Team USA Olympic swimmer Michael Andrew won't get the vaccine because of side effects

Just a few weeks out from the Tokyo Olympics, former 100-meter individual medley world champion Michael Andrew said he will not receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Andrew, 22, is heading to his first Olympic Games with Team USA, where he'll compete in the 100-meter breaststroke, 200-meter individual medley and 50-meter freestyle.

"My reason behind it is -- for one, it was in the last moment I didn't want to put anything in my body that I didn't know how I would potentially react to," Andrew told reporters on a conference call. "As an athlete on the elite level, everything we do is very calculated. For me in the training cycles and especially at trials, I didn't want to risk any days out, because there are periods where if you take a vaccine, you have to deal with some days off."

Andrew later said he would not get vaccinated in the "distant future," either, revealing it was more than a matter of timing.

Olympic athletes are not required to be vaccinated in order to travel to Tokyo, but Japan this week declared a state of emergency due to rising COVID-19 infections. That, in turn, led organizers to ban spectators at the Games, scheduled for July 23-Aug. 8.

Andrew said he'll comply with all COVID-19 protocols while in Tokyo -- "lots of testing, masks, socially distanced, obviously staying away from the crowds, everything like that."

Andrew placed first in the 100-meter breaststroke at U.S. Olympic Trials last month.

Why didn't he get the vaccine in April? Why is he debating this issue a couple of weeks before the Olympics?

by Anonymousreply 4July 10, 2021 2:29 AM

Tokyo shouldn’t allow him to compete if he’s not vaccinated. There shouldn’t be any exceptions.

I'm pretty shocked that Tokyo is allowing unvaccinated athletes into their country considering the pandemic is still raging with less than 17% of the population vaccinated.

by Anonymousreply 11July 10, 2021 3:19 AM

When I was a kid vaccinations were mandatory. Some of the vaccinations we got at school.

by Anonymousreply 12July 10, 2021 4:07 AM

Bye, gurl, bye...

by Anonymousreply 13July 10, 2021 4:13 AM

He is pretty damn hot.

There won't be any spectators, so Japan will be safe.

[quote] He also attributes his success to God and believes in revolutionizing the sport of swimming by sharing "the glory of God to the world".[71] One example of this is when Andrew thanked his family and God in his 100 meter breaststroke post-win interview during the NBC telecast covering day two of the 2020 US Olympic Trials in swimming.[72] An example of Andrew extending grace to a fellow competitor is when he shared his post-win interview for the 200 meter individual medley at the 2020 US Olympic Trials with world record holder in the event, Ryan Lochte, who also competed in the race and finished seventh.[73]

[quote] At the end of 2020, Andrew was diagnosed with COVID-19.[74] In July 2021 and in advance of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Andrew communicated publicly via press conference he would not be getting a COVID-19 vaccine.[75][76] Unknown side effects that could potentially interfere with his training was one of the reasons Andrew shared as to why he would not get the vaccine.

At my complex, residents have to sign a waiver to use the swimming pool because of the still present dangers of Covid. If I was a swimmer I would not be getting into the pool with this guy.

by Anonymousreply 16July 10, 2021 9:58 AM

He welcome to not have the vaccine but he shouldn't be allowed to attend the Olympics if he doesn't. End of story.

He can wait for the next Olympic games instead.

by Anonymousreply 17July 10, 2021 10:01 AM

The god stuff above says it all-- stupid fundie.

by Anonymousreply 18July 10, 2021 10:06 AM

Reading the story - I'd be very surprised if Andrew is allowed to attend the games. Oh well! He'll have more time for praying!

by Anonymousreply 19July 10, 2021 10:07 AM

What an idiot. His body is in top form. He’s young. The vaccine should hardly affect him. I got AZ’d. After each jab I felt a bit tired for a few hours, although this didn’t stop me from going to the gym on the same day, doing hypertrophy. And I’m 48. He must be an anti-vaxxer.

by Anonymousreply 20July 10, 2021 10:12 AM

He’s young enough to survive Covid, but is perfectly happy to risk spreading it around to people who are more vulnerable to its effects. How Christian of him!!

I suppose it all fits in with his philosophy of a God who tolerates great suffering in the world, but apparently takes a special interest in which asshole wins the 100m breaststroke.

by Anonymousreply 21July 10, 2021 10:27 AM

When America sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're sending people that have a lot of problems, and they're bringing those problems with them. They're bringing COVID-19 and ignorance. And some, I assume, are good people, who got their vaccines and aren’t Trumpers.

by Anonymousreply 22July 10, 2021 10:30 AM

Japan has incredibly strict restrictions on foreigners' entry to the country. That they would allow the Olympics to send athletes who are not vaccinated is really unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 23July 10, 2021 7:43 PM

He looks old for 22.

by Anonymousreply 24July 10, 2021 7:48 PM

I hope this idiot doesn’t medal as it would fuel the anti-vaxxer fire.

It a shame that someone who puts the public at risk is allowed to compete, but Sha'Carri Richardson can’t because she smoked some pot.

by Anonymousreply 48July 29, 2021 2:44 PM

I got into it with someone on FB about this. He said it’s a personal choice and has no effect on anyone else.

I’m like, well, unless he tests positive and his teammates and contacts have to self-isolate.

He said that’s not Michael Andrew’s problem - that’s the fault of the IOC and Japanese organizers.

The selfishness and obtuseness of these MAGATs.

by Anonymousreply 49July 29, 2021 3:08 PM

r49, it's not just the MAGA people who are anti-vaccine. Plenty of minorities refuse to get it as well, and are compounding the fact that they are galivanting around maskless. I went to a Home Depot in a low-vax minority area in my region. I was one of the only people in the store masked and trying to practice social distancing.

Also, weren't the super-liberal gays basically being just as selfish and obtuse back in the '80s when they protested the closing of the baths to curb the spread of AIDS or when they were being pleaded with to not be so promiscuous or at least use a condom? My point is that this type of narrow-minded thinking transcends political affiliation.

by Anonymousreply 50July 29, 2021 3:33 PM

“Andrew carried a mask in his hand and placed it on a table during the interview. He was twice asked why he was not wearing one.

"No, no reason," he said. He still did not put it on.

"For me, it's pretty hard to breathe in after kind of sacrificing my body in the water," he said. "So I feel like my health is a little more tied to being able to breathe than protecting what's coming out of my mouth.”

What a pretentious douche! “Sacrificing my body in the water”. No medals for him!

The athletes ask get tested every day. The pole vaulter has already traded poz and been pulled out of the games. I don't know whether he was a trumpet or was vaxxed

by Anonymousreply 61July 30, 2021 2:49 PM

Yeah he's in a unique situation that the majority of the population will never understand. I'd be paranoid about getting sick too if I was in the Olympics. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity, twice if you're lucky. I'm sure after the last competition he'll get it, and I'm sure he's taking all the necessary precautions in the mean time.

by Anonymousreply 62July 30, 2021 3:03 PM

[quote] Also, weren't the super-liberal gays basically being just as selfish and obtuse back in the '80s when they protested the closing of the baths to curb the spread of AIDS or when they were being pleaded with to not be so promiscuous or at least use a condom?

Fuck you and your nazi rewrite of history

For several years, the gays were the only ones spreading safe sex information. The rest of the world just stepped back to let us die.

by Anonymousreply 63July 30, 2021 4:23 PM

I don't really see a problem with his not being vaccinated.

If the athletes are being tested for Covid every day, then what's the point?

by Anonymousreply 64July 30, 2021 6:20 PM

R64 I've been saying all along that testing is more important than vaccinating the least vulnerable but good luck convincing others. They are in a cult.

by Anonymousreply 65July 30, 2021 6:23 PM

Gen Z should be called Generation U for Unvaxxed.

by Anonymousreply 66July 30, 2021 6:25 PM

What good does testing do? Theoretically you can test neg one morning, pick up the bug that same afternoon and spread it to god knows how many people before you test poz the next day. The upcoming NYC policy to test city employees once a week if they refuse to get vaccinated is a joke. If they contract the virus between weekly tests, they've already spread it to a multitude of people before their next test the following week. Get fucking vaccinated! It may not necessarily protect you from getting infected, but it will overwhelmingly spare you from a severe case and certainly death, as well as be one less unvaccinated person allowing this fucker to keep mutating until it's mutated into a variant that is resistant to the vaccines. Why are people even debating this?

by Anonymousreply 67July 30, 2021 8:18 PM

This thread is wacky.

by Anonymousreply 68July 30, 2021 8:21 PM

His family is crazy Christian. His dad has basically ran his whole life - training him in a way that made him super successful as a 14 and 15 year old, but he hasn't lived up to his potential since.

He trains high intensity all the time - full out sprints over and over. That only goes so far.

by Anonymousreply 69July 30, 2021 8:24 PM

He should be kept in his room when he's not practicing or competing. He must not put others in danger.

R67 We have rapid testing that's even available over the counter. Testing won't eliminate all cases (neither does vaccinations), but if done frequently, should prevent any potential outspread. I am fully vaccinated and was tested again a few weeks ago. The problem of inadequate testing will really rear its ugly head when people fall ill from common illnesses in the months to come. We need to provide enough incentives for businesses to continue to be fully operational.

I believe Fierstein was attacked for promoting monogamy with Torch Song in the early 80s.

R63 I am afraid you are trying to rewrite history. Yes there were gay men trying to educate others but there were also those who objected to having their sexual lives curtailed. If you were an adult then you were clearly wearing blinkers. It was a very confused frightening time.
