Glenn Close, Helen Mirren, or Meryl Streep?

Mirren has a greater range of work and and she has taken on risky material like The Cook, The Thief... (can you imagine Streep or Close in that movie, whether you like it or not?). She also has a good resume of classical stage work - she's still the greatest Cleopatra (in Shakespeare's play) I've ever seen.

That said, she does get into some real crap on film and her Broadway performances have been variable (bad in A Month In the Country; uneven in Dance of Death; wonderful in The Audience).

Mirren is more likeable as a personality... down to earth. Streep is talented but she doesn't feel real to me, somehow. There's a distance, a perfection, that creates a wall. Close is just... she's lucky to have done as well as she has and frankly I'm tired of watching her try.

R1 I can agree with that. Mirren is a phenomenal in The Tempest, too.

R2 Close is my favorite out of the three. Meryl's best performance is in Kramer vs. Kramer- she is so unlikeable but I understand her.

Helen Mirren, likable as she is, can’t seem to disappear us into her role. Pretty much, she's always Helen Mirren. Meryl can play rollicking Julia Childs and icy Miranda Priestly, completely and convincingly. Glenn also plays wildly different characters.

Glenn and Meryl do a lot of crap movies, but their best performances are outstanding. Love Helen, and love UK actors, chosen for their chops rather than their looks, but this is one poll where one of the US actors wins.

It's an interesting point, R5, and while I chose Mirren upthread, I agree with your logic. And on that basis, yup, it's Meryl. Close is... but no cigar.

She is fun to watch and takes risks. She also said she loved Madonna’s SEX book and had great admiration for her being sexually ballsy. And Mirren isn’t shy about showing skin.

It's popular to hate on Meryl, but she really is that good. Better than Close and Mirren.
