One thing "The Handmaid's Tale" gets right is that when it comes to rape denial and blaming the victim women are the WORST.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 30, 2021 6:00 PM |
I used to like her but this is too much. It was one thing for Phylicia to act dumb about the situation and be protective of Cosby's legacy. But rooting for Cosby on Twitter after knowing what crimes he committed is stepping out of line. She really doesn't give a fuck about the women he violated. It's a shame because Claire Huxtable was viewed as a black feminist icon for decades.

It takes a LOT to cancel a black woman celebrity. I can only think of Whoopi (for the “rape-rape” comment) and Mo’Nique (for not shaving her legs).

R17: I was too young to watch the Cosby Show and know what the hell was going on, but as an adult now, the clips I've seen show it to be boring and, more often than not, her character was just a constant self-righteous bitch to her kids. I never understood why that show was popular or either of their characters for that matter.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 30, 2021 6:04 PM |
She was probably pushing to get "Cosby Show' residuals amped up again.

A lot of people have been looking back on the show as adults and thinking the same thing, r23. I remember being old enough by the time the show was into its third or fourth season that I could recognize Claire was truly awful to the point of being abusive to Vanessa.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 30, 2021 6:09 PM |
Quite frankly she always seemed more likely to know the truth then that numbskull brain dead real wife of his.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 30, 2021 6:10 PM |
I'm thinking that Cosby's real wife Camille better better any possibly boy-toy (or traces of him) out of their home pronto, since Cos is probably out today. Any indication there be a re-trial?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 30, 2021 6:13 PM |
better "get"
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 30, 2021 6:13 PM |
Rachel True mentioned on Alec Mapa's podcast that there was basically a line of women outside Bill Cosby's dressing room on "The Cosby Show." It's unsurprising that Rashad thinks he couldn't be an abuser. But rape is about power and plenty of people don't seem to truly understand that.

[quote] Claire was truly awful to the point of being abusive to Vanessa.
Cliff was also a harsh on Theo too. It does seem to scream colorism to me since Theo and Vanessa are the dark-skinned kids. Denise was a moron but got forgiven so many times and Sondra was stuck-up just like Claire but it was never an issue. Rudy was just a cute kid, so got a pass for being bratty. But Olivia was way more spoiled and indulged than Rudy ever was. A Different World was far less colorist and Whitley got called out a few times for being a stuck-up light-skinned girl.

Do black women get cancelled? I thought they were mostly exempt
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 30, 2021 6:18 PM |
That's because you're an idiot who thinks it's race-based, R44
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 30, 2021 6:19 PM |
Very true r43, in the early episodes Cliff was mean to Theo. That was based on the stand-up that Cosby had done in the 1970s where he had a lot of jokes about his son being a screw-up. As the show went on, Theo was turned into the golden boy overcoming difficulties and Vanessa became the family punching bag.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 30, 2021 6:21 PM |
She certainly has balls. She spoke the courage of her own convictions whether you agree with her or not. Takes balls in this day & age to do that.
I don't have to agree with what she said, but damn she is brave to do so on a public forum. Its pretty amazing to face cancel culture to say what you believe in when you know you will get slagged off, mightily.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 30, 2021 6:22 PM |
R16, no, they're not. There are more men than women defending him
by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 30, 2021 6:24 PM |
r49 - it's not balls - it's an overinflated ego, trying to save the role she was most known for instead of being the side-kick for a rapist.
Remember that Cosby also tried to ruin Lisa Bonet's career.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | June 30, 2021 6:25 PM |
R49, she's blocking replies so that she can't see the people criticizing her. That's cowardly, not brave
by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 30, 2021 6:25 PM |
Fresh Prince was a better portrayal of a new money black family, it aged better too and the social commentary is still sharp. The Cosby Show was a bit too wholesome and idealistic. It wasn't completely unrealistic because there are plenty of upper middle class black families like them in the Northeast.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | June 30, 2021 6:26 PM |
Some naive people on here who think she will be cancelled. She’s black… it’s not happening people
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 30, 2021 6:33 PM |
Theres an episode where Cliff and Claire are interrogating Vanessa's boyfriend Jeremy and Vanessa cried for him from upstairs because she is grounded. Claire storms upstairs and the inference is clearly that Vanessa is going to get a severe beat down.

People like Phylicia Rashad, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Morgan Freeman, Don Lemon, Vanessa Williams and Whoopi Goldberg are "pull yourself by your bootstraps" type of black folk. Very condescending. They don't like to hear about victims and think that everyone can save their type of luck and success. They turn their noses down on less fortunate black people and they rarely speak about racism in the industry. Phylicia chooses supporting Cosby over other women.

by Anonymous | reply 57 | June 30, 2021 6:37 PM |
I don't know what her previous stance has been on Cosby, but this tweet in isolation isn't horrible. The court was right to vacate his conviction because his 5th amendment rights were very clearly violated. He's lower than pond-scum, but that can't be an excuse to turn a blind eye to his constitutional rights being violated.

by Anonymous | reply 61 | June 30, 2021 6:39 PM |
You should read some of the reactions to this on Lipstick Alley. Since most of Cosby's victims were white women, the black women over on LSA don't seem to care.
That attitude is why black women will always be the lowest on life's totem pole.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | June 30, 2021 6:40 PM |
Vanessa and Theo didn’t get it rougher for being a little darker. Shit. They were both sneaks. Rudy got treated the best. For their mulatta daughters, they knew Denise was a dumb ass hippie so they just tried their best with her. They kissed Sondra’s ass a little being she’s the oldest.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | June 30, 2021 6:40 PM |

The trolls on LSA aren't black women any more than the trolls on here are gay men, r62. And what kind of irredeemable asshole says an entire demographic of people should be oppressed because of what some trolls said on a forum?
by Anonymous | reply 65 | June 30, 2021 6:42 PM |
Nah, the black women on LSA also continue to stan for Wacko Jacko because his victims were white. They don't give a fuck unless the victims look like them.
Again, lowest on the totem pole. And no one cares if that ever changes, lol.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | June 30, 2021 6:44 PM |
Having conflicting feelings is one thing, caring about her former colleague, yes.
Defending a rapist, no.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | June 30, 2021 6:45 PM |
I'm always sympathetic towards co-stars and former co-stars of people who are found guilty of crimes like this. Think 7th Heaven or Working Girl(in which Spacey made a brief appearance). It may be their only bona fide hit and they didn't do anything wrong. But as it turns out, with Rashad, she's probably just as bad.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | June 30, 2021 6:45 PM |
R64 I've noticed that but for most of his career on CNN, Don Lemon seemed more conservative. He was very dismissive of the Ferguson protests, had a rant about black people not keeping their neighborhoods clean and held up a sign that had the N word and asked if it offended people. Like Oprah, he seemed to be much more harsher on his black guests. When Trump got elected, CNN probably told him to become super liberal and anti-Trump for a paycheck bonus.

His conviction in this circumstance WAS a miscarriage of justice because his rights were violated. She's insensitive AF, but she's not wrong with this tweet.
Hopefully, another accuser's case is still within the statute of limitations and he can be rightfully convicted and rot in prison where he belongs.

Now that I think of it. Both The Cosby Show and 7th Heaven are similar. Both the actors that played the dads were rapists in real life despite their roles being warm father figures. Both shows had stuck-up judgmental mothers who hated their daughters especially the older ones. Both shows had a dumb older son who always was always fighting with the dad. The older daughters were dumb, stuck-up and couldn't keep a man and slut-shamed by the mom. The middle daughters were total airheads and also slut-shamed by the mom. The youngest daughters were spoiled brats who got away with everything. They added a bunch of characters to move into the house once the kids got too old. The only difference is The Cosby Show ended when it should have. 7th Heaven ran wayyy too long.

EVERYTHING in America is about race. Those white wimmenz knew that if they accused a black man of rape they would be believed plus win a financial settlement. They just recruited a few dumb sistas to throw some dumb folks off their game. If Bill was white, they knew they wouldn’t stand a chance going up against him. It was about money from jump street.

I’m the first the call out BM and their violence but I will never believe white women ever. Fuck them!
And where is the evidence?
Fonts love to talk about criminal justice system yet when we mention facts and ask for evidence against a system that targets black men then suddenly we are the problem!
Hope your son is never accused of rape and is forced into a plea deal!
Let me guess you also think MJ is a pedophile too?
I hear Oprah is hiring these days…..

by Anonymous | reply 82 | June 30, 2021 6:56 PM |
r80 I believe that. I'm not saying ALL white women are lying on black men but by default I will treat their allegations as suspect. Their privilege and accusations have literally cause cities to be burned to the ground, lives lost and innocent black men to be lynched. The hybrid of these women can be seen in the KARENS of today's society. Same thing happened when that white bitch accused Kobe of raping her then she quietly shut up when she got what she really wanted, the money.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | June 30, 2021 6:58 PM |
I’m extremely saddened by today’s events. He should have did more time for what he did.. And Phylicia saying what she said was absolutely uncalled for.
Yet and still it still doesn’t negate the harsh criticisms and down right racial hate that’s being displayed here on this thread.
It doesn’t.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court let him go because they ruled he didn't get a fair trial because the prosecutors went back on a previous promise.. I think he's loathsome and I wish he could rot in jail, but prosecutorial misconduct is real and needs to be stopped.

In a sworn deposition, Cosby answered questions from Constand’s attorney, Dolores Troiani.
“When you got the Quaaludes, was it in your mind that you were going to use these Quaaludes for young women that you wanted to have sex with?” Troiani asked.
“Yes,” Cosby replied.

R134, he was released on a technicality. Bill Cosby isn't launching a comeback, get real.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | June 30, 2021 10:52 PM |
I think what she supports is the notion that Black men are treated unfairly in the legal system. It’s the same type of mentality that celebrated when OJ got off - they didn’t care if he was actually guilty or not, it was about some type of vindication for Black men. And I get the sentiment, and maybe he was technically treated unfairly by the justice system (hence today’s announcement), but he admitted to committing some very dark crimes. At the very least, Rashad should choose her words better. If anyone failed anyone in this mess, it was the justice system failing the victims by not properly prosecuting the case in the first place.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | June 30, 2021 11:14 PM |

They turn their noses down on less fortunate black people and they rarely speak about racism in the industry. Phylicia chooses supporting Cosby over other women.
I can't stand most of the people in that group. Morgran Freeman never got cancelled for the scandal of him fucking his step-granddaughter. Denzel is rumored to be a serial cheater which goes against his image of faithful Christian husband. Vanessa Williams managed to reel back from the Miss American scandal

Vanessa seems like a nice person but she is the type who gets offended whenever interviewers mention her light skin privilege and how she greatly benefited from colorism. I don't get why she denies it because she must look in the mirror and see she doesn't look like most black girls and that gave her an edge in a colorstruck entertainment industry.

[quote] Now that I think of it.
I hated both shows. But, Stephen Collins came off as more low key in the media during the years he was working which was the opposite of Cosby who always finding something to bitch about and then act holier than thou.

Worrying about the 54% of white voters who voted to re-elect Trump is probably a better use of your time. Being that if actually impacts your life. It most likely certainly if of greater concern to black people than Cosby.
I'm curious if you wonder how the white community will react every time a white celeb makes national news. Every negative (and even sometimes positive) story about a black celeb is used to make some type of judgement (usually negative) about the larger black community.
[quote] She's worried about something, hence the backstroke at [R125].
Voicing her support for women is not really a "backstroke." She can support women coming forward and also disagree with the Cosby prosecution. You hope that she's struggling at 73 and worried about her next job. However, she doesn't ever have to work again, she's worked consistently for the last 40 yrs and she most likely is not worried.

Joseph C. Phillips made similar comments about there being various young women hanging around Cosby and that it was an open secret that Cosby cheated on his wife. I also recall some story where a former NBC employee came forward and said he was tasked with paying hush money to Cosby's mistresses. One of the women he mentioned being paid off was Shawn Upshaw who is the mother of Autumn Jackson who went to prison for extorting Cosby.

Generally speaking, people tend to support their friends and loved ones, even when they are accused of terrible things. Most people don't believe that their close friends and loved ones are capable of committing terrible crimes. That's a pretty normal pretty standard human reaction. Why do people act like their shocked about it. Twitter mobs are not going to change that. Demonizing Rashad is not going to change that, nor is it going to change the outcome of this case.

R140, with OJ there were several instances of cops being racist and perhaps even violating his rights, like when they climbed the fence to get onto his property for no reason, plus some sketchy evidence collection. The prosecution came in with a weak presentation because they were convinced that convicting a black man would be easy, like it always was. People weren't glad OJ got away with it because he was black, but because his case at the time was uniquely positioned to show the bias in the justice system against blacks and poor people. The general feeling was that the cops and the prosecution didn't deserve a conviction because they didn't follow the rules or put in the work.
It's been decades so now it's all been reduced down to "blacks wanted him free because he's black" but that's reductionist and not accurate.
Cosby wasn't a victim of the system, he was protected by the system, including with that 2005 agreement with the DA that has now allowed him to go free again. Very different situation.

It’s even worse because Bill Cosby has the f--kin’ smuggest old Black man public persona that I hate," Buress said during his joke at the time, according to Business Insider.
"He gets on TV, ‘Pull your pants up Black people, I was on TV in the ‘80s! I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom!’ Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby, so turn the crazy down a couple notches. ’I don't curse on stage!' "Research showed, according to TV One, that 81% of black Americans are likely to watch, with 86% indicating that recent events didn't negatively affect their decision."
So, yeah, they obviously don't care.
And since you're obviously comfortable cherry picking quotes from famous black people, listen to what Damon Wayans said:
"I don’t believe he was raping," Wayans told the radio hosts, Angela Yee, DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God. "Bye, b------. And they’re like, oh, really? Rape,” Wayans said. "Some of them, it’s un-rape-able. I look at them, (I think) no, you don’t want that. Get outta here, get up and get outta here."

You can't really compare Cosby and Collins. Yes, Collins was the star of a popular TV show, but Cosby was iconic for decades. Before the news blew up, most Americans knew the name Bill Cosby, even if they weren't fan (I'm too young for the Cosby show). How many people knew the name Stephen Collins?

I really doubt Stephen's fuckability had to do with 7th Heaven being on two streaming services. It's an Evangelical Christian show with a lily-white cast, so conservatives love it and they are a big audience. The Cosby Show a standard 80s family sitcom.
Malcolm Jamal Warner was hot in later seasons, so that made up for Bill's lack of sex appeal.

R31, I always thought that Vanessa must have been an unintended pregnancy because Clair was much harsher on her than the other kids, even calling her a "wench" at one point, which ever so amused me.
Shared a cab with Phylicia years ago when she was fresh off her Tony win, and she was actually quite lovely -- chatty, interested, warm, and with none of the "Grand Lady of Theatah" mannerisms DL sometimes roasts her for. The public Cosby support is incredibly ballsy given the times we are living in, though I don't agree with it.

R244, and yet, Cosby's own testimony contradicts what you say. He quite clearly admits to using qualudes to get women to have sex with him. As long as they did not cry or scream the next morning, he considered that retroactive consent.
He also considered the incapacity to move that you have on qualudes to be consent.
He said this clearly in his deposition.

Bill Cosby was the type of Black man that Toni Morrison and Alice Walker wrote about in their books. The predatory abuser who took advantage of the patriarchy and misogyny in the Black community. Phylicia is the enabler because she is beneficiary of Cosby and wants to protect his reputation in order to protect hers. She is selfish.

I feel as though, these women have been treated in an infantile manner. They wanted certain things, and when they didn't get them they were pissed. This is a popular opinion by many people.

R249, Rashad is still a working actress with two recent Emmy nominations. The Cosby support could definitely fuck things up for her; even if she doesn't need the money, most actors want to keep working and be widely liked. R253 Those same stories can be translated to white families as well. Just look at the way eleanor roosevelt grew up, with abusive uncles and abused her as well.
This isn't a black thing, this is a man thing. Men have always been abusive assholes, not all but historically some patriarchs abuse their roles in the family. Race doesn't even matter in this situation, because those stories exist in every ethnic group. That's definitely not unique to black men.

The Constitution is not a "technicality."
Bill Cosby was promised immunity for making a statement under oath (rather than exercising his 5th amendment rights). That is an injustice to use the statements, whether it's Bill Cosby or someone else.
What I don't understand is how he is now considered 100% free. The appeals court could have allowed the prosecutor to recharge & retry him *without* using his self-incriminating statements. I.e., the prosecutor can still have its witnesses (Constand, etc.) testify about what happened to them. Still submit exhibits, expert witnesses, etc.

by Anonymous | reply 291 | July 2, 2021 9:21 AM |
As we keep trying to explain to you, and which I suspect you are pretending not to understand, no one is saying the Fifth Amendment is a technicality.
What they are saying is that the court heard prior to prosecution that there had been a verbal-only agreement, but that the DA had said he reserved the right to revisit the case at a later date and potentially bring charges. This is in the AP article linked earlier in the thread, so don't ask me for a link, just go find it yourself.
The court said that the agreement was essentially non-binding and that the new DA could revisit the case just as the former DA said he reserved the right to do. The prosecution proceeded.
Later, the PA Supreme Court disagreed and said the agreement WAS binding. THAT is the technicality. Not the Fifth Amendment.

The years-long coddling of Cosby by the press and law enforcement before his conviction, and now his conviction being overturned and being released from prison -- none of this has to do with his race, despite what the racists here are saying.
It 100% has to do with his wealth and celebrity.
In other words, this has nothing to do with race and everything to do with CLASS.
Which is why our right wing trolls are beating the dead horse of race right now. That's what they want you to believe, that Cosby got off because he's black. It's their usual divide-and-conquer tactics -- get the gays on DL to hate "the blacks" because Cosby, all to distract us from the real war, which is class war.

Knew it. They told her to what she could for damage control so they don't have to fire her.

I’m upset he’s been released and he’s a monster, but I wish people would stop saying it was a technicality that got him released. It wasn’t.

Seriously, ENOUGH. Leave the woman alone. Apart from a tweet in support of a friend and former colleague who probably gave her a semblance at stardom, she hasn't done anything to warrant being cancelled by the feminists. She also apologized twice in that her tweet was taken to mean that she didn't support rape victims.
Sometimes, when it's someone you have been working with for over a decade, it can be difficult to imagine them a certain other way. The actress playing Rudy and Vanessa also supported Cosby because they knew a different man. There are also some who claim that it was a conspiracy against him; that he was targeted... etc. Leave Mrs Rashad alone and worry about other more important things.

Nice try, R320. So she was being 'supportive' of rape victims when she said earlier, "Forget these women. What you're seeing is the destruction of a legacy."?

Mrs DEAN Rashād!!

That was before she married Ahmad Rashad, R324.

Then what was it r319?
Most lawyers seem to agree that the prosecutors ignored a previous agreement.

R320, if you want to be “left alone”, you don’t make public statements glorifying a rapist. If you do that, you have to deal with the criticism.
R326, read the dissent in the opinion vacating Cosby’s sentence. There is very good reason to believe that there was no prior agreement.

Yes and that’s no “technicality.”
You have a constitutional right not to be forced to say anything that might incriminate yourself in a criminal proceeding. The DA thought it would be tough to get a conviction against Cosby, but as the burden of proof would be lower in a civil case, he thought the civil case was the best way to hold Cosby accountable. So he agreed that he would not press criminal charges.
As a result, Cosby could be freely deposed in the civil suit and compelled to testify. He was, and he said incriminating things.
Then the DA’s office decided to bring criminal charges against Cosby, and used his statements in the civil trial against him.
Now put your feelings about scumbag Cosby aside for a second. Is that some shit or what? It’s no technicality like chain of custody or something — that directly subverts core protections of people in a free society.

Ummmm....R328, that is what is meant by a technicality. He was not released because exculpatory evidence was found. No doubt about Cosby's guilt was raised.
He was released because the rules of legal proceedings were not followed. The right to not self-incriminate is important and good. But that does not mean its application cannot be a technicality. It is.

^^^He is legally innocent. But not actually innocent.
by Anonymous | reply 330 | July 6, 2021 12:24 AM |
^^no he’s not. “Not guilty beyond a reasonable doubt” is way different than “innocent.”
by Anonymous | reply 331 | July 6, 2021 12:26 AM |
If there were legal misdeeds that meant that Cosby's conviction had to be voided, why did it take three years for his lawyers to figure it out?

Don’t um me - violating someone’s constitutional rights is not a “technicality.” It is one of the gravest injustices that can be perpetrated against an American.
[quote]He was released because the rules of legal proceedings were not followed.
Again, no. This was not a violation of criminal procedure rules. It was a violation of the constitution.

Who takes an old law clerk named "Bootsy Gumdrop" seriously? I think that your points are correct R334, but Cosby opened himself for his sealed testimony from the civil suit being opened when he shot off his big mouth about his other accusers and his relationship with Constant. It was a sketchy decision, but it was the PRESS that accessed and publicized his admissions from the 2005 civil deposition. That testimony was no longer sealed by law after 2 years. Why a criminal court judge allowed it to be admitted is most likely your point. A Bootsy Gumdrop is hard to pay mind to. Cosby had legal recourse -so why DID it take so long to overturn his conviction if the court was in violation of criminal procedure rules?

Every firm has a Bootsy Gumdrop, who thinks that making sweeping emotional arguments makes them look better than simply citing the law.
Alright, Bootsy! It is a lot more fun to cite the constitution than the laws that apply the constitution. So work yourself up into a lather and enjoy it!

Every firm has an r335 - r337, who cites a radio station as her “briefs.”
That dumb old constitution! It’s so laden with emotion.
Wouldn’t it be fun to twilight zone r335 into a situation in which she were subjected to an involuntary commitment proceeding, but not afforded any due process rights, so away she goes because some conflicted judge says so? You know, like happens in Russia, a country without that silly, emotion-kaden constitutional protection?
Or maybe r335 - r337 should be brought up on criminal charges and then requires to testify in her only trial, because nothing is sillier or more emotional than the constitution.
All of these protections just being “technicalities,” of course.
Every firm has a r335 - r337, who see these things as “technicalities” — and as a result date rapists like Cosby walk free.

Meow Bootsy. What an old fruity bat you must be. You sound like the banned poster known as miss warwicke. Only ancient white fags feminize other gay men when they feel threatened. Sorry to upset your fine legal equilibrium. Or is it librium R338?
You know about scat than the law. That's for sure, queer cat. Now SHOO!

Booty Gumdrop is the SCAT queen! That poster fools no one. He posts all those EST scenarios about shit on the guestroom walls. What kind of sick minds old men have on this site. Today he's a lawyer? No sale.
