The term "gaslighting" is now used by idiots who've no idea what it means

Shall we educate them, DL?

Good morning, Daffodilllls!

by Anonymousreply 1July 16, 2021 6:12 AM

I don't want to gaslight you, OP, but the video doesn't seem to match the caption.

by Anonymousreply 2July 16, 2021 6:19 AM

You've merely misplaced, the captions, Paula at r2.

Here, I'll put them in your bag for you.....

by Anonymousreply 3July 16, 2021 6:26 AM

You're SO forgetful, Paula!

by Anonymousreply 4July 16, 2021 6:26 AM

Ingrid was gorgeous in it.

The original Ingenue, r5

by Anonymousreply 6July 16, 2021 6:28 AM

The profile shots at the beginning, the way they are lit, what isn't lit. So good. (around 2:00)

by Anonymousreply 7July 16, 2021 6:29 AM

Was this an early Hitchcock?

by Anonymousreply 8July 16, 2021 6:30 AM

R6 excuse me????

by Anonymousreply 9July 16, 2021 6:30 AM

Lady Hollywood! How we could have possibly forgot YOU is passing all understanding.

by Anonymousreply 10July 16, 2021 6:32 AM

Not Hitchcock, Cukor.

by Anonymousreply 11July 16, 2021 6:32 AM

True, dear, you are older than I.

by Anonymousreply 12July 16, 2021 6:33 AM

Cukor had dark corners then.

Interesting.

by Anonymousreply 13July 16, 2021 6:33 AM

Angela Lansbury in an early role. And my personal passion, Joseph Cotten.

by Anonymousreply 14July 16, 2021 6:34 AM

Darling, since you decided to claim 29 until you were beyond dead, we're ALL "older" than you.

by Anonymousreply 15July 16, 2021 6:35 AM

Paulaahhh

I hope you are not beginning to imagine things again, Paulahh....

by Anonymousreply 16July 16, 2021 6:44 AM

I recommend serious Dataloungers to look into the works of heterosexual Patrick Hamilton.

He did Gaslight and the gayish Rope. He did the dark, moody and despairing 'Hangover Square' (which is NOTHING like the abortion of a film made from it) which displays his alcoholic obsession for an unattainable woman—

Tell more, r17.

How did you discover him?

by Anonymousreply 19July 16, 2021 7:00 AM

[quote] How did you discover him?

I looked at Google then Wiki and then visited a lending library.

by Anonymousreply 20July 16, 2021 7:25 AM

So many 20th century stories have been based on this one story.

by Anonymousreply 21July 16, 2021 7:31 AM

I was gaslit before all y'all. Before it was trendy and before I knew there was a name for it. But I knew it wasn't good. If someone is telling you that what's happening doesn't jive with your perception, trust yourself and your own reality. And get the fuck out.

by Anonymousreply 22July 16, 2021 7:32 AM

Who are you, R22? Should we know about you?

by Anonymousreply 23July 16, 2021 7:48 AM

I am old and wise, and am worth knowing.

by Anonymousreply 24July 16, 2021 7:55 AM

The term 'Gaslight' is misused - liberally - on social media, but is also denigrated by members of the same, as seen at r24

by Anonymousreply 25July 16, 2021 8:19 AM

Gaslighting these days means 'Disagrees with me' or 'Doesn't give me everything I want or job I apply for, and publish everything I write' and DOESN'T ASK ME HOW I AM!

by Anonymousreply 26July 16, 2021 8:30 AM

Well, yes, r26. That's rather the point of the thread.

I love you madly, though, for realising it.

by Anonymousreply 27July 16, 2021 8:36 AM

Remember, Ma, Blanche saw you put your car keys in the refrigerator and the eggs in your purse.

by Anonymousreply 28July 16, 2021 10:21 AM

R26 Unfortunately, there are so many of them that they are going to make their incorrect definition of it and use of it stick and become the norm, as in "I don't care what it means! It should mean this, therefore it does."

by Anonymousreply 29July 16, 2021 10:43 AM

Its cousin "narcissist" is also overused. Far more people are narcissistic ... or just shitty or unlikable or self-centered ... than are actual, card-carrying narcissists.

by Anonymousreply 30July 16, 2021 10:47 AM

"Gaslighting" is now used quite wrongly

by Anonymousreply 31July 16, 2021 10:52 AM

R30 And "sociopath."

by Anonymousreply 32July 16, 2021 11:00 AM

[quote] Joseph Cotten.

I've never been partial to him.

He wasn't particularly good looking and he carried the taint of being Selznick Contract player. You could tell he appeared in a picture as part of a deal with a more appealing property- Bergman or Welles.

by Anonymousreply 33July 17, 2021 11:51 PM

The outrage brigade on reddit in their infinite hive mind wisdom who constantly scream that the most minor thing in a relationship is abuse (usually written "ab*use" because the real word would trigger people) constantly scream about gaslighting.

by Anonymousreply 34July 17, 2021 11:59 PM

"I think my boyfriend is cheating on me, but he denies it." "Don't let him gaslight you!"

Ubiquitous, and it's a shame. What was once a useful word has become just another buzzword for the you-go-girl brigade.

(Have you ever heard anyone, ever, accuse a woman of "gaslighting" a man?)

by Anonymousreply 35July 18, 2021 12:39 AM

[quote](Have you ever heard anyone, ever, accuse a woman of "gaslighting" a man?)

Actually, it's pretty common on reddit subs focused on infidelity and cheating.

by Anonymousreply 36July 18, 2021 1:50 AM

Of course women gaslight. It's a common tactic of narcissists as the only reality is their own. The feelings and perceptions of others don't matter!

by Anonymousreply 37July 18, 2021 1:53 AM

R36, thank you. I'm clearly hanging out in the wrong part of Reddit (the naked part LOL). I mostly see "gaslighting" used in advice columns, and those are overwhelmingly female-dominated.

R37, I wasn't asking whether women actually do the thing we call "gaslighting". I was asking whether accusing women of gaslighting - using that word - was as common as similar accusations against men. R36 tells me that it is.

Boris the Nazi Incel likes to flick his clit while Donald Trump gaslights him.
