If you could be the lead from a "Women's picture", which would you choose?

For reference: "A woman's picture's involve moral dilemmas and conflicts associated with sexuality, home, and family, commonly set in a middle-class milieu and played out in stories of the fates of individuals."

Basically, a Soap Opera.

Could you do a version that people under 60 might know one of the actresses or films OP?

by Anonymousreply 1July 2, 2021 2:50 AM

R1 no I can't. "Women pictures" as a concept died a long time ago. After the 60s the themes that defined this genre became obsolete in the face of growing demands for grit and realism plus the women's liberation movement. Domestic themes (housekeeping, childbearing) were no longer profitable and the genre transformed into the "chick flick" genre of romance. If I were to update the poll it will be filled with Kate Hudson and Anne Hathway roles and no one wants to be any of those.

I'd be Carrie Scott from "All That Heaven Allows." Society may reject me but I'd end up getting plowed by Rock Hudson in front of a wild deer.

by Anonymousreply 3July 2, 2021 3:10 AM

Lora Meredith from "Imitation of Life".

I don't understand the question and I won't respond to it R2/OP.

by Anonymousreply 5July 2, 2021 3:44 AM

I don’t know any of these people.

by Anonymousreply 6July 2, 2021 3:45 AM

You should poll if we would rather be Beyoncé, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Paltrow, Streep, Kate Middleton, or Meghan Markle. That’s a more interesting conversation.

by Anonymousreply 7July 2, 2021 3:50 AM

Erica, because she got Michael Murphy, then Alan Bates--so different, but I think they're both cute.

by Anonymousreply 8July 2, 2021 3:54 AM

R1, you're just willfully ignorant.

by Anonymousreply 9July 2, 2021 5:10 AM

None of the above. I AM Blanche Dubois.

by Anonymousreply 10July 2, 2021 5:20 AM

I'm not a thousand years old R9.

by Anonymousreply 11July 2, 2021 5:31 AM

R11 I'm 23 years old.

by Anonymousreply 12July 2, 2021 5:35 AM

You're full of shit R12.

by Anonymousreply 13July 2, 2021 5:52 AM

R13 no I'm not. You don't have to be older to enjoy period pieces or classical movies.

by Anonymousreply 14July 2, 2021 5:59 AM

Nomi Malone from Showgirls. I learned to do whatever it takes to pursue my dreams and never be afraid to make a bold gesture.

by Anonymousreply 15July 2, 2021 6:02 AM

OOPS! I am stoned and I thought the question was, what did you LEARN from a lead in a woman's picture of your choice.

by Anonymousreply 16July 2, 2021 6:04 AM

I'm Mrs. Norman Main !

by Anonymousreply 17July 2, 2021 6:31 AM

R3 beat me to it.

by Anonymousreply 18July 2, 2021 6:39 AM

Definitely Julianne Moore in Far From Heaven, she got to fuck both those studly men.

by Anonymousreply 19July 2, 2021 6:44 AM

Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct. I'd be hot, rich, brilliant and men would do whatever I wanted with the flash of my cooter.

by Anonymousreply 20July 2, 2021 7:01 AM

R3: I was wondering why Jane Wyman's, "Carrie" wasn't included. R19: Julianne Moore's, "Cathy" did such a great job in, "Far From Heaven". I'd like to also mention, "Manuela", the Cecilia Roth character in Pedro Almodovar's, "All About My Mother". I know that Douglas Sirk is one of the directors he's influenced by,

Ooops! Wrong thread!

by Anonymousreply 23July 2, 2021 3:13 PM

If I have to choose, I pick Mildred because slapping Veda would bring me so much joy.

But generally I prefer to be a supporting character.

by Anonymousreply 24July 2, 2021 3:24 PM

Sally Field in Soapdish.

by Anonymousreply 25July 2, 2021 3:31 PM

Marylee Hadley in Written on the Wind!

R2 is right, although the genre also lives on in the smarmy Hallmark movies and the Lifetime "women in jeopardy" films.

by Anonymousreply 27July 2, 2021 3:38 PM

Most , if not all, of those women are unhappy and traumatized , so the answer is none.

by Anonymousreply 28July 2, 2021 3:43 PM

Nomi Malone from “Showgirls.” Shes my all time favorite movie character.

by Anonymousreply 29July 2, 2021 3:46 PM

I picked Scarlett, just because she has the most fun, and every setback is just an obstacle to overcome. Plus she looks fabulous (barely ages) and she's still rich at the end of the GWTW.

by Anonymousreply 31July 3, 2021 4:30 AM
