Actors Who Won Undeserved Emmys
Besides Zendaya last year. (Stating the obvious, TBH.)
Jane Curtin comes to mind...she won B2B Emmys for 'Kate & Ally' in '84/'85. (Then 'Golden Girls' began, and she was history.)
Patricia Arquette for 'Medium' in 2005. She even beat out DL fave Glenn!
SJP in 2004 for 'Sex & the Horseface'. No, no, and neigh!
All of James Spader's x3 wins for David E. Kelley shit dramas. Enough said.
And finally, Kiefer "Kick a Christmas Tree" Sutherland for '24' in 2006.
*Dishonourable mention: Katherine "Kitty Litter" Heigl in 2007. (But she sealed her own fate by proclaiming herself not being nominate-able the next year.)

James Spader totally earned his Emmy nominations and awards. As did Jane Curtain.

Jane Curtin is a comic genius. The creators of "3rd Rock from the Sun" said they had to hire her when they were creating the show because they considered her the funniest straight woman in comedy since Margaret Dumont.

Hope Lange won back-to-back Emmys for her low-wattage performance in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. What was really outrageous is she beat Elizabeth Montgomery for Bewitched and Marlo Thomas for That Girl both times. Elizabeth and Marlo never won for their groundbreaking sitcoms.

Linney was head and shoulders above Z.
Z is hit or miss. Euphoria was more up her alley (easier to play characters which align with the persona of the actor) than her other performances, which have been poor.
Euphoria performance was not a stretch and in light of the nominees; the Emmy for it completely undeserved.

That was for R28...
I also think Laura Linney was the most deserving. But Zendaya was pretty damn good in her own right. I watched that show expecting to hate it (I just wanted to see McDreamy naked). But Z absolutely pulled me in with her performance.

[quote] You think Zendaya's persona is a drug addicted loser who sleeps with trans girls in the shitty little town of Methville?
Drama, R29/R30. Drama.
Yet Z was VERY close with Harvey Weinstein before Harvey’s denouement. Let’s just also say she has a great deal of fun with ingested substances at the Chateau Marmot - and other places (pre-pandemic).
So it’s all in the perspective. LA may not be Methville officially, but in a sense the Weinstein underworld is not so far removed from “Euphoria”.

Rhea Perlman maybe deserved one Emmy for Cheers. Julia Duffy should have gotten one for Newhart but kept losing to Perlman.
I don’t think Lucille Ball deserved the ones she got in the sixties for The Lucy Show. She’s another one who blocked Elizabeth Montgomery from earning a deserved Emmy for Bewitched.
Ruth Gordon for Taxi. It was a guest star one episode, before they gave them for guest performances. She probably beat Katherine Helmond who never got one for Soap and should have.

McKinnon is talented, but overrated. Her impersonations of male politicians and other well known men just became creepy over time.
If there was a thread for "Actors Who Got Undeserved Emmy nominations", Leslie Jones would own that thread. She was one of the worst SNL cast members of all time, but managed to get Emmy nods for sketches where she mostly botched her lines or shouted her lines.

r25 Marlo Thomas could act the pants off Hope Lange, whose sense of comedy was to smile wanly in every situation. Lange ruined the New Dick Van Dyke Show when she couldn't master the wifey role, which Mary Tyler Moore had done effortlessly. Lange had zero chemistry with her fellow actors, including the lovable Van Dyke.

SJP deserved a win for an earlier season of SATC when she was actually acting.
Doris Roberts continuously winning over the likes of Kim Cattrall for her iconic work is obnoxious.
Helen Hunt should not have kept winning more than once. Calista Flockhart deserved a win for with of the first seasons of Ally McBeal.
Marcia Cross deserved a win for season 1 Bree on Desperate Housewives.
Jane Kaczmarek and Krakowski both deserved a win too.

York and Moorehead deserved some wins as well. I am not sure York was even nominated. Moorehead did win for her guest star appearance on Wild Wild West. That show actually did have some good acting performances from a number of the guest villains.
Julia-L-D probably did not deserve all of her Emmys, but she is good. While she does specialize in the same sort of character, I thought there were some differences on how she played Christine on New Christine vs. Elaine on Seinfeld. Still need to catch VEEP, but is not on anything I stream right now.

OP, have you even watched an episode of Kate and Allie? Curtin was BRILLIANT in that show. It was really the role of a lifetime for her, because the character suited her comic gifts so well, she moved past just being the 'queen of deadpan' and the 'straight woman' which is usually her bread and butter and created a wonderfully rich, hilarious character.

Sherman Helmsley was brilliant as George Jefferson, on par with Carroll O’Connor as Archie Bunker. Yet, in 11 seasons of THE JEFFERSONS he was nominated once (and lost to John Ritter for THREE’S COMPANY - it was the final year of his show and John had never won).
Yet, Isabel Sanford got 7 nominations for her role, winning once.
One of my favourite clips...

Actors who win an Emmy shouldn't be eligible for the same role again. I don't recall anyone who deserved two Emmys or more for the same role. Have Tyne Daly or Sharon Gless miraculously updated their acting abilities while playing CAGNEY & LACEY over seven years? I liked them but I don't think so. This year HAMILTON and SNL performers will win over actors who had to work much more to create characters. Or a 90-second appearance by Don Cheadle could win in the guest-star category over the heartbreaking NPH in IT'S A SIN who was robbed of a nomination.
