‘The Boys in Red Hats’ Investigates Nick Sandmann’s MAGA Smirk Seen Around the World

With The Boys in Red Hats (in theaters and on VOD July 16), director Jonathan Schroder mounts a highly personal investigation into the January 2019 Lincoln Memorial standoff between Kentucky’s Covington Catholic High School students and Native American activist Nathan Phillips. That incident was made famous by Nick Sandmann’s smirk seen around the world, which immediately turned the teenager into a viral villain, and Schroder, an alumnus of Covington, is upfront about the fact that his documentary aims to clear his alma mater’s (and Sandmann’s) good name. Yet to the surprise of himself, and to us, what he delivers is something more complicated—if, ultimately, still a bit too facile.

Like millions of others, Schroder was angry and embarrassed by the notorious clip of Sandmann arrogantly smiling in a drum-beating Phillips’ face, and his reaction was compounded by his connection to Covington, an all-male institution for Northern Kentucky’s wealthy (and predominantly white) elite. As conveyed through first-person narration set to comical animation that resembles sketches in a school notebook, Schroder’s relationship with Covington was a messy one. Schroder loved the camaraderie and sense of self-worth provided by Covington, but the football scholarship that got him in didn’t shield him from slurs about his poor background (from the absurdly named Sugartit, Kentucky), and on one unforgettable day in class, a revered teacher punched him in the forehead—and he chose to stay silent about it lest he suffer additional discipline and ostracization.

Boris thread.

by Anonymousreply 2July 13, 2021 12:41 PM

So, is it going to come out that he has “resting smirk face” and it’s not his fault? And what is the little shit up to now, I remember him being a Trump youth voting advocate ambassador or something during the elections, but there wasn’t a follow up I saw of the heartbreak of his man not winning.

by Anonymousreply 3July 13, 2021 12:45 PM

“His man” became Mitch McConnell, who did win. Sandmann was part of the McConnell campaign.

by Anonymousreply 4July 13, 2021 12:59 PM

R3, Sandmann was given a t.v. piece at the Republican Convention, but I haven't seen a follow up as to how the little shit is reacting to Trump's loss.

by Anonymousreply 5July 13, 2021 1:09 PM

Whatever happened to this cousinfucker?

by Anonymousreply 6July 13, 2021 1:10 PM

The kid is a high schooler. I blame the faculty and escorts of the students for not intervening and pulling the group back. Sure, he had resting smirk face, but he never should have had the media come down on him like they did at his age. In fact, it may have backfired.

by Anonymousreply 7July 13, 2021 1:27 PM

I beleive all law suits were settled and word is they got far less than the 2 billion they were asking for....like thousands not millions.

by Anonymousreply 8July 13, 2021 1:56 PM

The media is desperate for outrage views and they did go overboard. Sandmann got singled out because he's a dumb-looking smirkface (and he's developing crazy eyes as he gets older) and you can see him enjoying the attention from the smartphones around him.

When people heard the Black Hebrew Israelites in the full video they freaked out and decided the teens were victims, especially when Philips said he was trying to keep the teens from attacking the black preachers. No one does nuance and no one could understand that Philips was protecting the Black Hebrew Israelites' free speech, which is vile and vulgar, but still protected in those free speech areas.

The teens got worked up over the incendiary language and because the Native protesters were right there, they took their antsy teen confusion-aggression out on them.

[quote]Phillips said, "They were in the process of attacking these four black individuals.... These young men were beastly and these old black individuals was their prey, and I stood in between them and so they needed their pounds of flesh and they were looking at me for that."

Sandmann said he stared at Philips to let him know he wouldn't be "intimidated or provoked." Philips wasn't attempting to provoke, he was trying to defuse, but Sandmann by his own admission was looking to "best" Philips, to win some contest or war he thought was going on between them.

by Anonymousreply 9July 13, 2021 1:58 PM

The media's and public's behavior in this was shameful. Most comments were that these baby Trumpsters were acting like little jerks, and they were, but some people went nuts and started threatening Sandmann and others with death. Philips and reporters were threatened, too.

When the public opinion shifted, the media were saying Philips had given "conflicting reports" when he didn't, but they wanted someone to blame. A reporter said she watched the full video and still felt the kids were disrespecting Philips, and got so many death threats she had to leave Twitter.

Sandmann and his family turned into full-on grifters and are suing anyone with a pulse.

Which reminds me...did anyone ever look into how someone with a 14% approval rating won by a huge margin?

by Anonymousreply 11July 13, 2021 2:05 PM

It's not a smirk, it's just a smile. Calm down now because it's all ancient history.........

by Anonymousreply 12July 13, 2021 2:51 PM

Let's not forget that they were there in the first place to protest abortion.

by Anonymousreply 13July 13, 2021 2:59 PM

TBH, Sandmann's biggest crime seems to be not being mature enough or brave enough to question the party line he's being fed by his school, his parents and his church.

I know plenty of people like him who didn't have that epiphany until they were in their 20s.

In fact, there is a figure, perhaps the most beloved figure of all beloved figures on Datalounge, who was a Goldwater Girl when she was in high school because that's what was expected of girls in her Chicago suburb and she didn't see the light until she got to college.

Maybe give Nick the same leeway.

by Anonymousreply 20July 13, 2021 4:55 PM

"Maybe give Nick the same leeway."

Republicans and religious people are masters of indoctrination. You become a non-entity if you stray from the doctrine. See: LIz Cheyney. So there's little hope a turd like Sandmann will ever change his mind. Besides, he has to protect his white privilege.

by Anonymousreply 21July 13, 2021 4:56 PM

He's now a student at Transylvania University, a well-regarded liberal arts college known for being left-leaning and inclusive. Maybe there's hope for him yet, who knows.

by Anonymousreply 22July 13, 2021 5:07 PM

There's a pretty good chance he went to a liberal college on purpose, as part of his ongoing "own the libs" agenda.

[quote]Nick Sandmann: "I'm a pro-life conservative Republican college student who won't let cancel culture silence me"

Sandmann has a hell Of a lot of work to do catching up. But then he is a straight white male, and they are allowed to be adolescents until their 30s.

by Anonymousreply 26July 13, 2021 6:02 PM

LOL R26

The point was not to create a 1:1 comparison of Sandmann to Hillary

It was to say that even for someone like Hillary, breaking away from the political views of your parents and communities takes time, give someone much more basic like Sandmann time to evolve. As others have noted, he's at a liberal arts school, not Liberty U.

[quote]Which reminds me...did anyone ever look into how someone with a 14% approval rating won by a huge margin?

R11, McConnell had low approval ratings, but he was running in Kentucky, a ruby red state that Trump won by 25 points. There was no way he was going to lose.

Kentucky used to be a competitive state back in the 1990's when Bill Clinton won it twice in 1992 & 1996, but now it's a Trump state.

by Anonymousreply 33July 14, 2021 12:44 PM

Bingo Poll Troll

People got thrown by the fact that Kentucky elected a Democratic governor, but that was a fluke in that people despised the GOP governor who was running for reelection.

And McTiurtle's opponent. McGrath, was not a very good candidate.

by Anonymousreply 34July 14, 2021 1:20 PM

Sorry but it wasn't just a low approval rating. There were Democratic counties that magically went for McConnell after not having gone for him previously. We've caught the Repugs cheating in other states. It needs to be looked into because just brushing it off when there are so many actual numbers that don't make sense just emboldens them. Why were the polls so far off there but no in other places? Whatever they accuse others of, they are guilty of. That's the Repug way and all they've talked about for a year now is voter fraud.

Some of you seem to be blind to body language and facial expressions if you think that was just an innocent smile.

R38, not when the polls in those areas were, shockingly, the polls that were off. It's so strange how the polls are always, always, always "off" in a way that favors the Repugs. It's shocking that the disappearing demographics that make up the Repug party just keep surprisingly showing up in all these Democratic areas. Yet, the Democrats never outperform the polls by double digits like the Repugs. It's been happening for almost a decade now.

by Anonymousreply 60July 15, 2021 5:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 63July 15, 2021 6:40 PM

What was the crime here, again? Was it just that Sandman refused to move when the Native American man marched through class group while beating a drum? Was there a me too aspect to this? I can't remember what the crime was. I hope it wasn't that he was smiling white wearing aMAGA hat. I think they're certainly a fashion crime, but I don't want it going further.

by Anonymousreply 64July 15, 2021 6:41 PM

R64, there was no crime. Just a smug white entitled kid in a MAGA hat blocking an American Indian.

The history of America summed up in one moment.

by Anonymousreply 65July 15, 2021 8:44 PM

R65 oh, is there a different video where the kids blocked the Native American man? On the video I saw, the man walked deliberately into the crowd students, most of whom parted rather than confront him. If I walk into you, it's dishonest to say that you were "blocking" me.

by Anonymousreply 66July 15, 2021 8:49 PM

[quote] On the video I saw, the man walked deliberately into the crowd students, most of whom parted rather than confront him.

Everyone respected the man by moving aside as the Indian was trying to make peace. This prick decided to stay and not move. Certainly, he could have made any choice. Sandman, a much much younger guy, chose to not move. He was better. He was dominant. He wouldn’t be controlled. He’s also a white kid told from birth that he’s better than everyone else.

by Anonymousreply 72July 16, 2021 3:28 AM

[quote] If a white elderly man walked through a group a black men with only positive wishes and everyone moved aside to let him pass but one kid. Would anyone be saying “Good for him!”?

Because going up to a random stranger, locking eyes with them, and beating a drum in their face is the same as giving them positive wishes. If that were true in his culture, I would think the more respectful thing to do would be to listen to him bang his drum.

by Anonymousreply 75July 16, 2021 4:13 AM

R75, the drumming and chanting was him spreading positivity in his cultural way. I swear, those of you who don't see the smug, pretentious asshole this kid is are blind or are used to acting like him in their own lives so have a vested interest in defending his assholery.

by Anonymousreply 76July 16, 2021 4:17 AM

R76 If that is the case, then what's the problem here? He wasn't being rude just because he doesn't understand the man's culture. No one was trying to stop him from spreading the love in his own cultural way.

by Anonymousreply 77July 16, 2021 4:21 AM

^But based on Phillips own comments in the aftermath, as well as those in his entourage, he did not have any good intentions, despite what it seemed at first.

by Anonymousreply 78July 16, 2021 4:22 AM

In Phillips own words, he was standing up for the Black Israelites who were the aggressors. The media attacked a kid just because they wanted to use the optics to promote racial division. The whole thing was gross.
