Tim Gunn Pens Letter to Heidi Klum Thanking Her for "Transforming" Him

Dearest Heidi,

How do I love thee? In more ways than I can adequately express. But let me try …

Do you remember the day that we first met? It was 17 years ago this month, but to me, it still feels like yesterday. We were in the forecourt of Parsons’ fashion building waiting to greet the first season of designers from "that-other-show." I was a complete wreck, because it was now clear to me that my behind-the-camera role as show consultant had morphed into something unexpected.

There I was, standing next to you, my knees shaking and soaked in perspiration. I had never been in the presence of a real star before, let alone an authentic supermodel. Furthermore, as gorgeous as you are on screen and in print, you’re breathtaking in person. Repeat: I was a wreck. You wrapped an arm around me, took my hand and said, "Don’t be nervous. Relax. We’re going to have an amazing summer."

Later in that season, I got to return one of your many kindnesses and offers of support. This time you were nervous about how the show would be received. You had shown a preview to so-and-so (another supermodel and host of another fashion-related show) who said to you, "It looks awful. Cancel the show and quit." This time, I took your hand and we sat and huddled. "Think about it," I remember saying. "She’s nervous and jealous. You and this show are competition for her. She wants to make you nervous and upset. Trust me. There’s nothing to be concerned about and everything to feel confident about." You leaned over and kissed me. And we had a fabulous season!

Needless to say, "that-other- show" became a big hit. We made 16 seasons together! Remember the night of our Emmy win for cohosts? That show dragged on and on and on with our category being second to last. At every break, we snuck out for champagne, lots of champagne. By the time the show finally got to our category, we were bombed — nervous, jittery, laughing bombed. WE WON! Hand-in-hand and shrieking, we ran to the stage. I planted a big kiss on Neil Patrick Harris, the presenter, and then on you. Neither of us can recall what we said into the microphone other than "thank you!" Backstage, we had to pull ourselves together for the press, which only caused us to cascade into more laughter. What a night!

Now with Making the Cut, we get to do what we love most: help find and promote the next global fashion brand while enjoying each other’s company. On "that-other-show," our roles were entirely separate and discreet. On Making the Cut, we get to play together every day! We love these opportunities to interact, we relish them: making croissants in Paris, sushi in Tokyo, shopping in New York.

But what an odd couple we are: the swan and the ugly duckling, the effervescent extrovert and the subdued introvert, the social butterfly and the hermit. We’re an odd couple, indeed, but with incomparable chemistry. Have I ever told you that you have single-handedly transformed me into a happier and more confident individual? Heidi Klum, I love and adore you.

Hugs and kisses,

Your TV Husband

by Anonymousreply 1July 15, 2021 3:19 PM

That was sweet!

by Anonymousreply 2July 15, 2021 3:22 PM

R2, yes it was very sweet, but I am a social diabetic.

by Anonymousreply 3July 15, 2021 3:25 PM

A Datalounge first for me: I agree with both r1 AND r2!

by Anonymousreply 4July 15, 2021 3:25 PM

MARY!

by Anonymousreply 5July 15, 2021 3:25 PM

If I win the lottery, I hire him to be my Mr. Higgins to shape me into someone as classy as him.

by Anonymousreply 6July 15, 2021 3:26 PM

I’m leaning toward r3.

by Anonymousreply 7July 15, 2021 3:26 PM

Kind of sad how he’s reducing the show that made his big to “that other show.” Very dismissive in a way that feels ungrateful.

by Anonymousreply 8July 15, 2021 3:29 PM

Well, the show producers did make them an insulting offer (with the intention of them rejecting the offer and the show could start fresh with new host and mentor?). The letter is pretty much promoting their new show, Making the Cut that allows them to maintain their TV relationship.

by Anonymousreply 9July 15, 2021 3:35 PM

I’ve read here that if you meet him on the street in NYC, he’s a very kind, unassuming guy. Through most of the PR run, he was the fan favorite, much more so than Heidi. Making the Cut had truly awful “wacky” segments in which he was so awkward and Heidi was shrill; I hope they’re not continuing those. Also Tim seems to have gained a bit of weight and his lovely suits are straining at the buttons. In the recent preview of the new season, that situation hasn’t changed…

Remember his Manhattan apartment was posted here? It was bandbox perfect.

Project Runway fucked over Heidi and Tim, not the other way around.

I believe that they wanted to dump Tim as mentor, and Heidi said no.

She's a good and loyal friend.

NOTHING like that backstabbing, disloyal cunt Tyra Banks.

by Anonymousreply 11July 15, 2021 3:44 PM

[quote]You had shown a preview to so-and-so (another supermodel and host of another fashion-related show) who said to you, "It looks awful. Cancel the show and quit."

Was it Tyra? If so that's too bad.

by Anonymousreply 12July 15, 2021 3:47 PM

R12, Tyra is jealous as FUCK.

She probably knew that Heidi and Tim had a hit on their hands, and she didn't want them to overshadow her lame ass fake show.

Hollywood people are like that. Cut throat, back stabbing, and disingenuous.

And Tyra Banks is ALL of those things.

by Anonymousreply 13July 15, 2021 3:49 PM

Good on Tim and Heidi.

by Anonymousreply 14July 15, 2021 3:53 PM

Project Runway wasn’t the same without them. Every change was awful.

by Anonymousreply 15July 15, 2021 3:55 PM

He seems like a genuinely nice guy

by Anonymousreply 16July 15, 2021 4:00 PM

I miss the days when shit like this would be private. Now we can all ooh and ahh about how sweet about what is clearly a pr move.

by Anonymousreply 17July 15, 2021 4:03 PM

At least he's not handing homemade cake to random pedestrians.

by Anonymousreply 18July 15, 2021 4:18 PM

New season starts tomorrow on Amazon!

by Anonymousreply 19July 15, 2021 4:18 PM

Not interested

by Anonymousreply 20July 15, 2021 4:28 PM

FUCK TYRA CUNT BANKS!!!

Heidi and Tim are the best.

by Anonymousreply 21July 15, 2021 6:08 PM

R15, Yes, the magic disappeared the minute they left.

by Anonymousreply 22July 15, 2021 6:23 PM

What does Tim Gunn think about Mackenroth's new career and the recent drama?

by Anonymousreply 23July 15, 2021 6:27 PM

[quote] What does Tim Gunn think about Mackenroth's new career and the recent drama?

He probably wants to join in the action.

I'm guessing that Miss Gunn hasn't been fucked since 1982.

by Anonymousreply 24July 15, 2021 6:29 PM

Is Tim still a blackout drunk?

by Anonymousreply 25July 15, 2021 6:29 PM

Who out of these clowns isn't?

by Anonymousreply 26July 15, 2021 6:31 PM

If he is, r25, would you still think he's the best like you do at r21?

by Anonymousreply 27July 15, 2021 6:47 PM

I don't judge, R27.

You can be a blackout drunk (as I am, on occasion), and still "be best!"

by Anonymousreply 28July 15, 2021 6:52 PM

I believe Project Runway went down hill when Kors left. Tim was checked out of the last few seasons even at times giving bad advice. While I did not like Christian as a contestant, I greatly appreciated him as a mentor.

by Anonymousreply 29July 16, 2021 7:20 PM

I must be alone. I became sick and tired of Heidi on Project Runway, as the show became too much about her. (I know that, at least in the earlier seasons, Nina and Michael allegedly used to make remarks when she wasn’t around that she could only read what the producers wrote on the cards… no perspective of her own. This comes from someone who was on set.)

I was more interested in what Tim, Michael and Nina thought than what Heidi uttered. Her “expertise” was wearing clothes.

by Anonymousreply 30July 16, 2021 7:38 PM

Not true, R30.

I think Heidi has a good eye for fashion.

It may be a German aesthetic, which is different from an American one, but I still think she has good taste.

by Anonymousreply 31July 16, 2021 8:58 PM

I think the show got much better without her.

by Anonymousreply 32July 16, 2021 8:59 PM

How could that have been the first time they met? I call bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 33July 16, 2021 9:02 PM

Just reads like something the publicity department created.

by Anonymousreply 34July 16, 2021 9:09 PM

ISFHH? What’s that mean?

by Anonymousreply 35July 16, 2021 9:14 PM

R30, you are not alone. I agree about Heidi.

by Anonymousreply 36July 17, 2021 12:21 AM

I just finished the first two episodes of Making the Cut Season 2. Naomi is really missed.

by Anonymousreply 37July 17, 2021 12:25 AM

I met Tim outside the barber shop at The Standard in downtown LA. I was a bit star struck, because I think he's a national treasure. He couldn't have been nicer. He asked me my name, and I asked him how filming was going for the show. As a poster said above, he was just as unassuming and pleasant. I rate it a 10/10 experience.

by Anonymousreply 38July 17, 2021 1:11 AM

[quote] I just finished the first two episodes of Making the Cut Season 2. Naomi is really missed.

I imagine the show had to cut a few corners.

by Anonymousreply 39July 17, 2021 1:53 AM

I loved the first few seasons of Project Runway with Michael Kors and Nina as judges. Heidi was surprisingly good at analyzing the designs. Tim Gunn was probably the glue that held it all together. Love Tim, actually. Don't laugh, but he's a friend in my head.

I don't know what happened, why the words "Project Runway" are no longer uttered. It makes sense that the powers that be wanted to get rid of Tim and Heidi said NO. Hence, Tim's loyalty to Heidi and hence not wanting to say "Project Runway."

by Anonymousreply 40July 17, 2021 2:50 AM

Do we have a Making The Cut Season 2 Official a Thread? I looked, and this is all I could find.

So far, I think the judges have got the weekly winners right. Absolutely loved Gary's coat in Week 1, and Joshua's kimono in Week 2. I almost bought the kimono for myself (MARY, yes lol, but I think it would look and feel great by the pool come summer) but it's polyester. If I'm going to buy myself a flamboyant kimono, I want a luxurious material.

by Anonymousreply 41July 17, 2021 6:43 AM

Did Heidi really used to ask "So... who do we hate" during the judging?

That's hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 42July 17, 2021 4:08 PM

R30 Michael and Nina are the reason GRETCHEN won over Mondo. They don’t have a leg to stand on.

by Anonymousreply 43July 17, 2021 9:18 PM

Joshua really made a comeback but basically he skated through the first week based on his past collections verses what he designed. He should have gone home.

by Anonymousreply 44July 18, 2021 1:08 AM

Tim Gunn looks like he cries after having sex.

by Anonymousreply 45July 18, 2021 1:09 AM

I think Lucie was very lucky to survive Week 2. Her outfit barely looked finished and had to be held up awkwardly by the model. Dushyant's clothes were kind of boring, but well constructed and at least he thought he had a vision. His own shirts are great, I'd wear them.

by Anonymousreply 46July 18, 2021 7:07 AM

All six viewers must be pleased that this show is back.
