It’s sad how by the year 2000 her singles were not performing well. She didn’t generate one big hit in the 00s!
Weird how her Star Spangled Banner resurged and charted again in the 00s.

It charted again in the 00s because of 9/11, if I'm not mistaken.

Man, her run of hits from 85-91 is insane. I think I counted nine number ones, seven in a row! And not a lot of filler singles that didn't chart high. Every single song is a staple.

Her performance until the mid 90s was great. And then she had a few hits with mostly flops. And then all flops.

It was re-released after 9/11 to raise money for firefighters and victims of the attacks.

Clive, she still didn't chart as well as Madonna and Janet.

She charted WAAAAAY better than Janet

Did not r6. Whitney fell off after Waiting to Exhale and Janet continue to crank out #1s into the 2000s. FACTS

R6 her albums sold more and some singles but Janet’s singles did overall do better

For those of you arguing about who charted the best, here is a ranking using Billboard records. Whitney had 1 more #1 hit than Janet, and one less than Madonna. Rhianna and Mariah were great. The Supremes matched Madonna (and that’s without Diana Ross’ additional six #1 as a solo artist). The Beatles top everyone else.

You're wrong, Jabba.

Janet did great until 2001. Whitney’s hits were bigger hits though.
Madonna is Madonna.

Also, Whitney had one more number one but Janet had more Top 10s. Your whole career isn’t based off of your #1s.
Look at NSYNC, and they only had one number 1, or BSB who had no #1 singles.

I think we can all agree that Whitney's biggest hits have retained popularity more than Janet's biggest hits have. Some of that is due to Whitney's death but a lot of it is due to the fact that Whitney's biggest hits were huge worldwide.

R12, that's especially true with rock bands. Groups like AC/DC, Queen, Guns N'Roses, Metallica and Nirvana had huge hits that never hit number one but are still massively popular today. The fact that they didn't hit number one doesn't make them any less huge.

Whitney had more number 1s (with less singles), more album sales, and more songs that are considered classics than Janet.
Janet is a megastar for sure. But she's not quite in Whitney's league. That doesn't mean Janet isn't worthy of praise or adulation. Whitney just had a bigger career. No shame in that.

Whitney's legend/icon status will live on longer than Janet's and Mariah's.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 27, 2021 9:53 PM |
I agree that number 1's are given too much weight. I think Adele has 4 and Gaga has 5. Meanwhile, Paula Abdul has 6 and Katy Perry has 8 or 9. The former blow the latter out of the water in fame, relevance, and popularity regardless of that metric.
Still, Whitney is clearly bigger than Janet by not just number ones. Album sales, vocal talent, songs that are still relevant and played today. Name recognition.

R16, I think Whitney, Mariah and Madonna will all live on. Madonna's at the same point in her career now as Whitney was in, in the 00s. But I think after she dies, people will remember the younger Madonna, not Madame X. Celine won't live on as much since her music is very much of its time and has 0 appeal to those who are younger. I'm not too sure about Janet. Janet is great but I feel like younger people know even less about her than they do of Madonna.

Not a coincidence. Katy was the Paula Abdul of the 00s/10s. I can't wait for the next Paula Abdul!

Katy is much better than Abdul.

That doesn't mean she is, either.
