India

Why has India never been able to pull themselves up to first world status? People entering the country still have to have shots. And in some of the areas, they still don't have basic sanitation. Did the British influence keep them from progressing? While Britain was moving towards socialism and things like NHS, was India to poor to do so? Are they really such a poor country and is there government malfeasance like in Greece? What holds them back?

by Anonymousreply 531March 14, 2023 6:17 AM

Well they have made progress. I don't really know, maybe China's authoritarianism is better for growth. Anyway, I'd rather see India than China.

Yes.

Wow what a great thread for DL. I'll contribute after after I finish my pithy but insightful posts to "How do I fry a hamburger?" and "How to make ice tea" threads.

by Anonymousreply 3July 11, 2021 11:00 PM

Actually, I think it's an interesting question. I don't know the answer and I also don't know if economic growth or prosperity should be the sole measure of a society's success.

by Anonymousreply 4July 11, 2021 11:02 PM

[quote] I also don't know if economic growth or prosperity should be the sole measure of a society's success.

I think we can agree that proper sanitation and not having to shit in a ditch and wipe with leaves or your hand is a step forward.

by Anonymousreply 5July 11, 2021 11:05 PM

The western democracies didn't become economic powerhouses overnight. It took a couple of centuries. There was massive poverty in the U.S. at the beginning of the 20th century, even before the Depression.

I spent 6 months in India in 1980. There was no infrastructure for anything -- phone, electricity, plumbing, etc. And there was no industry to pay for it. Plus, a huge part of the population was illiterate. The tech industry has been a huge boon to India, and I've been told they have made enormous progress even in the past few decades.

I doubt that the average Indian is worse off than the average person living in China.

by Anonymousreply 6July 11, 2021 11:14 PM

[quote]Did the British influence keep them from progressing?

It's the only reason they have progressed. They're WAY too religious and religion hampers development.

by Anonymousreply 7July 11, 2021 11:14 PM

India, like the Middle East, like Africa, the Philippines, etc., was drawn up by colonial powers from a patchwork of tribes speaking different languages, adhering to different customs, many competing, fighting for the same resources, land, religious influence, etc. It has taken decades, centuries to build a united India, and not always successfully because factionalism continues to exist, which derails a united goal towards progress.

by Anonymousreply 8July 11, 2021 11:15 PM

R7, whatever else they did, the British gave Indians the great gift of the English language. There would be no tech boom if all educated Indians weren't able to speak English at least fairly well, while the upper-middle and upper classes are entirely fluent and thus able to deal with people all over the world with no linguistic impediment.

An interesting question is why the Philippines, where English is also universal among the educated classes (thanks to Yanks, not Brits this time), has not seen the level of advancement that India has achieved in the last few decades.

by Anonymousreply 9July 12, 2021 12:02 AM

Too goddamn many people.

by Anonymousreply 10July 12, 2021 1:34 AM

R9, Post-war Philippines was well on its way to economic prosperity. It was 2nd only to Japan among the East Asian nations in GDP. However, other nations like Singapore and Taiwan began to rise and surpass the Philippines under Ferdinand Marcos' regime. Then in 1972, under the guise of a Communist threat from the East and a Muslim threat from the South, Marcos declared martial law, ruled for the next 14 years, and the economy collapsed while the Marcoses and their cronies looted the treasury and spent the people's money on extravagant vanity projects and tributes to self. A disciplined, democratic society descended into one where corruption, graft, and bribery became the norm. After four decades, these have become hard habits to break.

Unbelievable levels of bureaucracy for the most mundane tasks. Tons of corruption. Classism on a level that is unimaginable. Regional and religious conflicts. Over population. Superstition. Lack of rights or equality for women.

Countries thrive only when there is a large middle class, which requires some focus on the average citizen and making their lives better. India's middle class is growing, but it's still small.

60% of Indians live in poverty as defined by the World Bank - less than $3/day. The top 1% in India owns 58% of the wealth - which is extremely unbalanced even compared to the US, where the top 1% own 37%. Again - this goes back to extreme classism and that poor people should stay poor as that was their lot in life and needed to repay for things they did wrong in previous lives.

by Anonymousreply 12July 12, 2021 6:05 AM

R12 - 75% of Indians live in villages and typically still do hard labor. 35% are illiterate.

And besides everything I stated in my above posts, people will still point to England and other European colonizers as the reason they're in this state still. It gives the wealthy and powerful a way of dismissing the problems and blaming it on someone else instead of looking at each other.

by Anonymousreply 13July 12, 2021 6:13 AM

[quote]Nearly 55% of the Indian population is expected to join the ranks of the middle class. In fact, because India's demographics are much younger compared to China and the US, India's middle class could be the largest in the world (in terms of numbers of people) by 2025

Just like Yugoslavia it shouldn't be a country after WW2. Tamils in the south shared no similarities whatsoever with the Sikh in Punjab nor the Christians in Nagaland and Mizoram with the HIndu-nationalist government in Delhi.. How do you even govern a country with a 22 official languages ?

It should be an autonomous federation like the EU.

The British Empire was broken up much too hastily because of The Marshall Plan, I think India would be radically different if the withdrawal had been more phased over a longer period of time.

by Anonymousreply 28July 12, 2021 10:17 PM

r26 India needed nuclear weapons to protect itself from Pakistan, China, its archenemies which possess nuclear weapons. India fought wars with almost all of its neighbors. Pakistan, China, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka (Tamils-Sinhalese issue). It's like Israel in that all its neighbors want to see it suffer. No wonder it needed to invest a lot in military and security. That's no excuse for its lack of development . It's a miracle that India which have people with vastly different ethnicities, languages, races, cultures, religions is still able to survive as one country without breaking up. There is a lot of ignorance in this thread.

There's no right answer for England's departure. England was bankrupt after WW2 - it didn't have the time, political will or frankly money to keep it going for many years more. And they weren't wanted in India anymore - Independence was in the air no matter what.

by Anonymousreply 38July 13, 2021 1:58 AM

R38 - don't think that Europeans were the only ones who colonized - far from it. That's a very "blame it all on Europeans" approach - and it just doesn't work.

You act like everyone else would have lived in harmony and other countries wouldn't have invaded and colonized each other - which is exactly what has happened for thousands of years.

R42 The main condition of The Marshall Plan for UK aid post WWII was Indian independence ASAP.

That caused the speed and carnage in the Indian Subcontinent, The UK would have starved without the funds.

The Partition of India is the biggest regret of The British Empire.

R47 - the Atlantic Charter was agreed to in 1941, which laid out plans for decolonization - with the understanding that neither America nor UK would take any territories after the war and that all people will have the choice of self-governing.

Don't act like it was all America's doing - it was agreed to before hand, and India was just one of the pieces.

by Anonymousreply 50July 13, 2021 2:29 AM

by Anonymousreply 51July 13, 2021 2:31 AM

And Nixon was just fine with 6-10 million refugees coming into India from Bangladesh when Pakistan attacked Bangladesh (East Pakistan at the time).

Indira Gandhi kept asking Nixon and Kissinger to intervene as The US was a Pakistan ally. Nixon, however, used the Pakistan Prime Minister as a go-between in negotiations with China, so refused to tell Pakistan to stop the attack.

by Anonymousreply 57July 13, 2021 2:40 AM

R53 - that's bullshit - yes there WAS a history of conflict, way before the English arrived. That theory has been dismissed as just wanting to blame everything on England.

by Anonymousreply 59July 13, 2021 2:44 AM

The Brits destroyed India’s textile industry and then forced them to provide raw materials which brought India little return. They worsened an already bad caste system by simply inserting themselves on top. They developed almost nothing in the Raj to benefit the great masses of Indian society. The British Empire was like a plague of locusts robbing non-industrialized nations, destroying their economies and governments. They created states based upon their needs and could care less about putting opposing ethnic groups into the same State. The British were the next to worst colonial power. The Belgian Congo was the absolute worst.

Some of your statements are just hyperbole - 'destroying their economies and government' - as if there were centralized, developed economies and governments already in place.

No one likes to be invaded - but it has happened throughout history time and time again. It's always easy to paint this fictionalized account of how great places were before Europeans came - as if they were all peace-loving and equitable and lives were so AWESOME before the European devils arrived.

Unfortunately, that just is not true. And there were some benefits from European colonization. It was a mixed bag, like anything.

Some fascinating discussion here, but back to the burning question. WHY THE PUBLIC SHITTING? Is this prevalent in other countries? My uncle traveled all over the world, nothing really shocked him, but he could never understand the casual "drop trou", essentially right where you stand, to take a shit the moment the urge strikes. He saw this in all of India and most of China. Why? Especially given these countries have at least a functional knowledge of the importance of hygiene. It's like they know, but don't give a fuck. How hard is it to build public latrines at the very least?

Can someone please explain this who's been there, or, even better, lived there for a period of time? My uncle popped his clogs so I can't ask him, and he didn't understand it himself.

R77 - the sources on that need to be checked. Britain only formerly ruled India from 1858 to 1947 - 90 years. They also put in a lot of money into India, building an extensive railroad, government, port and communications infrastructure worth hundreds of billions.

Look - the British did some dirty shit in India - particularly the Bengal famine under Churchill. But they weren't 100% evil.

There's a phrase that nationalism is built on shame - overcoming an enemy, etc. There's only so much you can blame England for - but you have to start looking around at yourselves and ask what's going on NOW.

India is 74 years post-England rule, close to the same amount of time that England formally ruled India.

R72 notions about hygiene and manners are historically fairly new to the West. While the Romans did have public latrines, shitting was very social and there was no privacy or gender segregation except maybe for the very wealthy. Farting, belching and burping were all welcomed at the dining table into the Early Modern period if I recall. People often brushed their teeth with urine and clothes were “washed” in urine (from public pisspots). As late as the Depression era most Americans rarely bathed: one a week on Sat night before Church was pretty typical. Some folks went months and years without a full bath. I suspect that in India, traditional notions of excreting perhaps hold sway amongst the poor and less educated classes just as here in the US Deplorables are known to urinate in odd places-especially when drunk.

R69, the reason why that Wiki page is laughably inaccurate is that it lists every conflict that occurred when Muslim invaders came to conquer parts if India as a Hindu-Muslim conflict.

Most were conqueror-native conflicts that had little to do with religion and much to do with outside aggressors trying to overtake a country and people in that country resisting.

by Anonymousreply 91July 13, 2021 4:39 PM

R69, interesting how that list ends in 1205.

So there were no significant Muslim/Hindu clashes again until the Brits came in the 1850's. That points to Brits inciting a rivalry.

"In a new research project carried out jointly with Roberto Foa at the University of Melbourne, we critique this rather truncated and romanticised view of the origins of Hindu-Muslim conflict. Using a new historical dataset of religious violence, we argue that the construction of religious identities and the origins of religious conflict in India are not colonial but precolonial processes, dating especially to the 17th-century battles between Aurangzeb and Shivaji."

R108's video is unsubstantiated and overblown. The industrial revolution in UK was preceded and made possible by the Agricultural Revolution of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Plus there were large technological advancements and COAL and a huge maritime and trading network to sell products.

Yes, profits were extracted from India as well as ALL of their colonies, but to say it was all on the backs of India is absurd.

What's stopping India from making their people literate NOW? Health care? Clean water? They have the means to do so, but so much of the money is tied up in the 1% that nothing happens.

India has the 3rd highest number of billionaires behind US and China. That's not counting the centi-millionaires or even those with over $10 million in assets.

But sure - blame England for their 90 year rule over 100 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 118July 16, 2021 6:43 PM

R117 - no stupid - no one is saying that the British didn't extract from its colonies. It's fun to pretend all of India's problems are because of the British.

The resources the English took - tea, jute, rubber, textiles - these are all agricultural crops and industries. The crops are still there - so why weren't they capitalized on after Independence?

Partition and its aftermath were part of an unfortunate trend that saw ethnic cleansing happen in areas where people from different religions, ethnic and national groups had lived in close proximity, if not always, harmony, for centuries.

Eastern Europe, India and, more recently, the Middle East were all far less mono-ethnic than they are today.

It's that whole nation-state thing.

R119, the British destroyed much of Indian industry. It took raw materials from Indian (including cotton) and resold it back to India as loomed products.

According to the article attached:

“At the beginning of the 18th century, India's share of the world economy was 23 percent, as large as all of Europe put together, but by the time the British were kicked out of India in 1947, it had dropped to less than 4 percent, according to the BBCl

R122 - YES - But there were massive changes GLOBALLY between the beginning of the 18th century (1700) and 1948. The rise of the United States, Canada, Spanish colonies, industrial revolution, technological advancements.

It's not like India would have stayed with that 24% share of the economy - everybody else was catching up and other countries were coming on to the scene.

The $45 trillion dollar figure is based on a Marxist economist and needs more scrutiny. Yes, large amounts of goods and services and wealth were extracted from India - that's what you do with colonies - but this doesn't paint the entire picture.

It's lazy and intellectually dishonest to fingerpoint at England and blame it all on them. Total and complete bullshit. It's all about making an enemy and a scapegoat - it's politically good for the Indian elite that people promote this idea, otherwise they'd have to answer for their subjugation of their fellow citizens and hoarding of extreme wealth.

by Anonymousreply 162July 17, 2021 6:33 PM

I live in a city with a lot of Indian immigrants and many of them reek of BO. It’s really offensive to me because I feel like that’s not fair to others who have to share public spaces with you. I’m not talking natural smells I mean full fledged Bo from sweating. It’s selfish and easily remedied. I’m just wondering if they at least have some kind of justification for it. I know they can afford it.

by Anonymousreply 163July 17, 2021 6:42 PM

I work with several Indians and I don't recall ever smelling offensive BO. However, when I go to the local 7-11 run by Pakistanis, the BO hits you hard as you enter. For many South Asians, the wearing of deodorant is simply not part of their culture, that it is a Western thing. And if you look at who the biggest consumers of deodorants and antiperspirants are, it is overwhelmingly Americans. For many cultures, simply bathing and keeping clean, and maybe spritzing some cologne or perfume is enough.

by Anonymousreply 166July 17, 2021 7:27 PM

R134, that’s funny because Indian English accents are easier to understand than Filipino English accents. There’s something off about the cadence of some Filipino-accented English that makes it hard to follow. It’s not mispronunciation of words per se; it's that the rise-and-fall of their speech is not normal English. It’s like they don’t stress the right words in a sentence or pause in the right place. At it’s worst, the speech sounds chirpy and mechanical.

Indians, on the other hand, are easy to understand, even when they have a strong accent.

Or did you mean to imply that people are prejudiced against Indians, so the accent is a problem for companies for reasons unrelated to understandability? That would be unfortunately.

Best solution: Bring the jobs back to the US and pay a decent fucking wage.

Indians and other South Indians tends to have strong BO due to their diet with lots of spice which naturally metabolized in their sweat. This made worse by observant Hindus whom regularly smeared their body with oil and ash as part of their daily praying ritual. My brother used to have an Indian tenant with an odor exactly like shit. Seem he wasn't aware about this because this is the first he lived with a non Indian.

by Anonymousreply 199July 29, 2021 10:29 PM

Yes, cousin marriage is pretty much a Pakistani thing, not and Indian thing. At least not a Hindu Indian thing.

By the way, to a poster or two upthread, "South Indian" and "South Asian" are NOT interchangeable terms.

"South Asian" refers to all the countries of the entire subcontinent+: India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Maldives.

South Indian strictly means people from southern India, from the southern part of the country. Indians from the northern half of the country are different from Indians in the southern part-- different food, different cultures, different languages, different beliefs. But India's differences are baked in as the people have been there for thousands of years. I'm not been sure they're in the same haplogroup, I know they have different genetic makeup.

A person wouldn't call someone from the southern region of the US a South American, right?

Finally, South Asian and Southeast Asian are also not the same thing. I'm not sure anyone in this thread has called South Asia 'Southeast Asia' but I hear it all the time from people who should know better: people on public broadcasting, etc. Southeast Asia is of course, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc.

One issue is that they have an elite class that thinks they’re much smarter than they are. IQs matter.

by Anonymousreply 223July 30, 2021 10:50 PM

R222 - he clearly meant inefficiency.

R217 - no - believe it or not, the caste system is WORSE than systematic racism. Much worse.

by Anonymousreply 224July 31, 2021 12:49 AM

Yes, the caste system is akin to slavery forced upon Africans in the US. It is one of the reasons India will never stop being a cesspool of 1.5 billion souls, half of which have no access to toilets.

by Anonymousreply 225July 31, 2021 1:55 AM

R224 thank you. It was obviously a typo as you point out but as r222 has nothing else to say, leave him be.

R215 - r217 too need not just to read but to comprehend. Wiseass responses of no substance like r222. Clever, not smart.

See, OP didn't ask to compare shithole India with other shitholes. Or say it was the only shithole. His question was why India was such a shithole (our word, not his), a question I answered from my experience.

Oh I can give more examples of what is holding the country back. For now, let us say it also includes silly defensive attitudes like r222 and r215-217.

There is some DNA evidence connecting South Indian and Sri Lankan populations with Australian Aborigines, particularly tribes from North-Western of Australia around Broome. I have seen some people living there who I just assumed were native Australians until they spoke with an Indian accent. The Sri Lankan Vedda tribe is very close physically and culturally to the North West Aborigines. One big difference is the way non-native children are taught, Sri Lankan children, in particular, are highly respectful to adults and are well mannered to a fault, whereas Australian Aboriginal children are unruly little shits.

by Anonymousreply 235August 1, 2021 6:12 AM

R242 of course you don't "understand" as you have nothing of substance to say! Deceitfulness is an habit sometimes ingrained in a culture like in India :)

by Anonymousreply 236August 1, 2021 6:57 AM

In my teens a missionary to Calcutta came to my then church. The way he spoke of the people was so degrading and insulting I walked out of his slide show. Colonial thinking coupled with the absurd claim the “heathens” desperately need the to save them.

He was a true ahole. How, his son, a beautiful guy with a truly wonderful spirit. Took him out for burgers. We chatted like.old friends until the place closed. Not wanting to end our time together we walked and chatted for miles. He was as much in puppy love as me. We both cried when they left.

A true kindred soul. Btw, he hated living in India - Tim loved Indian culture and people. He HATED being forced to be a part of scam his parents were runny at the expense of locals.

by Anonymousreply 242August 1, 2021 3:46 PM

The Caste system isn't anything unique, it's why the British confused it with the 'Class' system. Every society has an underclass.

For Greeks it's The Turks, for Romanians it's the Gypsies, even the people of Cabo Verde look down on the Senegalese. It's a basic human trait and if you eliminated it between races then something else will fill that space.

by Anonymousreply 243August 1, 2021 4:08 PM

My roommate was from Bihar, which I gather is the armpit of India. But it is in the north and he thought he was completely superior to the southerners. He said they looked like devils. I mentioned someone from the south and he said, "Oh, that black fellow?", while he himself was very dark.

by Anonymousreply 244August 1, 2021 5:58 PM

R243, no one said it’s unique.

That said, it’s still enforced through violence in rural areas. That’s somewhat rare, albeit perhaps not unique.

r256 That is clearly a skull of a toddler ( with rotting eyeballs ). In Hinduism babies and children are considered "pure" so there is no need for their cremation. Since burial is too expensive for most in India throwing the bodies into the river makes sense.

r257 Decades ago China was similar to India in many ways. Both were huge overpopulated country with mostly poor farmers and a society obsessed with religion and superstitions. Chinese Communist Party despite all its fault managed to control their population growth and cut off their society reliance on superstitions something that democratic Indian so far have failed to do. Not to say China is perfect but you surely wont find any Chinese throwing the body of their own dead child into the river or smearing their body with cow shit due to "tradition".

It's been shown that the best way to lift people out of poverty are to provide opportunities for women, and to end discrimination against them. As seen itt India is downright dangerous for women, as compared to Communist China which at least purports equality of the sexes. Birth control obviously helps, as it's easier for women to have more economic opportunities with one child as opposed to seven (or more).

R259 The difference is that China is controlled and run by the majority Han ethnicity, which subjugates the other non-Chinese people, like Tibetans, Mongols etc. It's multi-ethnic, but one group dominates all the others. India is the opposite, no order at all, it's a melting pot where no one is able to control anything because of Western democracy and humanitarianism. R259 How is burial expensive in India. Among the Muslim population, they only do burials, but they’re low cost or usually free. Their population sees it as a community duty and a point of honor.

Face it, the majority of Indians are filthy and unhygienic. Between the rat temple and drinking cow piss, it’s one gross thing after another. It’s one thing being cluttered, it’s another bathing happily with putrid, liquified corpses. That takes the cake.

by Anonymousreply 297August 4, 2021 8:55 PM

Yeah, we can R326. No matter what issues you raise about what is wrong in the US, it is nowhere on the scale of India or other 3rd world countries and there are mechanisms to resolve them. You are completely clueless. There are many reasons why millions of people doing anything they can to get here and other 1st world countries. If you are too stupid too see the reasons or so blinded by ideology, that's on you.

by Anonymousreply 351August 5, 2021 5:06 PM

All of the Indians are getting their panties in a bunch here the minute anyone dares to criticize the cesspool known as India. Heaven forbid you discuss their social maladies lest you be labeled “a Pakistani.” Oh no, how awful! How will I survive, snort!

But, but, but America has homeless people too!!!

I stand by my belief that nothing compares to the level of filth seen in India. Next superpower, eh? Maybe instead of wasting money on nukes and a space program, they should get toilets for all and proper corpse disposal. Just sayin’…

by Anonymousreply 352August 5, 2021 5:23 PM

It so interesting the way they intermittently wobble their heads from side to side when speaking.

by Anonymousreply 353August 5, 2021 5:25 PM

R351 gosh I didn’t realize there were “mechanisms to resolve them”!!! Tell me, what are the mechanisms in place to get the 550,000 homeless people off the streets? What mechanisms are in place to curb the corporations creating massive climate change which is drastically affecting the entire US west coast? What mechanisms are in place for healthcare for the citizens? What mechanisms are in place to make sure you don’t end up with a nightmare Donald trump type president again? Because I haven’t seen anything change girl haha.

by Anonymousreply 354August 5, 2021 5:45 PM

And R351 I agree the scale of problems is worse in India, however the US has the resources and India doesn’t. So while India’s problems can be understood in the context of poverty, the US does not have that excuse. It’s embarrassing - that’s why you shouldn’t cast judgment. As long as the US has it’s own problems (which it doesn’t have to - it just doesn’t have the political will to change) it’s hypocritical, dysfunctional but mainly totally stupid to make fun of a poverty stricken country for having problems of its own. And even if it did have problems it’s still dumb to criticize those less fortunate. Does that make sense? Save your judgment for your own house’s failings. Go lobby your local politicians to do something about the housing crisis or the environmentally crisis rather than waste your time on here making fun of Indians. Pathetic. Can you imagine you as a child thinking this was who you were going to grow up to be?

by Anonymousreply 355August 5, 2021 5:54 PM

But it doesn't actually matter whether the U.S. has its problems r355. India still needs to get its shit together (literally, apparently) and stop pretending it's still some poor little colony oh so exploited. Fuck that noise and figure out why women are treated like garbage in your country and stop doing it. Start there.

You are correct that the West has its own problems and isn't actually going to solve India's. That much is true. But that doesn't mean India has to just accept shitty government, shitty bureaucracy, shitty corruption, shitty businessmen, religious bullshit or anything else.

by Anonymousreply 356August 5, 2021 5:58 PM

R355 LIVES for whataboutism - he's all over this thread trashing America's problems as if that's even relevant for a discussion about why India hasn't pulled itself up to first world status.

He's pathetic - not offering anything but criticism of everyone else. Hopefully that's not the asshole type your mother wanted their child to grow up to be either.

R355 Baby, there’s American poor and then there’s Indian poor.

The good thing about America is that it has social safety net programs (food stamps, SSI, county medical care, section 8 housing, free education, etc). Though they are far from perfect, they are a boon to those who wish to utilize them. As far as homelessness goes, the reality is the majority of the homeless are mentally ill or addicts. This is why you don’t see families living in tents or children begging in the streets. There are resources available to those who want them and can follow the rules. This is also why droves of people come from places like India…even if you’re “poor” in the US, most likely you’ll have food in your belly and a roof over your head. Not the best, but something adequate.

Contrast that with India, where young children begging and prostituting is a common sight, where women and girls are systematically gang raped, where “dalits” have no chance of upward mobility and are tortured on a regular basis. A place where the government has utterly failed its people with its gross obsession with Pakistan, with its brinksmanship with China (really, India?!), and this false belief that a few call centers and computer factories will make it the next superpower. Start with the basics. As the so-called largest democracy in the world, why are you keeping untouchables down? Why don’t you spend your money on basic sanitation and clean water? How about ending the caste system?

As a child, did you ever think you’d be defending India so blindly at the expense of the destitute and the innocent? Jai Hind (if you’re in the top 1%)!

by Anonymousreply 361August 5, 2021 7:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 380August 6, 2021 2:29 AM

R379 You are technically homeless in a Western Country if you live in a well appointed shelter (sometimes even a Hotel or Motel).

'No Fixed Abode' doesn't mean that you are sleeping on the streets, we have a different definition.

by Anonymousreply 381August 6, 2021 2:43 AM

Awww R381 well if you say it that way it just sounds glamorous and it’s clearly not even a problem! You’re a shithead x

by Anonymousreply 382August 6, 2021 2:52 AM

R382 Children are removed or placed in temporary accommodation with their parents as soon as the authorities become aware.

I'm not sure I'd regard living in a motel/hotel or shelter for month's on end as 'Glamorous', it sounds like hell to me?

They remain technically homeless until they attain a permanent residence.

We have a long history (150+ years) of not allowing that kind of shit to happen in most Western Countries.

by Anonymousreply 383August 6, 2021 3:16 AM

by Anonymousreply 385August 6, 2021 3:49 AM

R384 We have a different definition of Homelessnes.

You could spend many years in secure temporary accommodation and still be judged to be homeless.

It's not an ideal situation that any Country offers, but it's pragmatic, caring , less cruel and not barbaric on the whole.

by Anonymousreply 386August 6, 2021 5:04 AM

R416 The caste system is as old as the world. It comes from the Indo-Europeans and the Vedic tradition back from 3000 BC back when the Aryans moved from the steppes to Europe, India and Iran. If anything British and Western influence are the reason why it's now abolished in the Constiution and many, many Indians don't consider it anymore for marriage etc, especially in big cities and industrialized areas. That's why Hindutva hate so much Christians and Muslims, because their values are the total opposite, with the latter two being in favor or an egalitarian approach under one God.

Foreign automakers have found it difficult to gain a foothold in the value-conscious Indian market dominated by Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.’s cheap cars. The government’s high tax regime, which imposes levies as high as 28% on gasoline vehicles, has also been a major roadblock. Toyota Motor Corp. last year said it won’t expand further in India due to high tariffs, while Harley-Davidson Inc. has exited the market. General Motors Co. pulled out in 2017.

Ford India had a market share of just 1.42% in August, compared with 1.9% a year ago, data from Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations showed. The local units of Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp. and South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co. together control more than 60% of the market.

The retreat by Ford is a further blow to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make-in-India program, which encourages companies to manufacture locally. Tesla Inc. has urged Modi’s administration to allow it to import cars more cheaply before it commits to setting up a factory in the country.

Ford was one of the first global car companies to enter India when the economy opened up in the early 1990s. The company first set up shop in 1926 but shut down its initial operation in the 1950s.

Nowadays you can become a certified forecaster! If someone tells the Indians this, they may might do better.

by Anonymousreply 476September 11, 2021 4:22 PM

Forgot where I read this, but something like: in their culture, only the lowest caste can clean a toilet. They either think it's nasty to defecate in an enclosed room in a building (one official said what could be better than to relieve yourself in the beautiful, healthful countryside air, with nature all around you?) -- or they can't lower themselves (status-wise) to bend down and clean a toilet so if you go outside, voila, problem solved.

Unfortunately, their habit of going outside, suitably away from their homes, to relieve themselves in the early evening, has proved an excellent opportunity for rapists to grab teenaged girls -- and rape is sorta ok in India, or at least, considered to be more shameful for the girl than the rapist. So dads might pay a rapist to marry his daughter to make everything right with the world (and their "status") again.

I mean, if things have been done this way for many millennia, how can they be wrong?

by Anonymousreply 477September 11, 2021 4:35 PM

India sounds horrific

by Anonymousreply 478September 11, 2021 4:44 PM

It’s tough for any near-tropical country to get pass the disease burden and become a world power.

India is coming close with each decade and has made impressive strides economically.

Just 60 years after Independence, the US wasn’t doing so great either

by Anonymousreply 486February 8, 2022 7:44 PM

Untrue, R486. By 1840 American per capita income had (once again) surpassed that of the British, having been previously high than the British prior to the war of independence (including accounting for slave households).

1835 per capita GDP:

UK per capita (not PPP): $3861 -- #1 in nominal terms

US per capita (not PPP): $3420 -- $2 in nominal terms

Netherlands per capita (not PPP): $3360 -- #3 in nominal terms

Factoring purchasing power, US per capita GDP was very likely higher than the UK.

R487, in 1840, the US had an economy based on slavery. Plus, it was heading into a Civil War because of it.

It IS incredibly strange how China has been able to rise as an economic power, while India, much freer and tolerant, is stagnant, relegated to call centers and being the world's virtual service providers. And they aren't even good at that.

The Chinese are just more cutthroat. And China has risen only due to a combination of having a hate hard-on for the U.S., and for investing in a decades-long program of corporate and intellectual espionage which has essentially given them all their technology. The Chinese have never really developed any technology of their own, which is something most people don't pause to realize. They have no innovation to speak of, just manufacturing. But the west's addiction to their cheap labor has made them rich and powerful, which is a bad combination for a warmongering, soulless society such as China.

India, on the other hand, at least has values of kindness built into its culture. They aren't so kind to one another perhaps, but they aren't generally known as an aggressive society, they don't seem to put economic prosperity or global influence at the top of any lists over there. Even getting Britain out of there was done through mostly peaceful means. They have a smattering of billionaires who themselves seem soulless and seem to have little loyalty to uplifting their people. Add that to their caste system and the unchecked misogyny in the way women are treated and you see clearly why India isn't really going anywhere, anytime soon. The society as a whole doesn't seem to have the motivation or stomach for it. They're their own worse enemy.

by Anonymousreply 503February 9, 2022 3:18 PM

R503, you sound like a child. A child who knows nothing about China except what CNN and BBC feed you. "Warmongering" China? Really? In the same sentence as "the west"? OMG.

by Anonymousreply 504February 9, 2022 3:27 PM

I thank god that on a person-to-person level, Indians and Chinese get along just fine. Peaceful trade and tourism will build more ties between them.

I read somewhere (can’t remember where, but a credible source) that India simply doesn’t have enough water to provide adequate indoor plumbing for their population. Obviously they have plenty of coastline, but I guess the the engineering requirements make an impractical source. I think having a significant portion of the population shitting in buckets and on the street is going to hold any country back.

[quote] It IS incredibly strange how China has been able to rise as an economic power, while India, much freer and tolerant, is stagnant,

India hasn't been stagnant at all, with a growing middle class and economy.

No tropical or subtropical country has become a world power because of the incredibly high burden of disease in these places. Northern countries don't have to deal with disease carrying bugs (although climate change is bringing some of that up north).

The issue isn't becoming a world power; India is most certainly a world power, given that it has nukes. The issue is high-quality development. And yes, as you say, disease does limit development. As far as I can tell, Singapore is the only tropical country that's become an IMF Advanced Economy.

Sadly, the whole strongman politics that has infected the world with Trump, Putin, Netanyahu, Bolsonaro, etc, has infected India too, with Modi.

Of course along with that comes religious extremism.

by Anonymousreply 513February 10, 2022 2:56 AM

Until India finds a way to deal with its human excrement problem and join the 18th century with proper local municipal and urban sanitation systems, there is no chance for advancement.

China had the 1-child policy from 1980 to 2015. That's 35 years. That says a lot about a country. Even if a percentage of the population broke the rules, the majority of the population did stick to having 1 child.

China centralized government and one party system allowed it to easily and rapidly reform the country from a dirt poor shithole to a major economic and technological power in just few decades.

India on the other hand is a federation of many states many with own language, culture and history all entangled in complex bureaucratic hell. And unlike communist China cracked down hard on religion and superstitions Indians proudly clings to it to this day.

by Anonymousreply 523February 10, 2022 8:41 AM

India is an enormously fragmented, diverse country. It's almost ungovernable. The British "united" India, and that was arguably a huge disservice for the long-term economic development of its component parts. Maybe there would have been an Indian state today without colonization, like Amartya Sen says here, but I doubt it.
