I think Ian had a somewhat spartan love life when he was younger. By his own admission, he was a late bloomer. Perhaps in his old age, he's more relaxed about being gay (no need to worry about being arrested) and enjoys multiple partners to make up for lost time.

Ian McKellen has confessed in interviews that he had a big crush on the red haired Derek Jacobi at Cambridge University but nothing came of it.

My friend works in theatre land in London and has known Derek Jacobi and his partner for nearly 20 years. He says they are utterly unshowbiz, and basically just ordinary folk (albeit rather well-off ordinary folk), and that they are completely besotted with each other in such a way that you can’t help but find endearing.

Said friend has worked with loads of actor-royalty, but remains studiously discreet even after the application of large amounts of alcohol. Vexing.

Jacobi is the better actor in my opinion.
