A question for DL women, are pantyhose still a thing?

I know leggings seem to be popular, but what about hose?

by Anonymousreply 55June 22, 2021 6:38 AM

Yep. So are night gowns.

by Anonymousreply 1June 21, 2021 4:09 AM

Bare legs are in but I feel naked if I don't wear pantyhose.

by Anonymousreply 2June 21, 2021 4:10 AM

They are out of style

by Anonymousreply 3June 21, 2021 4:14 AM

Op, are you a girl/boy/tranny with no friends or family members that are females/drag queens with any sense of style or access to fashion magazines? Why are you asking this here? You could have asked google or a clerk at Macy’s.

by Anonymousreply 4June 21, 2021 4:26 AM

I’m not a woman, but I do know that pantyhose/stockings are never out of fashion. It just depends on how you wear them. In a dressy, professional situation, one should always wear them with a skirt/dress. Bare legs are too informal for work. When I was working for Nordstrom all women were required to wear pantyhoes or leggings with dresses, or anything exposing their legs above the ankle.

by Anonymousreply 5June 21, 2021 4:30 AM

Officially, they are out of style but they’re a good idea in winter or very conservative job settings.

Tights are a good substitute in cold weather.

Better yet, wear pants and solve the problem altogether.

by Anonymousreply 6June 21, 2021 5:16 AM

Hose should be worn in professional settings and formal occasions. Bare legs are unsightly and a ghastly faux pas. See Mrs. Biden's plastered bare legs at tea with QEII for example.

by Anonymousreply 7June 21, 2021 5:33 AM

No offense but some of you are posting from the 80's. Hose are out of style.

by Anonymousreply 8June 21, 2021 5:38 AM

[quote] all women were required to wear pantyhoes

Oh Dear!

by Anonymousreply 9June 21, 2021 5:41 AM

I don't know any woman under 40 wearing hose... unless it is some type of tights or colored stockings.

by Anonymousreply 10June 21, 2021 5:43 AM

R9 pantyhose. There. Mary!!!

by Anonymousreply 11June 21, 2021 5:44 AM

Yes to hos and hoes - no to hose.

by Anonymousreply 12June 21, 2021 5:45 AM

R10, then you must know only uncouth females. Pantyhose are professional and classy. Bare legs are for the beach and the club.

by Anonymousreply 13June 21, 2021 5:48 AM

Department stores still sell pantyhose. I wear pants so not an issue for me. However if I wore a dress or skirt to work, I would wear hose in summer, tights in winter. Younger women in my office do have bare legs.

by Anonymousreply 14June 21, 2021 5:50 AM

r13 is most likely an older man posting on this thread

by Anonymousreply 15June 21, 2021 5:52 AM

O.P., are you trying to round out your drag ensemble? Don’t you know a REAL female on earth that you could ask without shaming yourself? God, what your life must be like.

by Anonymousreply 16June 21, 2021 5:55 AM

R15 ad you are most likely a fat frau who should keep your cellulite legs covered, anyway.

by Anonymousreply 17June 21, 2021 5:56 AM

I buy fake LuLaRoe from Dollar General and cut the ass out.

by Anonymousreply 18June 21, 2021 5:58 AM

Actually r17, I have beautiful legs, probably best part of my body. Besides, who has cellulite on their calves? Pants are just more practical. I used to wear skirt suits, but women don’t wear suits anymore.

by Anonymousreply 19June 21, 2021 6:01 AM

Most women don’t wear them, especially in summer. I haven’t worn them in years. But I have good legs with nice skin. In the winter I do wear black tights or hose on the rare occasion that I wear a skirt. For a funeral in the summer, I would wear a black dress with sheer black stockings, not hose. Even if it’s not required anymore, I like to dress for funerals/church/special occasions.

Legs looks nicer in a pair of good quality sheer hose, and men like the way they look and feel. Maybe younger men don’t, I have no idea. But I’ve found they have a certain erotic appeal; they’re still an intimate item.

by Anonymousreply 20June 21, 2021 6:47 AM

So.... You mean women don't wear garter belts and hose anymore? Thank God Daddy is dead. He'd be so disappointed.

by Anonymousreply 21June 21, 2021 7:40 AM

Are my seams straight?

by Anonymousreply 22June 21, 2021 7:40 AM

They are when you meet The Queen...

by Anonymousreply 23June 21, 2021 7:49 AM

OP? Just out of curiosity, why do you care?

by Anonymousreply 24June 21, 2021 7:56 AM

I love these threads because it is a way to sniff out the fish and block the fraus.

by Anonymousreply 25June 21, 2021 7:57 AM

Do you mean tights?

by Anonymousreply 26June 21, 2021 8:00 AM

During WWII, most stockings were still made of silk and very hard to come by as silk was severely rationed. It was needed for parachutes among many, many other uses by the military. Women used to draw lines down the backs their legs to make it look on first glance as if they were wearing hose.

by Anonymousreply 27June 21, 2021 8:03 AM

I also misread the title as:

A question for DL women, are pantyhose still a thong?

by Anonymousreply 28June 21, 2021 8:17 AM

Don't say hose when you mean stockings or pantyhose. Hose generally refers the tights men wore in the Middle Ages and Renaissance or to that thing you use to water your garden.

by Anonymousreply 29June 21, 2021 8:28 AM

I think hose are out of style, which is a shame when you reach a certain age. I remember an unflattering photo of Julianne Moore with bare legs.

by Anonymousreply 30June 21, 2021 8:33 AM

Hate wearing them, and I think many women do.

Takes me back to when I used to have to wear opaque tights for school, for years; it was a girls’ school in which skirts were compulsory (shockingly backward for the 2000s). Coming from a family who weren’t that well off, I could only have cheapo nylon or wool stockings thar had to last at least a year, and that tended to fall and ladder and rip. They were too hot and itchy and sticky in the summer, and too cold and exposing in the freezing British winter. Plus, they felt frumpy, somehow like a garment my grandmother or an adult office Frau from the 20th century ought to wear.

For the rest of the uniform, we had to wear these with heavy polyester blazers, the ugliest and thinnest pinstripe blouses, and clashing stripey tie—again, uncomfortable, unseasonal no matter the weather, and absolutely unflattering. It didn’t help that, being a typical teen girl at the time I was very insecure about how my scary changing body looked, as well, and would rather have hidden in a pair of trousers and a big sweatshirt a la Billie Eilish.

To me, they have an old-fashioned connotation, even in erotic circumstances. Men like them, of course, but it seems rather regressive that women should dress in garments they find uncomfortable, impractical and unsightly just because men want them to.

by Anonymousreply 31June 21, 2021 8:44 AM

Eldergays wear pantyhose under their caftans.

by Anonymousreply 32June 21, 2021 9:08 AM

I've heard pantyhose can cause women to get infections -- down there -- if worn too long. Those things are supposed to be able to air themselves out, right? Nylon doesn't breathe like cotton.

by Anonymousreply 33June 21, 2021 9:16 AM

R29 hence the word hosiery, which comes from the word hosen, meaning covering.

Tights and stockings have a fascinating history and feature much in social change. Tights/pantyhose actually go back to 1803, stockings and thicker leggings going back decades.

I live in a city which is famous for hosiery. We even have a hosiery section of the city's museum. A griswold is a machine for making socks. If you call someone a Griswold, it means they are mean spirited, miserable or complaining.

R8 and OP - I obviously don't wear it but I just bought my sister some nylons because she calls me around 6 each day for a tour of the city now that tourists are coming. What I see a lot of fashionable European women wear are super sheer black nylons with little black dots or other things on them. They make it work with these high-waisted leather shorts bunched at the waist or even with a flouncy summer dress and can be in pumps. As for capris, everyone is wearing fishnet knee highs under them, paired with Lagerfeld sneakers...black on the studded black sneakers with good ole Karl's portrait or ones matching the color of a feminine and flouncy top if they have the white sneakers. Very cool take. Now my sister wants some so I will be the only beer bellied gay guy buying nylons and pink fishnet knee thighs.

R36 Are you posting from Russia? Wow, that looks tacky.

by Anonymousreply 37June 21, 2021 9:56 AM

I started wondering about that when I saw Melania Trump’s bare legs in pictures taken on cold winter days. Do women not wear them anymore when wearing skirts during winter time?

by Anonymousreply 38June 21, 2021 10:20 AM

R13 a lot of younger professional women have beautiful legs. You don't even notice they're not wearing hose.

In warmer climates many women wear open toed shoes and sandals just which look stupid with pantyhose.

Also consider many professional women also wear pants.

I'm told that hose are a hassle and not practical as they often tear before a woman leaves the house in the morning. It makes sense that women are finding ways around them.

by Anonymousreply 39June 21, 2021 12:04 PM

Sixty-plus dowager here. When I first began wearing "nylons" (which included 60s-mod fishnets), they were held up with garter belts, which were utilitarian and rubbery in a non-erotic way. There was something icky and vaguely shameful about them. Pantyhose were definitely a huge upgrade from stockings. They were freeing and, of course, allowed micro-mini skirts to have their moment. My brand was Beauty Mist, which I purchased in the hosiery department of Jacobson's. Pantyhose got a bad rep when women began buying a ubiquitous shade called "Sun Tan" which was as dreadfully orange as Trump's complexion. Often, Sun Tan hose were paired with white patent-leather (plastic) boots or shoes and the look was CHEAP (and not in a good way). Fashionable gals subsequently began to eschew hose altogether and that twerp, Katie Couric, flashed her greased-up gams on the "Today" show every morning, dooming pantyhose right up to present day. As an elder-broad, I do not appreciate their absence. My legs are nicely-shaped but their skin could definitely use the gentle enhancing that hosiery provides. Also, I miss that "locked and Loaded" feeling from wearing pantyhose. Bare legs just do not looked polished and presentable enough when an old lady gets dressed up for an occasion.

by Anonymousreply 40June 21, 2021 1:44 PM

God no. I hate wearing them. The only time I wear them is if I'm being fancy fancy for some reason and only if I can find silk ones. And good luck with that! Usually you can't even find regular pantyhose in silk so I will compromise and do stockings with a belt. But, I am never fancy fancy anymore so it's not an issue.

R36 is a time traveler from West Berlin in 1983.

by Anonymousreply 42June 21, 2021 2:11 PM

They make your feet and crotch stink. Seriously. It’s more hygienic not to wear them.

by Anonymousreply 43June 21, 2021 2:29 PM

in the winter I wear tights by Snag. man, they're awesome tights. AWESOME

by Anonymousreply 44June 21, 2021 2:30 PM

None of the women I know wear them any longer, though opaque tights still make appearances. It seems that when women stoped wearing them, men started. I see so many guys in tights (with athletic detailing of course) running errands on weekends.

As a small child I remember being fascinated by hose and played with them occasionally, they really added authenticity to a game of cops and robbers. I also remember getting excited whenever my mother bought Leggs brand because I’d get to play with the plastic egg they came in. An old maid aunt who was quite heavy wore a brand called “Big Mama” which I think were the pantyhose equivalent to Husky jeans.

They were always kept after running to use for storing huge onions hanging in the pantry and they make fantastic garden ties for heavy plants like tomatoes. I even remember cutting them latitudinally and using the loops to make pot holders on a little loom.

[quote]OP? Just out of curiosity, why do you care?

[quote]Why are you asking this here? You could have asked google or a clerk at Macy’s.

Do you whores not know what a message is for? I saw this mentioned somewhere else and was curious about it and assumed that it would be a good thread for discussion. If you don't like this thread, then please feel free to move on to some other topic.

by Anonymousreply 46June 21, 2021 3:24 PM

I tend to wear knee highs with long (often denim) skirts to work In cold weather. Formal occasions such as funerals, etc., are not appropriate for bare legs. Men Tend to love stockings in sexual situations.

by Anonymousreply 47June 21, 2021 3:51 PM

R42 - good point. I am seeing that look on German and Spanish students at night when I go out. It's not tacky at all if done right and it has an 80's feel. Then again, in the US, like R37 says, you HAVE to dress like Hillary Clinton. But kids going to clubs and out at night (I am posting from an IT hub in Romania and there are about 20 nationalities at my multinational alone, including Dutch and Ukrainians and Americans) are dressing just like that. Of course, nobody is going to put them or us as models because the women go well over size 4 when they are tall. Russians would NEVER BTW understand the pairing of feminine with the boots, they are usually just the models because of their build.

by Anonymousreply 48June 21, 2021 6:04 PM

I haven't worn pantyhose in years. And I am 53.

Tights are a different matter.

by Anonymousreply 49June 21, 2021 6:49 PM

DL is so educational. I just figured out what pantyhose means. I know what they are of course, but hose plus panties equal pantyhose! Hose is certainly an outmoded thing, but I imagine some people still where pantyhose.

by Anonymousreply 50June 21, 2021 7:28 PM

Well, you educated me ESL student, r50. I'm impressed!

by Anonymousreply 51June 21, 2021 7:30 PM

You are welcome R51. I try to do my part to enlighten the dullards of the world. Give it a few decades, and you might be as smart as me!

by Anonymousreply 52June 22, 2021 2:50 AM

seriously, if you normally wear tights, I cannot recommend Snag Tights strongly enough. Never worn tights that fit so well and last so long. Crazy, I don't know what magic they use.

by Anonymousreply 53June 22, 2021 2:53 AM

Thanks!

by Anonymousreply 54June 22, 2021 6:12 AM

Several DL'ers would benefit from control top pantyhose.
