I love Mariah's Melt Away from Daydream. It has the 90's trademark sound arrangement of love ballads, superb vocals with no use of autotune or Melodyne, a relaxing pace and adorned with romantic lyrics. One of Mariah's hidden gems. What are some of yours? Please share.

I love k.d. Lang, R41, but I'd never heard that before. So I appreciate you sharing. She has such an interesting voice and range, and she's capable of a lot of different things, musically.
One of my all-time favorites from her (and it was my favorite for a long time) is the cover of "Skylark", she did for the "Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil" soundtrack. It's sublime, and features her upper register. I hope at some point to see her live.

R124 Glad that you liked it. Cyndi was best known for the Laverne & Shirley theme song which appeared on the same album as the song posted above. It's rumored Gary Marshall heard it & approved of its usage. Cyndi affiliated herself in the early 90s with Pat Robertson's 700 Club in which she discussed how she had to deal with her career collapse. I don't think she is a LGBT advocate but hey you can listen to these artists for free now & put your money to a good cause like the Trevor Project right?

I think these artists were all considered popular at one time—whether they were necessarily good is a different story. If you know about them enough to say they’re trash, then they qualify as a pop artist. Otherwise, you’d only be able to say, “Who is that?”

R185: agree When I Saw You is one of Mariah’s best. I think the reason she’s never sung it live is probably more to do with her seeing it as one of her Tommy-made-me-write-a-schmaltzy-ballad-for-housewives songs though than not being able to sing it (though of course since about 1997 she wouldn’t have been able to do it justice).

by Anonymous | reply 322 | July 18, 2021 5:57 AM |
R300, it's really unfortunate that Emotions didn't do that well. After Emotions, we got the disposable Music Box. Emotions is very consistent, there are no bad songs on that album. And it has the best singing she ever did.
by Anonymous | reply 331 | July 18, 2021 4:50 PM |
Absolutely, r331. [italic]Music Box[/italic] had like three or four good songs on it; her subsequent albums also suffered from the same problem. [italic]Emotions[/italic] was her masterpiece. When she got all hip-hop after leaving Tommy Mottola, I liked her music less and less. I know that they started having problems in their marriage at some point, but not sure what album she was working on when all of that went down.
by Anonymous | reply 333 | July 18, 2021 10:06 PM |
R333 I think it was Butterfly. The titular single was about the end of marriage with Tommy. The album was also her transition to RnB and Hip-Hop. I think Butterfly was an awesome album. It has the remains of the old Mariah with ballads like Butterfly and My All written with Afanasieff and then, the new Mariah with urban/RnB tracks like Honey and Breakdown written with P. Diddy.
by Anonymous | reply 334 | July 18, 2021 10:21 PM |
I can't stand Butterfly. It was the start of her addiction to giving all her albums campy titltes. That trend only ended with Caution which was released like 5 years ago. Her voice is totally messed up sounding on Butterfly. I think Emancipation is better.
by Anonymous | reply 335 | July 18, 2021 10:49 PM |
Mariah was always R&B with pop elements, but Butterfly was when she segued to Hip Hop. Speaking of Music Box, the titular track is so good that it gives me chills.

All In Your Mind from her first album is another amazing ballad.
by Anonymous | reply 337 | July 18, 2021 11:35 PM |
Thanks r336. I’d forgotten what a good song that is.
by Anonymous | reply 338 | July 18, 2021 11:40 PM |
TEOM is one of her strongest vocal performances to date. One of the features of that album is that she doesn't overdo her breathy vocals and that quick transition thing she does between breathy and clear vocals which can be quite annoying sometimes. Her vocals in TEOM is so sharp, resonant and effortless contrary to that uncomfortable raspy shit she had in some of her previous works. I forget what era that is. But I remember her tribute performance to Patti Labelle singing If only you knew/Somewhere over the Rainbow. Those was her worst vocals to date. Compared to that, in TEOM, the belting notes in Mine Again and Stay the Night, the climax to WBT, It's like that and Don't Forget About Us are fucking breeze to the ears. Her best vocals IMO.
by Anonymous | reply 339 | July 18, 2021 11:42 PM |
I like a lot of Celine’s songs in French because she tones down the vocal gymnastics.
by Anonymous | reply 341 | July 18, 2021 11:47 PM |
R341: Agree. There’s something about the French language too I think. Perfect case in point for me is her song Je T’aime Encore. I knew the English version for years and didn’t think much of it, then heard the French version and loved it. It’s 10 times more emotional and beautiful I think. Ignore the ‘dying of cancer’ look in the video. Actually try to play it on Spotify or Apple Music over watching the video.
by Anonymous | reply 342 | July 18, 2021 11:58 PM |
Agreed R342. This is another favorite beautiful song in French.
by Anonymous | reply 343 | July 19, 2021 12:04 AM |
R343: love that song too. I saw her perform in Nice a few years ago and she did a mainly French set list (of course) and performed all three of the songs above. It was almost a year to the day of the Nice terrorist attack when that bastard ran over all those people with a truck and she referenced it a few times throughout. The songs really captured the sadness and grief in themselves though. I almost felt like I was intruding being there and not being a local. It was a real privilege to see her perform in French, at that time, in that place.
by Anonymous | reply 344 | July 19, 2021 12:14 AM |
R344 Hey Francophone DLers, I have a question for you. If the French "R" is pronounced with guttural sound, why is it that Edith Piaf sings her "R"s with the tongue and even rolls them? Can you help explain, s'il vous plait?

Springsteen's haunting "Meeting Across the River" sounds like Scorsese's Mean Streets put to music. I imagine the narrator did in fact "blow it", and he and his pal "Eddie" ended up *in* the river soon after the song's conclusion.

by Anonymous | reply 373 | July 20, 2021 12:23 AM |
Sorry R373 but a person can only post about 6 videos at a time before the thread will be closed for spamming.
I'm not a paying member so I can only post at certain times & prefer to get my 6 out before I'm stopped again.
Bonnie isn't my fav but I'm familiar with her songs as I had siblings who listened to the above 2 albums back in the 80s (besides who is gonna post songs that they're unfamiliar with? LOL!). The OP wants "beautiful songs that aren't well known by popular artists" & the above 6 tunes fit the bill.
No one has posted any of hers yet & someone on the DL might like her beautifully raspy voice as a change of pace to some of the above singers.
by Anonymous | reply 374 | July 20, 2021 12:30 AM |
Then why not just pick one of the six? Why the deluge? The more you inundate, the more you seem like some obsessed fanatic, and the less likely anybody will listen to any of them.
Somebody bombards the thread with tons of songs by Belinda Carlisle, or Mariah Carey, or whoever, I'm fucking NOT listening to a single one.
Somebody posts a single song by one artist...I know they've given it some thought, and they genuinely want to share it with others. They're not here just to shit out endless links to their favorite diva's filler tracks.

The over-posting is off putting and I’m now skimming past the posts -and I love half these artists you’re posting songs by. Just pick one or two a day and we’ll be more likely to give them a listen.

Sorry R375 As I mentioned earlier I'm no an obsessed fanatic with Bonnie Tyler & that's a dumb charge to throw out at someone who you don't know. I posted them for convenience for someone who is too busy with work, kids or spouses to search for new music that fits the OP's requests. I love new music & I'm usually listening to some while I post my 6 videos.
This thread is filled with nice things & you & R376 seem too picky to enjoy anything. I'm at the opposite side that you both are on. I've just got back from mowing my yard & you've posted nothing music wise in the past hour & I'm not interested in R375's Ronettes tune (which I've heard before) so I'm bored with this thread right now.
I don't care if someone like the OP posts 6 songs by Mariah or Janet as I only bought Mariah's first 3 albums & nothing from Janet after her boobs cover album in the early 90s so I'm curious to what I've been missing from them since.
I also usually pick only 1 track from an album as the most beautiful to post but like I mentioned with Pat Benatar some of her albums (Precious Time?) had no beautiful tracks that I wanted to post. I'm not obsessed with her either but one of my siblings was back in the 80s. I'm also not obsessed with a-ha but I had a friend (who died before they turned 27) who was crazy about them. I posted them as a tribute.
If you don't listen to any of my tunes (& the same goes for R375) do you think I really give a damn? Folks who want a new artist or a new song will give something a try if not I won't lose any sleep over these tunes. I'm not getting any royalties or DL $$$ from this. These are stressful times & someone out there might connect to a song & take their mind off of their troubles for a couple of minutes.

r378 is in dire need of attention right now.
by Anonymous | reply 379 | July 20, 2021 1:39 AM |
Sorry R377 but as a non paying member , I've been blocked weeks at a time so I post whenever I can. Maybe you all should just block me so you don't have to complain about my output. This thread doesn't have to many folks posting to it to begin with. I've probably posted over 90% of the songs that fit the OP's requests anyway. Most threads don't make it into the triple digits on the DL so enjoy the thread while it lasts.
by Anonymous | reply 380 | July 20, 2021 1:40 AM |
R380 We're trying to enjoy it. And we'd enjoy it a lot more if we didn't have to watch you dump.

R381 BITCH BITCH BITCH
by Anonymous | reply 382 | July 20, 2021 1:43 AM |
Goddamn -- I took the dumper's advice and blocked them, and at least half the freaking thread disappeared!
by Anonymous | reply 383 | July 20, 2021 1:54 AM |
There's a guy who will post lots of links at one time in the "What are you listening to now?" threads. Obviously he can't be listening to ten songs [italic]now[/italic]. I wonder if this is the same guy.
by Anonymous | reply 384 | July 20, 2021 1:58 AM |
I'm the OP of this thread. I'm giving at least one listen to each posts so far. We can do this but I must admit, I don't know about 90% of the artists posted here. I guess my exposure to pop music and artists is too mainstream.
by Anonymous | reply 385 | July 20, 2021 2:04 AM |
Most of the "popular" artists mentioned on this thread are pop divas that haven't been relevant in 20 or 30 years. The reason the songs are lesser known is because most of them are shitty songs that weren't popular when they were originally released.
by Anonymous | reply 386 | July 20, 2021 2:13 AM |
R85: another version of September In The Rain, and a far nicer voice to listen to than Norah Jones I think (not a jazz fan which is probably why)
by Anonymous | reply 387 | July 20, 2021 2:16 AM |
So, the totally-not-obsessive poster supposedly doesn't have a lot of time to post, yet somehow manages to find time to post hundreds of links.
Got it.
by Anonymous | reply 388 | July 20, 2021 2:26 AM |
You can easily post 6 songs in about 4 minutes R388.
It doesn't take hours at a time if you know what you're doing & have the songs ready to go (like on a YT playlist or some other site) when you're allowed to post again.

No R422. I recall Shirley being tied to more than one anti-gay tale (involving her words & treatment of gay men)over the past 20 years.
I put her in the same camp as Trump partygoer Taylor Dayne. They take our $ for years & don't always do right by us off the stage =
by Anonymous | reply 423 | July 20, 2021 7:34 PM |
And finally the best unreleased song off of her most beautiful album =

If nothing else, I've learned that certain artists recorded more albums than I'd ever imagined.

Elton John: "Song For Guy", "Harmony"
Linda Ronstadt: "Adios"
Carpenters: "Let Me Be The One"
Dusty Springfield: "The Windmills Of Your Mind"
Whitney Houston: "All At Once"

This thread should be renamed Lesser Known Songs By Belinda Carlisle and Other Artists
by Anonymous | reply 437 | July 21, 2021 2:34 AM |
R437 Nothing wrong with that. Belinda & The Go-Go's always do well on DL threads. Someone posted several of hers above.

You Used To Love How To Dance - Melissa Etheridge
by Anonymous | reply 443 | July 21, 2021 2:54 AM |
R436: this is the type of song definitely deserving of a place on this thread. It’s bizarre it’s from some weird unknown guy’s concept album about beer. It’s a new song but Belinda’s voice sounds like it’s from the late 80s/early 90s. I’ve not been a fan of the two or three new pop songs she’s recorded in the last decade or so but this is great.
by Anonymous | reply 447 | July 21, 2021 4:47 AM |
R447 I agree. The songs she has recorded since her French album haven't been my favs either but I'll take something over nothing.
by Anonymous | reply 448 | July 21, 2021 5:10 AM |
Great choice R448
by Anonymous | reply 450 | July 21, 2021 5:14 AM |
Thank You R450. That band doesn't get enough credit except for their one big hit.

I can't believe that no one has posted a Kylie song yet =
by Anonymous | reply 452 | July 21, 2021 5:20 AM |
R:452: good point. This was a single but didn’t do that well anywhere and I expect most US people wouldn’t know it unless big fans. One of her best I think.
by Anonymous | reply 453 | July 21, 2021 5:23 AM |
I think this could've been her nest top 10 hit
here in the US after The Loco-Motion song =

Liberian Girl doesn't count. Everybody knew that song. The video was a star-studded affair.
by Anonymous | reply 477 | July 22, 2021 5:05 PM |
Linda Ronstadt, "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me"
by Anonymous | reply 478 | July 22, 2021 5:11 PM |
L. Girl does count R477. It's beautifully done by a popular artist & is one of his lesser know hits (I doubt that it would show up on his top 20 or even top 25 hit song list). The video means nothing as most folks have probably never seen it (I didn't even know it had one). Annie L. made videos to all of her songs on an album posted above around R460 but that doesn't make them "well known hits" either.

Regardless R479, Liberian Girl was played all the time on the radio back in the day. If you want a beautiful lesser-known MJ track, try Stranger in Moscow.

This should have been this thread's first Donna Summer song.. It got wasted as a B-side despite it becoming Summer's favorite song of those she wrote. I used to listen to thus 7" over and over as a kid and still love it. What a voice.

Amy Grant and Keb Mo on a song that was on a greatest hits/contract closer from A&M. Unfortunately, Spotify doesn't have this song or album.

"What a Good Boy" - Barenaked Ladies.
I'm not the "five-song-per-post" threadhog. r525 reminded me of this other BNL song, which I've never heard except on a gay-oriented episode of Homicide: Life on the Street.
