Not funny. Spectators are an absolute menace and the riders hate them. A dog was not on leash and ran in front of the riders—and they’re going fast; a rider was brought down by a plastic on his handle and it flipped him. They impede the riders and get scary close when the rode becomes a small funnel.

I saw a video like this just a few days ago - a motorcyclist was in the middle of the bike riders (why?) and suddenly came to a complete stop, causing a massive pile-up of the cyclists. Even after he noticed the havoc he was causing, he still sat there and watched it happen.

If you look at the clip again you'll see that behind the sign her whole hand was stretched-out towards the road so it was that, not the lightweight sign, that caused the crash.

One dumb bitch and a single piece of cardboard took out virtually all the top contenders this year. They've been letting fans get in the participants' faces like this for years so it's surprising it hasn't happened before.

They need to have a hard hand-shaped object attached to a car that's driven ahead of the cyclists so that anyone who gets too close to the racers gets a five-fingered salute.

I love pro cycling, so this time of year is like Christmas morning and my birthday all in one. It's a shame that cycling only gets attention in the US if there is something like this or a doping scandal. I encourage anyone reading to give at least one stage of the Tour a watch. A high mountain stage which will start in the second and third week because it will be more exciting for newcomers. It's a beautiful sport. At the very least, you'll enjoy the beautiful shots all around France. That's how I got interested. I'm a Francophile and loved watching each year just for the scenery. In 2012 Peter Sagan, a sprinter, made his debut, and he was so fun and exciting to watch. I've been a huge fan of cycling, not just the Tour or the other two Grand Tours, ever since. And I want more people to chat about it with. Come watch!

How do they know she hopped on a plane back to Germany? Was someone who looks like her get spottes on airport surveillance? If they spotted her, couldn't they question airline personnel showing them an enhanced image of her, check flight manifests, etc?

I'm not sure why she's considered untraceable. The Tour is a French national institution and treasure. I imagine the French authorities are going all out for this. It wold also be kind of egg on the face of Germany if they don't cooperate on the criminal matter.

After all that woman had to have arrived in France, perhaps stayed a local hotel or similar accommodation at least maybe for one day before morning of race. She also would have been noticed fleeing the scene and returning back to said accommodation, checking out, going to airport and boarding flight.

A German national does not require a passport to enter France (or vice versa), but would need some official identification. This is true when purchasing an airline ticket IIRC.

Those who follow Tour de France know these crash incidents caused by so called fans aren't anything new. There have been numerous incidents over the years, and a few nearly or equally nasty as recent events.

Technology is likely driving more of these loons to seek their fifteen seconds of fame... Nearly everyone has a phone or device with capability to record both still and active images. This and or the smaller but powerful digital cameras that are comparatively inexpensive has lead more persons behave rashly.

Participants in Tour de France are getting fed up, but there is little organziers can actually do. Short of fencing areas off, or stationing police every "X" amount of feet to create a buffer zone nothing else likely would work. Either of those two suggestions would prove to be expensive and or a logistical nightmare. That's all before local populace and fans have their say about everyone being treated as if they were stupid.

Why, oh why, do we pay taxes, hmmm? Apparently woman in question turned herself in to local authorities. That might explain why Tour de France officials have quieted down about bringing legal action.
