He's called Eduardo Leite. He's a member of neoliberal center-right party PSDB. He considers himself to be on the leftwing of the party. That said, he voted for Bolsonaro in 2018.

Brazilian politicians are a bunch of fugly men aged 55 or more with huge bellies. American politicians are usually more fit, though of similar age. That said, gay politicians have proved to skew younger and cuter, so in this sense Eduardo doesn't stand out. Below is a favorite of mine, Marcelo Calero.

He’s gay. He says so in an interview. He clarifies that he is a governor who happens to be gay, not a gay governor. He says he’s the same as Obama — a president who happens to be black, not a black president. He also says that he has nothing to hide, and is proud of his sexuality.
I wonder what made him decide to come out? There were rumors for a very long time. R28 is correct on filing a charge against another politician. Seems like he’s been out since January 2021.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 2, 2021 4:59 AM |
Continuation to R38… He posted a message on IG a few hours ago where he thanks people for their messages of support, and says love conquers hate.
There are some online Brazilian newspapers — prominent ones — that are dated a few months back that talk about his being gay, and he seems to be open. But he had an interview today where he openly talks about it. Perhaps it was the first time where he openly talks about it.
Good for him! Even better for the guys he’s slept with! Very hot!!!!

He is running as a presidential candidate for the Brazilian Social Democratic Party (PSDB) next year.
He recognizes that his opposition will want to publicise his private life so he is setting it out now 'as nothing to hide'.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 2, 2021 7:45 AM |
OP, where did you get that he voted for Bolsonaro? The way I piece things together they are very different politically in style and in content. I would think that Leite is solidly anchored on the center left, and extremely pragmatic. And obviously Bolsonaro is showing lots of homophobia, always has and still does, especially toward Leite. Leite also supports the effort to impeach Bolsonaro. Did he ever explain why he would vote for him in 2018, or if he had a change of heart at some point?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 2, 2021 11:41 AM |

R70, considering he has no effect on us and us on him, all we can have is an opinion.

by Anonymous | reply 71 | July 2, 2021 10:40 PM |
The Guardian has something out about Eduardo. It identifies him as a presidential hopeful (though he's very unlikely he's going to prevail in the PSDB primaries against the much more prominent governor for São Paulo). It also describes some of the debate on Brazilian social media about him, which is similar to the debate Datalounge has been having on Nassib.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | July 2, 2021 10:52 PM |
A lot of Brazilian gays such as myself voted for Bolsonaro in the last election. We knew how bad he was, but the alternative - the corrupt Workers Party that had stolen billions from the Brazilian people - was worse.
Bolsonaro is rabidly homophobic, but in a way that makes him an object of ridicule. Gay rights have only advanced in Brazil in spite of him. In 2019, the Brazilian Supreme Court ruled that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity is a CRIME akin to racism (which is also a crime). I don't imagine the US Supreme Court will be doing anything like that anytime soon.

Not true. I'm not sure what "tourist cities", but the more cosmopolitan places like Rio and São Paulo see plenty of antigay violence. It's the same as in the US, where homophobia takes place not only in places like Cleveland but also in NYC.

He's now saying that he regrets voting for Bolsonaro. Until 2020, he denied that was the case: he said Bolsonaro promoted divisions within Brazilian society but justified his vote saying it was necessary to keep the PT locked out of power. After he came out, however, his Bolsonaro support was heavily scrutinized and I guess the criticism struck a nerve.

Nude photos and a hot body will only get him even more votes. There's a famous lyric by Vinicius de Morais (who wrote "The Girl from Ipanema"):
[quote]may the ugly ones forgive me / But beauty is fundamental
Brazilians will always vote for a pretty face. Voting is mandatory and most Brazilian politicians are repulsive. Glamor is all a girl needs to get ahead.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | July 4, 2021 7:43 PM |
Another thing to consider - if you go it's not likely going to be much fun. Cities and states have been going into short-term lockdowns without warning.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | July 4, 2021 7:44 PM |
Plenty of ugly, fat people have been elected in Brazil. Hot people are the exception, not the rule. Contrast Brazil and the US. Except for Trump, all US presidents after Nixon have been fit and athletic, in fact a couple of them (namely, Obama and Clinton) were genuinely hot. Brazil has never had a hot president. And in this sense, Brazil is a more normal country than the US (just look at Boris Johnson, Angela Merkel, etc.). The focus on appearance in US politics is very sui generis.

by Anonymous | reply 104 | July 4, 2021 9:01 PM |
r104, you're not working with r73's explanation. He is not saying that they loved voting for Bolsonaro. But obviously there was a stronger urge to live with Bolsonaro - as a gay Brazilian, no less! - than living with the corrupt elite that was in place at time of the election. Now, I am not saying voting for Bolsonaro was a smart choice. I am actually puzzled in disbelief. But obviously there is something going on in Brazil that you don't understand and that you are not considering when you so easily dismiss the votes for Bolsonaro. So I'd rather withhold judgment than handing out a simple dismissal from a couple thousand mile afar.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | July 4, 2021 9:12 PM |
Bolsonaro was very clear in interviews that he would kill his son if he was gay.
A gay person voting for Bolsonaro is strong "Jews for Hitler" territory. A gay Brazilian voting for Bolsonaro really, truly hates themself.
Bolsonaro's selling point was he was one of the few politicians who wasn't corrupt. That turned out to be total horseshit.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | July 4, 2021 9:33 PM |
R105, it’s like when some gays voted for Trump with all sorts of bullshit excuses about why Trump was apparently better.
He showed his true colors.
Bolsonaro never hid who he was. Everyone knew he was a fascist. And now you have a country decimated. Really, they expected something better with Bolsonaro?
by Anonymous | reply 107 | July 4, 2021 9:38 PM |
The PT is the least corrupt of the major Brazilian parties, including the PSDB. There's data proving that. The chart below shows that fewer PT politicians have lost their mandates to corruption allegations than any right-wing parties. By way of illustration, I know, for example, of a case where a city's entire council body was arrested under corruption charges except the one PT councillor.
But the media make it look otherwise. Unfortunately the corporate media works as an arm of the business world, which has an interest in keeping pro-worker parties out of power. And, as r73's post shows, facts don't matter, only perceptions do, and the succeeded in producing a negative perception of the left to the middle classes.
By giving more prominence to investigations of PT figures than those of right-parties, and by collaborating with biased judges and prosecutors, the media managed to semear the left and cede power to Bolsonaro. The latter was an unintended consequence of its plans, but the media bears responsibility.
The conservative rage the media whipped for years wouldn't suddenly disappear after Dilma was impeached. It had to go somewhere, and the neoliberal technocrats of the PSDB were no longer appropriate vessels for the virulent feelings of Brazilian reactionaries.
It's kind of like how US media didn't like Trump, but definitely helped prepare the ground for his rise.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | July 4, 2021 9:38 PM |
