Caroline In The City

I don't think anyone did. They just left the TV on in between Seinfeld and ER while the did other things.

I've always loved Lea Thompson, and Eric Lutes's glutes (hehe) and beefy body were also a plus.

It was so bad. And is replayed now on RewindTV.

It was part of NBC's estrogen lineup bloc with Suddenly Susan, The Naked Truth and Fired Up!

It was harmlessly mediocre, but compared to a lot of the comedies NBC threw on the air at the time, that was enough to seem halfway decent. In addition to the ones r3 mentioned (though I actually liked Fired Up at the time), there was the execrable The Single Guy which also debuted on Thursday nights the same season. Compared to that shit, it was practically great.

What possessed them to switch Caroline's love interest from Eric Lutes to gay, gay, gay Malcolm Gets?

It was part of that whole urban white yuppie in NYC thing. Made About You was one too. I used to watch that stuff and dream of living in NYC. I ended up living there for a while but my apartment was small and shitty and colorful friends never popped by.

It was such an unremarkable show that I'd forgotten all about it until I saw this thread.

Reruns came on for a time and i didn't realize how many cameos this show had like Chandler and Niles.

Malcolm Gets and Amy Pietz's interactions were funny. The rest, not so much.

Let's not forget "Ned and Stacey", which was even more dismal.

I watched for Eric Lutes who has turned into a very hot daddy. Google for pics.

It was a mainstreamed, less intelligent version of the "Days and Nights of Molly Dodd" which had been a ratings flop for NBC but a critics darling that had a devoted following. It was the kind of show that would have been a huge success for Netflix. I think Malcolm Gets' character was supposed to be like David Strathairn's character in "Molly Dodd". I never saw the Lifetime version of Molly Dodd, so I don't know if it was good as the original.

Ally McBeal stole the viewers.

I created an Eric Lutes thread on here back in 2012 that had a wicked OP photo of him in a speedo, but when Tinypic shut down the pic was lost forever.

Molly Dodd was way ahead of its time.

Ally McBeal was excruciating. Well, Calista was excruciating.

I think Lutes was at peak hotness when he guested as gay station manager Tom Duran on "Frasier". Sadly, it only lasted two episodes.

This was just before he landed "Caroline". I'm just sorry he wasn't cast in a series that made better use of his talents.

It had the shittiest hang out place of any sitcom.

I had no idea Thompson was meant to be playing Caroline in the episode of Friends she guest starred in.

I guess Caroline In The City, Friends, Frasier(as well as Mad About You and Cheers) were all meant to be set in the same universe.

I loathed this fucking show. I think it was because of “Richard”. Though Malcolm Gets had a hot body and they kept getting him shirtless for no reason.

That has to be the second worst show followed by Mad About You.

Weird trivia - Lea Thompson is deaf in one ear.

It was slightly funnier than "Suddenly Susan" but slightly less funny than "Jesse".

Nicole Sullivan (from MadTV in R6) told a story about running into Lea Thompson and her daughter years later at a charity function. The two of them made bitchy faces and whispered to one another while pointing at Nicole. Sad to know that someone who was Howard the Duck's love interest could be so humorless.

Nicole has said that her impression of Lea Thompson was the meanest thing she ever did on the show saying "Oh my God, we did a Caroline in the City parody, and I did Lea Thompson, and what we did to her was so inhumane. We raked her across the coals. It was cruel and unusual punishment... I think it was the meanest thing I ever did on the show. I made her look so stupid."

I watched it mostly because I loved her loft. Same with Mad About You, I loved their apt. In Mad About You, The only characters I liked were the Cat lady who had to leave work because her cat was anxious and I liked Steven Wright. But they were both stupid shows.

It's sad about Malcolm.

I enjoyed Mad About You because it was so off the wall.

Zoey seems pretty chill. But she was also good at playing bitchy on Ringer.

Amy Pietz somehow managed to score a SAG nomination for best actress in a comedy for CITC (1998). Her fellow nominees were Tracey Ullman (Tracey Takes On), Callista Flockhart (Ally McBeal), Lisa Kudrow (Friends) and Julia-Louis Dreyfuss (Seinfeld). Who and how many did she blow?

I watched Caroline as an occasional distraction, but it was no Friends. Definitely had a crush on Eric Lutes, he was the only reason I watched, hot, sexy, beefy, nice shoulders, I remember a hairy chest, always wanted to see more of him. And I do recall the Frasier guest spot, too. I believe years later he was in a big pharma TV commercial on a beach looking very mature and still so sexy! I bet he still looks good today, some men do age well.

Oh wow, you have to Google Eric Lutes, he still looks so good at almost 60!! In his Michael Kors underpants and blue speedos, he is still some FINE!! DAMN!! He's an artist too. He looks like a very hot and hairy sexy professor. I'm keeping my eyes on you, Eric Lutes. ;-)

Weren’t they the first stars of a tv show to be paid $1M per episode? It was jaw dropping for such a shit show. It fell out of syndication superfast. Nobody wanted to watch reruns of it. Different era and Gilligan is popular with successive cohorts of 5 year olds. And with Tina Louise's attitude, she should have considered herself lucky to be doing dinner theater.

At least the 5 year olds were satisfied watching Gilligan’s island reruns. Nobody wants to watch reruns of Mad About You. Paul Reiser’s toupees were literally over the top.

As a musical theatre-obsessed young gayling, I used to watch it solely for the Cats references.

Lea Thompson changed her hairstyle every 2 minutes on Caroline in The City.

Thompson has kept working but in C-list drek like Hallmark movies. No reason for her to make faces about someone satirizing her show.

I guess I was the only one to think the rollerskate guy was cute.

Is Eric Lutes still acting?

We made wicked fun of that show on datalounge when it was airing.

Eric Lutes mostly paints and does shows for his artwork these days, but he occasionally still acts. I follow him on Facebook. He does go from woman to woman though. He used to date some lithe redhead, and then he dated Jane Sibbett from Herman's Head for a few years, and then another woman, but I think he's single again.

I once spotted Eric roaming around Madison Square Park in Manhattan about 10 years ago and followed him for awhile. Those thighs and ass are even more magnificent in person.

If Lea were smart, she would have done a sequel called "Caroline in the Country". She marries an investment banker and moves to New Rochelle.
