Carroll Baker defends Bill Cosby

My initial reaction was...Who's Carroll Baker? It's not like she has a career that she ruined.

by Anonymousreply 64July 14, 2021 12:46 AM

She has had a long career going back decades. God only knows what her reasoning is here, but she’s not exactly an unknown.

Any cinephile, or any person who was around decades ago and even vaguely aware of films and the people who acted in them, would know who she is.

by Anonymousreply 1July 13, 2021 2:35 AM

Now I understand why she was so good in Kindergarten Cop as the evil grandmother.

by Anonymousreply 2July 13, 2021 2:41 AM

I don’t understand the relevance. Did they even work together? Why not ask Linda evans or Michelle Phillips or someone equally as random for their opinion. It may well be that 90 year old baker isn’t all there why involve her in scandal.

by Anonymousreply 3July 13, 2021 2:46 AM

I always thought her fall out with Joseph e Levine was related to harassment but I guess not.

by Anonymousreply 4July 13, 2021 2:49 AM

I wonder if we're going to hear from Debra Paget next.

by Anonymousreply 5July 13, 2021 2:53 AM

I’m shocked that they didn’t ask Joanne Woodward for her comment yet.

by Anonymousreply 6July 13, 2021 2:57 AM

Barbara Nichols is up next?

by Anonymousreply 7July 13, 2021 3:19 AM

R1 obviously started the numerous threads on Baker and after reading the article, the only thing he could come up with was she's well known to the cognoscenti.

by Anonymousreply 8July 13, 2021 3:21 AM

I’ve never started a thread on Baker or ever even commented on her in any capacity here before tonight, R8.

by Anonymousreply 9July 13, 2021 3:25 AM

Carroll Baker is 90 years old this year and doesn't understand the crime and seriousness of drugging and raping over 50 women. Back in the day they blocked this this of thing out and just let it go. She is a product of her time, like Bill Cosby who has still not shown any remorse.

by Anonymousreply 10July 13, 2021 3:26 AM

Carroll Baker is a Hollywood actress. She should know about drugs and sex more than anyone.

by Anonymousreply 11July 13, 2021 3:28 AM

Yes, she’s enjoying dementia.

by Anonymousreply 12July 13, 2021 3:37 AM

One of her better films is “something wild” where she played a rape victim r10

by Anonymousreply 13July 13, 2021 3:40 AM

Yes, Something Wild is great. Very strange ending, too.

by Anonymousreply 14July 13, 2021 3:42 AM

I can only imagine what Arlene Dahl thinks.

by Anonymousreply 15July 13, 2021 3:44 AM

Conversely, Ruta Lee thinks he should have gone to the electric chair.

by Anonymousreply 16July 13, 2021 3:46 AM

I'm hoping that Jane Withers will be able to shed some light on this.

by Anonymousreply 17July 13, 2021 3:46 AM

June Lockhart, please comment.

by Anonymousreply 18July 13, 2021 3:47 AM

Julie Newmar thinks that Cosby is purr-fectly awful!

by Anonymousreply 19July 13, 2021 3:47 AM

Jane Powell posted on Insta it will be a most unusual day if Cosby is convicted.

by Anonymousreply 20July 13, 2021 4:07 AM

Mitzi Gaynor suggests that he washes those women right out of his hair.

by Anonymousreply 21July 13, 2021 4:08 AM
by Anonymousreply 22July 13, 2021 4:14 AM

Well it wasn’t like she put out these comments randomly. She was asked about him on the Hollywood reporters podcast.

Whoever said upthread she’s a product of her time is correct. Though she has said her first husband raped her, baker came up at time when stuff like this happened the first response would be “what did you do to provoke him” or “you shouldn’t have put yourself in this position” or “she’s just mad because she thought if she fucked him he’d give her a part on his show”. It’s a mentality that a lot of women from her generation and older baby boomers have about this. It’s also the it’s just men being men way of thinking as well.

by Anonymousreply 23July 13, 2021 4:15 AM

Carroll Baker now. I don't think she's in any danger from Bill Cosby and his kind.

Please stand by for Pippa Scott's comments...

by Anonymousreply 25July 13, 2021 5:43 AM

Betty White doesn't see the humor in any of this.

by Anonymousreply 26July 13, 2021 5:54 AM

Angela Lansbury never got raped and she's mad about it. She so desperately wanted the film.

by Anonymousreply 27July 13, 2021 6:16 AM

If she thinks it's a fucking sin then why doesn't she leave a country where he was tried and convicted? What a fucking idiot.

by Anonymousreply 28July 13, 2021 8:16 AM

Wow...Carroll Baker...this is like discovering that your great great aunt who disappeard during a trop to new zealand in 1937 is still alive..2 things come to mind 1) Carroll baker admitted to being rude to Marilyn Monroe for no reason other than jealousy upon meeting her at some restaurant back in the day. MM was very gracious and complimented her on her performance (in baby doll I guess, was she ever in anything else of note ?) and Baker said in an interview that she cut her short and said something nasty, MM looked visibly hurt and CB regretted it ever since. 2) Baker was good friends with human ashtray Jimmy Dean and described in another interview how they would all be horrible to Natalie Wood, durind the shooting of RWAC, bullying her, taunting her, making her cry etc, because of her "hollywood princess " status, and they were actors studio and felt they shat higher than anyone else and all that.. She observed that Natalie was visibly in awe of Dean and kind of smitten, and would often be completely lost and bewildered by the nasty abuse, as she was a complete sweetheart, and didn't understand what she'd done. It was everyhting, her lack of talent, her lack of intelligence etc down to her clothes. the better she tried to dress, the crueler they were etc..She was 15 yo remember ? Baker said she stopped when she realized how cruel Dean was to her, how hurt Natalie was and later in the 60's she observed how beautiful Natalie looked as a young woman, and how graceful and nice she was.

So Carroll Baker is a CUNT. Who's commenting next on the cosby saga ??? Sue Lyon ???

by Anonymousreply 29July 13, 2021 9:34 AM

R29 did Carroll admit those things herself or is it from some biography? Sounds rather strange to be so rude to someone paying you a compliment and also the Natalie wood stuff. I’d read that baker was a top contender for the role of Judy in rebel and was probably the preferred choice of Jimmy dean.

by Anonymousreply 31July 13, 2021 10:28 AM

it's herself in two different written interviews, she said she was a bit obnoxious, and actually insecure when she arrived in Hollywood, and thought they were better than anyone else, being "serious " actors fro the studio, and that she regretted being such a brat

by Anonymousreply 32July 13, 2021 10:29 AM

it was very detailed as I remember. She said that one day Natalie arrived to hang out with them, in a beautiful gown ,jewells and makeup because they had told her she was too square and shamed them, and they laughed to her face and told her she looked disguised and was it her mum's clothes, and so on, and Nat cried, and Dean laughed...and later in the 60's she was at a costume ball, and all the great beauties were there, and the most beautiful of them all was little Natalie with her vanilla complexion and huge chocolate eyes, It was detaied like that, and she was in a native american costume (oups) and looked drop dead gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 33July 13, 2021 10:35 AM

Fuck CarrolI, I like Diane Baker better anyway.

by Anonymousreply 34July 13, 2021 11:22 AM

I tried to watch Baby Doll once but turned it off after 15 minutes, it was too much…Karl Malden, it was creepy. Something Wild, was a very odd film that I saw when I was a kid on the afternoon movie and never forgot.

by Anonymousreply 35July 13, 2021 12:05 PM

Old sins have very long shadows......,Cosby is a serial rapist .....there is nothing anyone can say that can change that fact.

by Anonymousreply 36July 13, 2021 12:24 PM

[quote]Who's commenting next on the cosby saga ??? Sue Lyon ???

Only if the DL-er who brought Lois Nettleton back to us has his Ouija board handy.

by Anonymousreply 37July 13, 2021 5:29 PM

{quote]in baby doll I guess, was she ever in anything else of note ?

Giant. The Big Country. How The West Was Won. Cheyenne Autumn. The Carpetbaggers. Harlow. The Watcher In The Woods. Star 80. Ironweed. Kindergarten Cop.

by Anonymousreply 38July 13, 2021 5:47 PM

Where’s that thread about people you’re shocked are still alive?

by Anonymousreply 39July 13, 2021 6:26 PM

R39, well her career died decades ago.

by Anonymousreply 40July 13, 2021 7:13 PM

I thought she was great in “baby doll” and I rather liked the film itself, it was pretty funny when taken as a dark comedy about sexual repression.

by Anonymousreply 41July 13, 2021 7:18 PM

Cracker Barrel defends Bill Cosby??

by Anonymousreply 42July 13, 2021 7:19 PM

Her assumption that any Black man accused of preying on a white woman MUST be innocent is so forward thinking for 1960.

by Anonymousreply 43July 13, 2021 7:22 PM

Yes, let's follow the opinions of this lump.

I hope Eva Marie saint doesn’t get asked to comment. I love her and would hate her to tarnish her reputation by making a controversial statement.

by Anonymousreply 45July 13, 2021 7:27 PM

Has Debette Goldry weighed in on this yet?

by Anonymousreply 46July 13, 2021 7:28 PM

R45 women who behave or dress in a certain way , you'll attract certain reactions, it's the nature of things, therefore women should be careful not to put themselves in compromising situations . If you dress like a nurse, someone will ask for medical care, if you dress like a whore, somebody will want ...you know what, and take it from you" . Eva MS

by Anonymousreply 47July 13, 2021 7:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 50July 13, 2021 7:47 PM

These people who make comments about people asking for it because of the way that they dress should be made to watch “irreversible” and then asked their opinion. What simple, sheltered, black & white world do they live in where they actually think that.

by Anonymousreply 51July 13, 2021 7:59 PM

[quote]it was pretty funny when taken as a dark comedy about sexual repression

It *was* a dark comedy about sexual repression.

by Anonymousreply 52July 13, 2021 8:39 PM

by Anonymousreply 54July 13, 2021 8:50 PM

Eva Marie Saint just seemed like a more successful version of Marian Moses, like Margot Robbie is to Jaime Pressly. Not that has this anything to do with the topic at hand.

What would her daughter Blanche say? Blanche had a little career going with Holocaust, French Postcards, and playing Molly Ringwald's marrying sister in Sixteen Candles, but she married and began having kids (6) and put her career on the back burner.

by Anonymousreply 56July 13, 2021 10:57 PM

I think Eva had a point. If you know that men are going to assume you're a whore if you dress like one, why would you go out of your way to dress like a whore? As she says, "It's the nature of things." If she was saying this is more likely to get you raped, then that's debatable. I'm not exactly sure what she was saying, though.

by Anonymousreply 57July 13, 2021 11:42 PM

You're not sure what she was saying but you think she had a point. Ok.

by Anonymousreply 58July 13, 2021 11:51 PM

R57 that's sounds insane.

by Anonymousreply 59July 14, 2021 12:16 AM

R59 What's insane is this whole playing dumb thing where you're supposed to think the way a woman dresses has nothing to do with how she's treated. Or shouldn't have anything to do with it. It's counterintuitive. People have preconceived notions about looks and clothes and makeup. It's human nature, you can't change it because someone thinks it's unfair.

by Anonymousreply 60July 14, 2021 12:26 AM

Eva Marie Saint was unaffected and very lovely looking when she was young. She looked nothing like that tough drag queen posted above.

When Natalie Merchant puts you in a lyric, you know that you're an intelligent kind of pretty.

by Anonymousreply 61July 14, 2021 12:32 AM

[quote]My initial reaction was...Who's Carroll Baker? It's not like she has a career that she ruined.

She ruined it way back in the 1960s with "The Carpetbaggers" and "Harlow."

by Anonymousreply 62July 14, 2021 12:37 AM

Harlow?

by Anonymousreply 63July 14, 2021 12:42 AM

Yes, Carol at R63, "Harlow." The big-budget version, not your film shot for $4.98 in somebody's backyard.
