Actors Who Won Undeserved Emmys

Besides Zendaya last year. (Stating the obvious, TBH.)

Jane Curtin comes to mind...she won B2B Emmys for 'Kate & Ally' in '84/'85. (Then 'Golden Girls' began, and she was history.)

Patricia Arquette for 'Medium' in 2005. She even beat out DL fave Glenn!

SJP in 2004 for 'Sex & the Horseface'. No, no, and neigh!

All of James Spader's x3 wins for David E. Kelley shit dramas. Enough said.

And finally, Kiefer "Kick a Christmas Tree" Sutherland for '24' in 2006.

*Dishonourable mention: Katherine "Kitty Litter" Heigl in 2007. (But she sealed her own fate by proclaiming herself not being nominate-able the next year.)

by Anonymousreply 90July 29, 2021 2:50 PM

Jennifer Aniston

None of the [italic]Will & Grace[/italic] cast deserved it either for that awful obnoxious mugging.

by Anonymousreply 1July 10, 2021 5:43 PM

Jane Curtin is a wonderful comic actor.

by Anonymousreply 2July 10, 2021 6:12 PM

How is Jane Curtin in any way "undeserving" and comparable to Zendaya?

by Anonymousreply 3July 10, 2021 6:14 PM

James Spader totally earned his Emmy nominations and awards. As did Jane Curtain.

by Anonymousreply 4July 10, 2021 6:26 PM

Who's Jane Curtain? Was she the star of that show [italic]Cait & Ally[/italic] with Susan Saint Jaymes?

by Anonymousreply 5July 10, 2021 6:27 PM

Rightfully, OP, Zendaya tops this list.

by Anonymousreply 6July 10, 2021 6:38 PM

Jane Curtin is a comic genius. The creators of "3rd Rock from the Sun" said they had to hire her when they were creating the show because they considered her the funniest straight woman in comedy since Margaret Dumont.

OP has the shittiest taste.

by Anonymousreply 7July 10, 2021 6:40 PM

Poor OP getting dragged more than Zendaya.

by Anonymousreply 8July 10, 2021 7:45 PM

oH REALLY OP ??? Why don't you ask if I deserved an Emmy ?

by Anonymousreply 9July 10, 2021 8:16 PM

I actually think Zendaya was great in Euphoria.

The issue is that she won of Laura Linney.

by Anonymousreply 10July 10, 2021 8:21 PM

Burt Reynolds didn’t deserve an Emmy for Evening Shade.

by Anonymousreply 11July 10, 2021 8:23 PM

Er, OVER....

by Anonymousreply 12July 10, 2021 8:23 PM

Vivian Vance

by Anonymousreply 13July 10, 2021 8:25 PM

Dan Levy did not deserve a Best Supporting Actor Emmy last year. As a matter of fact, the only person from Schitt's Creek who deserved to win was Catherine O'Hara. Nonody else.

by Anonymousreply 14July 10, 2021 9:52 PM

Hope Lange won back-to-back Emmys for her low-wattage performance in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. What was really outrageous is she beat Elizabeth Montgomery for Bewitched and Marlo Thomas for That Girl both times. Elizabeth and Marlo never won for their groundbreaking sitcoms.

R14 I was glad Annie won too.

by Anonymousreply 16July 10, 2021 10:18 PM

Have people watched Euphoria? I believe Linney should have won too but Zendaya is excellent in it. It’s a complicated, real performance.

Even Missy acknowledges she may not be the most deserving...

Candice Bergen winning five Emmys for "Murphy Brown" was ludicrous.

R18, That moment never gets old.

Hope Lange was a better actress than Marlo Thomas

Do you mean Academy Award Winner Patricia Arquette? Beat Academy Award Loser Glenn Close?

Patricia Arquette in Medium...
Have people watched Euphoria? I believe Linney should have won too but Zendaya is excellent in it. It’s a complicated, real performance.

Linney was head and shoulders above Z.

Z is hit or miss. Euphoria was more up her alley (easier to play characters which align with the persona of the actor) than her other performances, which have been poor.

Euphoria performance was not a stretch and in light of the nominees; the Emmy for it completely undeserved.

by Anonymousreply 28July 11, 2021 12:18 AM

You think Zendaya's persona is a drug addicted loser who sleeps with trans girls in the shitty little town of Methville?

That's not what I get when I see her in other things. But maybe that's just me.

by Anonymousreply 29July 11, 2021 12:23 AM

That was for R28...

I also think Laura Linney was the most deserving. But Zendaya was pretty damn good in her own right. I watched that show expecting to hate it (I just wanted to see McDreamy naked). But Z absolutely pulled me in with her performance.

by Anonymousreply 30July 11, 2021 12:25 AM
You think Zendaya's persona is a drug addicted loser who sleeps with trans girls in the shitty little town of Methville?

Drama, R29/R30. Drama.

Yet Z was VERY close with Harvey Weinstein before Harvey’s denouement. Let’s just also say she has a great deal of fun with ingested substances at the Chateau Marmot - and other places (pre-pandemic).

So it’s all in the perspective. LA may not be Methville officially, but in a sense the Weinstein underworld is not so far removed from “Euphoria”.

by Anonymousreply 31July 11, 2021 1:10 AM

Everything about Zendaya (black Karen) is overrated.

by Anonymousreply 32July 11, 2021 1:20 AM

Kate McKinnon in 2017

by Anonymousreply 33July 11, 2021 1:30 AM

Kate McKinnon is hysterical. But this is the datalounge so people will attack female performers while pretending someone like Darren "I'd be unemployed without Ryan Murphy" Criss is God's gift to the acting world

by Anonymousreply 34July 11, 2021 1:34 AM

Helen Cunt

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

by Anonymousreply 35July 11, 2021 1:38 AM

R33 I am over Kate McKinnon too.

by Anonymousreply 36July 11, 2021 2:17 AM

Zendaya deserved her Emmy and she should have been Oscar nominated for Malcolm and Marie. She’s a terrific actor.

by Anonymousreply 37July 11, 2021 2:33 AM

Hi Zendaya and Zendaya's publicist r37!!!

by Anonymousreply 38July 11, 2021 2:34 AM

Julia Louis Dreyfus has basically given the exact same performance her entire career. She is massively overrated.

by Anonymousreply 39July 11, 2021 2:36 AM

R38, nope, just not a typical DLer who can’t appreciate black artists. I love Regina King also.

by Anonymousreply 40July 11, 2021 2:37 AM

Wow, R40, you're SO evolved!!

by Anonymousreply 41July 11, 2021 2:39 AM

R41, it’s a pretty low bar here.

by Anonymousreply 42July 11, 2021 2:40 AM

LOL r38. Regina King is PLENTY loved here. But nice try.

by Anonymousreply 43July 11, 2021 2:41 AM

by Anonymousreply 44July 11, 2021 2:42 AM
Hi Zendaya and Zendaya's publicist [R37]

Haha.....so true, R38! [Oscar for Malcolm and Marie? You’ve GOT TO BE a publicist, R37....unbelievable. ETA: Or an AA supporter who supports preferentially via colour of skin only.🙁]
Julia Louis Dreyfus has basically given the exact same performance her entire career. She is massively overrated.

You’ve described what many (in LA ) are afraid to vocalize about the incredibly wealthy JLD, R39.

by Anonymousreply 45July 11, 2021 2:42 AM

Rhea Perlman maybe deserved one Emmy for Cheers. Julia Duffy should have gotten one for Newhart but kept losing to Perlman.

I don’t think Lucille Ball deserved the ones she got in the sixties for The Lucy Show. She’s another one who blocked Elizabeth Montgomery from earning a deserved Emmy for Bewitched.

Ruth Gordon for Taxi. It was a guest star one episode, before they gave them for guest performances. She probably beat Katherine Helmond who never got one for Soap and should have.

by Anonymousreply 46July 11, 2021 2:50 AM

R46, But, Katherine Helmond had that hot young husband to console her.

by Anonymousreply 47July 11, 2021 2:54 AM

Marcia Cross should have won the year Felicity Huffman won Best Actress in a Comedy for 'Desperate Housewives.'

by Anonymousreply 48July 11, 2021 2:55 AM

Doris Roberts and John Larroquette should be added to the list of actors with far too many Emmys.

by Anonymousreply 49July 11, 2021 2:59 AM

I always wanted Katherine Helmond to win for Soap. Didn’t Catherine Damon win instead? Maybe that was the Golden Globe.

by Anonymousreply 50July 11, 2021 6:11 AM

Cathryn Damon, Richard Mulligan, and Robert Guillaume were the only [italic]Soap[/italic] actors to get Emmys.

Was Billy Crystal even nominated?

by Anonymousreply 51July 11, 2021 7:04 AM
I am over Kate McKinnon too.

McKinnon is talented, but overrated. Her impersonations of male politicians and other well known men just became creepy over time.

If there was a thread for "Actors Who Got Undeserved Emmy nominations", Leslie Jones would own that thread. She was one of the worst SNL cast members of all time, but managed to get Emmy nods for sketches where she mostly botched her lines or shouted her lines.

by Anonymousreply 52July 11, 2021 7:42 PM

McKinnon reminds me of Molly Shannon. Funny, but lazy. When they find something that hits with the audience, they tend to repeat it, even if it doesn't fit for the character.

by Anonymousreply 53July 11, 2021 7:53 PM

R53 I agree on Molly Shannon. But, she gave a good dramatic performance in the movie Other People. She should do more drama movies or TV shows.

by Anonymousreply 54July 11, 2021 7:56 PM

Oh, agreed. She's actually a very good actress, something McKinnon is not.

by Anonymousreply 55July 11, 2021 8:04 PM

r25 Marlo Thomas could act the pants off Hope Lange, whose sense of comedy was to smile wanly in every situation. Lange ruined the New Dick Van Dyke Show when she couldn't master the wifey role, which Mary Tyler Moore had done effortlessly. Lange had zero chemistry with her fellow actors, including the lovable Van Dyke.

by Anonymousreply 56July 11, 2021 9:13 PM

Fun Fact: Hope Lange delivered one of the eulogies at Natalie Wood's funeral

by Anonymousreply 57July 11, 2021 10:28 PM

Zendaya

Darren Criss

Jim Parsons

Julia Louis Dreyfus

SJP deserved a win for an earlier season of SATC when she was actually acting.

Doris Roberts continuously winning over the likes of Kim Cattrall for her iconic work is obnoxious.

Helen Hunt should not have kept winning more than once. Calista Flockhart deserved a win for with of the first seasons of Ally McBeal.

Marcia Cross deserved a win for season 1 Bree on Desperate Housewives.

Jane Kaczmarek and Krakowski both deserved a win too.

by Anonymousreply 60July 27, 2021 6:50 PM
What was really outrageous is she beat Elizabeth Montgomery for Bewitched and Marlo Thomas for That Girl both times. Elizabeth and Marlo never won for their groundbreaking sitcoms.

York and Moorehead deserved some wins as well. I am not sure York was even nominated. Moorehead did win for her guest star appearance on Wild Wild West. That show actually did have some good acting performances from a number of the guest villains.

Julia-L-D probably did not deserve all of her Emmys, but she is good. While she does specialize in the same sort of character, I thought there were some differences on how she played Christine on New Christine vs. Elaine on Seinfeld. Still need to catch VEEP, but is not on anything I stream right now.

by Anonymousreply 61July 27, 2021 6:58 PM

Ever notice how the Oscars give more acting awards to children than the Emmys have?

by Anonymousreply 62July 27, 2021 7:17 PM

Andrew Cuomo

by Anonymousreply 63July 27, 2021 7:30 PM

It's an Outrage they never honoured Dame Angela Lansbury. Not EVEN for the Guest nom she got for deigning to play the mother of a sex attacker on Law and Order SVU!

by Anonymousreply 64July 27, 2021 7:32 PM

OP, have you even watched an episode of Kate and Allie? Curtin was BRILLIANT in that show. It was really the role of a lifetime for her, because the character suited her comic gifts so well, she moved past just being the 'queen of deadpan' and the 'straight woman' which is usually her bread and butter and created a wonderfully rich, hilarious character.

by Anonymousreply 65July 27, 2021 7:36 PM

I agree with the posters upthread about Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Terrible, mannered one-note actress with annoying gestures and facial expressions.

by Anonymousreply 66July 27, 2021 7:36 PM

Sherman Helmsley was brilliant as George Jefferson, on par with Carroll O’Connor as Archie Bunker. Yet, in 11 seasons of THE JEFFERSONS he was nominated once (and lost to John Ritter for THREE’S COMPANY - it was the final year of his show and John had never won).

Yet, Isabel Sanford got 7 nominations for her role, winning once.

One of my favourite clips...

R61 I know that Dick York was nominated at least once. I agree he should have gotten an Emmy. His son and fans keep trying to get him a star on the walk of fame, but I doubt that will happen at this point.

Emmys are so easy. I got one on one of my first jobs. Holocaust. I didn't even bother to go. I mean who cares? I got another one a few years ago just for narrating something.

They're a dime a dozen. Even G has 3.

by Anonymousreply 71July 29, 2021 4:59 AM

Ms. Slezak won too many.

by Anonymousreply 72July 29, 2021 5:07 AM

Michael Richards & Rip Torn were great on Seinfeld & Larry Sanders, but between them they stole—STOLE, I say—three Supporting Actor Emmys from David Hyde Pierce during the best seasons of Frasier.

by Anonymousreply 73July 29, 2021 5:34 AM

You and your love of wet vaginas r73. Why would defend that effeminate gay over two real men?

by Anonymousreply 74July 29, 2021 5:36 AM

by Anonymousreply 75July 29, 2021 5:37 AM

Does John Oliver have to win every year?

by Anonymousreply 76July 29, 2021 5:38 AM

R74 I think Frasier is the greatest sitcom of all time. Hyde Pierce as Niles is genius. He’s perfect.

On the other hand, Rip Torn *did* once get into a knife fight with Dennis Hopper…

by Anonymousreply 77July 29, 2021 5:46 AM

Hyde David Pierce has been rewarded plenty. Can he play anyone other than Niles? No.

by Anonymousreply 78July 29, 2021 5:49 AM

Marcia Cross could have won but it’s Felicity Huffman who is the good actress, soo..

by Anonymousreply 79July 29, 2021 5:59 AM

Felicity Huffman was robbed for not winning for her role as the school principal in American Crime. I think that Lange won that year for another of her freak show roles.

by Anonymousreply 80July 29, 2021 6:11 AM

this years Emmys will be the lowest rated ever

by Anonymousreply 81July 29, 2021 8:12 AM
Michael Richards & Rip Torn were great on Seinfeld & Larry Sanders, but between them they stole—STOLE, I say—three Supporting Actor Emmys from David Hyde Pierce during the best seasons of Frasier.

People have been mentioning JLD. but Richards was the one who I thought became really one-note and tiresome. David Hyde Pierce was definitely robbed.

by Anonymousreply 82July 29, 2021 12:36 PM

Most likely an unpopular opinion, while Lucci had a number of undeserved nominations, she was actually pretty good in the episode where she won and don't have a problem with her winning that year.

by Anonymousreply 83July 29, 2021 12:42 PM

Zendaya was sensational in Euphoria, is going to have a huge career and fully deserved her Emmy, Klan Granny OP.

by Anonymousreply 84July 29, 2021 12:48 PM

This is 100% a Klan Granny thread. You old racists are fucking exhausting. F&Fed and blocked. So tired of this stupid shit and you’re lame ass sock puppet accounts.

by Anonymousreply 85July 29, 2021 12:52 PM

R82, In 2007, David Hyde Pierce STOLE the Tony Award from Raúl Esparza.

by Anonymousreply 86July 29, 2021 1:01 PM

Actors who win an Emmy shouldn't be eligible for the same role again. I don't recall anyone who deserved two Emmys or more for the same role. Have Tyne Daly or Sharon Gless miraculously updated their acting abilities while playing CAGNEY & LACEY over seven years? I liked them but I don't think so. This year HAMILTON and SNL performers will win over actors who had to work much more to create characters. Or a 90-second appearance by Don Cheadle could win in the guest-star category over the heartbreaking NPH in IT'S A SIN who was robbed of a nomination.

by Anonymousreply 87July 29, 2021 1:46 PM

The woman who played the mother in “It’s a Sin” should’ve been nominated. I loved her in “Ashes to Ashes” several years ago.

by Anonymousreply 88July 29, 2021 2:34 PM

Sarah Silverman won an Emmy for her guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel where she sang I'm Fucking Matt Damon, a song any 5 yr old could have written. Awards are meaningless.
