Apparently that's her below but it looks nothing like her.......
The biopic everyone has been waiting for: Jody Watley!

Wake me when [italic]Rick Astley : The Movie[/italic] comes out.

I'll watch this. She had a long career with Shalimar and then was one of the biggest stars around in the late 80's. I still remember her videos - particularly "It's Still a Thrill" in the old Paris opera house.
I don't know what happened - it would be interesting to find out. Stars fizzle out all the time - but something else may have happened.

The picture looks like her. Keep in mind she is 30+ years older!

Loved Jody back in the day. "Still A Thrill" was a favorite:

Has Jody had drama in her life? Like what?

I was thinking the exact same thing, R7.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 9, 2021 3:57 PM |
r6: I actually would love to see a movie about Milli Vanilli.

The problem with Taylor Dayne is that she has no sense of humor or appreciation for her success - or at least she didn't for quite a long time.
Plus she'd have to deal with the persistent lesbian rumors.

I think that should be called Never Gonna Give You Up: The Rick Astley Story, R1.

CNN is working on a ten part documentary of Haircut 100 and their influence on the civil rights movement.

Jody Watley was fabulous, great dance pop music and it still holds up. Unlike Janet Jackson, whose music sounds pretty dated now.
Unfortunately, Jody was part of the 80s purge as music changed in the early 90s. Most 80s artists didn't survive that.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 9, 2021 4:14 PM |
Time to purge the last remaining 1990s relics in retaliation and start clean with real, acoustic, melodic music again.

I'm Looking for a New Love is a pounding, powerful song - like you're walking down a runway to each beat.
My favorite was Don't You Want Me.
Any gay man alive in 87/88 knows that the dancefloors would get PACKED when her songs came on.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 9, 2021 4:20 PM |
I forgot she was one of the few Americans in Band-Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 9, 2021 4:24 PM |
Yes, Jody Watley's music was huge in gay circles back then. It's fantastic dance pop, rivaling even Madonna's output at the time.

I loved Jody Watley's music but I wouldn't go that far R17. That's a bit of a stretch!

Totally agree with R15. I get that it's typical DL snark to bring up people like Rick Astley and Taylor Dayne but I actually don't think those are fair comparisons. Jody Watley didn't have a career like Madonna's or Janet Jackson's but she wasn't some one- or two-hit wonder either. She had quite a few hits back in the day, many of which still hold up quite well today.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 9, 2021 4:37 PM |
R20, that wasn't a hit, toots.

Jody's had a good career. Once the pop landscape changed and she wasn't charting anymore, she went on to tour smaller venues with a live band and always shows up at awards shows. She's had a good career, continues to work and probably lives pretty comfortably. Just because someone's career as a major label pop star goes away faded away doesn't mean they automatically go work at 7-11. And she still looks good!

She was huge when I was in high school. My straight friend was in love with her and used to tell his racist, piece of shit dad that he was going to marry her one day, just to piss him off.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 9, 2021 5:40 PM |
She was on an episode of that Bravo show "Work Out" about 15 years ago. Her trainer then died after contracting salmonella while undergoing chemo for lymphoma, which depleted his immune system.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 9, 2021 5:45 PM |
Will the biopic have any brief mention of her sister porn star Midori?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 9, 2021 6:15 PM |
R29 - I remember that. I used to like that show.
Jody also had a unique beauty - like she had some Asian mix in there because of her eyes.

The earrings. All the girls were wearing those huge hoop earrings back in the day. I still like the look on a hot black woman. White wife beater, sexy-fitting jeans and huge hoop earrings....classic diva uniform.

I think she wrote a lot of material for her follow-up album to Real Love and it just wasn't as good as the stuff songwriters gave her. That coupled with the huge changes in the music industry in the early 90s was why her career stalled.
