The Board of Elections fucked up their initial ranked choice voting tabulation yesterday by adding in 135,000 test ballots into the machine. In the initial rank, Kathryn Garcia leapfrogged over Maya Wiley into second place, coming within just two points of defeating Eric Adams before absentee ballots are factored in. If the new tabulations show a similar result today, then Adams may not be our new mayor after all (hallejuah!). Fingers crossed.
Fine article selection, OP. The end game is all right there in your link image: Mayor Eric Adams standing victoriously with a smile.

Everything points to an Adams victory. The racists will have a hard time with this. So will the NY Times. But Adams is actually the right person at the right time. Still, Garcia would probably have been a reasonably good mayor. But imagine what would have happened to the city if Wiley had won. Or worse, Yang.

There were supposed to be 125,000 absentee ballots, according to the Board of Elections. Something like 4000 may still be outstanding, but there are still unaccounted for ballots. Where are there? I'm not voting for the fascist cop. I don't believe his election victory is legitimate. The Board of Elections fucked this up so much that the other candidates should have taken this to court. I don't care that they want to promote "unity" or whatever bullshit to "heal" the city. They should have made a legal challenge.
There are still several thousand outstanding absentee and provisional ballots left to count. What if the final count is in recount territory? Is Garcia just going to let it slide or is she going to look even more fucking clownish in unsuspending her campaign and throwing the whole city into even more chaos to push for victory? Both her and Wiley should have waited until the vote was totally certified and every vote was counted before conceding the race. The fact that they didn't, when there was still a chance of a recount changing the final result, is pure bullshit and calls into question Adams' legitimacy to govern.
Squeaking it out with 1% in a ranked choice election with low turnout is not a mandate. He will try to govern with one if he wins the general election, but no one should respect it.

Interesting that this article has just come out. Perhaps people realize how unpopular Adams really is and that he's not a shoo in to becoming our next mayor.
Most important thing to note:
[Quote] Half a dozen independent candidates have already secured spots for the general election — and the fate of one potentially important ballot line, from the Working Families Party, is not yet clear.
[Quote] Ravi Mangla, a WFP spokesperson, told THE CITY Thursdays that “no decision has been made” about who will appear on its line in November.
[Quote] The party’s state officers “will be making a decision on the WFP ballot line for the mayoral race in the coming weeks,” he added.
And the best part is it won't be Maya Wiley:
[Quote] The WFP endorsed Maya Wiley in the mayoral race, but she has no plans to run on that line, her campaign told THE CITY Thursday. She would not accept the ballot line if offered it, said her spokesperson, Eric Koch.

"Perhaps people realize how unpopular Adams really is and that he's not a shoo in to becoming our next mayor."
R78, Adams just won the primary race over several other good candidates -- to say that he is unpopular is a little like Trump saying Biden is unpopular. Just because your favored candidate didn't win doesn't mean that the winner didn't deserve it, didn't get the most votes, or in some other way cheated.
Please stop your incessant whining about Adams and move on. And yes, he is a shoo-on for mayor. He will probably get more 70 percent of the vote, if not more.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | July 9, 2021 2:47 PM |
[quote] Eric Adams is pulling a reverse Bloomberg. He's a Republican but no R is getting elected Mayor in NYC after the Orange Afterbirth, so he's running in the Democratic primary. If he gets the nomination, I expect one or even more of the defeated candidates to run in November on different ballot lines. Remember, the November election is still First Past the Post, and you can run on multiple ballot lines due to electoral fusion. The Democratic primary is not the end of this. It's only the beginning.
That's me in a previous thread. More evidence this morning that supports this statement. And my prediction about this is the only beginning is also correct as per R78.
R80: He's the favorite, but it won't be 70%. There's more to come out about this GOP freak.

This race is near recount territory, before the final, certified results. For the life of me, I still don't understand why Garcia and Wiley conceded before the possibility of a manual recount was closed off to them. There's going to be a recount in a city council race where Adams racked up a large margin. What if the percentage shrinks enough to where his race can be recounted? Why close off the possibility and concede before every vote was counted? So fucking stupid on behalf of Garcia and Wiley.

Adams won primary with about one percent or bit less of total votes according to local NYC news media. He carried every borough on democrat side except Manhattan. That being said already opinion, editorial and others are saying too much shouldn't be read into these primary results, and that NYC overall still remains largely divided in many ways.
Blacks, Latino/Hispanics and women are happy because they see primary wins as justice on many fronts from BLM to fact city government will now reflect "inclusion" and "equality". Fair enough I suppose....
While Adams and rest will have golden opportunities starting in 2022, there are also many major hurdles city will be facing not just out of the box, but going forward as next four years roll out.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | July 14, 2021 3:44 PM |

Eric Adams is all but de facto next mayor of NYC. He was in Washington, D.C. this week meeting with Biden and other top democrats about the crime issue.
While there is always a chance, odds of Curtis Sliwa winning in November are about same as souls in Hell getting ice water.
Any other republican with decent political or other background *might* have a chance, but just as with past few mayoral races GOP couldn't find a single sane, rational and decent candidate to run.
Only saving grace some are perhaps hoping for is that the next four years under Adams go so badly that people are fed up and vote him out of office. Sound familiar? But don't think Eric Adams is going to play David Dinkins to whoever GOP could possibly find in 2026. Adams may lose reelection, but it won't be to a republican IMHO.

R93 He's saying this because Sliwa has three other conservatives dragging his numbers down in the general election, based on The City article at R78. His only real challenger is from the left, Cathy Rojas, who is running on the Socialist party line. People may think she has no chance, but if AOC decides to lean in for her, since she hates Adams, Rojas could win a plurality since it's not ranked choice or a runoff election. The person with the most votes wins in the fall, even if it's only 20%. It's possible the more left leaning anyone but Adams vote coalesces behind her and the "tough on crime" vote splits. It happened in Seattle with Kshama Sawant. It can absolutely happen here. That's why Adams is softening his "tough on crime" rhetoric. He can't afford to alienate progressives if he expects them not to flip, which I will, regardless of whatever pandering he does in the lead up to the election.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | July 14, 2021 11:53 PM |
Oh and the Working Families Party is not going to be able to play spoiler in the fall since they won't be on the ballot. It's Rojas or bust for the left.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | July 14, 2021 11:56 PM |
Adams is going to have problems regardless. Next city council will be largely minority, mostly women, and with a fuck ton of progressive, liberal, socialist democrats all eager to make their mark before up for reelection. Due to redistricting happening based on 2020 census results city council members will be up for reelection in two years this time instead of usual four.
There is going to be great pressure on many newly elected city council members to deliver for their constituencies. In short expect to hear more "BLM", "inclusion" and "equality" measures and pressure to enact things that will address those issues.
On other side of things city will be broke or nearly so as it faces fiscal issues starting in 2022 or 2024. Most of them were papered over this year thanks to Biden winning and Schumer insuring both NYC and NYS received lion's share of federal stimulus money. Bdeb has largely spent most of those funds, and what is left he and current city council are spending like sailors in a cat house.
2024 being an even number year will also coincide with federal elections including POTUS. National elections tend to be one of the few things that break normal NY voter apathy in that larger numbers of people bother.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | July 15, 2021 6:37 AM |
I'll say something else many may not want to hear; Adams won't have very long to deal with rising crime in NYC. This regardless if things are really that bad or merely perception is they are.

Long as King Cuomo is in Albany BdeB won't get anything near a state appointment (judge, board of directors of a public agency, etc....). Even in 2023 when a new governor takes office (likely not going to be Cuomo), BdeB's name will still be mud.
Biden didn't offer BdeB anything in his administration or elsewhere, so don't think he can expect anything federal either.
Mark my words, BdeB and that wife of his are going to sell those townhouses in Brooklyn while market is hot, then move elsewhere.

Also, I would just like to point out that a major part of the crime solution rests in the hands of the DA’s offices. Police are arresting people who are subsequently released.
On the face of it, bail reform for “non-violent offenses” seems okay. But property crimes are just as devastating. Someone smashes up a delivery bike for kicks; now someone can’t work until/unless they can have repairs made. Shoplifters don’t even get prosecuted unless they steal over $1000. There’s a guy who goes down Lexington Avenue every morning and turns the garbage cans on their sides so the garbage goes all over the sidewalk and into the street. Cops can’t do anything unless they catch him in the act. And if he gets arrested, they have to let him out, anyway. What would the DA convict him with? Littering? He’d have to pay a fine? He’s obviously indigent, so some social justice group would pay the $25 and he’ll be back at it.
Shit like this just gets me down.

Partial list of who gave big money to Adam's mayoral bid.
quote:
Adams’ individual public contributions included some well-known names. Marbury and Brett Yormark, who was Nets CEO from 2005 to 2019, each donated $2,000, the maximum allowed under the law.
But such amounts are overshadowed by what Strong Leadership NYC pulled together in a little more than a month of fundraising. Neither the PAC’s treasurer, Kent Yalowitz, nor its manager, Jennifer Sedlis, responded to a request for comment.
The Adams campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
On election night, Adams famously said, “Social media does not pick a candidate. People on Social Security pick a candidate.”
Below is a list of some of the Strong Leadership donors who likely never will need to cash their Social Security checks.

A note to the anti-Adams troll: No matter how many anti-Adams posts you post, and it looks like there have been dozens, you're not going to change 1) the election or 2) anyone's mind.
