Mayor Lori Lightfoot sparks outrage by claiming '99% of her critics are racist and sexist'

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has blasted her critics as sexist and racist - just six weeks after she sparked fury by refusing to be interviewed by white journalists.

Her comments came in an interview with WTTW, a local PBS station, when she was discussing the city's recent spike in violence as well as critiques of her approach to handling it.

Phil Ponce, of WTTW, said, ‘In recent months, there have been questions raised about your temperament and your reaction to criticism – a (Chicago) Tribune editorial used the term irascible – how much of this do you think might have to do with the fact that you’re a woman and specifically a black woman?’

In response, Lightfoot said, ‘99percent of it.’

Asked to elaborate, Lightfoot said, ‘Look at my predecessors. Did people say that Rich Daly held tea sessions with people that he didn’t disagree on? Ron Emmanuel was a polite guy who was a uniter? No. Woman and people of color are always held to a different standard. I understand that. I’ve known that my whole life.'

'And the Tribune or whoever could write what they want. What I’m doing is fighting for the residents of this city. I’m an advocate. I’m going to continue fighting. Obviously we need to be focused on uniting people as much as we can, but I was elected and ran on disrupting the status quo. And when you disrupt the status quo, you are gonna make people uncomfortable. You’re are gonna have people criticizing you.’

Ponce and Lightfoot referenced an op-ed by The Chicago Tribune’s editorial board titled, ‘Add to Chicago’s problems our defensive, irascible mayor.'

The article read, ‘What voters didn’t know is that they also were getting in Lori Lightfoot someone with a tendency toward the thin-skinned, the defensive, the short-tempered. And no, those aren’t personality quirks assigned to female leaders that would be treasured in a man. They are traits that interfere with advancing the goals of any politician, boss, CEO.’ RELATED ARTICLES

Lightfoot would have more wins on her policy agenda if she could better manage relationships. Instead, she battles with those from whom she needs support — from Chicago aldermen to state lawmakers to her own staff and even rank-and-file police officers, a constituency she desperately needs to help keep the city safe but for whom she offers little public support.’

Lightfoot noted that the editorial was published shortly after she faced backlash in May over her decision to grant one-on-one interviews to only 'black and brown' reporters to mark her two-year anniversary in the role.

Gregory Pratt, a Chicago Tribune reporter who is Latino, revealed he was among those who had been granted an interview but the newspaper decided to cancel it when Lightfoot refused to lift her ban on other reporters.

How do we suddenly have so many racist reporters in a woke town?? The last good mayor would have this argument settled over dinner and drinks.

Except that’s not true. Just last week it was a Black female colleague that got into it with her because they were sick of her shit. So there goes that “racist and sexist” excuse.

by Anonymousreply 3July 2, 2021 10:27 AM

She's got spunk.

I hate spunk.

by Anonymousreply 4July 2, 2021 10:34 AM

R3, an old friend of mine said she’s had enough and is leaving Chicago. She was born in the Bronx.

Lightfoot is absolutely insane.

by Anonymousreply 5July 2, 2021 10:35 AM

Fuck you R3 and R5. Chicago is anything but a shithole. And has Lightfoot been less than an effective mayor? 100 percent. Would I vote for her again? Probably not. Does this city have problems? Yes a city of 3 million people has problems. It’s also years of city politics and ways of doing things that she has been attempting to change. I am not her biggest fan and she will probably end up failing, but spend some time in the actual city and in ALL the actual neighborhoods before you make such général comments you backward hillbilly

by Anonymousreply 6July 2, 2021 10:46 AM

"I am not her biggest fan and she will probably end up failing, but spend some time in the actual city and in ALL the actual neighborhoods before you make such général comments you backward hillbilly"

How dare you call a New Yorker " hillbilly"!

It's even worse living there is you're black.

by Anonymousreply 8July 2, 2021 11:13 AM

She's nuts and an asshole. Chicago has had some real doozies serve as mayor.

by Anonymousreply 9July 2, 2021 11:43 AM

Lesbians don’t get to use the sexism excuse. That’s reserved for str8 ladies these days.

by Anonymousreply 10July 2, 2021 12:11 PM

Yes R9 as opposed to New York Guiliani De Blasio…need I go on?

by Anonymousreply 11July 2, 2021 3:56 PM

R6 is a native and is stuck. The ones who can’t get out always defend the place. Wait until you bring up the taxes, then they get really defensive.

by Anonymousreply 12July 2, 2021 4:09 PM

Hilarious R12. Sure whatever you need to tell yourself to justify your living in your 500 sqft apartment in whatever gay ghetto you decided you could hide out in while the rest of us have actual lives. Btw you forgot to bring up how dangerous it is to live her on top of the taxes. No ones stuck you infantile twat.

by Anonymousreply 13July 2, 2021 5:17 PM

Let’s be honest - Democrat mayors do not know how to run big cities effectively. They always turn into shitholes.

by Anonymousreply 14July 2, 2021 5:19 PM

More proof that putting minorities in positions of power changes nothing without accompanying structural changes.

by Anonymousreply 15July 2, 2021 5:24 PM

So, what you're saying, r15, is that the buck does not stop here where minority politicians are concerned. It's always someone else's fault.

by Anonymousreply 16July 2, 2021 5:26 PM

What’s the point if they are going to do the same horrible shit white people do?

by Anonymousreply 17July 2, 2021 5:28 PM

She's living proof that voter restriction laws are not necessarily a bad thing

by Anonymousreply 18July 2, 2021 5:28 PM

If Adams become the next mayor of NYC I wonder if he's going to engage in the same WACKO behavior.

by Anonymousreply 19July 2, 2021 5:31 PM

What does her husband Gordon have to say about it all?

by Anonymousreply 20July 2, 2021 6:21 PM

Is there ONE Democratic ran (Mayor, DA, police commissioner) major city that's not a crime infested shit hole?

by Anonymousreply 21July 2, 2021 6:22 PM

Yes. All of them. Crime is just a Republican buzzword for redistribution of wealth and property back to the people it was stolen from.

by Anonymousreply 22July 2, 2021 6:24 PM

Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Is that bitch gone yet???

by Anonymousreply 23July 2, 2021 6:27 PM

R22 so the sky high Black on Black homicide rate including innocent children means NÓTHING?

I thought Black Lives Mattered?

A 10 year old Black girl was killed in the cross fire and two other adults in my city last night

Crickets.....

by Anonymousreply 24July 2, 2021 6:27 PM

r21 Los Angeles, Houston, Austin, Philadelphia, San Jose, San Diego, Phoenix, Denver etc are fine and have Democrats as mayors.

Infact 17 of the top 20 most populated cities in the US are run by Democrats. Those run by Republicans are insignificant and useless cities -Fort Worth and Jacksonville.

by Anonymousreply 25July 2, 2021 6:38 PM

Los Angeles is an overpriced dump. The homeless problem has been getting worse and worse for decades.

by Anonymousreply 26July 2, 2021 6:40 PM

Actually 99% of her critics do so because she is the most incompetent mayor ever.

by Anonymousreply 27July 2, 2021 6:48 PM

I know everyone knows this and is pretending otherwise but what she means is that almost all of the criticism she receives has a racist or sexist component to it. Why this would even be up for debate is beyond me. Quelle surprise that it’s up for discussion on here 🙄

by Anonymousreply 28July 2, 2021 6:51 PM

She can’t do the job effectively. Saying that isn’t racist or sexist.

Being the mayor of a large, crime-ridden city is a terrible and difficult and thankless job. Frankly, I have no idea why anyone sane would want to do it. But she signed up for it and wanted it. If she’s not doing a good job, people have a right to criticize it.

She likes to come off as some tough guy, but she’s clearly not.

by Anonymousreply 29July 3, 2021 12:20 AM

Why are Chicago residents putting up with this incompetant.? The number one job of a mayor is public safety. Is there a single weekend that goes by where we don't see shooting after shooting after shooting?

And r25 is a total idiot if he is including Los Angeles and Philadelphia as models of "fine cities".

by Anonymousreply 30July 3, 2021 12:52 AM

by Anonymousreply 50July 5, 2021 2:17 PM

What’s all this taxes bullshit? I live in Chicago, the state of IL has a low income tax at 4.5% flat. They tried to charge it to a graduated income tax in 2020 but voters said, “he’ll no!” Chicago has taxes (shocker!), buts it’s a major city. Nothing new and nothing even that outrageous.

Chicago is like 4 cities. The wealthier north side where tourist go (including the Loop). Low crime, really no shootings, a completely safe big city reality. Then you have pockets of heavy crime in specific neighborhoods. The DL Republicans love to talk about that non-stop. Then the suburban parts of Chicago, and the affluent south and west sides with their own unique character.

Chicago is an amazing city. I stopped watching the local news and just enjoy my life in the city. There are a select neighborhoods I don’t visit but they aren’t near anything I want to see so it’s no issue for my safety. I wish those people could have such an easy going time in Chicago as well.

Every city has a neighborhood that people attempt to avoid or look down on. Chicago gets a bad rep because Obama is from here and any negative news about the city was used against him. Also, Chicago/Cook County is keeping IL blue while the rest of the Midwest gets stuck on stupid. It drives conservatives up the wall, but fuck them! We will enjoy our blue haven.

I’ve never had someone visit me in Chicago and leave with a lower impression of the city. It’s gorgeous, has so much going on, has an unbeatable lakefront, more park lands than many American cities, and it’s affordable.

Also, we actually invested in public transit and bikes before bike lanes were popular. As far as American cities go, Chicago is world class. We have issues with gun violence but that’s highlighting the culture issues in this country.

My city isn’t perfect and our mayor has problems, but we aren’t the hell hole some of you trolls make this city out to be.

by Anonymousreply 51July 5, 2021 2:54 PM

Spot on R51, spot on. Couldn't have said it better myself.

As if a mayor of any city has much control of their city in a country that gutted its social welfare system decades ago, particular with respect to mental health treatment and housing. Lightfoot seems like a piece of work but she cannot perform miracles. Other cities have been viewed as "successful" merely move their "problems" elsewhere. Problem is, this country's inequities are increasing exponentially so soon enough we will all be facing the same issues in our cities. But let's all bicker with each while the obscenely wealthy tax cheats customize their yachts and laugh at our ignorance.
