Morgan Fairchild & AIDS

I've read in two different celeb bios--one on Liz Taylor and one on another actor (whom I honestly don't recall right now)--that Morgan Fairchild was the original Hollywood "ring leader" of AIDS research fundraising in the early 80s. It was at some point decided that a "bigger name" was needed to raise awareness and funds in Hollywood, and Liz Taylor was convinced to step in and make it her cause.

Not that it matters all these years later--and with all the billions of dollars that have been raised on AIDS research fundraising--but I wonder how Morgan feels about that. She's quoted in this article from 2019 a few times. Does anyone recall Morgan being an early advocate for AIDS research?

I knew I always liked that bitch! Honestly, I think that when it comes to AIDS research she is more concerned with the work than with the recognition.

She's a smart cookie. Very political on social media and you never hear any horror stories about her. Seems like a joy to work with. She might not be a household name these days, but she's never stopped working. That usually means people enjoy working with her. She always delivers, too. She's a much better actress than she's even gotten credit for.

And the stage has been set...

Yes she was an early AIDS advocate. I remember her doing many Nightline type news shows raising awareness of the disease.

Around 1988, she represented Hollywood at a round table discussion when National US House Rep. William Danameyer (however it's spelled = CA Republican) made some wild & crazy statements about our community & AIDS.

She was smart & responded well in all of her appearances.

Someone posted in the last week on her twitter acknowledging that she was was a vocal supporter of gay issues when there were few celebrities speaking publicly and she thanked him

by Anonymousreply 5July 10, 2021 5:43 PM

She was very supportive of Dack Rambo when he was losing his battle with AIDS.

by Anonymousreply 6July 10, 2021 5:51 PM

I remember her speaking at some aides research symposium back in the day. Unlike some celebrities who read from prepared, if memorized text and who clearly have no idea what the words mean, Morgan Fairchild sounded truly informed.

Elizabeth stepped up because of Rock Hudson whom she was a good friend of. She had seen the way he was treated by the press and her peers and was angry.

Bea Arthur told a story in an interview of being at Hudson's funeral. When Taylor came in, someone who was sitting next to Bea bitched and moaned to her that with all her fame and money, Elizabeth should be doing something about AIDS. A couple of months later, she practically became the public driving force behind it.

Fairchild is AMAZING on Twitter -- I get so much political content from her! Who knew? I don't think I've ever even seen her in anything besides her silly cameo in Pee-wee's Big Adventure (I was too young for 80s soaps) but she's gained a fan

by Anonymousreply 9July 10, 2021 6:22 PM

Morgan Fairchild was and still is an amazing beautiful woman, talented, very intelligent and really nice. What a gem.

Morgan doesn't look like that any longer R10. When she died of AIDS it was a very sad day. She was one of the first demi celebrities to succumb. RIP.

Rambo and her were on the one season series "Paper Dolls." Such a great opening.

R11 What do you mean she doesn't still look like she did in a photo taken thirty-five years ago?

by Anonymousreply 13July 10, 2021 8:32 PM

R13 R10 also what do you mean “when she died of AIDS”??What are you talking about ?

by Anonymousreply 14July 10, 2021 8:37 PM

She grew up and got her revenge...

R15 Is that really her?

Looks like a Dorothy I know...

She’s the real deal

She knows her audience..

It's amazing to me that she can have so much surgery (obviously), but still look A) like herself, and B) human.

Weirdly, I was just thinking about the SVU episode she was on with Susan Anton, Ann Margaret, and Jaclyn Smith.

She's a genius-level amateur on virology and terrorism, apparently.

[quote]It’s clear to those who have chatted with Fairchild about any of these topics that her interests are anything but shallow. “Actress Morgan Fairchild knows more about terrorism than 99.9 percent [of] Americans—and most members of Congress,” David Corn, the Washington bureau chief of Mother Jones magazine, wrote for The Nation in 2007. “She was talking [with me] about developments in Iraq at the time, and the general state of play in the counterterrorism field and began citing known or suspected terrorists by name,” Corn told the Beast. “We’re not talking Osama bin Laden; we’re talking names that only a few Americans probably know. They weren’t names I was familiar with…I always look forward to talking with her. She’s incredibly intelligent and very knowledgeable about politics.”

R2 & R21 She'd actually wanted to be a doctor before becoming a model and actress. She's one incredible lady. Few people have it all. She comes pretty damn close.

by Anonymousreply 22July 15, 2021 5:00 AM

I would like to offer her a position...

by Anonymousreply 23July 15, 2021 5:06 AM

I'm leery of anyone who self promotes as much as she does. She gets credit as a policy expert based on what experience? Reading trade journals?

So she reads trade journals. What is wrong with wanting to be well informed and wanting to have the ability to have intelligent, meaningful conversations on topics that interest her?

Would you prefer she do makeup tutorials on You Tube R24?

by Anonymousreply 25July 15, 2021 7:20 AM

Morgan is amazing. She's so up on the news, you need only follow her on Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 26July 15, 2021 7:47 AM

Linda Gray and George Hamilton were both 79 when that video was made.

They both look spectacular.

And I love Morgan Fairchild. I remember watching her on Falcon Crest and Pee Wee's Big Adventure in awe as a gayby.

by Anonymousreply 27July 15, 2021 7:57 AM

I would love to see her play Auntie Mame on stage. She would look great in vintage costumes.

by Anonymousreply 28February 23, 2022 6:23 PM

I went to see Joan Rivers on a UK theatre tour around 2005. I recall her saying in the Question and answer session afterwards that actually everyone says or reports that it was Elizabeth Taylor who was the original publicly vocal Hollywood voice campaigning for victims of aids and HIV but that actually there were others who spoke out earlier including Joan herself who did fundraiser and stand up showd etc . She was quite indignant about it but her rage was more targeted at the media itself rather than Liz. She never tried to say Elizabeth Taylor didn't help a lot she clearly did but she really objected to the portrayal and rewriting of history making it all as one lone hero martyr Liz.

MF on Flamingo Road was just as much fun as Joan Collins on Dynasty.

by Anonymousreply 30February 23, 2022 9:06 PM

Racine on Paper Dolls was a hit, too.

That show should have gone on a while.
