Is Cher A Good Singer?

She's capable, but is she good? Has she ever made anyone feel anything? Has anyone ever wanted to rewind an amazing note she het? Her speech impediment doesn't help.

by Anonymousreply 79July 2, 2021 7:33 PM

No. She stinks.

by Anonymousreply 1July 1, 2021 11:22 PM

Beautiful contralto voice, could enough for pop music.

by Anonymousreply 2July 1, 2021 11:23 PM

Yes, because she knows her vocal range and doesn’t push above it like most contralto pop singers. Adele and Miley, I’m looking at you.

by Anonymousreply 3July 1, 2021 11:26 PM

I don't think so. Her singing career started because she was in the right place at the right time, and she had the right look.

by Anonymousreply 4July 1, 2021 11:28 PM

This thread will rend in Datalounge in two.

by Anonymousreply 5July 1, 2021 11:28 PM

Vocal Type: Contralto

Vocal Range: 3 octaves 2 notes and a semitone. C#3- F6

Vocal Pluses: Solid contralto voice, even in the higher octaves, with a dark, smoky tone,a soulful colouring and a range that is brilliantly connected.

Cher has the vocal stamina to hold notes for extended periods of time, with or without the use of her a natural and easy vibrato. A vibrato that is predominately quick, but capable of being modified to make wider if desired.

Cher's belting technique is great, being well supported and mixed effectively. This makes it not only easier for her to reach higher fifth octave notes but it helps retain the fullness that is present in her lower range.

For someone widely known for her low voice, Cher's head voice is surprisingly robust, being bright and clear, with a weight to it.

Vocal Negatives: The heaviness of the voice makes it difficult to be flexible in its ornamentation melodies.

You forgot she bleats like a goat.

by Anonymousreply 7July 1, 2021 11:33 PM

She's no Jenny from the Block.

by Anonymousreply 8July 1, 2021 11:35 PM

Right voice at the right time.

by Anonymousreply 9July 1, 2021 11:35 PM

She has a great pop voice. Not a lot of range but she knows/knew how to use her voice to her best advantage and she is good at interpreting songs to fit her persona.

And, she's a far better singer than quite a few other famous female pop stars like Madonna, Janet, Britney, J.Lo, etc. who all had very minor if not actually weak singing voices.

by Anonymousreply 10July 1, 2021 11:40 PM

OP? Haven’t you ever heard Dark Lady?

by Anonymousreply 11July 1, 2021 11:44 PM

Goatlike voice similar to Stevie Nicks.

by Anonymousreply 12July 1, 2021 11:45 PM

I like her voice. Very distinctive and velvety

by Anonymousreply 13July 1, 2021 11:47 PM

She was awful on The Beat Goes On. She must've had a vocal coach after that song.

by Anonymousreply 14July 1, 2021 11:47 PM

She poor taste. Take her re-recording of "We All Sleep Alone" for example. She oversings terribly on the remake.

I think she’s a searing lead on Living in a House Divided.

She sounds like one of the talking fish from [italic]SpongeBob Squarepants[/italic]. Her vibrato sounds like a car that has trouble starting.

Cher has a very powerful and rich voice that many people do not like, simply because it is deep and lacking in agility. Also, her vibrato is very fast, as R6 has quoted, and that isn't always appealing.

She knows her voice extremely well, and always keeps her songs in the C4/C5 range in order to avoid overtaxing her vocal chords. Still, she can clearly belt higher (in the video below, she easily belts an F5 in Save Up All Your Tears, which she has done live a million times), and her head voice goes up to around B5 - everything above that is falsetto.

She is a good, consistent and very versatile singer who has done all the popular genres: rock (in which she excels), pop, dance, soul and even R&B (she proves to be quite good at it in her song Rain, Rain).

However, if you ask whether she is at the same level of vocal talent as the legendary divas, such as Whitney, Mariah, Taylor Dayne, Patti, Anastacia, Aretha, Mónica Naranjo et al... Well, no, she is not. However, she is not too far behind, and is a great diva in her own right... Not to mention, a survivor who is releasing new material when almost all the rest are nostalgia acts, that sing songs from 20 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 22July 2, 2021 12:23 AM

Those live vocals don't sound all that live to me. Does Cher lipsync like Celine, Mariah etc?

ABBA's songs date from more than 20 years ago...

by Anonymousreply 25July 2, 2021 12:25 AM

I'm not a big fan, but I'd say she legitimately is a good singer. I don't thing she has sung anything particularly good in the last 20 years -mostly overproduced and unnatural sounding. Her early work was much more suited to her voice. Go back to her Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves album to hear the real Cher.

by Anonymousreply 26July 2, 2021 12:27 AM

I love that long note she hits at the end of "Half Breed". It reminds me of Streisand really hitting that long note at the end of "The Main Event".

Actually, you should listen to that Not.Com.mercial album she put out in the late 90s / early 00s. Cher has been quoted as saying that she's not a fan of her own music.

by Anonymousreply 29July 2, 2021 12:29 AM

R24, Taylor Dayne has a spectacular voice. The fact that she hasn't had a stellar career as a pop singer doesn't mean that she isn't up there with the greatest. We're talking about vocal talent, not commercial success.

Also, R25, Cher has released her own versions of ABBA songs - she isn't re-hashing the hits from over 20 years ago, or falling flat on her face whenever she tries to release new material, because people only want to hear the old hits.

by Anonymousreply 30July 2, 2021 12:29 AM

Cher has an amazing contralto voice and she’s largely kept it intact due to great vocal technique.

by Anonymousreply 31July 2, 2021 12:31 AM

Or lipsycing.

by Anonymousreply 32July 2, 2021 12:32 AM

[Quote] Cher has released her own versions of ABBA songs - she isn't re-hashing the hits from over 20 years ago,

Give it up. Cher is trading on nostalgia and she has been since the "Believe" follow ups yielded diminishing returns.

by Anonymousreply 33July 2, 2021 12:33 AM

What's it all about Alfie is one of my favorite vocals. Love Cher.

by Anonymousreply 34July 2, 2021 12:39 AM

That's Miss Warwick's.

by Anonymousreply 35July 2, 2021 12:40 AM

Cher has said she doesn't like her own music. She sings it because it sells.

I think she has a very interesting voice. I like it better than a lot of bland pop singers' voices. It seems to be technically good, if usually pretty limited, but it's the quality of it that is notable.

But like Cher, I don't love Cher's songs. The ones I'm familiar with are all pretty generic and seem impersonal. And I think "I've Got You, Babe" is just embarrassing and I can't hear it without picturing Dorothy and Sophia in Cher and Sonny drag.

That said, I love her. She's winning the long game, remaining interesting and eccentric but not mentally deranged or grotesque, and she has a sense of humor and a lot of compassion.

by Anonymousreply 36July 2, 2021 12:46 AM

Sinve you're asking OP. ...NO...Horrible voice, bad singing, she's terrible. Tacky to the core. She's a whore ans she knows how the work the business, but her "music "is shit. Gay trailer park level of shit. She's ugly. She's dumb AF. Vulgar. I don't know how anyone can like that, her fans are uneducated, basic, lower class I guess. Or completely stupid middle aged yassss kweens. It's like madonna, or any pop act in fact. I was raised in a family where pop music was frowned upon. So I'll give you that. Sufjian Stevens is a musician. Rufus Wainwrightis a musician. I don't any any female pop performer who's worth wasting 5 minutes listening to. But to even ask is Cher is a good singer is insulting. OF COURSE NOT OP. see link below. These singers are good singers. Once, you've educated yourself OP, you will never go back to the shit that you're taking in your system right now. Happy journey OP. You're welcome

Alison Moyet was/ is a versatile contralto pop vocalist, IMO more agile and soulful quality than Cher. But her voice was less unique than Cher’s.

The only reason "Believe" got as much airplay as it did is because of Sonny Bono's death. Just a few years before that, she was doing this:

Her voice is nice and unique and can sometimes sound androgynous. I don't think she's a bad singer but mainly because she sings within her comfort zone. Pop music was never about being a powerhouse vocalist just being able to emotionally connect to your audience. I think Cher is adequate.

by Anonymousreply 52July 2, 2021 1:09 AM

At least Streisand didn't make Jason Gould go to the chop shop in order to be accepted.

by Anonymousreply 53July 2, 2021 1:09 AM

R7 that's what I have been thinking. Cher sounds like a goat! She and Shakira both sound like a goat.

by Anonymousreply 54July 2, 2021 1:09 AM

Cher sounds great. I have always enjoyed her. But surprisingly her voice sounds better the older she gets.

Not true of so many greats. Sinatra comes to mind.

by Anonymousreply 55July 2, 2021 1:09 AM

She's obviously not strong enough to live without plastic surgery.

by Anonymousreply 56July 2, 2021 1:10 AM

Is that a serious question OP? If so, God no!

by Anonymousreply 57July 2, 2021 1:11 AM

She embraced her masculinity in her hit single "Strong Enough". You can feel from her mannish voice she is just as strong as the rich man her mama wanted her to be. Pretty sure all the straight man will go because she told them that they "got to go". The gays, however, were attracted by her drag and disco vibe and declared her the queen of their tribe. And the gays will never leave her alone.

by Anonymousreply 58July 2, 2021 1:16 AM

She's always sounded to me as if she hadn't taken the chewing gum out of her mouth before belting.

by Anonymousreply 59July 2, 2021 1:21 AM

It was always Sonny who carried the vocals.

by Anonymousreply 60July 2, 2021 1:21 AM

Sonny never quite made it as a solo artist.

I love her, but she's been phoning it in since Believe. The concert tours that are just variations of the same show. The obligatory dance music CD's every few years with songs that are just variations of Believe. The karaoke like ABBA CD. She stopped reinventing herself and just stuck to dance queen.

She could have branched out and did that standards CD she always wanted to do. Did some more compelling film work (Directing? What happened to her directing a remake of The Enchanted Cottage?). Perhaps went back to the theater. Instead she just threw it all away to chase money.

by Anonymousreply 62July 2, 2021 1:31 AM

She does a good job staying in her LIMITED vocal range WHERE SHE BELONGS.

by Anonymousreply 63July 2, 2021 1:31 AM

Karen Carpenter sang a Burt Bacharach medley live while playing the drums at the one minute mark of the video I'm linking to. I do declare her the Queen of pop contraltos on this Friday evening.

Cher is her own species, man. She was born on a wagon of a traveling show under the starsign of "don't give a fuck." Cher and her contralto are equally unique and have stood the test of time.

Cher is comfortable in her chest voice, hence her vibrato, because her vibrato is when she's about to use her head voice (upper register) but just can't be bothered what for her starsign and all. She's a low ass alto and knows it. Sultry and powerful. She's lead a clean cut lifestyle for the most part and that's probably what's had her voice age well.

I dig Cher. She's harmed no one and lives a full life.
