Men with painted nails

I've been noticing this trend of men with painted nails across the board. Celebrities (from Billy Porter to Machine Gun Kelly) and guys I see in everyday life in my city.

The trend isn't personally for me - but it can look cool on others

My only gripe is that once the polish starts chipping, shouldn't you take it off? It seems to look sloppy otherwise.

by Anonymousreply 89July 28, 2021 12:50 PM

Didn’t you already do this thread?

by Anonymousreply 1July 15, 2021 3:27 PM

Yeah there was another thread on this - but it needs to be repeated.

I find it ugly and distracting - mostly because men do not have long nails. It's these painted stubs on their hands that make them look like they have an infection or an injury.

by Anonymousreply 2July 15, 2021 3:30 PM

MAKE IT STOP

by Anonymousreply 3July 15, 2021 3:33 PM

I want to be open and accepting but it is just a boner killer for me, some things shouldn't be unisex.

by Anonymousreply 4July 15, 2021 3:35 PM

I have a male acquaintance who actually GREW OUT his nails so when he painted them it was more dramatic. That looks even worse.

by Anonymousreply 5July 15, 2021 3:36 PM

If the nails are painted for a day or two, okay, whatever. But don't make it a habit.

by Anonymousreply 6July 15, 2021 3:37 PM

I recently saw Hasan Piker with painted nails...

You have to know how to wear them, darlings.

The cute vet tech who works for our vet has an elaborate set of nails with bedazzling. I used to get semi hard when I saw him but those days are now over.

by Anonymousreply 9July 15, 2021 3:39 PM

When male celebs do it on the red carpet and it's part of their overall look for that event, it can be cool.

But it seems like a lot of upkeep for a regular thing regardless of who you are

by Anonymousreply 10July 15, 2021 3:39 PM

Men with who paint their real, short nails? Eh ok fine. Whatever.

A full on set of fake nails? I guess that's one way to save breath in telling the world you're in the early stages of transitioning to be a woman

by Anonymousreply 11July 15, 2021 3:42 PM

Its a turn off for me. Like a dick with piercing or a nose with septum ring or hairy balls.

by Anonymousreply 12July 15, 2021 3:44 PM

I don't think painted nails look good on anybody, male or female. It's the same with piercings and tattoos; the human body is naturally beautiful and should be left in its pure state.

by Anonymousreply 13July 15, 2021 3:45 PM

Yuck

by Anonymousreply 14July 15, 2021 3:48 PM

A young man who sometimes waits on me at a large grocery store has his finger nails painted pink. It doesn't bother me although I was somewhat surprised, but he's a bit slim and fem and I'm not sure if it does him any good.

by Anonymousreply 15July 15, 2021 3:49 PM

Similar attitude to painted nails these days as to males with pierced ears in the middle 1970s.

The more mainstream pierced ears became we just got used to it.

Probably be the same with painted nails.

by Anonymousreply 16July 15, 2021 4:26 PM

A pierced ear isn't fussy like painted nails. I don't think those fashion choices are similar at all.

by Anonymousreply 17July 15, 2021 4:28 PM

I used to paint the nail on my left pinky black in high school in the 80s. I was all edgy and shit. Or something

by Anonymousreply 18July 15, 2021 4:29 PM

Although I don't like the look, it's better than more tattoos or gauges or piercings.

I know a guy in his late 60's who has blue toe nail polish. It looks ridiculous and I always assume he's wearing it to hide fungal infections.

by Anonymousreply 19July 15, 2021 4:31 PM

It's cute on young emo guys but I'm not a young emo guy and I never found them attractive (too twinky, too uptight). I'm in the market for guys my age (40s) and I'd steer clear of anyone in my age group with nails painted jungle red or any other color.

by Anonymousreply 20July 17, 2021 1:36 PM

not my thing

by Anonymousreply 21July 17, 2021 1:37 PM

I just saw someone on Twitter do this.....a cute doctor and writer, suddenly wants to paint his nails.

I have a feeling he'll be going full Charlotte Clymer in the next few months.

by Anonymousreply 22July 17, 2021 1:40 PM

Men aren't the best at upkeep and painted nails need upkeep.

by Anonymousreply 23July 17, 2021 1:52 PM

Some straight guys have been getting pedis in their favorite team’s colors for a few years now - I guess it’s a male bonding ritual.

by Anonymousreply 24July 17, 2021 1:59 PM

Pre-covid the last time I had my nails done there was an elderly couple (mid 70s) getting mani pedis and he had them paint his toenails, an iridescent gold iirc

by Anonymousreply 25July 17, 2021 1:59 PM

R8 Yes. Perfect example.

Freddie’s looks in the 70s were flawless. Nails and all.

by Anonymousreply 26July 17, 2021 1:59 PM

I notice a lot of blue polish. What's that about?

by Anonymousreply 27July 17, 2021 2:04 PM

Yeah, it's always blue polish and blue hair. Maybe that generation has a Smurf fetish.

by Anonymousreply 28July 17, 2021 2:06 PM

My husbear has been getting his nails painted. He hates his feet and feels more positively about them with painted nails. I don’t have the heart to tell him I think it looks ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 29July 17, 2021 2:06 PM

This is a clear troll thread that we’re all feeding.

Anyway, I like the painted nails on guys.

This argument is bogus to me because guys have been painting their nails, especially in certain cultures, for centuries. So it’s not really “feminine”, but some people just like to make everything so toxic.

by Anonymousreply 30July 17, 2021 2:11 PM

Clear polish, maybe.

by Anonymousreply 31July 17, 2021 2:21 PM

[quote] but some people just like to make everything so toxic.

Hissssssssssssssss

by Anonymousreply 32July 17, 2021 2:21 PM

R30, it is feminine. Feminine is literally defined as "having qualities or an appearance traditionally associated with women." and painting nails has always been something women do. Of course, you probably don't believe women actually exist as a distinct sex.

by Anonymousreply 33July 17, 2021 2:21 PM

It is oh so transgressive. They are oh so brave.

by Anonymousreply 34July 17, 2021 2:21 PM

I was visiting my sister in a small town in northern Utah, we were waiting for a table for breakfast. The guy sitting across from us was waiting with who I assume was his wife or girlfriend, he seemed straight, but perfectly pedicured with bright orange nail polish. I don't care for the look, but to each his own.

by Anonymousreply 35July 17, 2021 2:24 PM

R33

You need to do your research. Men have been using nail polish since at least 3,200 B.C. Try telling tribal warriors who paint their nails they’re “feminine”.

You should just leave other men alone. I hate you people who are against individuality.

by Anonymousreply 36July 17, 2021 2:27 PM

It's the new man-bun or gold chain and it's insipid, asinine, and embarrassing. The most distracting and gross aspect is when guys are doing it to their toenails.

I think many of them play it off as "Oh, my daughter just LOOVVEESSSS to paint my nails so I let her!". No, that's bullshit. You're trying to be fucking edgy.

I don't know why we don't start calling out more male fraus because as American men continue to shed their testosterone and wallow in their pussification, they become more and more like Karens and helicopter mommy-fraus. And honestly, if I as a gay guy can be that turned off by it, I sometimes feel sorry for women who are looking for real, average guys these days. It must be really hard.

by Anonymousreply 37July 17, 2021 2:29 PM

R36, who paints their nails more in the entire world? Who has always painted their nails more? It's women. It is feminine. Just because you think calling something feminine is an insult doesn't make it so. Check your fucking sexism. You can start with the fact that you automatically assumed I was a man because of course you would.

by Anonymousreply 38July 17, 2021 2:34 PM

I think R33, I agree with you on the nail polish thing on guys but if you're a woman, or even if not, remember that for every little social trend or idiosyncrasy you feel is hijacked from women, there was something equally for men taken away from them, too.

I don't blame women for being perturbed by some of the recent trends and especially feel bad for women and girls where trans woman are infesting their spaces. But let's face it, women had no reservations about dismantling every male-only space and institution they could over the last four decades, all in the name of equality and feminism. Never pausing to think that maybe men deserved and needed their own spaces and traditions as well. So now, some of your chickens have come home to roost, and it makes you mad and irritated. And I would agree. But now it's YOU who are going to be called names and disregarded when you try to push back. That's what happened to men and you ladies are just now getting a little taste of it. Some might call that karma.

by Anonymousreply 39July 17, 2021 2:35 PM

R36 is telling someone to "check your sexism" while bitching about men wearing fingernail polish! LOL!!! Oh, the irony! The karma! But, the irony!!!

by Anonymousreply 40July 17, 2021 2:36 PM

Ok so what about men wearing long hair?

The point is its seen as androgynous more than feminine. It reflects the individual style of that person.

I mean you use to have the punk look and goth etc.

by Anonymousreply 41July 17, 2021 2:39 PM

R20, right there with ya. We should meet up, get our nails painted then go have a beer and discuss how absurd it makes us feel. Who knows, maybe we'll get cruised by a couple of sexy emo twinks! ;-)

by Anonymousreply 42July 17, 2021 2:40 PM

R40 has reading comprehension issues. I have zero problem with men painting their nails. I have a problem with people who think referring to something as feminine is an insult. And, painting your nails is a feminine act.

R39, which "all male" places did women take away from men? The vast majority of those fights were for places that excluded women not for the social reason of men having a gathering place to themselves but for the political, business, and economic reasons of excluding women from the places where political, business, and economic decisions were made at the highest levels. Women weren't trying to invade the MRA drum sessions or men's bathrooms, unlike when men did have things like Michfest shut down and have now invaded women's bathrooms. Even when they "invaded", for example, men's strip clubs (where no woman wants to be), that was because the idiot men would be holding their damn business meetings there.

The straight women's wedding parties invading gay men's bars is a different animal alltogether and has nothing to do with it being a men's space and has everything to do with their homophobic view that gay men are either their pets or something exotic and entertaining to be explored like going to the zoo. So, again, not a case of women trying to remove a 'male space' just so men can't have it. A lot of the arguments about women stealing 'male spaces' would be the same arguments that would be made about black people stealing 'white spaces' and the crossover of those two things in the white male population that claimed both happened to them, en masse, to their detriment is, in the very least, problematic for those white males making the claims.

by Anonymousreply 43July 17, 2021 2:58 PM

ANY gender can wear nail polish now and it's a thing with Gen Z. I'm tired of educating you dumb ass people that men and women can wear nail polish. Wear it, don't wear it, I don't care. I'm done!

by Anonymousreply 44July 17, 2021 3:04 PM

Men used to wear dresses, skirts, “eccentric” jewelry, long wigs, painted nails, etc. all the time and they were actually seen as high society and on top.

Today, a man can’t go out in a dress or something as simple as painted nails without being looked at weirdly.

It’s not fair that women can wear practically whatever they want (including men’s clothes), but men are expected to stay in a box.

It’s fucked up that tomboys are able to live freely while fem boys have it so hard. I’m tired of this shit.

by Anonymousreply 45July 17, 2021 3:07 PM

R45, you realize that the reason for that difference is that female and feminine things are seen as less than and lower in status, right? "Of course a woman would want to wear male clothing because she wants the status of men but why on earth would a man want to lower himself to wear female clothing? That is the thinking behind those particular discriminations. A lot of the homophobia gay men face is based in sexism against women and all things seen as feminine. Those homophobes just can't understand why any "real man" would want to lessen himself by "acting like a woman" in any way.

by Anonymousreply 46July 17, 2021 3:15 PM

Penn Jillette paints one of his fingernails red as a tribute to his mother, which is cool with me.

Tanner Malmedal from the Youtube channel Dope or Nope paints his nails too, but he doesn't ping at all.

by Anonymousreply 47July 17, 2021 3:23 PM

I'm not a fan.

I don't mind when men wear other traditionally feminine things (e.g., face makeup, women's clothing). I don't even mind if men wear long acrylic nails like the guy in the link as long as they're not painted. For some reason, I simply don't like colored nail polish on men. I barely like it on women.

It's a fad just like the long dangle earring and pearl necklaces. I don't think guys do it to make any type of statement on gender. It's just copying what male celebrities are doing and they think it will make them attractive to girls. Most I've seen with this look do not have any swag or natural glam to them that would make these things work, many are just poorly groomed straight guys.

I hate it but I think painted nails for men are here to stay for gay and straight men! They can join other effeminate things men do that are now ingrained in our culture just like:

Earrings

Guy-liner

The Man Bun

The Man Purse

Hair Extensions

Hair Barrettes

Crocs (UGH!)

Spanx (ie girdles)

Go Go Boots

Short Shorts

Hell, this could be thread all its own. [Girlie things that were thought to be only for females which are now also worn by men]

I thought we just did a thread on this.

My opinion is the same, nail polish looks best on people with elegant looking hands. A lot of men have fat wide fingers and some women do to. Nail polish looks like trash on people with hands like this. Some guys naturally have the rugged hands of a laborer. The contrast with the nail polish is just too much.

by Anonymousreply 87July 27, 2021 2:48 AM
