I stopped watching this trash years ago when they started nominating like 8 people per category. Ridiculous. Just because there's more shows than ever, even through it's mostly garbage, doesn't mean they can't just nominate 5 the way it had always been. There's hundreds of movies every year and yet the Oscars still manage to nominate the 5 most liked in each category. Participation nominations are ridiculous.

Thanks for picking up the rest of the nominations that weren't announced live, R20.
I'm really happy that Evan Peters finally earned an Emmy nomination, and I think he has a decent chance to win. It's kind of surprising that John Boyega was left out. Ethan Hawke and Nicole Kidman also didn't make it, which is a bit surprising for both.

I wanted to like Lovecraft Country but thought it was a deeply flawed show. Though all the emmy nominations must make HBO feel a little bad about canceling it.

I used to watch the Emmy awards and was fan of it for so many years
But ever since they have expanded the categories to 8 to 10 nominees, I no longer watch - I personally feel by expanding categories to 8 nominees each just cheapens the whole awards process. It should be five nominees per category.

I think William H. Macy did really good work in the final season of Shameless, but I'm still surprised he got a Best Actor nod -- nobody talked about the show and there was the matter of his wife's jail time.

I still watch The Daily Show, but it's been [bold]really[/bold] weak since Trevor Noah has been doing the show from home.

by Anonymous | reply 52 | July 13, 2021 4:38 PM |
Glad to see all the noms for Lovecraft Country. It wasn't a perfect show, but damn there were some great stories & acting. This show really reminded me of when TV shows like this were exciting and indulgent. They also got a nom for Best Visual Effects, well deserved.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | July 13, 2021 4:39 PM |
I say this as someone who binged and overall enjoyed It's a Sin: It really wasn't anything groundbreaking, and other than the guy who played Colin or NPH, the performances were amateur-ish.
That said, stupid shit like Uncle Frank, Kenan, Emily in Paris, and The Kominsky Method got nominated, so what do I know!
I'm happy for everyone involved with Hacks, Mare of Easttown, WandaVision, Ted Lasso, and The Crown....loved all of them and each showcased amazing performances.
Sadly, while diversity needs to be addressed, heavy-handedly nominating every black or Asian person in a show is so patronizing. What did Rege Jean Page do other than be hot? Bowen Yang? Really? The entire cast of Hamilton? Please.

It's A Sin wasn't perfect but it is every bit as deserving as many series that were nominated. I am shocked it was completely shut out.

Best Actress in a Limited Series is going to be a nail-biter. Ugh, Michaela Coel, Kate Winslet, Elizabeth Olsen, Ana Taylor Joy...they were just all soooo good. However, if I were voting my biggest struggle would be choosing between Kate and Michaela.

Are they trolling us with the “Emily in Paris” nomination?? That’s a glaringly ridiculous one to be named “best” anything. The rest of the noms sound fine to me I take it “succession” didn’t meet the criteria for this year’s awards- I was surprised to see no nominations for that show.

Black-ish (ABC) was also nominated.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | July 13, 2021 7:20 PM |
It's time to stop nominating these tired same people for awards, starting with The Handmaid's Tale, and Black-ish, and Janney, Macy, etc. You had your chance, no one watches your shitty shows anymore and you're not doing anything special in them.
Also- to pack the guest ACTOR in a comedy series with nearly all SNL hosts is ridiculous. The last time someone did anything nomination worthy on that show as a host was Tiffany Haddish back in 2017. All it does is keep real performances from being recognized.
Lastly- MJ Rodriguez got nominated for one reason only. Tranny. Can't act for shit and is cross eyed.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | July 13, 2021 7:23 PM |
It's a Sin- I've seen the show as a possible Emmy nomination prediction on GoldDerby and Variety.com as recently as June.
The show was greenlit by Channel 4 BECAUSE HBOMax agreed to help finance it. HBOMax insisted that it have at least one US recognizable actor like Neil Patrick Harris in it, and that was one of the reasons he was cast.
I bet they submitted it.

R73, I agree that it's become ridiculous how those categories are now essentially Best Male and Female SNL hosts of the season Emmys. I don't even think SNL cast members belong in the Supporting categories either, and that results in a lot of lazy nominations in those categories.
Cecily Strong can be very funny but didn't show up for at least half of the episodes last year, while Kate McKinnon is actively off-putting at this point.

Female lead in a comedy is a difficult one for me, because I love Kaley Cuoco's The Flight Attendant, but also Jean Smart in Hacks. And then there's Allison Janney being nominated for the final season of Mom. I could see the votes being split between Allison and Jean and Kaley getting the win.

For those complaining about The Handmaid’s Tale’s nominations, this season was a complete game changer and the performances were spectacular. I think Alexis will prevail again, her arc definitely took an interesting twist. I’m just sad there wasn’t room to add the actress who play’s Janine who did some heavy lifting this season.

I was stunned by the lack of nomination for Joseph Fiennes. If I had to pick, I would have dropped Max Minghella's nod in exchange for Fiennes. Fagbenle and Whitford are very deserving, Max not so much.

R109, Taylor-Joy beat Coel at the SAG awards, and the Golden Globes didn't even nominate Coel at all. Taylor-Joy hasn't gone against Winslet, though.
I think Taylor-Joy has it. The Queen's Gambit was such a phenomenon, and it feels like such a star-making role that voters will probably choose her over Winslet.

I’m ecstatic over The Boys nomination, I’m not of fan of the Marvel/DC worlds and anyone who doesn’t get that obsession this show is for you. The inclusion of the Nazi story line this past season and the truth who’s manipulating everyone really upped the game and the performances were just as worthy of nominations which I wished they had gotten too. Season three is about to drop, I highly recommend people to give it a try, I think many will be drawn in by the great story telling and anti hero hero superheroes.

[quote]I’m ecstatic over The Boys nomination, I’m not of fan of the Marvel/DC worlds and anyone who doesn’t get that obsession this show is for you.
The interesting thing is "The Boys" is part of the DC world. The comic was published under DC's imprint Wildstorm.
Although I didn't stick with it I was very surprised that neither Bryan Cranston, Michael Stuhlbarg or even the writing for Showtime's "Your Honor" was recognized. It was award bait through and through.

Kenan Thompson sucks on SNL and on his sitcom. He was even awful as a kid on shows like All That, Kenan&Kel, and the other things he did during his child star days.

Evan Peters was the best thing about Mare of Eastown by far. Hope he wins.

I love that Kenan has made it. That's a true child actor success story, but he was not good in those things. Even judging it on the basis that nearly all kid actors are atrociously hammy Kenan was truly the worst of the worst offender at bad child acting. Nick Cannon, Lori Beth Denberg and crazy Amanda Bynes were excellent on "All That", but Kenan is as hammy now as he was then.

I hope Emma Corrin wins for "The Crown." I'm not sure whether she chose the engagement episode or the Australia episode, but she deserves it for either . I worry Olivia Colman--who didn't have a great episode this season, but of course had to be nominated because she's Olivia Colman playing the Queen--will siphon off votes and so neither will win.

The one I most want to win is Kathryn Hahn for "WandaVision." As far as I'm concerned that was the performance of the year.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | July 14, 2021 12:12 AM |
Yeah R145. Olson was fine/good, but Hahn was the standout for that series. She deserves it.

Pose deserved nothing this season. Season three was horrible, except for Elektra's episode. In fact, I think if anyone deserved a nomination, it was Dominique. She improved dramatically this season and was great in her backstory episode. Nothing against MJ but she mostly just recited earnest dialogue and lectured people.
Billy Porter was playing to the last role, hammed it up so bad. He reeked of desperation for another Emmy nomination.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | July 14, 2021 12:45 AM |
Yes Billy Porter was not good in this season. But I’m really glad MJ was nominated. Katherine Hahn is one of my favourite actors. I hate the way they just nominate the one show- did handmaids really deserve all those acting nominations?

I was hoping for a nomination for Sheila Atim from Underground Railroad. Episode 10, “Mabel” was almost totally about her. She had so much presence, and conveyed so much with little dialogue.

I agree. It took the Emmys years and years to break free of its long-held habit of only nominating shows from the broadcast networks and finally recognize shows on cable (and, years later, streaming). Now they've completely turned the corner and it's no longer cool to nominate anything or anybody from the broadcast networks (they're lucky if they get 3 a year), plus the fact Goranson is giving her performance, however great, in a reboot of an old show, so I doubt she ever really had a chance.

The voting bloc aren't watching entire seasons - they're only watching what the performer submitted. They don't have to religiously watch a series to judge whether an actor is worthy of a nomination.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | July 14, 2021 5:45 PM |
I can't believe the South African actress Thuso Mbedu didn't get nominated for The Underground Railroad. Emmys had an opportunity to be classy and instead went for tacky. They should've excluded Erivo.
Erm, there was room for both Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle in Best Actress in a Comedy for PEN15. No need to nominate Allison Janney, Tracie Ellis-Ross, etc. They should be giving special Emmys to PEN15, it's unbelievable what these two do.
Enough with the Hamilton nominations already. So stupid.
Steve McQueen and Small Axe really got a raw deal.
by Anonymous | reply 173 | July 14, 2021 5:59 PM |
I believe the reasons they expanded the numbers of nominees a few years back was because year after year the same people were getting nominated, often coasting off of better performances earlier in the run.
By adding a few slots, it guaranteed some fresh faces whose work would be screened by voters.
I thought Peters was quite good but his character was killed off to soon to make a strong impact.
MJ deserved the nomination, succeeding in bringing life to her character despite terrible writing. (And the fact that Pose was nominated for writing… don’t get me started. Writing profs could pick almost any episode this season and use it as an example of how not to write.)

I'm sure R174 is absolutely right. I just always figured it was the Emmys following in the Oscars' footsteps after the Motion Picture Academy opened up the best picture category to more than 5 nominees (after the whole "Dark Knight" controversy). Perhaps my timing is off but it just seemed after that happened, it opened the door for expanding the amount of nominees in other categories. (Interestingly, AMPAS has kept its acting categories restricted to 5 nominees.)
by Anonymous | reply 175 | July 14, 2021 7:38 PM |
They only submit episodes after they are nominated and voting for the winners. r172
There are often hundreds of submissions in any given category (most ludicrous that don't stand a chance but contracts demand they be submitted anyway.)
Even then it is thought that very few people watch the submitted episode and instead vote for the shows they regularly watch like Handmaid's Tale etc.
I seriously doubt much of the elderly white academy watched Zendaya's show and thought she was the best. She won because of George Floyd.

It’s embarrassing all the nominations they gave to Bridgerton which is just Edwardian soft core pron. It’s fine that it has an audience but they don’t need to nominate it for awards. I just laugh every time they nominate that Rege Jean-Page. He was just a pretty thing to look at and the role mostly required him to jerk himself off. The drama and comedy nominations are woeful anyway.

Bridgerton is from Shonda Rhimes. I think she must be in Hollywood's version of Skull & Bones. That's why she gets all the big money deals and awards.
I am starting to wonder if Darren Star is in some sort of trouble, and he needs Emily in Paris to be as big as Bridgerton? I don't think it's Netflix pushing Emily In Paris for all these awards.

Bridgerton was a well made tv series. It had high production values, was well written and perfectly cast. And the millions of people who watched it really enjoyed it.
And Rege Jean-Page gave the stand out performance. It's clear from his interviews that he's nothing like the character. Whether it's more comedy or drama is a separate issue.

"It's a Sin" would have gotten some nominations had the series been more than 5 episodes. The characters could have been more deeply developed had they been 10 to 12 episodes. Would love to see a second season with the remaining characters. Callum Scott-Howells should have gotten a nomination. Olly Alexander was miscast as the lead, and was not a loveable character.
by Anonymous | reply 194 | July 15, 2021 3:01 PM |
r194, I don't think award shows care about the likability of the characters. And I think the show would've been a perfect fit for the mini series category.
Plus, if reports are right about Davis' full vision of the series, it was a good choice to cut it down to the number of episodes as it is. And I think Olly was right for the defiant, at first, ignoramous who has to suffer for the consequences of his actions and still maintain some shred of dignity where he doesn't regret his choice of having sex with men.
by Anonymous | reply 195 | July 15, 2021 3:32 PM |
