Canadian Gossip - Part 3

Idiot, OP. We were nowhere near being maxed out on Part 2. š
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 6, 2021 11:43 PM |
R2 Part 2 is paywalled, sunshine. Hence the recent lack of replies.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 6, 2021 11:45 PM |
Itās Canada, R3, hence the lack of replies. And I say this as a Canadian.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 6, 2021 11:48 PM |
It's a semi-niche thread/topic but it was updated almost daily, R4. Posting stopped once it got paywalled.

Canada gets itād first indigenous Governor General
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 7, 2021 3:59 AM |
Whatās going on with the creepy Kielburger brothers?? Their joint testimony a few months ago was hilarious.
Has anyone seen Jian lately? I wonder how he spends his days.

Gossip on newly single Connor Jessup? Very handsome and talented.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 7, 2021 5:45 PM |
Any gossip on Nenshi and Bowman? They have both got to be gay.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 7, 2021 8:30 PM |
R6, Mary Simon seems like a decent choice for Governor General. Her only drawback is that she doesn't speak French.
R8, do we know why Connor Jessup & Miles Heizer broke up?
R9, Nenshi definitely pings. Maybe he didn't come out while he was Mayor of Calgary because Alberta is still very conservative. And Bowman pings, too, although he's married to a woman and has kids.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 8, 2021 9:45 AM |
Mary Simon speaks Inuktitut. Maybe it's time to recognize Canada's indigenous population.

WTF is going on with the Greens? I'm saddened and very disappointed. They're my party! I hole they're organized enough to run a candidate in every riding.

I hope the NDP lose every seat next provincial election in Ontario. As just one example, Suze Morrison is a horrible MPP in Toronto Centre. Her staff doesnāt return calls or emails. Iāve also heard complaints from community organizations. Hopefully, the ridingās Liberal candidate, David Morris wins.

OāToole gave supporters and other party insiders taxpayer-funded contracts
By David Akin
July 22
Individuals and entities connected with O'Toole's leadership campaign won $237,00 worth of taxpayer-funded contracts from O'Toole's office during his first six months in office.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 24, 2021 10:12 AM |
I don't care that O'Toole hired his buddies, all politicians, including Trudeau do this. The problem is his hypocrisy. I hear that the knives are out for him already and that his own party hates him.

Not gossip, but Ford vowed today that students will return to schools in the fall. He even joked that heāll drive them if he has to. I thought that was kind of a bold statement to make with school more than a month away. Things could change drastically between now and then.

R58 Leece is not closeted, he's gay but he not vocal about it (likely due to his leadership aspirations) it's not an open secret. He has been involved in the small gay wing of the PC party, and has also attended pride events and abstained from a vote granting university status to Canada Christian College. There are a ton of rumours about his time at Western. One guy has spoken on record about allegedly being sexually assaulted by Leece. There are also rumours that the CBC have heard from other men but haven't reported it because it's really a he said/he said.
R59 Major rumours about Oosterhoff too. On Twitter some men have come forward claiming having being hit on by Oosterhooff...there is one story from a guy who alleges that Oosterhoff attempted to grab his dick in the men's room in the Indigo and Yonge/Eg in Toronto.

Not buying that Leece is gay, sorry.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | July 27, 2021 7:41 PM |
Folks, weāre gonna have the best reopening plan for schools in the fall. We have the best Minster of Education and Chief Medical Officer in Canada working round the clock to get kids back in class. This September Iāll drive and teach em myself if I have to. The teachersā unions and their friends in the opposition need to stop fear mongering. I wonāt support a vaccine passport.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | July 27, 2021 7:49 PM |
Doug, why won't you support a vaccine passport or record of immunization against Covid? Manitoba and Quebec have them and things are going well in those provinces. Aren't Brian and FranƧois your buds? Talk to them.

The guy in question is fellow Quebecois actor TheĢodore Pellerin who is part of the main cast of "On Becoming a God in Central Florida." TheĢo is nearly 12 years his junior, and Connor Jessup and Xavier Dolan also follow him on Instagram.
As of 2 days ago they were still liking and commenting each other's posts, so they're probably still together.

Sometimes it almost seems like the ndp in ontario is fully in cahoots with the pc party, based on their utter political ineptitude slash inability to get their message across, and -most importantly-pick a leader who can actually win! Andrea has proven time and again for YEARS to be an unelectable vegetable lasagna candidate! Why on earth wonāt they hire proper political consultants who can vet viable leaders!?
by Anonymous | reply 103 | July 29, 2021 5:44 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 116 | July 29, 2021 11:47 PM |
R113 Payette's Order of Canada is not being revoked. As R116 sates, a member of the public filed a request to have her membership within the order reviewed. It's unlikely it will be taken away, unless she's charged with a crime or something. She may have been a boss from hell, but she was an accomplished astronaut and I don't think being a bitch is enough grounds to be removed.

R118 Alberta is trash outside Edmonton which almost exclusively votes NDP, but the rest of the province is TRASH.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | July 30, 2021 5:13 AM |
R120, how do you figure Edmonton votes NDP? All their MPs are cons aside from one so there's clearly a lot of conservative trash there too. I agree it's more progressive than the rest of the province, but that's not saying much.

by Anonymous | reply 126 | July 30, 2021 4:36 PM |
R126, the Liberals won Windsor-Tecumseh in 2019, so the NDP actually lost one of their Windsor seats.
But you're right that it may be challenging for Pupatello to win Windsor West against long-time NDP MP Brian Masse.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | July 31, 2021 9:34 AM |
[quote]Why on earth wonāt they hire proper political consultants who can vet viable leaders!?
Two reasons... the leadership process is always grassroots driven, so only party loyalists, kooks, and other no hopers select the leader. Purity tends to come into it, for the right and the left. Arguably, for example, Peter MacKay would have been a (marginally I guess) better choice for the federal Conservatives but he they got Erin the Toole instead. What's 'er face Elliott would have been a better (more mainstream) choice for the provincial Conservatives in Ontario, but they got Doug. (Though I think Elliott proved herself close to useless in the pandemic.)
Second reason, the lefties are generally on a mission. They're less in it for themselves and more for their view how society should be structured. So they are less prone to corruption but more prone to very impractical and very dogmatic. And they really struggle with tone. They talk down to the majority, they scold, they wag their fingers. They would far rather be right (correct) than be in power so they struggle to moderate their views to reflect an electorate and get enough votes to win. That's shown increasingly at the federal level. Add up the Liberals and the NDP and you get a majority, but within the ranks the NDP can't draw enough Liberal support to prevail.
It's also why a union of the parties, in my view, would fail (and help the Conservatives, which would be awful.) The factions within the ranks will spend all their time on internal fights and undercut their credibility. The media will eat it up and report it and the harmful shitshow will make the Conservatives look good in comparison. In the end I don't think Canadians want particularly grand visions. They want competence and sensible compassion. That's why federally the more centrist Liberal party has won so many elections and is still called the natural governing party. Personally, when I vote, I vote Liberal. It's the safest bet. I'm not voting this election, nor are a number of my friends, because Trudeau's such a dipshit.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | July 31, 2021 12:19 PM |
R128, a good overall analysis of Canadian political parties. Trudeau is flawed, but he's still the best alternative to keep the Conservatives out.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | July 31, 2021 12:30 PM |
Yes, R129. I suspect they will win. No idea if it's a majority or not. Doubt it. Which will force him to depart sooner rather than later. Maybe that would be the best outcome for us. Liberals back, the great poet with much more time for pilates and pontificating. Freeland or Carney would be great alternatives. It's time for a smart woman, so I have a slight preference for Freeland. I will vote Liberal if there seems risk but my MP (Liberal, in Toronto) is safe, so I can with hold my vote in protest of that pompous ass... he's like a woke set of bagpipes to me, which I could live with, if I thought he was up to the job, but I don't. Between his WE values and his first thought of faculty lounge optics, I don't think he's up to the job. There's better choices.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | July 31, 2021 12:36 PM |
Trudeau will win, not out of any great love for him but because most Canadians see the alternatives as worse.

Doesn't surprise me. The Liberals are the least of the evils. The shambles of the Conservatives and the Greens make them look even better. Good they have a sizeable lead... it is apt to narrow by election day.

Adam Vaughan (Spadina-Fort York)

Vaughan is a bit of a surprise. McCrimmon is retiring for health reasons. Amos is less of a surprise after his naked Zoom/peeing scandal during the virtual House of Commons session.

Election prediction 1: when it is over, another Liberal minority, and Trudeau will be gone by June of next year, announcing departure at Christmas.
Election prediction 2: the call is this Sunday, unless....
Election prediction 3: they panic and decide to wait until next spring. The fourth wave is gathering the steam and the unnecessary election meme isn't far behind. That's harmful to your prospects. If it isn't called within a week, they're not going to go.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | August 12, 2021 2:24 PM |
New poll says 2/3 of Canadians don't want a federal election right now. It's funny, one thing the Liberals do that's bad is drag their feet. They could have got the border open in both directions in June, according to some reporting, but dragged their feet. Then made the odd decision to open without joint agreement, essentially surrendering negotiating power or at least position. They've been letting election talk percolate for a month, and now it is going boomerang. They were consistently criticized for dithering on aspects under their control during the pandemic: border closure, airpots, inbound flights from hot spots. This lot has an odd sense of timing and there are enough examples of timing issues that it could be effectively messaged as a theme, which won't help them.

by Anonymous | reply 169 | August 12, 2021 3:58 PM |
Yeah, I think he's nuts. People seem so emotional. I live in the heart of Toronto... I can't tell you the number of neighbours and friends who would vote Liberal but just can't stand him (which isn't to say they won't vote Liberal but they aren't voting Justin.)
I talked a to consultant friend last night who, despite (and with great reluctance) is doing public consultations in more rural Ontario. He said the volatility and anger there, especially about Torontonians who've left this nightmare of a city and driven up real estate and other prices in the process, is huge.
They are making their calculation on the polls - and obviously nuanced polling that we will never see - but I predict two things: the most volatile election and electorate in a long time and, at the end, another minority. Perhaps the NDP makes enough gains to take the Opposition. But I don't think much changes. Trudeau will have to step down after leading to two minorities in a row.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | August 12, 2021 4:06 PM |
I think you're 100% right. It'll be another Lib minority.

Me too. I loathe Justin but I don't want a Conservative government. NDP governments always worry me because the leader might be strong but I worry about the experience of the Cabinet. I lived through the Rae years. Great regard for Bob Rae, but the no talents and idealists that came with him... Christ, what a mess. They inadvertently paved with way for the odious Mike Harris Conservatives, who were worse in the opposite way.

by Anonymous | reply 173 | August 12, 2021 4:14 PM |
Justin is making a mistake calling an election right now. I think the liberals will win only because most voters (at least in seat rich Ontario) think the alternative is worse. The thing is, he's in a minority government, all he has to do is put forward a bill he knows the opposition won't support and then he can blame them for the election, but by calling one himself, he can't escape is something bad happens e.g. spike in cases.

by Anonymous | reply 177 | August 12, 2021 4:32 PM |
I'm with R175. Dumb call. Their sense of timing is catastrophic. Their understanding of how thing changes in COVID time is pathetic. The NDP will profit from this - and the Liberals could suffer from that doubly - the NDP could drain enough votes in a riding to put a Conservative over the top. Toronto will be fascinating to watch this time... will the young run to the NDP... are there enough moderates to hold the Liberal positions?
I am not intending to vote, as protest. They haven't earned my vote and don't deserve it. But, if my MP seems at risk, I will hold my nose and vote Liberal. I may need reconstructive surgery I am holding it so hard.

Panelist on CBC just raised a good point - what if something happens where the government has to make a decision while parliament is suspended? The guy is a conservative strategist, but still, he's not wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 179 | August 12, 2021 4:43 PM |
The country still has a government. It's just in an election campaign to determine the next parliament, which could result in a change of government.
What the poet does Sunday is ask the Governor General to dissolve the current parliament for an election. If Parliament needed to be summoned again by the Governor General.
The so-called caretaker convention came into effect when the election is called. Under our Westminster system, during an election campaign the government must refrain from making significant decisions related to policy, spending or appointments. The routine business of government goes ahead, managed largely by the public service. In case of a national emergency, a caretaker government can take action, but it's expected to do so in consultation with the opposition parties. Why? Because during an election it is unclear whether a government enjoys the confidence of the House of Commons ā the acid test for governance in Canada.
by Anonymous | reply 180 | August 12, 2021 4:51 PM |
It's actually not a good point. It is a woeful ignorance on behalf of someone purporting to speak with knowledge about government in Canada.
Then again, it's a Conservative, so....
by Anonymous | reply 181 | August 12, 2021 4:52 PM |
Thanks, R180. I knew there'd be a workaround, but still, seems like a pain in the ass and a risk with the fourth wave on the way.
What doesn't make sense is why Trudeau is doing this, aside from thinking he'll get a majority. The NDP has played ball with him since 2019, so has the Bloc, so what's the point aside from him being greedy and wanting a majority?
I actually hope things stay the same. I like a Liberal minority with the NDP having to pull them a bit left. Otherwise, "Liberal, Tory, same old story."
by Anonymous | reply 182 | August 12, 2021 5:01 PM |
We're in the fourth wave. The opportunism is why the polling advantage will narrow. Front page of the Star: 2/3 respondents don't want an election.
This shows a disregard that will also revive the old Liberal arrogance canard. I have no idea what he's thinking, except it proves my bias: nice ass, but he lacks the maturity and wisdom to be PM.
by Anonymous | reply 183 | August 12, 2021 5:06 PM |
He missed the window of opportunity. He should've called the election at the end of June or early July when Canadians were far more optimistic about the summer and fall. It's clear with the delta variant we are headed into another shitty few months and as R183 says, the polls will narrow. I still think he'll win but not convinced it'll be a majority.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | August 12, 2021 6:10 PM |
I love how Liberal partisans on Twitter are justifying this when they've ripped on some of the provinces that had elections during Covid. Does Trudeau think that the people in BC are going to turn out while the entire area is on fire and multitudes have been displaced? I just get what he's thinking....
According to CBC, Elections Canada has been informed that they will not be able to use schools and community centres as polling locations.
I predict a low voter turnout with the same results we have now - a Liberal minority. If I didn't hate the Cons so much, I'd say Trudeau deserves to be punished and lose.

by Anonymous | reply 187 | August 12, 2021 6:52 PM |
R187 Yup the Liberals are counting on people who are voting for them simply because they're not the conservatives to deliver a majority. I think they'll get a minority. Poll showing huge leads pre-election usually mean nothing.
by Anonymous | reply 188 | August 12, 2021 7:04 PM |
And that's the cycle they keep us in, R187. Remember how Trudeau promised that 2015 would be the last first past the post election? That didn't happen. He did not say, "I'll try," he promised and did not deliver.
I refuse to fall for the Liberals attitude of "you have to vote for us or else scary Conservatives will get in." They have pulled that for years and I voted out of fear for years too. This time, I'm voting with my morals instead of fear, not to help out Justin one more time. I'll be voting Green, and if there is no Green candidate, in my riding, I'll vote NDP. I'm not buying into the conservative boogeyman that the Liberals always try and skate by on, especially since this election is not necessary. My aunt and cousins are sick of it too, and she lives in a currently conservative riding that is showing a tight race between Libs and Cons.
I do not hate Trudeau, I think he's been a "just okay" PM. I hate the rabid online trolls that make up shit about him when there is plenty of legitimate things to criticize him on. Those are the issues that I care about and that's how I'm going to vote. Why do Canadians always settle for mediocrity? "Meh, Justin isn't that great, but he's better than so and so." I'm done with that shit.
Look at it this way, IF, the Liberals lose, then maybe, just maybe, they'd learn a lesson and change. Would suck for now, but might be better for the long run. People have to demand better.
by Anonymous | reply 189 | August 12, 2021 7:13 PM |
[quote]Why do Canadians always settle for mediocrity?
I don't know if it's a uniquely Canadian thing or a parliamentary system thing but I feel it's usual governments in Canada are voted out, not voted in. It isn't very often people are truly excited by a party, but, rather, punishing the incumbent. Look at Kathleen Wynne... Ontario basically vomited her up when the alternative was Doug Ford.
by Anonymous | reply 190 | August 12, 2021 7:19 PM |
R190 it's the first past the post system we use to elect governments. The popular vote is also more narrow, but because of the electoral system a party only needs about 35% of the popular vote to get all the power. If we had a more proportional system, we'd likely more often than not have NDP-Liberal coalition governments. This is why Trudeau failed at his promise at electoral reform. If we switched to a more representative system, the Liberals (Nor the conservatives) would ever hold majority power again.
by Anonymous | reply 191 | August 12, 2021 7:24 PM |

I agree the Liberals form the government... likely a minority with the NDP having a good shot at opposition.
What struck me reading The Star yesterday was that the Conservative platform could be mistaken for reasonable. That may have the effect of strengthening the NDP showing in ridings where the Liberals would be more likely to win. I also think you'll see a handful of Toronto ridings turn NDP, esp where the condo crowd dominate, and the lower income.

Patrick Brown disqualified from Conservative leadership race
CBC News
Jul 05, 2022 11:27 PM ET
With two months to go before the Conservative Party chooses its next leader, Patrick Brown has been ejected from the race over allegations he broke financing rules.
Brown's campaign quickly fired back, saying in a statement early Wednesday that his disqualification is unfounded and an attempt to ensure his rival Pierre Poilievre wins the race. It added it would consult its legal team.
The bombshell news came in a statement released late Tuesday night by the party's leadership election organizing committee, which said Brown was being disqualified from the race after "serious allegations of wrongdoing" related to financing rules.
"We regret having to take these steps but we have an obligation to ensure that both our party's rules and federal law are respected by all candidates and campaign teams," said the statement from Ian Brodie, head of the Conservative Party's Leadership Election Organizing Committee, which oversees the race.
Those involved did their best to be fair to Brown and his campaign, Brodie said, giving them time to substantively refute the allegations.
"None of these problems has any impact on the integrity of the vote itself," he said, adding the party will share the information it has with Elections Canada.

Brian Pallister also called antivaxxers idiots, unlike certain conservative politicians who said everyone's point of view should be respected.
by Anonymous | reply 245 | July 17, 2022 6:58 AM |
Pallister is an old-fashioned Progressive Conservative, R245. He loves money and tax cuts, but he's not a science denying moron who tried to appeal to rubes. People with money like him, not hillbillies. I don't think he'd like Pierre Poilievre - remember how he made that dramatic plea for families to limit their gatherings at Christmas?? PP would hate that.
by Anonymous | reply 246 | July 17, 2022 7:08 AM |
True R246. Poilievre has a bit of that "freedom of choice trumps all other considerations" ideology that many blue collar conservatives like. I'm glad Pallister spoke his mind about antivaxxers and didn't play politics, trying to appeal to everyone.

Will Glen Murray be re-elected mayor of Winnipeg? I doubt it. He's likable but he's not the kind of really clever, skilled politician who impresses people. His luster has worn off. People will want someone knew.
by Anonymous | reply 248 | July 17, 2022 7:18 AM |
It's too bad Pallister isn't running for leader of the Conservatives. I don't like his politics, but he is respectable unlike most other Conservatives. Then again, he's actually a Progressive Conservative, not GOP of the North.
by Anonymous | reply 249 | July 17, 2022 7:22 AM |
I have a lot of friends and family in Winnipeg and none of them think he'll win, R248. I didn't know this, but he left mid-term last time. Also, a lot of people seem to think that he's trying again for mayor because his political career died in Ontario and lost his bud to become leader of the Greens.
by Anonymous | reply 250 | July 17, 2022 7:24 AM |
Yeah, the kind of conservatives that like Pallister are rich ones, R247, totally different type of person than PP supporters who hate Pallister because of all the covid measures he put in. Meanwhile, rich old ladies love BP because they felt he was protecting them.

True, R250. He left Winnipeg for Ontario to move on to bigger and better things. He didn't go as far politically as he had hoped, so now he's back in Winnipeg, trying to get his old job back.
by Anonymous | reply 252 | July 17, 2022 7:36 AM |
Yeah, I think the city might hold that against him, R252. I like Glenn, but yeah, he's just sort of trying to score any political career at this point. Who knows though, he may win. I don't know anything about the other candidates or what the people think of them.

R276 He retired. Basically a few years ago Alder declared he was no longer a conservative and said he felt the Conservative Party has become a fringe far right wing group. Afterwards, the ratings to his radio show dropped and apparently he was getting death threats and basically at 67 he just decided to take his pension and retire.

In August, a hotel employee noticed something amiss with the framed original print of Winston Churchill's "Roaring Lion" portrait that was on public display since 1998 (photographer Karsh who had his studio and lived at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier for decades donated the famous print to the hotel). Turns out the portrait is a fake in a similar but slightly smaller frame, and based on tourist photos, the swap occured around eight months earlier.

by Anonymous | reply 282 | August 28, 2022 7:36 PM |
r274, r275 of course, everything now has to be politicized. It's a common business tactic to fire or "not renew the contract" of long time employees who will be maxing out pay scales, and/or asking for big raises or incentives. Bell Media (and all media, really) has done that to other media personalities throughout its network, including women. [side note: this is also SOP amongst the lower middle/working classes in Ontario, and has been for decades. Funny how this topic is only being discussed now in a UMC, 'intersectional' context, i.e. gender, age.]
Is her boss a misogynist dick? Maybe, maybe not. Did it have anything to do with her dismissal? Again-maybe, maybe not. It probably had more to do with a power struggle. She had no problem with this system for the what 30+yrs of her broadcast career. That includes not being able to unilaterally change your appearance. Like it or not, that matters to ratings and that's well known. I can think of two other white, male personalities who were subject to this. The idea that she's being "classy" about this is just bullshit--she's letting others fight her battles, because she's hedging her bets. She also knows that the entire system is rotten and that she was a part of it for decades. It wouldn't be good for her future career to be in a twitter exchange with someone who points that out.
In fairness, I hate Lisa LaFlamme as an anchor and her phony, patronizing comments at the end of news segments, but I still think the above is fair comment.

Justin Trudeau will stick around as leader for the next election:
Sep 7 2022
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told his federal Liberal cabinet Wednesday that he is staying on to fight in the next election, the Star has learned.
Trudeau addressed speculation about his political future behind closed doors at a cabinet retreat in Vancouver, according to several sources with knowledge of the discussion.

by Anonymous | reply 288 | September 8, 2022 3:51 PM |
r287 big mistake. The Nova Scotia inquiry didn't do him any favours, nor I imagine will the outcome of the Emergencies Act hearings. The latter is more serious because of the potential human rights violations involved.
by Anonymous | reply 289 | September 9, 2022 12:47 AM |
R288/R289, it's risky for Trudeau to run for a 4th term, but I would never count him out. Chrystia Freeland doesn't seem ready to take over as leader, and there's no guarantee that any of the other Liberal contenders could do better than Trudeau. It's possible Trudeau can win another Minority Government against Poilievre if his policies come across as too conservative.

R344 is correct that Mulroney was strong on the issue of fighting apartheid -- he and Margaret Thatcher were at odds over that. She was reluctant to take a strong position against it. And for a Conservative he was ahead of his time on the environment.
But his overall policies resulted in the destruction of the old Progressive Conservative party in 1993 and led to the rise of the more right-wing Reform Party and today's Republican-lite Conservative Party.
