Enya - Orinoco Flow

I just discovered this song. I heard it last week. Of course I have heard and known Enya from that 9/11 song, but thought her music was baththub music. Last week, I listened to this song four times whilst mowing the lawn. It's good, isn't it?

It was also number 1 in the UK!

You’ve either been in a coma for, or have not been on a single elevator in, over 30 years.

by Anonymousreply 1June 29, 2021 8:29 PM

R1 Well, I am very young. And I live in very rural Bavaria. No building with elevators around.

While people make a lot of fun of Enya, it has to be said that "Orinoco Flow" really is a great little song.

by Anonymousreply 5June 29, 2021 8:36 PM

You must know this one, GGG!

R6 I DO! And I love it!

This should have been Germany's entry for Eurovision!!

by Anonymousreply 7June 29, 2021 8:43 PM

I bought the vinyl single years ago.

by Anonymousreply 8June 29, 2021 8:57 PM

Enya is magnificent. She blazed the trail for Two Steps from Hell.

by Anonymousreply 10June 29, 2021 9:47 PM

Bathtub music OP? Kinda overstating it’s importance there.

by Anonymousreply 11June 29, 2021 10:52 PM

“Caribbean Blue” is even better. She makes some truly beautiful music.

by Anonymousreply 12June 29, 2021 10:57 PM

I heard this song for the first time on a commercial for the CD Pure Moods. I loved it so much I bought the CD. Still have it. Yes, I’m old.

I loved how it was used in the English version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. If you look up the scene on YouTube- know that it happens at the end of the movie and there are serious spoilers.

by Anonymousreply 13June 29, 2021 11:15 PM

Here’s the commercial. Nostalgia!

Orinoco Flow is one of my all time favorites. I spent a lot of money on stereo equipment to hear it just right. I'll never tire of it

by Anonymousreply 15June 29, 2021 11:32 PM

R13 & R14 I was already well aware of Enya by the time "Pure Moods" was released (my sister owned the album "Shepherd Moons", and I used to listen to it all the time when she was out of the house). But I bought the 1997 re-relase of "Pure Moods Vol. 1" in 1999, and it was one of the CDs I took with me when I went on a college trip to England & France that spring (another being the recently released "Believe" album from Cher). I recently uploaded "Pure Moods Vol. 1" onto my phone, actually.

Anyway, my favorite track on the album is "The Theme From "The Mission". I hadn't ever been properly introduced to the work of Ennio Morricone before that, though I was familiar with some of his most famous works. By the time I got to London's Virgin Megastore, I was looking for "The Mission" full soundtrack album, and bought it, along with an album of Philip Glass' string quartets as performed by Kronos Quartet.

And as for Enya: "Orinoco Flow" is okay, but I usually skip it in favor of other upbeat tracks like "Book Of Days", "Anywhere Is", or "Wild Child".

Not all music should be performed live.

Studio-made music can be great and beyond the ability of a musician to recreate onstage.

This live performance is terrible, but the recorded studio version is a mood.

A mood, R18? How about a bop?

by Anonymousreply 19June 29, 2021 11:52 PM

It's a beautiful song

Enya is VERY rich.

Bland music really pays off.

by Anonymousreply 24June 30, 2021 12:57 AM

Very rich and lives in a castle. The wealthiest woman in Ireland begorrah.

by Anonymousreply 25June 30, 2021 1:27 AM

^ She needs a fortified castle, she is also the most stalked woman in Ireland and regularly has stalkers arrested

by Anonymousreply 26June 30, 2021 3:24 AM

Why would anyone be interested in stalking a 60-year-old new age singer?

by Anonymousreply 27June 30, 2021 3:58 AM

[quote] Why would anyone be interested in stalking a 60-year-old new age singer?

The person would have to be very young and live in very rural Bavaria with no building with elevators around.

by Anonymousreply 28June 30, 2021 4:01 AM

Don't care what any of you say, I liked a lot of Enya's stuff (although mainly one album) and think her music sound relaxing/beautiful for the most part. I have no problem hearing her music from time to time and it brings back some great memories.

by Anonymousreply 29June 30, 2021 4:21 AM

Kenny G is better!!!!

by Anonymousreply 30June 30, 2021 4:24 AM

Yes, it’s that time of month again!

by Anonymousreply 31June 30, 2021 4:26 AM

Here's an offbeat one i found as a compilation: Scottish Moors. I still love that entire album, especially when I know it's going to rain/or raining.

by Anonymousreply 32June 30, 2021 4:33 AM

I have almost every Enya album, but Shepherd Moons is my favorite. I love it all, though.

If you want to hear a wilder, darker, and more intense Enya, listen to Cursum Perficio and the sudden change halfway through.

Her music helps me reach a higher state of spirituality at times.

by Anonymousreply 33June 30, 2021 6:23 AM

R10, I believe it's:

Turn it up

Turn it up

Turn it up, up, adieu

by Anonymousreply 34June 30, 2021 8:33 AM

"Why would anyone be interested in stalking a 60-year-old new age singer? "

Lots of theories, she seems to be a woman of mystery, never married and never had any known romantic relationship. She's estranged from most of her family due to financial and professional jealousy. She was quite beautiful in her younger years so a lot of wackos think she's saving herself just for them, hence the stalker problem. Plus being the richest woman in Ireland just attracts a lot of attention

by Anonymousreply 35June 30, 2021 8:48 AM

R3 Ha! Now I want one of those! (the fake streudel, not the boy)

by Anonymousreply 36June 30, 2021 8:53 AM

Why is she the richest woman in Ireland?! Surely Bono's wife (ex-wife) must be richer?

by Anonymousreply 37June 30, 2021 9:07 AM

^ Because all her music is written, produced and distributed by her and her two partners. When you own the whole musical pie you get to keep all the money

by Anonymousreply 38June 30, 2021 9:18 AM

R38 She has two partners? Like haughty Tilda Swinton? Damn :P

But she is not a top-seller like Madonna etc...

by Anonymousreply 39June 30, 2021 9:31 AM

She's good, but she's no ZAMFIR, master of the pan flute!

I remember a Saturday afternoon when my now husband and I had intense, alcohol-fueled sex for hours with the Watermark CD playing in the background. Storms in Africa is my favorite track on the CD.

by Anonymousreply 41June 30, 2021 10:54 AM

Love Enya OP. I visited Bacaria a few years ago and it's absolutely beautiful, we went to the oldest brewery in the world or something on top of a hill. Anyone remember the song with the Gregory's chants and heavy breathing? That was a good one too. Very late 80s I think.

You can still be successful and become quite rich even if you're not Madonna

"She has won four Grammy Awards and placed five consecutive albums at top ten on the US Billboard 200. Enya has achieved worldwide record sales of more than 80 million, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time."

That's Enigma, not Enya. The vocals and 'heavy breathing' are by German singer Sandra (Lauer)

by Anonymousreply 46June 30, 2021 11:14 AM

It’s very soothing. Back when it came out I used to listen to it while walking to unwind from work.

by Anonymousreply 47June 30, 2021 11:24 AM

It was everywhere back then. 1990?

Speaking of dark and intense I always loved the mysterious Boadicea from her first album. Very haunting.

"Carribean Blue" topped and tailed the second series of Derry Girls the way "Dreams" by The Cranberries did series one, and it has that same feeling of happiness tinged with sadness, I find.

by Anonymousreply 52June 30, 2021 12:06 PM

^Sorry, "Caribbean"... I'm so tired tonight!

by Anonymousreply 53June 30, 2021 12:07 PM

I'm in Australia R54. It's 10.33pm currently.

^ I figured after I wrote that, 7:30 am here

by Anonymousreply 56June 30, 2021 12:37 PM

R15 Yeah, it's just a masterpiece. To think that she and Nicky Ryan mixed and synthesized the sound of water drops for the song...

by Anonymousreply 57June 30, 2021 12:38 PM

^ I'm always blown away when I think of all the layers of voiceovers and synthesized music is basically just her in a studio. Amazing

i MUCH prefer "Smack my orinoco bitch up"

Speaking of the Orinoco River, did anyone see the '71 film, "Murphy's War" with Peter O'Toole and Sian Phillips?

That German U-boat commander, Horst Janson, was as hot as Helmut Griem ("Max") was in "Cabaret."

by Anonymousreply 65June 30, 2021 1:10 PM

My favourite Enya song is Caribbean Blue. My fey self was obsessed with the (recently restored in 4K!) John William Waterhouse inspired music video which manages to look like stop motion animation. And, added bonus - it features Jonathan Pryce’s favourite actress, Martine McCutcheon.

Enya's music has an ethereal quality to it. Great for relaxing and meditation.

@r68, that restored video is great, all the videos from her greatest hits album are just as enjoyable to watch as to listen to. They're hard to find because she takes them down as soon as they go up, because copyright. "Only Time" is another favorite...

by Anonymousreply 72November 23, 2021 10:46 AM

Enya was nice enough to settle with the Fugees and not take them to court when they sampled Boadicea in Ready Or Not.

I can never hear it without hearing the pizzicato strings of this classic intro:

This was the song that played after I did the curtain speech for a play I was stage managing at a professional theatre back in the day......

I can't remember the name of the play.....but I loved finishing the speech and walking offstage - while Orinoco Flow started to play.....and the house lights went down....and the play started and the song faded out......

A nice memory.
