A two-song performance by Madonna was the big surprise on Thursday night during a Pride party in New York City.

Well, she didn't show up on talk shows dressed as Eva Peron when she was promoting EVITA, did she? Madonna has always been postmodern - meaning that she simply juxtaposes disparate things for kicks without much sense of a coherent meaning. It's all for effect. Spanish (as in Spain) references are rare in US culture, so it's sort of interesting that she has been fixated on it, but tapping into Spanish language generally was wise from a sales point of view. She introduced herself not only to Spanish-speaking Americans by introducing some Spanish, but also to all of Central and South America as a potential audience, and that obviously worked.

I worked on a comms campaign for a pharmaceutical company that made a big push to destigmatize mental health among Spanish-speaking Americans. Their idea was that if they break through the stigma held by Hispanic immigrants in the US, and they begin seeking therapy and take medications, then they'll communicate that to their friends and families back home and the floodgate will burst that has been slowing potential sales throughout Latin America. Very cynical but smart business.

r525 it's called assimilation. Most Italian-Americans today are from families that immigrated to the US over a hundred years ago. Their Italian roots are so far removed, and they're 100% American. Also, they're not fully Italian. I'm younger Gen X and I think I can count on one hand the friends I've had (of European ancestry) whose families have been in the US for generation who are 100% anything. This includes east coast Italian-Americans.
