Private Eye reported a while ago that they'd basically been living separate lives for quite a while, with Phil living at his own place somewhere, but covid forced them to live together. So getting free of him was probably a relief.

Worrying about an ailing and declining spouse for years can be burdensome. I know a few people who have said that when their spouses died they began sleeping well for the first time in a long time. There is sorrow of course but relief is a natural feeling too.

What r17 said.
Nobody should feel guilty if they enjoy a sense of freedom after your spouse, parent, partner dies especially after they were old and ill for a long time.
And even if they weren't old and ill.
"Life goes on" is a cliche, but the truth of those 3 words exceeds whatever triteness they possess.
After I'm dead, I don't want my family grieving and I have to believe that old, crusty, Prince Phillip, wanted her to "get on with it".

The Queen (as a devout Christian) undoubtedly believes that she will be reunited with Phillip in the afterlife after her own death. In the meantime, she still has her public duties, which she has believed in all her life, and unlike many old people, she is constantly made to feel that she is useful and important.
Phillip was old and ill for a long time, and neither he nor she have ever been overly sentimental. Life for such people is to be gotten on with. No pining or complaining when troubles intrude on a privileged life She’s acting as Phillip would expect her to act.

The fact is, when you don't have much runway left, losing a year of your life is a lot. And yeah, I think she is both relieved Phil is "in a better place" and she and Phil had a great un. This happened to my father after my stepmother died froma years-long bout with cancer.
It's not that she's happy that her spouse gone, but rather that she is relieved after having to stop worrying about him. She's known for years he was at the end of his life and suffering, and like most people married to very ill dying people, she wanted his suffering to come to an end since there was nothing she could do about it.
She is still active and she still has a social life. She's very close with Sophie and Edward and their children, and has people to talk to. Why not enjoy her remaining years of life?

Yes, "I hear her hair has turned quite gold from grief" is one of the best lines from The Importance of Being Earnest and the reply is "It certainly has changed its color, from what cause I, of course, cannot say."
At the time, only actresses, prostitutes and women of loose morals dyed their hair. Remember Mammy seeing Belle Watling and saying to Scarlett "Does you know a dyed hair woman?" The subtext was "You know a whore?"

Interesting. Here’s my take on it. Kinda long, so 🖕🏽off if you don’t wanna read it yet wanna opine from the peanut gallery about my lengthy screed.
Lol!
R22, what a lovely and interesting outlook you have regarding death.
My grandmother passed when I was in my early 30s.
VERY old photos of her reveal that she was a beautiful young woman with black wavy hair all the way down to her back, with one prominent and completely gray streak of it on the right side of her center part, which she usually pinned up as ladies did back in her era.
She wore tasteful and well tailored clothing she sewed for herself, and she taught me how to sew, too.
She was “saved” or born again, without having gone to church or being called to participate in some shame inducing, overly theatric performance from the church alter. Instead, she read the Bible quietly to herself every afternoon while sitting on her rocking chair, perched upon her front porch. One hot summer afternoon, she inadvertently rocked herself to sleep, and as she describes it, had a dream that Jesus came to her and asked if she would allow him to live inside her heart, and she answered, “Yes”.
She was a very simple woman when it came to matters of the heart, which also made her quite naive, but from my perspective, her naïveté was never to her detriment because my grandmother was so simple, that she was all love. Pure, open love.
Fortunately, she directed much of her move towards me, and was my safe harbor in many of my storms, aka: non-idyllic childhood. Because of her, I had no clue how shitty my interpersonal family dynamics and relationships with highly dysfunctional family members, were, and some remain as such.
Anyhow, every time I think I’ve lost the ability to just openly trust and love, I remember that she was my own little personal “savior”, because she unabashedly just loved and I, the squeaky wheel, always got the grease. Lol.
When she unexpectedly died, everyone was somewhat astonished that I had zero grief at her passing, being that I was the closest to her in our family, and she was the closest to me, as well.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | July 9, 2021 2:11 PM |
Continued from R108:
A relative who flew out for her funeral asked me why I was so happy and why I wasn’t apparently grief stricken, and I answered that I didn’t know.
The question stuck with me as the day advanced, and eventually, as I drove away from Forrest Lawn and back into West Hollywood I grappled with an entirely new way of facing loss, which I didn’t expect, yet had no reason to question it until I was asked the question.
I eventually made it home, walked into my apartment and the phone rang almost immediately. It was a friend of mine working in Italy at the time, and I explained to him what had transpired earlier.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | July 9, 2021 2:15 PM |
Continued from R109:
As I was telling him the story, I answered the question.
I did not grieve my beloved grandmother because we had as perfect of a relationship as two human beings could ever hope to have. There was NEVER, EVER any screaming, judgement, bullying, shaming, rage, or anger. Ever. All I ever got from my grandmother was unconditional love and all I have back to her was exactly the same she so freely offered me.
My grandma did not do this suddenly, as many do, when realizing that life really is too short and perhaps there are 10 to 5 years left. She did this from the time I was pulled out of my mother until the day she died. She was this way with everyone, and the woman genuinely didn’t have any character flaw that anyone, familiar or strangers, could hold against her. She never proselytized to anyone, myself included, and she not once, called me a foul name or treated me like a POS when I was profoundly struggling with alcoholism/addiction. And her generosity of spirit abounded to all, so she was never untrue to herself.
She was just a simple gal. A simple gal who’s unexpected death taught me that for me, loving someone unconditionally, and she allowing me to do this as well towards her, bore no sting or deep grief, because it was a perfect love.
When we allow ourselves to love others in this way, without fear or censorship, and when we do not construct walls of fear between ourselves and others, allowing them to love us back grief just doesn’t exist. Why? Because an open and loving heart cannot loathe, fear and despise at the same time it is abounding with love and acceptance of all things and of others as they are, and not as expectations which we ourselves set up, in order to stay safe and unable to love or be loved , favored by those of us who never had the true opportunity to experience love as the simplest yet most powerful bond we have with one another.
There was a time when people understood this. There was a time when communities or tribes saw each other as vital and essential parts of each-other’s lives, and death was just another journey made with those who were living respected as an honor rather than as gut wrenching loss.
The Queen looks like she is out there, in her little pink, tweed Chanel coat and decorative pin, loving all things and people unconditionally, which is when true happiness is finally realized. She has accepted herself and those around her, and appears to appreciate them with great generosity and wisdom. Which is why I never believe any of the bullshit stories I read about her alleged disappointment with her grandson, Harry. Harry is who he is and became who he became because behind the scenes, he had a grandmother who chose to love him unconditionally, rather than to give him a ton of shit and belittle him. Which is why he is able to march to the beat of his own drum and proudly so.
You become this way when someone loves you no matter what. And believe me when I say that throughout all of the shit these boys went through with their mother’s death and the scrutiny from the world, one was able to find his own way home into the heart of his little family.
Do not be afraid, Cunts. Remember when shit gets really messy, that yiu still have an opportunity to love others unconditionally if only you stop trying to make unconditional love, conditional. Love isn’t a negotiation. It’s very simple, much like my grandma. And either you experience it unconditionally which is self realization, or you experience heartache and loss because you were too busy expecting something in return for that love. That’s not love. That’s coercion and codependency.
Yuck. 🤮

And Tom Cruise, unmentioned in the caption, with some woman I don't recognize.

I think the Queen is mentally sharp enough that she will confirm Edward as the Dewk of Edinburgh within the next month or two. Watch. Then the Mail can claim she did it to spite Charles Charles is going to be the fucking King. He will have plenty of titles to pass aound to little Pince Louis and the rest. This was his father's wish and creatng the youngest brother as Dewk won't killl him. What a petty spiteful little shit he is.. Good thing Ed and Sophie signed that lease. Charles would pobably attempt to evict them.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | July 14, 2021 2:10 PM |
Isn't Charles in effect the Duke of Edinburgh, r171? This story about how Charles will supposedly deny Edward the title comes with no supporting "sources" and just seems a bit made up.
Edward is hugely involved in the Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme, so it would make sense for him to take the title as well. If Charles seriously doesn't want it to go to Edward, then that is presumably because then it would go to Edward's son and in a generation or so there would be yet another royal Duke who is very much outside of the group of senior royals.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | July 14, 2021 2:29 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 175 | July 14, 2021 4:54 PM |
Titles of nobility are governed by both historical precedent and statute (can't remember which one, and Google wasn't immediately helpful). Even the monarch cannot remove a ducal title once bestowed, unless the current holder is convicted of treason. And even then the process is long-winded and requires an independent enquiry to be set up to make recommendations to the monarch, who then has to formally lay those recommendations before the Privy Council. As eldest son, Charles automatically became The Duke of Edinburgh upon his father's death, and nothing could prevented that short of primary legislation enacted before Prince Philip became an ex-person.
Charles could, in theory, disclaim the title for both himself and his heirs, but that opens up a legal minefield. A minority opinion is that the title would then fall to Andrew as the next eldest (who could then similarly disclaim so that the title fell at last to Edward), but the majority opinion is that the title would fall dormant (but not become extinct) until Charles becomes King.
All titles possessed by the Heir Apparent become extinct upon accession to the Throne, meaning that they can be re-created at the new monarch's pleasure. This is., presumably, what the Queen expects Charles to do. There is no suggestion, other than one unsourced rumour, that he intends to do otherwise; as far as I am aware, Charles is as fond of Edward as he despises Andrew. What he *could* do, in line with his desire to slim down the Royal Family, is to create Edward as Duke of Edinburgh with a life peerage, meaning that his children will not inherit. That way, the title would be extinct again on Edward's death and able to be recreated by William if he so wishes.
No doubt we won't find out what happens until it actually *does* happen. And it isn't really all that important, anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 176 | July 14, 2021 5:27 PM |

On the continent, The Queen of Denmark is a famous chainsmoker with yellow teeth to show for it. The Grimaldi princesses obviously smoke, by the looks of them. Queen Maxima looks like she’d be a smoker, as does her husband King Willem-Alexander. The King of Norway is a former smoker, I don’t think he still does because of his health problems. Queen Annemarie of Greece is probably a smoker like her sister Queen Margrethe.

R186, it just occurred to me. From the moment she was born, Elizabeth has never had to dress or bathe by herself. She was always attended. No wonder she has lived so long. For decades she has daily, gone out doors to walk, ride horses and play with her dogs. Her passion is her horses and she enjoys that whole "country woman " vibe. When she's home at the palace she walks miles of hallways evey day in those vast ooms. She never lifts a finger to do anything and the little people think it's wondeful to see he outdoos gilling with the family at Balmoal duing he summe beak. She has egula canstant medical attention, a living example of how abstemious habits, and exercise with regular preventive maintenance can get us all to 100. She is never alone. Mentally sharp, and enjoys the deference and respect of dozens of people daily.
by Anonymous | reply 188 | July 15, 2021 11:11 AM |
R188, she has also had her every move scrutinised since 1936 (at the latest). She has never been able to express an opinion on anything much without it being discussed. She has, at times been regarded by a hysterical press and public as coldly inhuman, especially when she had the temerity to think that seclusion at Balmoral may be better for William and Harry than parading them in front of crowds of hysterics in London who had never even met their mother.
She has to meet some of the most murderous creatures on the planet, and pretend that they are normal people. People defer to her, but that must bring with it a sense of alienation. If people believe you are above them, then you always stick out.
Imagine how it must be to know that hundreds of millions of people across the planet are watching a dramatised version of your life for entertainment. That dramatists enjoy writing about the death of your father, your possibly fraught relationships with your children, your position at the head of an institution with an uncertain future. Imagine getting to the end of your life, and being able to read thousands of reviews of your achievements and failures.
The miracle is that she seems fairly well-adjusted and reconciled to the life she leads, deeply weird as it is. Most people would be sick of it after a few years, let alone nine decades.

The other day, there was a woman celebrating her 100th birthday in a park near my apartment. She was in a wheelchair and looked catatonic. I couldn’t help but compare her to Queen Elizabeth who walks herself around and engages in conversation with people.
Of course, I don’t know if QE will make it to 100, or what kind of life the wheelchair granny led.
Anyway, the Queen is looking very chipper, and good for her. She has an important purpose, and that often makes the difference.
by Anonymous | reply 190 | July 15, 2021 4:10 PM |
Was re-watching the Crown last night and there was a scene in season 3, Where the vile Tommy Lascelles tore into very young Margaret. It seems Elizabeth didn't want to be queen, would rather not be famous and so forth, but wanted to just hang out with her dogs and horses. And Margaret said, "I'll do it! I would love to be queen and be at the center of attention." And Elizabeth liked the idea, and agreed Margaret would be better at it than she would. So with Elizabeth's encouragement, Margaret went to ask about it, and Tommy ripped her a new one told her it was her lot in life to always serve and it was Elizabeth's to be queen, Elizabeth would always be center stage and Margaret woud always be in the wings. and any suggestion of anything different was a sacrilege. Elizabeth was esigned fom a young age, and constantly schooled about he duty. But even moe impotant, it was drilled into her head that she was not a celebrity. The monachy is sacred. Anointed by the Archbishop with holy oil, head of the chuch of England. Her Gandmother told her that. So being very religious, or at least faith- based, Elizabeth never looked at her role in any materialistic way.

by Anonymous | reply 192 | July 15, 2021 4:26 PM |
R192, in terms of the Coronation, it is an perfumed substance used by the Archbishop of Canterbury to anoint the new monarch, the oil being made from a secret mixture of sesame and olive oil, containing ambergris, civet, orange flowers, roses, jasmine, cinnamon, musk.
This part of the coronation ceremony is hidden from view, and involves the oil being dispensed from an ampulla from the reign of Charles II (since most of the English royal regalia from before that was destroyed after the Civil War) into a 12 century spoon, and the used to anoint the hands, breast and head of the monarch.

He's sired attractive and healthy children and his marriage is free of drama. He does his duties with a studied seriousness that contrasts well with his wife's warmth. The Cambridges are exactly what the country needs and wants in future monarchs.

Hunny, when William becomes king there will hardly be much of the monarchy left. And honestly, both Wills and his father are somewhat relieved that Meghan and Harry are gone. Because if he were here he would not be controlled. He towed the line somewhat because of his grandmother, but his father and older brother don't command that level of respect from him. So protocol and tradition will gradually fall by the wayside.

by Anonymous | reply 241 | July 26, 2021 10:06 AM |
I agree, R241, but it didn't follow the long courtship pattern many of the Windsors follow.
Bea's first boyfriend really did her dirty, stringing her along for 10 years, then dumping her and quickly marrying someone else. Of course, Bea should have chucked him at the 5-year mark when she couldn't get a ring on her finger. Marriage is very important to women in that set: Aristocratic girls who don't find a suitable husband by the time they are 30 will generally settle for someone less suitable but still acceptable. See also: Princess Margaret, Kitty Spencer.
by Anonymous | reply 242 | July 26, 2021 12:59 PM |
Bea was right not to wait with Edo. The scaled-down ceremony was charming and appropriate and avoided the tricky issues of her parents' public participation and the Sussexes' attendance. She also just got under the wire in terms of having both grandparents at her wedding, as Philip's health began its final downward spiral not long after.
by Anonymous | reply 243 | July 26, 2021 1:09 PM |

I always love re-watching that “Elizabeth R” documentary, R260. Watching the Queen actively engage in opinionated conversation (and getting talked over!) is great. Plus the cute moments with her grandkids and the hilarious scene as she’s reviewing the itinerary for some day trip in a little town. “Oh…and another plaque :|”. Her deadpan humor is top notch.
I just wish they would release that 1969 “Royal Family” documentary. But apparently the whole family hates it and will never release it.
by Anonymous | reply 261 | July 27, 2021 3:11 AM |
Having seen it at the time, I don't think there's anything in the documentary itself for them to hate: the problem was that the whole idea behind it was to let the public see the Royals as human beings.
The unintended consequence was the kind of baying-hound behaviour that occurred in the press around Diana and the demise of Fergie, and more recently around Harry and Meghan. Before the doco, the Queen was very much seen as head of the Church of England, which was very much the church of most of Britain's citizens then, and because of that she and her family were accorded the kind of respect by the press that you might associate with the Pope. Once they invited TV in with the purpose of humanising them, they couldn't put the genie back in the bottle.
I think it was Philip's idea to do it, as part of his program of modernising The Firm, but it backfired.
by Anonymous | reply 262 | July 27, 2021 11:32 AM |
R262, I think you might be mixing up Royal Family (1969, which was met with shock and derision because the RF seemed so banal) with Elizabeth R, which focused more on The Queen and more on her official duties and receptions. The former unleashed the press, as it destroyed much of the mystique surrounding the monarchy.
By the time Elizabeth R came around the mystique was gone anyway, so people were much more positive about seeing, close up, the job the Queen does.

At 95, the Queen is just doing what she wants: She likes Fergie, Philip is dead, so she's having Fergie up to Balmoral. It's probably also a sop to the banished Andrew and his daughters. The world may not like the Yorks much, but the Queen clearly loves them and is willing to indulge them. They seem to do a good job of kissing up to the old lady.
Why she still indulges the nasty Sussexes is anyone's guess, as all they do is take swipes at her in the press.

Stans ^ obviously.
by Anonymous | reply 304 | August 9, 2021 3:30 PM |
R303, I’m definitely not a Markle stan, but there is a distinction between the aristocracy and the monarchy, and it’s exacerbated by the fact that the succession to the throne was settled on the Hanoverians, essentially overlooking the 50 preceding people in the line of succession.
To a British aristocracy which took pride in having English/Scottish lineage going back to at least 1066, the accession of a German-speaking family to the English throne was rather shocking (especially to the Jacobites) or an amusing convenience (to those who didn’t want a catholic accession)
The aristocracy derided them for surrendering much of their authority over domestic affairs to parliament (which in retrospect was one of the things which led to the survival of the monarchy), their poor English and terrible manners.

R305, surely the accession of George I over all other claimants was a sign of parliament taking control over the choice of monarch.
by Anonymous | reply 310 | August 9, 2021 4:55 PM |
R310, yes, the accession of George was exactly that (although parliament had already exerted that right by inviting William and Mary to take the throne). i don’t think that contradicts the point I am making that the aristocracy was split into 2 factions: one faction which viewed the event with horror because it ruptured the divinely ordained line of succession, and a second faction which regarded the accession of George I as a sad necessity to save the country from popery.
Both factions felt themselves to be more English than the Germanic family that now found itself at the pinnacle of the nobility, and both factions held the Hanoverians in some contempt for their different language, customs and manners. The aristocracy felt superior to the monarch due to their Englishness, and the monarch felt superior because he was the monarch! Both were aware that neither fully accepted the other as being superior.
Even nowadays, it is common for people to call the Royals German, even though their roots are firmly rooted in he UK for far longer than other immigrant families who are accepted without question as being British.

I'm starting to wonder whether there are more sinister details to the Andrew story. The obvious thing to do was to say at the outset, "Yes, I had sex with her. I'm not proud of it, but she was legally an adult and there was nothing in the situation that suggested to me she was unhappy to be with Jeffrey Epstein or to go with me. If she was I am extremely sorry to have participated, but I can sincerely say she gave me no clue she was not having a good time. I apologise for the embarrassment my actions have caused my daughters, Her Majesty and the rest of my family."
That would have ripped off the band-aid and left the press with nowhere to go after a day or two of "ooh! did you hear that?" headlines. He could have paid Ms R some reparation to keep her quiet, and even if it came out it wouldn't have mattered because he'd already confessed.
So I do wonder why none of his advisers suggested it. Maybe they did and he was just too arrogant to abase himself like that, or maybe there is more to the story and they thought saying nothing was safest.
by Anonymous | reply 322 | August 11, 2021 2:41 PM |

As a mother, wife, daughter of 90 year old parents who annoyingly seem like they will never die -- one less person to worry about in my life would not be a bad thing once I got over the initial grief. The Queen has had more than her share of worries and it only escalates with Harry and Andrew. I know this sounds hard-hearted, but a 90 year old deserves some peace and quiet, in my opinion.

The York girls are not pretty. They never were, and now that they are both pushing 40 and married mums, they just get plumper and plainer. They'll never be marketable commodities because of this lack of beauty and glamor. If Diana had looked like Camilla, would she have been a global phenomenon? Would Kate be as lauded as she is without the Barbie doll bod and hair? Even Meghan Markle has her share of beauty despite the awkward figure, and she's made the most of it.
The Yorks should give up the dream of being mini-Dianas and just enjoy their money and their marriages. They won't, though, because they got the famewhore gene from both sides.

by Anonymous | reply 339 | August 12, 2021 2:55 AM |
Exactly, R339. What I worry about is Fergie playing on the sympathies of her daughters to demand a share of their purse. The Queen will leave $$ to Andrew and to the daughters, because she is very fond of them. But she won't leave Fergie anything of value. So Fergie will have to depend on her daughters and she will grift off them with absolutely no remorse. I imagine she can be quite a vicious drunk when provoked. Now Andrew might toss a few crumbs at Fergie and he will definitely keep a roof over her head.

I never did R355. I have only anecdotal evidence, but it seems to me in most marriages, if the woman dies first the man is not far behind. He's lucky to manage for another year. But if a man pre deceases his wife, she will live happily ever after for a while. I mean with the old old ones, they might die within hours of one another but mostly they thrive after their husbands drop dead. Also figure that Elizabeth is no vegetable. She loves her life and get a lot of satisfaction from her work (as queen) and also from her horses. Her studs bring in tons of money and she really enjoys her personal life. I think at this point she looks back on a very eventful life with a high degree of satisfaction. Yes, she has had heartbreak and disappointment, but she is focused on the future, the whole soldier on thing. She looks happy because she is. No. Worries.

R359, I think Charles has a very narrow role when it comes to Andrew and Harry. So IMO it's the opposite. Charles has been running almost everything else with a large mostly competent staff. But when it comes to Andrew and Harry, he really has to make his case carefully because she will only let him go so far. And she has made it clear she still adores Harry. She loves him to bits. Probably even more than Andrew. Her disgust about his trafficking the underaged girls with Epstein has made her pull back from unqualified support. But support for her son nevertheless. Andrew has exhausted her patience.

British royal wedding tiaras. I love those fringes (Gabriella and Beatrice). I like the Festoon, Meander and Iveagh tiaras too. It wouldn't matter if Jesus Christ himself came to the party, Harry and Meghan would draw the headlines. And honestly, I don't blame the Obamas for not wanting to appear to take sides in a family feud. I will bet you Michelle and Oprah have had a discussion about the interview. Michelle and Barack really have affection for the Queen and they like the Cambridges, Harry and Michelle have always been close) but they aren't going to step into that shit.

It's funny, the british tabloids reported every day for over a week about the Sussexs and Obama's birthday. R390 - I fail to see how it's worked out well for Fergie.
She's tried every job imaginable and usually doesn't succeed. She's dependent and living in her ex-husband's home. She doesn't have a significant other. She borrows money from Epstein and her husband to pay her debts. She gets caught trying to elicit cash in exchange for access to her husband. She's not well liked in Britain. To me, she's wasted every opportunity simply by being herself: greedy, grasping and lacking in judgement. She seems to keep making the same mistakes and not learning from them. She's a major fuck up.
by Anonymous | reply 391 | August 19, 2021 2:52 PM |
Agree, but she does keep getting these jobs. Look. In my opinion she is all you say she is, but also desperate for attention and opportunities. She clings to her celebrity status because she is no longer married to the Royal Family. Right now she is giving Andrew advice about his troubles. Has always done. She may be a failure at every thing else but she does know how to play the media. And she is giving the rest of the family agita' because god only knows how she and Andrew are double -teaming the Queen. And Beatrice and Eugenie are a weakness she will exploit. The other thing to keep in mind is that Andrew and Fergie are very similar. And she knows his secrets and he knows hers. But since he is a Blood Prince, in the line of Succession, what she has on him is more important than what he knows about her. Her scandals don't matter much in the scheme of things. His do.

by Anonymous | reply 405 | August 22, 2021 1:58 AM |
It's not only that the Queen has a special affection for Andrew. My own mother had similar with my fuck up brother. For years she made excuses, turned a blind eye, or bailed him out. She'd get exasperated with us when we complained. But at a certain point, when my brother was in his late 40's, she was through. Late, I asked her why she "changed" and she said, "Look I know he has always been a problem. And I know I made excuses for him. But when you have a problem child, you put in the time. You are more watchful. It's exhausting. But you do it because you are hopeful they will eventually get it right, and mature. But now I have to accept that this person is almost 50 yrs' old, that this is who they are, and they will not change. So if it appears that I am backing away it is because I'm over it. I have no hope. I am resigned that he will not grow or change or straighten up. I may seem to be a fool, but I'm not."
I have a feeling the queen has gone though similar with Andrew. However, the second part of this is that this is the Royal Family. For hundreds of years they have had to put up with and cover up for their monsters. Queen Elizabeth knows that history. Andrew isn't the first spoiled incorrigible criminal in the family. There have been others over the centuries, and many of them much worse than him. But because this is the RF, it is a long established custom that he will be protected because he is a Blood Prince. Period.
It has nothing to do with her love or her closeness, it is about tradition and custom. He has a wall built around him. Just remember the Duke of Windsor. He literally betrayed his county during wartime. And would have done worse. And yet for decades his collaboration with the enemy was covered up. He was never exposed or prosecuted. Yes they punished him in personal ways, here and there, but nothing public. So don't think there's a protective shield out of love. It has more to do with "This is the way we handle things." and has been for hundreds of years. And aside from some horrible, unexpected tragedy, she isn't going to get too concerned about any bullshit crisis Andrew invents to grift her. She has no more fucks to give.

[QUOTE]Charles detests Andrew and has for years. DETESTS. Just give it time.
He does, it is well known. He is also very fond of Edward, which is why I expect that he will bestow the Dukedom of Edinburgh upon him very early on in his reign. What will be interesting to see is whether he does this as a life peerage or a hereditary one. A life peerage would honour Prince Phillip's wish, while at the same time not allowing a Royal Dukedom to "escape". After Edward's death it could then be bestowed upon one of his offspring, or on some other member of the family more closely within the line of succession. Life peerages offer all sorts of possibilities for maintaining the traditional ennoblement of royal sproglets without increasing the proliferation of titles.
by Anonymous | reply 409 | August 22, 2021 3:28 PM |
R409 - I don't think Anne likes Andrew very much either. I've seen videos of her smacking him when he was young as well as speaking harshly to him. I think he's tolerated by most of the family. Strangely, in another video, I've seen Andrew pout until Harry pecked him on the cheek. Family relationships are tricky.
by Anonymous | reply 410 | August 22, 2021 3:49 PM |
Has there ever been a life peerage in the royal family though? r409. I mean there are some with reasons, like Duke of Monmouth! Actually maybe they should have revived that one for Harry.
by Anonymous | reply 411 | August 22, 2021 3:50 PM |
It might be tricky granting the Duke of Edinburgh title on Edward. At this point they would have to make it inherited but could not give male preference since the Crown now goes to the first born, not the first son. So that dukedom would have to go to the daughter Louise as the creation would be in the present, regardless of the Letters Patent of the creation for Philip. I don’t know if the RF likes fiddling with tradition (though it happened over a hundred years ago with the Dukedom of Fife).
by Anonymous | reply 412 | August 22, 2021 4:01 PM |
R411, I’m not aware of any life peerages within the BRF in recent memory, but it would not be a difficult precedent to create. The Sovereign is the fount of honour, and can do more or less what they want in this arena (as long as they play nicey-nice with the government of the day and create political peerages when requested). Life peerages have existed in some form or other since at least the 14th century, so the precedent, if established, would have deep roots.
by Anonymous | reply 413 | August 22, 2021 4:04 PM |
R412, when Charles becomes king, the Edinburgh dukedom will merge with the Crown, so it will have to be recreated for Edward anyway. Edinburgh has only had five dukes, in three creations, so it’s not like there is a weight of tradition behind it specifically. Post Edward, I think an argument could be made to join it to the title of the Prince of Wales.
It will be interesting to see how it works out.
by Anonymous | reply 414 | August 22, 2021 4:10 PM |
r412, No,the order of succession to the throne was changed. Titles still go down the male line. Don't expect that to change any time soon. Aristocracy is expected to die a natural death this way without any tiresome political change.
by Anonymous | reply 415 | August 22, 2021 4:11 PM |
Charles has probably already negotiated this with his brother. He knows he needs the Wessexes now that Harry has permanently moved to California. If he wants to keep Edinburgh, he could upgrade Wessex to a dukedom. Edward will deserve a dukedom of some sort for his long service to the Crown.

No wonder Lady Kitty Spencer chose a 60 year old not only older, but SUBSTANTIALLY wealthier than dear old dad who dallied too many times. Denying Kitty the tiara and boycotting the wedding seems like Diana-level ghosting -- except it's his own daughter and he caused her mother, a fragile Victoria, much anguish with his many brazen, extracurriculars. Charles Spencer has always been a selfish, controlling dick, and he's done his best to make bank off of his sister's corpse over the years. He's also declared quite publically that Louis, his heir, will get almost all of the money so that the family estate will be properly looked after. Kitty decided to feather her own nest by marrying a rich old man who will take care of her the way Daddy never did, and now she's out of her father's control forever. Of course Charles is pissed, but good for Kitty.

by Anonymous | reply 423 | August 23, 2021 5:13 PM |
R422 That’s just the way that primogeniture (look it up) works - the title and bulk of the estate goes to the eldest son and heir. Any younger sons and any daughters get a nominal amount, if anything, and have to fend for themselves.
Which is why you’ll find aristocratic families like the Spencers reproducing so that they finally produce a boy after a series of girls - otherwise the bulk of the estate goes to some cousin.
by Anonymous | reply 424 | August 23, 2021 8:18 PM |
Your own definition of primogeniture, R424, incorrectly confuses the general term "primogeniture" with one expression of it. There is a large difference between absolute primogeniture (the oldest child) and male-preferred and/or agnatic primogeniture. The choice in this case of the eldest son (and future title holder) to be the primary heir was Charles Spencer's choice, not the rule of the land. And not all families do it this way, as with such parvenus as the family of the House of Windsor who moved to absolute primogeniture in 2015.
Of course strict male primogeniture has not existed in England since Stephen and Matilda fought it out. Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots, after all, were the first and second in the line when Elizabeth took the title. We do have Elizabeth II, as well.
By all means, look it up, R422.

I know what primogeniture is, R424. My point is that due to primogeniture, Kitty was left to make her fortune as best she could, and she did it in the time-honored tradition of marrying rich. That the groom's age and, potentially, religion did not appeal to Dear Papa shouldn't have mattered one whit to Kitty, as she was fucked over by a system that ensures the oldest boy gets everything and everybody else gets almost nothing.

Yup, the earlier generation of Spencer girls - Sarah, Jane and Diana benefitted from an inheritance from the Roche/Fermoy side of the family but the current Spencer generation is out of luck. Even the second son is going to have to scramble for funds.

Kitty's marrying so greatly will throw her sisters in the way of other rich men.

Charles, like his father, had 3 daughters and then the necessary son. Unlike his father, he then went on to have another son and two more daughters. With a family of 7 children, a man would have to be much wealthier than Charles Spencer to leave each child a large fortune.
At least the current Spencer girls got good educations at the University of Cape Town. Diana and her sisters were sent to mediocre boarding schools and packed off to London to find husbands in their late teens. Charles Spencer, OTOH, was sent to Eton and Oxford. It wasn't about brains, either: Diana may have been 'thick as a plank,' but Sarah Spencer had 7 O-levels and probably could have done very well at Oxford, too, especially if she'd first been at one of the top girls' schools, like Benenden or Wycombe Abbey.

Amelia Spencer got engaged in 2020. Interestingly, she said in an interview that her father had offered her Althorp for the wedding. Kitty may have rushed her own wedding so that she wasn't humiliated by having a younger sister get married first. It sounds prehistoric, but the upper classes still think that way. When Princess Eugenie married Brooksbank, I said to myself, "Bea will be engaged within the year"--and she was.
by Anonymous | reply 434 | August 24, 2021 12:27 PM |
Amelia didn't need to rush as her fiance is around her age. They just recently moved to Lobdon as part of the new S. African diaspora.

That just leaves Eliza "on the shelf," so to speak, as the other Spencer girls are still little girls. Again, I know I sound Victorian, but she is getting on up there to be a single upper-class British woman, They usually like to have the marriage and kids thing nailed down by 30.

One of the Spencer girls should have gone after Hugh Grosvenor, the fabulously rich Duke of Westminster. He's only 30, inheriting the title at an incredibly young age due to his father's early death (Sarah Spencer once dated George Grosvenor, and the break-up sent her into a wicked bout of anorexia.)
Louis Spencer is currently living in London playing at being an actor, but he'll be expected to find a suitable, moneyed girl soon enough and produce the next future Earl Spencer. His wedding will definitely be at Althorp.

Regarding the article above at R463, it will be interesting to see where the Cambridges end up living if they do, in fact, relocated to Windsor. I'm sure it won't be any old Frogmore Cottage!
I don't know what sort of accommodation is available at Windsor Castle, but I suppose they could end up living there in a grand apartment (if there is such a thing there). However, I would imagine they would like their own house. The Fort Belvedere mentioned in the article above is too grim to contemplate. I'm trying to think of what other grand houses are around there apart from Bagshot Park and Royal Lodge.
Rumour has it that the Sussexes originally were hoping to live at Windsor Castle (can you imagine??). Wouldn't it be delicious if the Cambridges did land there in the end.
by Anonymous | reply 464 | August 29, 2021 1:38 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 467 | August 29, 2021 3:56 PM |
I'd love to see Wills assert himself, but he really is close to Beatrice and Eugenie, and I doubt he'd do anything to cause injury to them. They already have enough burdens with Andrew & Fergie.
by Anonymous | reply 468 | August 29, 2021 4:07 PM |
Wills and Kate live at Kensington ight now. They have Anmer Hall which is on the Sandringham Estate. I think Charles is at Clarence House and has Highgrove. What's the utility of William giving up his housing when he is already pretty well situated. Why do that to his kids? Because you know the Queen is not going to be around much longer. She will be gone within the next 5 years. More likely two years. If it's about entertaining and matters of state or about consolidation, I say stay put. The only other place William would go is Clarence House or St. James once Charles is king. Now, all those ancients and freeloaders who live in "grace and favor" apartments or "cottages" are the ones to be booted out. I think Andrew will make his mother sign in blood to insure he keeps a roof over his head and stays put.
by Anonymous | reply 469 | August 29, 2021 4:16 PM |
^ Distance. Norfolk is far enough away you waste a fair amount of time getting there unless helicopter, and you know how that would play in the Mail.
Fort Belvedere might be easily available. It was leased to the Westons (the Irish-Canadian billionaires), last I read, and he died this past spring. She'll be well over 80. She wouldn't want or need to rattling around that place only from time to time. Their main homes are Toronto and Florida.
Agreed, though, Fort Belvedere isn't the cheeriest place from the outside. But, it's got a pool and it's quite private and wouldn't involve the hurt feelings and decade of revenge leaks flowing from booting Andrew. Plus, he's got a lease and a lease is a lease even if his mother is or isn't the font of law too.
Some photos of FB down the page at link... it's not as awful in colour. Louis will probably like the cannons and castellations.

I don't think Charles will ever leave Clarence House while he's living. It's much more comfortable than Buckingham Palace. A young Queen Elizabeth was talked into leaving comfortable CH, which Philip had just had renovated, due to pressure from the Grey Men, to move into huge, gloomy BP, but Charles will be nearly 80 by the time he's king, and nobody is going to tell him where to live.

Windsor isn't at all far away from London. It's right next door. It's not like the Cambridge kids are a 3 hour drive away. They can pop in to see Great Gran at Windsor Castle for lunch or a playdate any damn day. They do not need to move to Windsor solely to spend more time with her.
I think the story has legs simply because the kids are getting older/busier with school, friends, activities and Anmer Hall is a long commute at this stage. Also the parents Cambridge are getting busier with their jobs and the schlep back and forth to Norfolk is probably not all that appealing any more. Windsor makes sense because they can still have "the country life" but much closer to London. Also it gets them that much closer to Kate's family in Bucklebury, they can pop in to see that Granny a lot easier too.

The Cambridges live at Kensington Palace now. Their bolt hole, getaway is Anmer Hall. Windsor has no purpose for them. And The Queen and Charles approved Eugenie and he husband taking Frogmore Cottage When Harry proposed it as an option for them. So when Harry comes to town with his family they will stay at Frogmore as well. This story is just bullshit speculation designed to create even more drama surrounding Andrew. Frogmore House? Please. Charles isn't going to add another residence for the family. He wants the shrinkage to accelerate. William will be able to collect Clarence House in a few years and assume the rest of the benefits that come from being Prince of Wales/heir apparent.
Charles does not appear to have the health stores of his parents, but who can tell how long he'll live? Charles also is more likely to step down, provided he has held the crown long enough to seem less of a too-little-too-late replacement for Elizabeth the Seemingly Immortal.

Windsor is also a bit closer to Wales. Prior to COVID, the Cambridges did a few days worth of engagements in Wales. It was theorized at that time that they would step up the frequency of these visits in order to build up support for the pair in preparation for when William eventually becomes POW. The Welsh do not have the highest opinion of the royal family (but like the Cambridges enough if I remember their polling correctly). Having a home at Windsor makes this a bit easier, travel wise.
Actually, I wonder if they don't eventually intend to install them in Windsor Castle (at least, for weekends or summer, etc.) once granny croaks? Charles has Highgrove for the weekends, so he probably has no intention of staying in Windsor. That would only help to increase William's image as a future king and it would mean that Windsor would maintain a royal presence and not sit empty. Anyone from the UK who can speak to whether or not that is a feasible idea? Would the public balk at a POW ensconced at Windsor (as opposed to the monarch)?
by Anonymous | reply 499 | August 30, 2021 8:45 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 500 | August 30, 2021 8:53 PM |
R499, I doubt there would be any great fuss nowadays if William resided at Windsor instead of Charles. I’d be shocked if Charles gave Windsor up to him entirely though. The Monarch has lived there for 1000 years, and Windsor and Buckingham Palace play a big part in our national life. It just sounds right to hear that The Queen/King is addressing the nation from Windsor (as she did during covid) or That crowds have gathered in front of Buckingham Palace to cheer from the Mall as royal newlyweds appear on the balcony. It’s impossible go me to imagine the news saying that King Charles welcomed the US president to Highgrove on a state visit.
However, Charles is going to be an old king, and I’d be surprised if he is as active in his eighties as his mother has been. I wouldn’t be shocked if William and Kate have a home at Windsor too. One of the great advantages of Windsor for working royals is that it. Is pretty close to central London, but feels like the country homes they prefer. Crucially, it is also close to both motorway links throughout the country, and to Heathrow airport. William is likely to be doing a lot of travelling when his father is king, so living at Windsor rather than Norfolk would cut hours off of those journeys. And I suspect William wants to be a father like Michael Middleton rather than Charles, so he will want to be close to Eton too,
I suspect that Charles will take possession of Buckingham Palace and Windsor, as those locations are a big symbol of his legitimacy, which will be important as he tries to make Camilla Queen. In practice though, I’d bet that he will extend the public opening of Buckingham Palace for a longer period throughout the year, which will make him seem like a moderniser and give both he and William an excuse to spend more time at their more pleasant London homes.
Of course, a lot of what happens will depend on what party is in government. A Labour government would be fairly happy to announce that Buckingham Palace was now a museum (albeit used for specific royal events) and that the gardens were to become a park. A Conservative government would be more wary of such a change.

I think what may happen, and only if the Queen cooperates by dying in the next 2-3 years, is that Charles will reign for 10-15 years. I doubt he will even make it past 90. And William will be in his mid 50's and ready to take over with attractive grown children to capture our imagination as he and Harry did. But the idea of William residing at Clarence House when his father is King is gross. Anyone who has seen photos of the inside of Clarence House knows it is a shithole badly in need of upgrades, repairs and renovations. I don't think Katherine would want to set foot in Clarence House. Have no idea what St. James Palace looks like inside.
by Anonymous | reply 505 | August 31, 2021 2:31 PM |
My guess is they stay put at KP. It's the family home, the children are growing up there, it's massive, it's renovated for them, it's got a slightly better garden and slightly more quiet than Clarence House. I do buy the idea of bailing on Anmer for something in the country but closer to Windsor. There's no precedent or rules about who lives where. It's just Clarence House was often convenient in the moment. Easy switch when George VI died. Place for Charles when the QM died. I am sure I recall reading that Charles was moaning about Marlborough House having gone to the Commonwealth for offices, something like 'once you give it away you can't get it back.' He may want a slimmed down monarchy but if you get to stay it will be as regal as ever.
by Anonymous | reply 506 | August 31, 2021 2:43 PM |
Well, they have Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, Kensington Palace and St. James Palace all within walking distance of one another. I believe that once E2 is gone, Buckingham Palace will become a museum and part of it will be open to the public year round. The rest will be offices. It will cease to be a residence of the Monarch. They will use it for state occasions and dinners and special events. I don't think Charles will actually live there.
Now where Charles will live when in London, as King is another story. Is St. James suitable? He won't stay at Clarence House.
I agree with R506, William and Katherine have a 20 room renovated apartment, and will very likely stay there even if he becomes PoW.

I took the tour and have toured BP as well. Unlike BP, which are classic state rooms - big, grand and functional if not welcoming or comfortable, CH is Classic English country house style. by Anonymous | reply 512 | August 31, 2021 7:10 PM |
St. James' Palace has a number of apartments... probably a lot of Grace and Favour staff occupants. I think Princess Anne has an apartment there, but then you will read she has one at BP. I think E & S have an apartment at BP. There are state rooms at SJP which are often used for functions. Clarence House adjoins SJP. I would guess there's doors directly from one to the other. They certainly seem to share walls.

I think Clarence House only had a surface update when Charles took over. It’s still mostly in the Queen Mother’s style, as Charles couldn’t bear to change much of his granny’s home.

Just Google "inside Clarence House and you will see that R518 is correct. I almost had an asthma attack just looking at the pictures. No way would Katherine and Wills want it unless they insisted on massive upgrades.

Considering the millions that were spent on the KP reno, Wills and Kate need to stay where they are. Terrible optics if they take on Clarence House, which will require another expensive reno, unless they are willing to pay for it themselves.
by Anonymous | reply 521 | September 1, 2021 1:21 PM |
Yes, Kate and Wills need to tighten the belt, given that 10s of thousands of Afghanis resettling in the UK will need houses, money and schooling (English as a second language, etc). Many of the refugees will be illiterate and in need of life-long support. This is a huge expenditure for the British taxpayers and they don't need the added stress of paying for these two's home redo.

R525, Clarence House was built in the 1820s. It really isn’t that old compared to most other royal homes, or even most grand homes in that part of London.

Is it weird for William to live in the same place he grew up with his mom? I realize it's renoed, but I think it would be weird to live in your childhood home as a grown man with your own family.

Philip was mostly Danish and safely within a smattering of less desirable swarthy cousins as the houses went East, and Philip's wasn't a good acquisition, it was the best for Elizabeth's captured heart. He was too poor and, too swarthy. Though, back then it captured his gross manner, not his looks.

Elizabeth and Philip were third cousins via their common descent from Queen Victoria and separately they were second cousins once removed via their common descent from Christian IX of Denmark.
Victoria and Christian married off so many of their royal daughters to other European royal houses that she was known as the grandmother of Europe and he was called the father-in-law of Europe.

I'm just not that exercised about this bullshit. Am I missing some key element? Leaders have been selling favors forever and ever. Centuries ago, Charles forebears did the same. Kings dispense favor to those who "earn it." If we're going to get scandalized about some Royal doings, hanging out with a convicted pedophile who trafficked young girls and sleeping with underaged teenagers coerced into sex, trumps selling a knighthood any day. I said it a few posts ago: The Daily Mail is hyping this because the guy is Middle Eastern, and now all the other media has latched on to it as "undignified." Why would the police investigate? Did this Aide pocket some money without paying taxes? Get fucking real.

[quote]I do love Anne. I do. But God love her, she does look like Gary Oldman in Dracula.
I just watched a doco about her called Princess Anne at 70, in which she revealed she does her own hair. She was scathing of the relevant actress in The Crown who said it took three hours to get it like that: said it takes her 10 minutes. So there are some clues there.
What the doco did reveal, however, was that as we all thought she is the right person to succeed Her Maj. She's Colonel of the Royal Regiments (of which she is the longest surviving member) and even the senior officers couldn't speak too highly of her. I know they're likely to suck up in a doco, but everyone who talked about her said she did her homework fastidiously, didn't suffer fools, was fiendishly loyal and provided support - and where useful publicity - without having to be always the centre of attention herself. Excellent at talking to people at all levels and at negotiation in her Board roles. These are all things you couldn't imagine even a suck-up saying about Charles or Andrew.
Tim Laurence commented, sagely I think, that people always say how much like her father Anne is, but nobody remarks how much of her mother is in her, with the devotion to duty and the conscientiousness and never winging it. And of course the horses. Peter and Zara commented, among other things, that they love getting together with their cousins, though they didn't specify which they enjoyed the most. Poor Peter is the only non-Olympian in his immediate family, so you can't say they're not high achievers.
