New Pew poll shows Trump won 38% of Latino vote

Way more than anyone thought.

Alarming.

LOL, just spin to make Republicans look less racist. Fewer people identify as Republicans than ever

by Anonymousreply 1July 7, 2021 2:03 AM

Latino citizens hate illegal immigration. It’s not complicated.

by Anonymousreply 2July 7, 2021 2:06 AM

It's the machismo thing. Also, what r2 said.

by Anonymousreply 3July 7, 2021 2:10 AM

R2 not only that, they tend to have stronger religious backgrounds and left so called "communist" like governments (that are dictatorships, but billed as socialism.) In some ways, they're also socially conservative.

by Anonymousreply 4July 7, 2021 2:11 AM

Latinos hate black people, too! A lot of Latinos identify as white. A lot of mestizos are pretty damn conservative (old school bootstraps/religious). The only reason Dems carry a majority of the Latino vote is because the Republicans have been so explicitly anti-Latino. Karl Rove tried to fix this 20 years ago and the Repub base told him to knock it off.

by Anonymousreply 5July 7, 2021 2:11 AM

Democrats need to wake up and stop treating minority groups with same paternalistic attitude. They've done that with blacks for decades and it paid off well enough for that group I suppose. But Latino/Hispanic watched, learned and isn't going to roll that way.

It was barely a decade ago democrats and others were predicting solid gains with Latino/Hispanic voters in strong enough numbers to win in heavy GOP strong holds. Worse it was predicted that Latino/Hispanics going forward would give democrats edge they needed to overcome loss of working and some middle class whites. It isn't working out that way, not at all.

The main thing democrats keep rolling out to woo Latino/Hispanic voters (immigration) is also some of the things that is killing them with same demographic. Not every Latino/Hispanic is an illegal and or even one generation removed. For that matter neither are their children who also don't make up huge numbers of "dreamers" either.

by Anonymousreply 6July 7, 2021 2:19 AM

There are blacks in Florida (including many Haitians) who would rather deal with "cracker" whites than Cubans (white-Hispanic). That should tell people something, but few bother to listen.

You can throw in those also (white/European) Argentina, Brazil, and few other south American countries in Florida and elsewhere.

We've had this discussion frequently enough on DL. Anyone who watches telenovelas would be forgiven if they believed POC didn't exist in certain south American countries. And or when they do they're all servants, criminals, buffoons, whores, etc..

by Anonymousreply 13July 7, 2021 2:34 AM

"Apparently they're higher IQ than you think,"

Not really if they're voting for a person and a party that finds them absolutely disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 14July 7, 2021 2:39 AM

R14

Who told you republicans find Latino/Hispanics "absolutely disgusting?", cause it isn't true.

Conservatives aren't thrilled with illegals and illicit immigration, but otherwise by and large many are quite cool with Latino/Hispanic, especially the more European descent sort.

There are tons of Latino/Hispanic in GOP party, and their numbers are growing. Again this will vary by background; the "woke" Latino/Hispanics here in NYC are largely Dominican, South American (Indian), Mexican, etc... Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and others aren't part of that group, and have same sort of often conservative leanings as some whites.

Indeed the whole woke politics when it comes to Latino/Hispanics in good part is being driven by those from Mexico, San Salvador and a few other countries south of the border. Between illegal and legal migration many of these people come from places where government control of doling out resources is endemic. Much of that largely came from various coups or other actions that took from the rich to give to the poor (in theory at least). To wit communism.

Many Cubans in Florida or elsewhere are cool with ending "wet foot/dry foot" or anything else that grants asylum to those arriving from that country. Most if not all the educated "white" professional classes have long fled that place, and subsequently got rest of their family out as well. Now you're getting POC (who always were treated like shit in Cuba), poors and others the former Cuban political and social aristocracy didn't like then, and don't care for them arriving in USA either. In other words one group got theirs, and don't give a fuck about whoever is left in Cuba.

This is nothing new, GOP has spent decades courting Latino/Hispanic voters of certain backgrounds. They needed another group to replace blacks after republicans fought so hard against various civil rights laws that it drove large numbers of AA away from the party. Remember for years African Americans voted with the "party of Lincoln.."

r22 You just described the left in general.

by Anonymousreply 29July 7, 2021 2:07 PM

Latino is a poorly defined word. It's meaning implies everybody who came from Spanish background is alike. WRONG!!

For instance, Cubans are Europeans and not Mexicans. Mexicans and other countries south of Mexico have Native American in them. They are separate cultures and race.

by Anonymousreply 30July 7, 2021 2:16 PM

Wouldn’t it be a kick in the pants if Hispanics, especially the generation born to illegals, ended up voting primarily for the GOP? It does seem like some kind of justice for all the effort by Democrats to protect illegals in order to get their future votes ending up backfiring.

by Anonymousreply 31July 7, 2021 2:23 PM

It's not correct to categorize everyone south of the border in monolithic terms. I see a huge difference between those who seek entry to the US because of inherent social problems that aren't addressed in their home countries. Mexico has an unbelievably sophisticated and worldly upper class but for any number of reasons there is also a peasant class that has never been able to move up the ladder. I despise how harsh the immigrant debate is applied: those from Mexico and Central America are seen as "less deserving" of citizenship than those who claim they are fleeing Communist/Socialist states (as if this is 1958). The countries of South America provide new arrivals who are arch-conservative and whose politics are admiring of strong men who favor the rich, the connected, and the corrupt.

That, and their arch-Catholicism, which makes the fundamental workings of a secular society to a complete standstill.

Dole1996 21%

Bush 2000 35%

Keep in mind that Hispanics historically have extremely low turnout (along with Asians). In 2020 they had historically high turnout. Over 50% of Hispanics voted. Which increased the share that went to Republicans. Democrats always get around 70% of the Hispanic vote.

People misunderstand the government created label. Hispanic is not a race. Hispanics can be any race. The label encompasses a long list of different nationalities. by Anonymousreply 43July 7, 2021 4:26 PM

R5 Its interesting you say Latinos hate black people. If it wasn't for black people, Latinos wouldn't have the rights and opportunities they have in the US today.

After the civil rights movement kicked off in the 50s and went all throughout the 60s and 70s. That open the door for other oppressed groups in the country to bring their own grievances to the for front. Black Americans have always lead the way for righteousness, and everyone loves to shit on them. That's telling though.

Black people have been in what eventually became the United states for centuries, helping to build the white house and the capital building etc. That's serious pedigree, along with all if the other dark history of Black people in America. I will never understand how people can immigrate to another country and decide their going to hate a group of people who literally slaved away building this country for free? Not only that, but voting Republican and helping to erase all of the gains that were hard fought for because you like strong men.

This country is a little to free when they just let anyone come here. How some if these people vote is very dangerous, especially when they have no problem voting for a person like Trump.

The GOP is to be commended for its successful campaign to brand democrats as communists in Florida, it totally worked and helped them win the state. I am still upset about this because I do not see anything being done in the meantime and we have elections in 2022 which is crucial to maintaining control of the house and senate.

As several posters have pointed out here the legal immigrants from the Caribbean and Latin America do not approve of the lefts immigration policy in regards dreamers or amnesty for illegal immigrants. It’s a slap in the face to them because they followed the rules to enter lawfully.

People from Venezuela, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Colombia etc.. tend to be socially conservative. The whole woke movement with its attempt to redefine Latinos as Latinx is offensive to almost all Spanish speaking individuals.

Crime is a big fear of wealthy Latin Americans because in their countries it’s especially bad with corruption, Kidnappings, extortion, murder and theft which is what leads many to flee their countries only to find laws that decriminalize petty thefts in big cities. These voters did not grow up in America and do not have the same perspective we do, they can only reflect on what they know and left behind. They want strong leadership and the GOP feeds that fear.

Democrats will need to spend their campaign money on countering the GOP narrative of what socialism is or risk losing the majority of the Latino voting block which can make or break a presidency. They can’t keep thinking Puerto Rican’s will account for the majority of the Latinos vote.

by Anonymousreply 45July 7, 2021 5:17 PM

It does not matter if it’s a manufactured term the point is that they all equally reject the use of latinx to identify all Latinos. Spanish speakers resent any enforced change to their language or identity.

While Mexicans make up the majority of Latinos nationwide they do not represent that majority in Florida which is more diverse than a states like California or Texas where Mexican ancestry is the majority.

I'm so tired of the lies about this. The media wants something to upset people and get them talking so they push this "Latinos are turning Republican" thing but it's not even true. That demographic didn't turn Republican in 1984 or in 2004, and they won't turn Republican now, either.

R57 McAllen, Texas (South Texas) voted in its first Republican mayor in 40 years. South Texas is more than 80% Latino mostly of Mexican descent. When you examine the NYT's exit polling for South Texas counties in 2016 vs 2020 they voted for Trump in the 40%+ range if I recall correctly.

Henry Cuellar is a Democratic rep is talking about how all the illegal immigration is hurting his constituents in South Texas.

20 years ago, NONE of this would have been possible.

by Anonymousreply 61July 7, 2021 6:58 PM

[quote] Democrats need to wake up and stop treating minority groups with same paternalistic attitude.

by Anonymousreply 62July 7, 2021 7:06 PM

Yes, r61, McAllen voted in a Republican mayor in the early 1980s, at the same time Latinos were voting Republican in larger numbers. That's clear from the link I posted. You're just confirming what I already said, but you're pretending like the numbers for Latinos voting Republican have steadily gone up. THAT is the lie here.

Latinos voted nearly 40% for the Rep candidate in the early 1980s, then that dropped, then back up in 2004, then that dropped, and in 2020 it was back up again.

But it was also up for Dem votes in 2020, too, just a little but still an increase.

There is no consistent voting change over the last 45 years showing Latino votes are becoming more conservative. The vote fluctuates and at its closest in the last 40 years, the Dem vote was still 20 points higher than the Rep vote.

by Anonymousreply 63July 7, 2021 7:12 PM

Latinos aren't becoming more conservative. A larger percentage voted Republican in the last election because Democratic messaging sucks. Illegal immigration, open borders, "Latinx", defuind the police... it's all electoral poison, but Dems keep doubling down on it.

Nobody would dare do this to the French. Let's see how the French respond to being told to butcher their language to appease the whims of some woke Americans.

by Anonymousreply 66July 8, 2021 2:01 AM

Democrats are scrambling to find another group which will replace the large numbers of working class whites, white and other males, and others who are either leaving party or just not voting. Problem is they are all over the place with messaging as democrat party is split in to various groups. The woke/liberal/progressive and darned near socialist (such as AOC and her loon squad) are sucking air out of the room.

Defund LE was the most dumbest political message in US history. It is a wonder Biden was able to win WH at all, but democrats didn't do well as hoped, but hope springs eternal for 2022.

By doubling down on immigration (Pelosi and Schumer plan to make some sort of reform part of massive reconciliation bill coming this fall), one supposes that will energize their "Latino/Hispanic" base and their supporters. If the thing passes and things don't work out that way, democrats will have handed GOP a huge club to beat them over head with not just in 2022, but 2024 elections as well.

by Anonymousreply 67July 8, 2021 2:02 AM

The lockdowns weren't popular. Trump became the "open everything up and go back to work" canddiate while the Democrats got unfairly tagged as the shut everything down party. Trump also just stopped talking about immigration. His advisers realized he'd already won over the anti-immigration voters and they'd never leave him so there was no point talking about that issue anymore especially because doing so drove possible supporters away from him (conservative and rural Latinos).

R61: Cuellar is the most right wing Democrat in Congress, now that Lipinski is gone. He's been right wing for a long time. Him saying that is not the coup you think it is, dear.

"Consequently, large numbers of enslaved Africans continued arriving in Cuba causing the African slave population to grow from about 10-25 per cent in the 18th century to more than 40 per cent by 1840. Cuba became the world’s largest sugar producer, and Havana became the largest market for enslaved Africans in the Caribbean by 1839, importing around 10,000 slaves a year.

Cuba was transformed into a highly structured plantation society with all the attendant class and caste relationships, as well as cruelty towards Africans being routine practice.

The continuing increase in Cuban slavery in the 19th century provoked powerful resistance, which in turn fuelled European reprisals. As a result uprisings continued across Cuba throughout the 1830s. "

R81 idk if you're joking or just misinformed, pew verified that all of the terms of thousands of voters in this report did actually vote, so this is considered (and should be) a kind of highly accurate exit poll (regular exit polls are biased by only capturing people who voted on election day--pew's report does not suffer from this bias and is therefore much more trustworthy).

These colored people are always trying to use social situations to raise their station.

Well duh, Latinos hate communism as it’s destroyed many Latino countries. Many came to the USA to eaxvape that and now all of a sudden all these rich liberals can’t stop talking about how great communism is while using the latest IPhone and getting everything conveniently off of Amazon Prime. Thanks to AOC, We lost Florida who is full of Cubans and Venezuelans who would vote for Satan himself before a communists.

r91 r92 Many black ppl have said that other nonwhites cannot even be compared to them in terms of oppression, victimisation, marginalisation, etc. and therefore cannot belong to the same category as them.

So some use BIPOC (Black Indigenous and the rest) to emphasise them. Others use Black and POC. That's where their "We are not POC" comes from...

The growth of evangelicalism among Latinos is also a huge factor, especially Pentecostalism

by Anonymousreply 100July 9, 2021 1:07 PM

R94 is correct. Pew is considered to be the most accurate analysis of election results. The downside of that is you have to wait months to get their final report.

by Anonymousreply 101July 9, 2021 2:27 PM

Time for gay white men to get organized against these deplorables of color.
