Why does Julia Roberts actively seek no publicity ?
She was a global megastar whose name alone guaranteed 100 million dollars at the domestic box office . She was also arguably the most talked woman at one point ?
She still commands respect and attention where ever she goes. So why do the entertainment channels don't talk about her as much as say J.Lo or Jennifer Aniston ? Is Julia tired of being popular ? Is she actively avoiding lime light and media to focus only on her work and family ?

Paparazzi hounded her, is she has any privacy now it’s hard won. She’s always a capable actress and on occasion, she’s been good. She was also very, very attractive and appealing when she was younger. She doesn’t deserve the shit she gets. Also Mike Nichols knocked the Julia Roberts right out of her before on film and I’ve liked her in other things.

I have some old (boring) gossip. I have a family member who is/was related by marriage to Julia's property manager/groundskeeper in New Mexico (don't know if still works for her). About 15 years or so ago my family member visited him at Julia's New Mexico ranch and he gave her a tour of the property. He said Julia was very nice and treated him very well. Gave him gifts like pinball machines and arcade games because she knew he was a fan. He said she was very low key and low maintenance. Before the kids were born, she preferred to stay in a small house on the property that had dirt floors as opposed to the larger, nicer house because it seemed cozier.
She seems nice enough, based on his account, but then I've also read gossip about how demeaning she is to other women, how she treated her husband's ex-wife, and so I don't know what to think. Whoever she really is, she is smart enough to not constantly court publicity. Regardless of her drug use and the issues with how she got married, she seems to have done a good job in preserving her reputation.

She downscaled her life to raise her children. She didn't want them growing up in LA and the celebrity and paparazzi bullshit. (See Will Smith's children).
Acting roles will come and go - but you only have one chance to raise children right and that's your longest legacy. It sounds trite but it's true.
She made a brave and unusual choice - good for her. Doesn't look like she regrets any of it.

JR was compelling in August: Osage County but since then not so much. Roles dry up for actresses in their 50s. She can play a Mommy role--Wonder, Ben Is Back--but her romantic comedy days are pretty much over. I wonder if she'll hold out for some well-written dramatic roles.

She learned from the movies stars of yore. She has been there and done that. She has no need to look for attention. And quite frankly she knows any director (besides Spielberg who just needs to let it go) would consider it a triumph to have her in a movie. She seems to be content with the "special guest star" credits or the "with" or "and" credits in anything she does.

M and Julia clashed on August: Osage County. Or at least during the press afterwards. Julia's team put out a rumor that Meryl would go supporting and Julia lead at the Oscars. They also cut the film so Julia had the last scene not Meryl like in the play.
Harvey W. even went on TV to say the rumors were false (like we'd trust him.)
Julia then relented and took the lower supporting nom and Meryl went lead.
She was kind of nasty at a press conference when asked about working with Meryl she said "Meryl needs her cues!" Implying Meryl would get mad if someone bobbled a line. When the crowd gasped Julia giggled and backtracked saying as she should. She's Meryl Streep.

She hasn’t even paid the 30k for her walk of fame star. You have to pay the fee and agree to a publicity tour. That’s why she never got one, even in the 90s when she was IT. Some people prefer quiet lives.

R34 if you get those two caliber of actresses together on one film it's never gonna be easy. Remember when the film was announced..."the world's best actress and the world's most famous actress." She’s literally achieved as much fame and success as a movie star possibly could - what’s left? She has absolutely nothing to prove - been there, done that x 1000.
She has found this kind of happy perfect medium - she somehow maintains her high level of fame (a hermit she’s not) without having to chase it (or seemingly not having to). Basically A-list emeritus.
And she’s a good actress too. Much better than most (on here certainly) give her credit.

She is from Georgia and she moved to Texas years ago to raise her family. She produces more than she acts. She still wants to be in the creative business and make money but yes, it seems pretty clear that fame is not the biggest goal in her game.
She has also said that she had serious depression years ago tied to a feeling of not being good enough and being too old. When she did that Amazon show a couple of years ago (I thought the show was OK but it was one of her best performances.), people here were brutal about how she has aged.
So yeah, why would anyone but particularly someone prone to depression from social pressures want to put themselves in the position to be judged so harshly for getting older and looking how their genes make them look?

I don't know if people just play into it for fun or if they really believe the rumors, but it's preposterous to think that all the women who are rumored to be evil megabitch narcissists (as Julia's reputation has been discussed endlessly here for years) really are.
I have a feeling she's a serious professional and introverted, maybe even melancholy by nature, and kind of no-nonsense. Maybe because everyone expects her to be the character she used to play a lot, just silly with a big old smile and always laughing, people think she's mean when she's just focused on getting the work done.

I thought she was more reviled on Data Lounge than this thread would suggest. I never thought of her as a brilliant actress, but I never thought she was bad. And for an actress whose looks are always part of the discussion, I think she was better still. Still not saying she's a great actress for the ages, but it always seemed she got a lot of unfair criticism.
August, Osage County may be the exception I know (not having seen all or maybe even most of her films) in which she is bad, exception. but she had no shortage of company doing the very same in that film as I recall.
As for her aging, of course she's older. Notting Hill was 22 years ago, but she's only 53 an age where a woman who takes reasonable care of herself can be quite good looking — she's got a good 80 more years before she looks as rough as that old trout Goldie Hawn or some of the horrors hidden behind wigs and industrial barrels of war paint. If she's made up to within an inch of her life and dressed extravagantly for Lancome, that's the nature of her work. Look up her "no makeup" photos and she looks good, maybe better than some of her made up looks.
As for moving out of Hollywood and keeping a quiet, low profile life for herself, that earns her more respect in my books than anything else. Contrast having a life that's mostly your own and on your terms with the stink of desperation that emits from so many actors, their faces and hairdos freakishly frozen in that look from their "prime" years, falling over over rich geezers eager to suck a wizened old knob or three for a walk on part in a TikTok.

I think JR doesn’t get as much publicity as her peers because she’s ‘happily’ married or presents that way. JLo, Aniston, Paltrow have all been through high profile divorces and are single, except Paltrow who has her crazy Goop antics that gets her publicity. So with the singles it’s all about who they are dating. The actress from that generation who I think is the thirstiest publicity wise is none other than Jennifer Garner. She plays demure, but it seems like all an act. The way she trots her kids out is certainly for attention. She would’ve been long forgotten if she didn’t marry Affleck.

The story what happened to Martha Mitchell is certainly one of the most shocking side stories around Watergate.
Did she divorce her husband immediately after they released her? Clearly all they did to her was done with his approval. She was actually beaten up in the hotel room where they had locked her away.
Mitchell always denied he approved all the campaign intelligence activities Gordon Liddy got involved with, but Jeb Magruder and others said Mitchell was the one who signed off on the DNC break in at the Watergate.

R78 Gay guy here...I don't understand why women are still condemned for having sex with people and gay men and straight men are congratulated for it. It wouldn't surprise anyone to learn that any given gay man has had sex with many of his gay friends. No one would look down on him. When straight men do it, the common interpretation is that he is a 'player' and those women are his 'conquests.' If a woman has sex with her male friends, then people bring it up constantly and throw it into the middle of a conversation with the expectation everyone will condemn her for being a disgusting filthy whore. That reaction is less and less common these days, but cmon, it's time to stop that. People fuck. It's nothing new.
