I have heard/read elsewhere that Cagney was a closeted homosexual. I'll see if I can find a link.

OTOH, if you've heard the song in its entirety, it's several different verses, each from a different point of view, so you couldn't automatically conclude it meant Coward and Cagney had a thing.
