Cherish - Madonna

"Cherish" is a song by American singer Madonna from her fourth studio album, Like a Prayer (1989). It was written and produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard, and was released by Sire Records as the album's third single on August 1, 1989.

"Cherish" was promoted by a black-and-white music video that was directed by Herb Ritts and was filmed on July 22, 1989 at Paradise Cove Beach in Malibu, California. In the video, Madonna plays herself, while three co-actors dressed as mermen swim in and out of the sea. Academics noted that the mermen became symbols for the homosexual community and the oppression it faced.

I'm not a Madonna fan, but I've always like this song.

No, actually when you say "Cherish" to a DLer, this is the only song they know.

(And sorry, Madonna's "Cherish" can't compare...)

[quote]The video was conceptualized by Ritts, who wanted to portray mermen in their natural habitat, but Madonna baulked at the idea since she wanted to be portrayed as herself, but keep the mermen also. Four male performers were signed for this, one of them being Tony Ward who would become Madonna's boyfriend later, with the other three being water polo players from nearby Pepperdine University

You gotta admit that mermen were hot.

Weirdly, their names would actually take work to find as most articles simply refer to them as waterpolo players from Pepperdine.

Wasn't Tony Ward one of the mermen r6?

Stop talking about this unevolved hollow demon of a human. Look at her now! She’s a fucking monstrosity of boundless narcissism and sociopathy and worst of all… she’s dumb.

by Anonymousreply 9October 31, 2022 3:20 AM

You’re silly, r5.

by Anonymousreply 10October 31, 2022 3:23 AM

R9, isn't it better to bump these threads from the better days? Let's focus on the positive.

This song always reminds me of My Own Private Idaho.

by Anonymousreply 12October 31, 2022 3:27 AM

I bought the single but Cherish isn't really one of her better efforts. Almost sounds like a throwaway song.

by Anonymousreply 13October 31, 2022 3:28 AM

Give me faith, give me joy my boy, I will always cherish you!

by Anonymousreply 14October 31, 2022 3:30 AM

I like a lot of Madonna songs from the 80s and 90s, but this one of them that I didn't care for. And the Like A Prayer album is probably my favorite album of hers overall.

It hit #2 in both Sales and Airplay in October 1989. People forget how big this album was in 1989.

Top 5 October 7, 1989:

1. Janet - Miss You Much

2. Madonna - Cherish

3. Milli Vanilli - Girl I'm Gonna Miss You

4. Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time

5. Warrant - Heaven

Yes, Tony Ward is the only one whose name is ever mentioned. You'd think that someone somewhere would identify the others.

I suppose you could cross reference the Pepperdine waterpolo team and see which ones appear to resemble the ones in the video, but c'mon.

Didn’t Herb Ritz shoot this video, IIRC?

One of my favorite Madonna songs.

When I was a gayling, the mermen were the hottest thing I could imagine. Evidently the suits worked super well - the guys could swim faster than they anticipated while wearing them, which led to one of the models winding up nearly a mile off shore during a "test drive".

Tony Ward was odd-looking but somehow classically so - he resembled a Roman bust of the pre-Augustinian age, where a prominent aquiline nose was symbolic of resolute character. And what a magnificent body.

The silvery tones and spare design of the video heralded the end of the garishness that 80s style had degenerated into—soon followed by Herb Ritts's video for Janet Jackson's "Love Will Never Do" and Bruce Weber's magazine supplement for Calvin Klein jeans (with Marcus Schenkenberg among others). New style accompanied, inevitably, by a new homoeroticism.

R20 Pic, Tony Ward was a beautiful young man with a very sexy body, his dick is fine in that photo, I'd still have so much fun with it, and the rest of him...

The video freaked me out. She looked like Ellen!
