concluded that it affects the vaccinated and spreads as easily as chicken pox and only now has made its recommendation to mask up in active areas.
Science takes time.
Apparently 74% of those infected were fully vaccinated. Jesus. This surge is going to be terrible
And virtually none of them had anything more than mild symptoms. Meanwhile, it was Bear Week in Provincetown - hundreds or thousands of guys having sex all week - pretty ideal conditions for transmission. Plus, the outbreak has now fizzled out (per the mayor) and has not spread regionally (compare that to the Sturges event in South Dakota last year where the entire upper Midwest saw a huge surge in cases for weeks afterward).
The vaccines work. Provincetown is not a typical scenario and the media has been pretty irresponsible in how it's portrayed the whole thing (the "spreads as easily as chicken pox" thing is especially misleading and not what the CDC says).

Yes, and what percentage of people in attendance during that same time frame didnโt get infected at all?
You do realize, I hope, that the more people in a particular population get vaccinated, the greater the number of positive cases will be among vaccinated people, right? This virus could still be circulating even if we got to a 100% vaccination rate. And guess what, 100% of the positive cases in that scenario would be among vaccinated people.
Please try to grasp this very simple concept.

Still, if I have sex with a guy who has the measles, Iโm still not going to get it because of the vaccine.
So the vaccines arenโt full proof but are still very effective to against severe disease. Vaccinated people can still carry and spread the delta variant.

The people who are vaccinated and who get Covid very very rarely ever become very sick. All of the people that got Covid during the 4th of July in Ptown were vaccinated and only have cold like symptoms. But people who are vaccinated and get Covid can pass it on to unvaccinated people.

The positive numbers in Provincetown are way down. That will never be reported in the news though. They basically write off the town for the summer and don't report the good news and good behavior.

I donโt mind the stupid deplorables who are unvaccinated getting Covid and croaking. I just donโt want to give it to kids who canโt get vaccinated yet.
But after the kids are vaccinated by the end of this year (hopefully), the masking ends

The problem was most of those positives took Covid elsewhere as most affected were tourists. 900 are now connected to that outbreak

This town had been doing everything right for 2 years . The "Tourists" brought it with them.. (Possibly) unvaccinated from Texas and the south. It wasn't intentional, it's just the way it happened. And people were reckless for two weeks . Everyone back to behaving and the numbers show it.

There are people called epidemiologists and public health experts (have you heard of them?) who interview everyone involved in an outbreak such as this one, who contact the people they were in contact with, who tally up their symptoms. How do you think we know how many people were involved in this?

If the CDC is reexamining its take and guidance on Delta-variant Covid infection and spread based on Provincetown-originating outbreaks, including vaccinated people's "breakthrough" ones, I think a little critical thinking is in order before pushing for the general population in so-called uptick areas to start needing to increase mask mandates and wearing indoors, etc., given that the Ptown upticks likely were first centered on a summer holiday weekend in a relatively small, densely packed tourist town where throngs of people crammed into places packed like sardines and interacting physically quite a lot. Not everywhere is that happening, and so to base increasingly restricted mask mandates again on the Ptown-originated infections' particular setup dynamics seems prematurely too cautious and not enough fully thought out to me.

All joking aside, P-town is a good community in a very vaccinated state. Good contact tracing. It seems like they got enough of a grip on the outbreak that friends of mine could visit a week or so as if the covid cluster didn't happen. Granted this is a mixed gay/straight group and tea dance isn't on their agenda.
Is tea still on? It's looking subdued on Instagram.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | August 1, 2021 5:02 AM |
R166, I'm actually starting to think that the CDC is just using this as an excuse to reverse the policy. It gives them cover to fix their original mistake and no one is questioning it because then they'll have to explain that everyone there basically got Covid at an orgy.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | August 1, 2021 5:36 AM |

I laughed out loud at this bit in the NYT this morning: "By the end of the week, Mr. Katsurinis was taking reports of positive coronavirus cases โ all gay men, with an average age of 30 to 35, many of whom had seen a doctor for other reasons, like flu symptoms [italic]or sexually transmitted infections, [/italic]not suspecting the coronavirus."

also from NYT: At least 233 staff members at two major San Francisco hospitals, most of them fully vaccinated, tested positive for the coronavirus this month, and most, according to a hospital official, involved the highly contagious Delta variant.
Some of the cases were asymptomatic, most involved mild to moderate symptoms and only two required hospitalization, officials said. The infections were determined to be Delta-related because most samples in San Francisco were tested for the variant, which is now dominant in the city.
About 75 to 80 percent of the more than 50 staff members infected at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital were fully vaccinated, Dr. Lukejohn Day, the hospitalโs chief medical officer, said in an interview on Saturday. The University of California, San Francisco Medical Center said in a statement issued on Friday that 153 of its 183 infected staff members had been fully vaccinated.
The statement from the U.C.S.F. Medical Center said that two of the infected staff members required hospitalization. None of the infected staff members at San Francisco General have been hospitalized and most had mild to moderate symptoms, Dr. Day said. The asymptomatic cases were discovered through contact tracing.
Without vaccinations, Dr. Day said, the hospitalization rate would be much worse.

Well, I never stopped wearing a mask when in public. This summer, I've been to two gatherings: 4th of July, about 30 people at someone's house, and a family birthday party a week ago. I quarantined for 5-6 days after each event. Everyone is vaccinated, no one wore a mask. So far we're all fine. But I'm all finished with social gatherings until I get my booster. My sister was going to Chicago to visit friends, (we live in South Carolina, ) and she was going to fly, now she will drive. Alone. My mother is torn between worrying about her driving alone and her flying during COVID.

The huge problem with Andrew Sullivanโs โlets just let it ripโ suggestion is that there is a huge part of the population that canโt get vaccines โkids under 12.
