The great mid-century fashion designers--were they all gay?
I know Halston, Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfld, Yves St. Laurent were all homosexualists, but I know nothing about the mid-century designers who came before them.
Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Cristobal Balenciaga, Pierre Balmain, Norman Hartnell, Charles James, Pierre Cardin, Emilo Pucci... were they as gay as their spring collections?

Why would straight men even want to dress women - except in over-sexualized and cheap ways?

Can you tell us more about Charles James or his family, R4? I find him fascinating.
I was so looking forward to someone telling his life story... then PT Anderson made the (shitty and hugely overrated) PHANTOM THREAD, which purported to be about James. I hated THREAD. It didn't feel like James or his work at all.

The genius of Charles James.
[quote] Cristobal Balenciaga is rumored to have said that James wasn't simply America's best couturier but the world's greatest couturier.

R5. But Lesley Mankiller deserved an Oscar for her performance as Cyril, the cryptodyke sister!
