by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 10, 2021 1:15 AM |
Honestly I’m good with any of the four finalists. Ash seems like a great girl and it should be fun watching her game versus the Pliskbot. Pliskbot has been at it awhile so would be nice to see her finally capture a slam. Fun to see BoobsOut lose (always) but also kind of fun to see him rub Gramps and Pedal’s face in the mud while he chases history. So I’m pretty good with any outcome.

All that is left to do is for him to lose in the first round of USA Open and he will fall apart.

No idea, expect it grew out of the name 'Dominic Thiem' ... which was funny for about 1 post.

by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 10, 2021 3:35 AM |
the Djokovic-Shapovalov match was a perfect example of the result of Wimbledon slowing down their courts starting in 2002. Had they kept the courts as fast as they used to be, even Djokovic's supreme defense wouldn't have been able to get back as many of the haymakers Shapovalov was throwing at him today. Shapovalov for his part doesn't have it together mentally. He's still quite young though

Kyrgios withdrew from the Olympics today because he doesn't want to play in an empty stadium. He loves interacting with and entertaining the crowds

I think Borety has too much variety for Pliskbot and will wear her down unless Pliskbot serves out of her mind and Borety lets the pressure of the occasion get to her.
By the way what happened to Sue Barker? Why are random fools and clueless nobodies being trotted out to interview the players now? Will lez icon Martina Navratilova make an appearance today if Pliskbot wins? Will Evonne Goolagong present the trophy if Borety wins?
Will Cunty Margaret Court remind everyone that Ashleigh is biracial and thus of inferior stock unlike her own superior Northern European, Christian, married, heterosexual self? Will Chrissy Evert have enough time to recover from her facelift and vaginal rejuvenation surgery to commentate during the final and mention that Shapo and FAA have a long way to go before they match Genie Bouchard's accomplishments?

R3 I suppose you are joking but the closet had devastating effects on Ian Thorpe (whose career could have been longer). Not everybody react the same, some closeted actors had self esteem problems and drug addictions but others are more than happy to lie to promote their careers.
In a closer and more conservative enviroment like sports the effect could be terrible.
There are athletes who are able to compete amazingly well even when their life is a mess (Greg Louganis is a prime example) but that's not the case for most of them

I only listened to the match yesterday. Denis had a meltdown at the end of the 2nd set, I think. Did anyone see it? I Googled "Shapalov meltdown", I didn't realize how many times he's lost his cool.
ALso, born in Israel, he wears a cross but his mother says he's Jewish? What's up with that?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 10, 2021 10:42 AM |
Why was Shapovalov crying when he left the court? Who does this nobody think he is? You have to be a legend and a member of the Big Four to be able to cry on Centre Court. You have to earn your right to shed your tears. The Big Four obviously have but I won't have this Canadian thing forgetting his place and contaminating Centre Court with his tears. Big Four forever!
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 10, 2021 10:50 AM |
Come on Judy, to cry on the center court you only need to have eyes and be on the center court

by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 10, 2021 12:07 PM |
R33, did you miss where I said Big Four? You need to EARN the right to bless Centre Court with your tears by being one of the legends and GOAT players like the Big Four are. The Big Four have gone down in history as the greatest players to have ever played the game and in the future all commentators, historians and players will speak in hushed tones about the incomparable and unsurpassed "Nadal, Murray, Djokovic, Federer" foursome.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 10, 2021 12:08 PM |
R35, Yes, Judy whatever, but the truth is players who are not the big four have way more reasons to cry on the center court

[quote] Don't understand why ESPN clings to Fowler as a tennis commentator.
Someone here once explained it here as Fowler being there to appeal to the casual viewer much like Dick Enberg and Pat Summerall used to. Fowler is no Engbwrg or Summerall though. They learned tennis; Fowler has not and only likes the sound of his own voice bloviating about a sport about which he thinks he’s an expert, even compared to former champions, when he’s anything but.
The poster here put it something like this: Fowler says something like “And there’s Serena Williams!” The casual viewer says “Ah, I know Serena Williams” and feels comforted and comfortable in watching a sport they’re not familiar with. Fowler helps ratings by comforting casual viewers. Enberg and Summerall imparted knowledge and used to help make permanent viewers out of the casual viewers who were familiar with them from baseball and football respectively. They became tennis fans.

A better player would have won 6-2 6-2 over Pliskova. Barty continuously let her back in the match and almost did again at 5-3 in the third but Pliskova's suckiness wouldn't let her.
Stay slamless, Pliskova. Truly the worst #1 on the women's side ever. What horrible behavior by her to cheer every time she hit a lucky shot that dribbled over the net instead of apologizing like players should.

Of all the players on the tour she might be the most fun to hang out and have a beer with. She does seem like a very positive and pleasant presence on the tour.

Who is Ashleigh Barty's boyfriend Garry Kissick?
Garry Kissick is an aspiring professional golfer who works as an irrigation technician for the greens of the Brookwater Golf & Country Club in Brisbane.
Not too much is known about him, but he is a keen Liverpool fan and part of the PGA trainee programme.
The couple met in 2016 when Barty visited Brookwater to play a round of golf.
A year later, they made their relationship public when they attended the John Newcombe awards together.
Kissick also helps Barty out during practice whenever she can, becoming known as her unofficial ball boy.

[quote]Why can't the club actually have someone who played professional tennis as its President instead of just shamelessly kissing royal ass?
Because then the tournament becomes just another Slam on the calendar of Slams. Royalty elevates the caché and prestige of the event, as it does with every event/charity with a royal patronage. Crisp all-white tennis outfits, lush grounds, and tennis-savvy spectators in a club steeped in tradition and excellence. Compare that to the commercialization, the endless screeching train wheels, and heckling crowds of the USO. Both exciting in their own way, but let's face it, Wimbledon is the players favourite.

Asking Barty for Court is really absurd, she is too polite to say what she thinks but i clearly remember being asked about Court when she won Roland Garros and she answering how much she admired Sam Stosur.
If they want to ask her for a classic australian champion, ask her for Goolagong, a player she admired and even played homage this Wimbledon.
For me Barty is the anti Osaka, people call her dull and boring but she is articulate and she gives good interviews but she had zero interest in being a media personality. And she is very classic in her game, with a lot of variety. I'm happy she won.
On the other side i don't mind Plikova winning a GS in the future, she is so sassy and harsh that sometimes makes me root for her. And people can tell what they want about Bajin but he can make a player to have good results

Gulbis just lost 3-6 0-6 to Aussie Christopher O'Connell in the men's Hamburg which starts this weekend. Tsitsipas took a WC and is top seed. I guess he's bored while he waits for the Olympics in a couple weeks. PCB is #2 seed
In Bastad, Ruud is the top seed. Decent field actually. Garin is #2, Fognini is #3, Musetti is #6. They gave a WC to homophobic twink Rune who could face Ruud in the 2nd round

by Anonymous | reply 205 | July 10, 2021 11:47 PM |
Wimbledon is a great tournament, but the tradition fetishists are obnoxious. So is the boasting about how it is the "greatest tournament and most prestigious" and fawning over some random second cousin to the Queen who has never had a job in their life for gracing the tournament and the players with their royal presence.
And the all-white clothing requirement has become more rigid and taken to extreme in recent yeas (tournament officials demanding players change their underwear because it wasn't white). Compare Arthur Ashe's outfit when he won in the 1970s to today's requirements and he wouldn't be allowed to play.

Cincy is the shittiest Master1000 city, with the least amount of tennis fans, where one of the players said "Waffle house is the healthy choice."

by Anonymous | reply 228 | July 11, 2021 1:19 PM |
berrettini should be up 3-0. Instead, it's 2-1 Djokovic since Berrettini keeps making errors when he's ahead in Djoker's service games.

R228 If you have a big serve you should start serving. It was a bad idea and he just lost his serve too soon in the match to make any impact on Nole's game.

Guys like Shapo and Matteo are only 23 - its asking a lot of them to win at this late stage in a slam, completely new to them, where so many failed before. They'll be winning soon enough. (Yes, Becker did it, but not against this sort of opponent.)

by Anonymous | reply 332 | July 11, 2021 4:40 PM |
Another disappointing effort from a young gun in a final. Tsitsipas just went away after being up two sets to none at the French. Berrettini never played any consistently good level in this final, same with Medvedev at the Aussie. At least at the Aussie Djokovic was playing really well. At the French and here he was not his highest level in the finals.
I really hope a young gun STEPS UP at the US Open. We need them to start breaking through.

My jinx pic didn't work.
I'm certainly not a Djokovic fan, but I never expected to see a calendar year men's grand slam in my lifetime especially with Nadal's dominance at the French. That prospect is exciting.

Kate looks great. She is very thin and that pink works for her.
by Anonymous | reply 366 | July 11, 2021 5:04 PM |
Novak gets the wrap he deserves. He’s a great tennis player. Perhaps the best. He’s also got a terrible personality. There’s a reason why crowds cheer his opponents. He’s obnoxious and toxic.
by Anonymous | reply 367 | July 11, 2021 5:05 PM |
So djoko was on cocaine or heroin?
by Anonymous | reply 368 | July 11, 2021 5:06 PM |
Now that he is so close I guess it would be cool to see someone get the calendar slam but it would be awful for the sport if Djokovic continues this dominance into next year.
by Anonymous | reply 369 | July 11, 2021 5:09 PM |
R350, Becker, Wilander and Chang won their first Slam at 17, and Borg won his at 18 compared to Sampras' 19. We don't have any comparable teenage sensations now. It'll be a while before Sinner or FAA become consistent enough to be a real threat at the GS level. Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Rublev, Shapovalov and Zverev are also wildly inconsistent. Thiem is already old in tennis years. Who else is a contender?
by Anonymous | reply 370 | July 11, 2021 5:09 PM |
Agree, R364. Although he's not my favorite player, the Novak haters on this site are unhinged in their hatred of him. I can't stand Nadal, but I'd never get so personal like the Djokovic haters get.
Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are all three great players. Even as a Fed fan, I can admit Djokovic is better overall. I figured a few years ago he'd catch Nadal and Federer and eventually surpass them. Barring some unforeseen breakthrough by the young guns or injury to Djokovic, it's hard not to see him winding up with the most Slams and best career record.
by Anonymous | reply 371 | July 11, 2021 5:10 PM |
Help me please, DL. I am hiding in one of the guest rooms. My husband is throwing and smashing things around the house. He also threw out all my food and told me I will starve. I am so hungry and frightened, DL. He is furious. What do I do?
by Anonymous | reply 372 | July 11, 2021 5:14 PM |
It's who you have to beat, R350. In the age of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, the other men winning their first slams are older than those in the 90s and 2000s: Murray , Wawrinka, Cilic and Thiem were all 25 or older.

R375, that is demonstrably untrue. The players get a longer off-season these days. In the days of boorish Becker and yummy Edberg, the surfaces at Wimbledon and USA Open were also faster, so there was also a lot more adjustment the players had to make when they switched surfaces. Wimbledon started just two weeks after Roland Garros, which made the adjustment even trickier.
These days the surfaces are more homogeneous, the off-season is longer and the players get more time off.
by Anonymous | reply 385 | July 11, 2021 5:30 PM |

R387, that article is laughable. In order to make his argument, he leaves out one of the most polarizing figures in all of sport, the rapist Ronaldo, and conveniently forgets that Jack Nicklaus was hated for much of his career. I could go on and on—one of the most loved Baltimore Ravens was probably a murderer, etc. There are endless examples of genuine bad guys in sports.
by Anonymous | reply 388 | July 11, 2021 5:42 PM |
So much pressure now for Nole to win USO - a calendar year grand slam and most GS wins. That's quite a toll but I still wouldn't bet against him.
