[Quote] Lemercier, who is 57, plays Dion — or make that Dieu — at every age in the film, starting as a 12-year-old girl,

Very convenient for the optics re Rene.

I'm just reading the NY Times review and laughing out loud at how ridiculous this sounds:

"I’m still reeling from the instantly iconic decision of the film’s 57-year-old actress-director Valérie Lemercier to play Celine Dion at every age of her life, including as a 5-year-old child. You see a lot of nervy things at Cannes, but this surely takes the cake. At 5, Aline takes the stage at her brother’s wedding and lets loose with an uncannily powerful singing voice. Dion did that, too, but I’m going to guess there was one crucial difference in real life: When 5-year-old Celine sang at that wedding, she wasn’t sporting the face of an AARP-eligible adult. Shrunk to Hobbit size and Facetuned into near-oblivion, Lemercier scampers, preens and unnerve."

I hope this is so so bad it is so so good. I'll watch. Celine is such a great bad singer, or is it bad great singer?

Watch your step r7. Data lounge is very protective of our sister Celine.

Hardly. It's just that singing troll.

by Anonymousreply 9July 18, 2021 2:01 AM

I don't know her.

I'm dying to see this. It sounds like inspired fucked-up casting on the level of Todd Haynes' "Superstar" and Todd Solondz's "Palindromes."

Sounds like a real WTF.

I saw the first half last night. They actually superimpose Valerie's face on a TODDLER for starters. Then when "Aline" turns 12 or so it's all Valerie, all the time. There's one scene where she's a teenager in the tub arguing with her mother and she looks older than Mom.

The only casting I've seen like it is Joan Crawford in STRAIT-JACKET, where she has to play a young bride in her twenties.

In one scene where "Aline" cuts her hair to signify her move from child to woman, Valerie Lemercier the director makes Valerie the actress spin in slow motion in a kitchen which suddenly seems to have a wind machine — and then adds a terrible CGI twinkle to Aline's tooth.

It's an absolutely bonkers movie and a totally sincere homage to Celine Dion. I can't believe John Waters hasn't sung its praises. DL would love it.

I don't know if it's an hommage or more the vanity project of a "superfan" who sublimates herself into the object of her obsession. The movie doesn't pretend to be a comedy yet it has an accidental camp quality that hardly makes it an hommage.

One of the most stand-out errors was to have the main character speak with the actress/screenwriter's natural European French accent, while insisting on casting most of the other roles with Québecois actors. There are even scenes where they exagerate that accent in a most non-flattering manner, making simple folk look like simpletons.

Like a train wreck, once you get a glimpse you can't not watch. Fortunately René, Papa and Maman Dion won't have to.

r13 here. I'm still watching. The biggest howler scene I saw last night was "Aline" deciding to surrender her virginity to the Rene character at the age of 17 (underscored by Janis Ian's "At Seventeen"). She arranges herself seductively in bed ... and I just had to get a screenshot for DL through my laughter. Aline looked more like Jerri Blank than a 17-year-old virgin.
