Nicholas Ray's "Bigger Than Life" (1956)

I just got done watching this or the first time--what a gorgeous, haunting movie. As is the case with most Ray's work, it really is a time capsule of the mid-century nuclear American family, well-acted and visually sumptuous. James Mason plays an ill schoolteacher who becomes addicted to cortisone, which turns him psychotic. Barbara Rush plays his sympathetic wife, and Walter Matthau appears as one of his peers. It was apparently a flop when released, and seems to be one of Ray's lesser-known films.

The drug addition storyline is really ahead of its time and James Mason is great as usual.

I prefer the remake with Jeff Stryker.
