Senate passes bill to establish Juneteenth as a national holiday

The Senate passed a bill Tuesday to establish Juneteenth, the day marking the end of slavery in the United States, as a national holiday.

After passing by unanimous consent, the bill now heads to the House of Representatives, where its passage is all but assured, then on to President Biden’s desk for signature into law.

Celebrated on June 19, Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, recognizes and marks the emancipation of formerly enslaved African Americans, commemorating the date in 1865 when slaves in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom.

More than 150 years later, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., made a motion to pass the bill via unanimous consent. No other senator objected, including Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., who dropped his previous objection to the bill.

“While it still seems strange that having taxpayers provide federal employees paid time off is now required to celebrate the end of slavery, it is clear that there is no appetite in Congress to further discuss the matter,” Johnson said.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, first introduced the bill last spring at the height of racial tension in the country following the murder of George Floyd, but they could not garner the support needed. Now, about a year later, the bill included 18 GOP co-sponsors.

“It has been a state holiday in Texas for more than 40 years,” Cornyn tweeted Tuesday afternoon. “Now more than ever, we need to learn from our history and continue to form a more perfect union.”

While Juneteenth has been celebrated by some Black Americans since the late 1800s, the holiday has gained in popularity in recent years. Today, cities and towns across the country mark the date with festivals, parades, barbecues and educational events.

“The stakes are a little different,” Mark Anthony Neal, a Duke University African American studies professor, told the New York Times last June. “Many Black Americans feel as though this is the first time in a long time that they have been heard in a way across the culture. ... It’s an opportunity for folks to kind of catch their breath about what has been this incredible pace of change and shifting that we’ve seen.”

If the bill is passed in the House and signed by the president, Juneteenth would become the 11th annual federal holiday.

I'm actually shocked by this.

Republicans are usually NEVER on board with anything to do with recognizing black people.

by Anonymousreply 1June 15, 2021 11:55 PM

I don't think they could've blocked it.

by Anonymousreply 2June 15, 2021 11:58 PM

Wow

This is great

by Anonymousreply 3June 15, 2021 11:58 PM

I'm always in favor of another paid day off.

by Anonymousreply 4June 16, 2021 12:01 AM

Don't we already have a holiday in June?

by Anonymousreply 5June 16, 2021 12:08 AM

No, Memorial Day in May and July 4th.

by Anonymousreply 6June 16, 2021 12:10 AM

Thanks, R6.

June 19 is awfully close to July 4.

It would be a perfect way to bookend a two-week vacation!

by Anonymousreply 7June 16, 2021 12:14 AM

[quote] Don't we already have a holiday in June?

Yes. June 15th is also National Bug Busting Day, Nature Photography Day, and World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

by Anonymousreply 8June 16, 2021 12:25 AM

Is this the only holiday that marks the end of the civil war? It’s shocking it’s taken so long.

by Anonymousreply 9June 16, 2021 12:28 AM

We just celebrated Flag Day yesterday.

by Anonymousreply 10June 16, 2021 12:33 AM

What am I, chopped liver?

by Anonymousreply 11June 16, 2021 12:34 AM

r9, how do you think Memorial Day started? It commemorates the most important thing about the Civil War, which is the sacrifice by so many soldiers to end slavery.

by Anonymousreply 12June 16, 2021 12:36 AM

What national holidays do we have strictly for other races?

by Anonymousreply 13June 16, 2021 12:36 AM

This hits right up against gay pride week.

by Anonymousreply 14June 16, 2021 12:36 AM

[quote] This hits right up against gay pride week.

I wonder if the date was chosen on purpose, to make it sort of an all-encompassing civil rights type of holiday?

by Anonymousreply 15June 16, 2021 12:38 AM

[quote]I wonder if the date was chosen on purpose, to make it sort of an all-encompassing civil rights type of holiday?

That's what Martin Luther King Day is supposed to be about.

by Anonymousreply 16June 16, 2021 12:41 AM

no, r15, I think it was chosen because Juneteenth has a long history, way before Stonewall, and it was a black people's holiday pretty much invented by black people. Gay pride can still happen just as much. Two separate tracks that don't really intersect.

by Anonymousreply 17June 16, 2021 12:41 AM

[quote] What national holidays do we have strictly for other races?

There is no meaningful White Guilt for other races.

by Anonymousreply 18June 16, 2021 12:44 AM

I had NEVER heard of Juneteenth until BLM marched through it in 2020! I'm from California where slavery never had a presence, so I'm assuming that's why we've never heard of it out west. But, I'll take the day off work if the US Senate insists!

by Anonymousreply 19June 16, 2021 12:49 AM

Same here, R19.

Never heard of it until 2020.

Kind of sad, don't you think?

by Anonymousreply 20June 16, 2021 12:49 AM

Now, we need federal holidays in March, April, and August

by Anonymousreply 21June 16, 2021 1:05 AM

As a gay POC Im thrilled. So perfect that its right in the middle of pride month. Im glad people who never heard about it now know. I read about Juneteeth when I was bookworm kid who devoured books about black history. I never thought it would make it to the national stage and here we are.

by Anonymousreply 22June 16, 2021 1:25 AM

Don't they have enough holidays already?

You know, the one that celebrates a genocidal, disease carrying invader from Europe?

by Anonymousreply 25June 16, 2021 2:04 AM

It’s great to have another holiday, and to memorialize the end of slavery, but why does it have to have that idiotic name?

by Anonymousreply 26June 16, 2021 2:05 AM

I agree, R26.

Emancipation Day would have been a better name.

Plus, any excuse to expand a person's vocabulary is a good thing.

by Anonymousreply 27June 16, 2021 2:08 AM

Civil, Labor and Human Rights are important. Moreover, Americans need more PAID Vacation Days, more days off. This is a good thing, any way you look at it.

by Anonymousreply 28June 16, 2021 2:13 AM

Thrilled about the holiday, really don't like the name though. It kind of trivializes the meaning and importance of day. jmo.

by Anonymousreply 29June 16, 2021 2:15 AM

There are African-Americans who are also LGBT. HELLO!

Who's writing all these stupid comments, Russian Trolls? I mean really.

by Anonymousreply 30June 16, 2021 2:16 AM

It is June 19th because on June 19th, 1865 General Gordon Grant arrived in Galveston, TX to take control of Federal Troops and enforce the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is a portmanteau of June and 19th. It has been called that for over 100 years. None of this was just made up for a holiday. Juneteenth has a long history that most white people in America are never taught.

Personally, I never learned about it until 1998 when I was 28 and moved into my place which is a couple of blocks from where the yearly festival is held.

by Anonymousreply 31June 16, 2021 2:21 AM

CAN WE SUDDENLY HAVE IT THIS YEAR?

by Anonymousreply 32June 16, 2021 2:24 AM

[quote]It kind of trivializes the meaning and importance of day. jmo.

r26 and r29 it doesn't. Nobody in the south was saying "June Nineteenth" in the 1865, especially slaves. The point of the holiday is to commemorate and memorialize the actual people it was for, the name doesn't need to be whitewashed like everything else. The fact that the day itself is just on the verge of becoming a holiday and known to many is the result of whitewashing American history. It would be like renaming Yom Kippur to something generic if it was a national recognized American holiday.

by Anonymousreply 33June 16, 2021 2:26 AM

Yes, we understand that, r26. It doesn’t make “Juneteenth” any less idiotic. I don’t care if people have been saying it from the time of Olduvai Gorge.

by Anonymousreply 34June 16, 2021 2:26 AM

R33 it’s dumb, end of. Just give it up already.

Was Christmas called Decembth? That’s nice. NOPE.

by Anonymousreply 35June 16, 2021 2:28 AM

R33- Thank you for explaining that to us. I can't believe that did not know this until a year ago.

by Anonymousreply 36June 16, 2021 2:29 AM

r35 you just give it up already. Calling a historical date idiotic because your small brain cannot wrap your mind around regional dialects that birthed it is the idiotic thing to me. But Im sure you will gladly enjoy the holiday anyway when the bill is passed. This I hope you understand: FUCK YOU

I think the best joke about such holidays was one by Chris Rock talking about McCain/AZ being against the MLK holiday "You've got to be really racist to turn down a day off."

by Anonymousreply 48June 16, 2021 3:25 AM

Juneteenth has existed since 1865. Only now was it made into an official holiday, so WTF are you idiots even implying?

by Anonymousreply 49June 16, 2021 3:26 AM

I love how this shit is a thing all of a sudden. I love it. There’s a Republican challenging Whitmer here in Michigan who wants to cancel all these “celebratory” months. I voted for her, but probably not again. He seems enticing though I won’t vote Republican. But I like his message.

by Anonymousreply 50June 16, 2021 3:30 AM

r50 I can see why you'd want to cancel anything celebratory...living a shithole life in Michigan does that to a person

I know! Good luck, Democrats.

by Anonymousreply 52June 16, 2021 3:35 AM

Right, R47. General Granger purposely waited until the 19th of June 1865 to announce to the slaves in Galveston that they were free just to fuck over Pride.

by Anonymousreply 53June 16, 2021 3:39 AM

[quote] This hits right up against gay pride week. I wonder if the date was chosen on purpose, to make it sort of an all-encompassing civil rights type of holiday?

OMG you can’t be fuck’n serious. Yeah, right they were planning Gay Pride dates and celebrations back in 1865.

by Anonymousreply 54June 16, 2021 3:56 AM

R51, says everything about that asshole that he's more offended by holidays than living among the types of people who try to kill the governor because she had the audacity to try and protect such useless idiots from a virus.

We really do just have a country full of violent morons who get more offended over a holiday than pretty much any despicable, violent actions by white conservatives.

by Anonymousreply 55June 16, 2021 4:00 AM

[quote] It’s great to have another holiday, and to memorialize the end of slavery, but why does it have to have that idiotic name?

Because that’s what the newly freed slaves in 1865 called it. What would you prefer - June 19 day? That sounds stupid.

by Anonymousreply 56June 16, 2021 4:01 AM

And you wonder which dumb, gay cunts are MAGAts. Racist idiots who think a fucking day from 1865 was purposely chosen to ruin present-day gay pride. Jesus fucking Christ.

Are you even capable of feeling shame at all or does supporting Trump and the Republicans just automatically mean you don't possess the gene to feel shame?

by Anonymousreply 57June 16, 2021 4:03 AM

R57, they're psychopaths. No, no shame.

by Anonymousreply 58June 16, 2021 4:12 AM

The announcement and/or enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation did not reach enslaved people at the same time. In different states the end of legal slavery was announced on different days. June 19th was the date in Texas, and has been celebrated for more than a hundred years. Celebrations were initially on different dates depending on the state, but always around the second -to-third week of June. Most white people are unfamiliar with it -especially those who do not have friends in, or close association with, the black community. I made it through college without knowing anything about it -but learned from black friends at work. There have been many efforts through the years to make it a national holiday -it's about time it happened!

by Anonymousreply 59June 16, 2021 4:20 AM

I'm white and I've known about it most of my life. But I grew up in Texas where it's always been a prominent celebration. I think it's great that it's now getting more recognition.

If people want things to be taken seriously on a national level they need to stop sounding illiterate. Woke? Juneteenth? King and Queen everything? Niggaz? Ho? WAP? Language shapes perception. r63 please do not mention WAP in the same post as Juneteenth. So fucking offensive and you are totally, completely missing the point of leaving the name as it has been. The holiday is not about you or what you think sounds better. Just be glad you are about to get an extra day off. If we can have Columbus Day, we can certainly have Juneteenth.

We no longer can have Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, or any other holiday. They are oppressive.

Emotions are still running high after the Randolph Township's Board of Education’s voted to remove the names of all holidays on the school calendar.

The Italian American One Voice Coalition rallied Sunday against the decision to mark holidays as a "𝑫𝒂𝒚 𝑶𝒇𝒇” and not be specific about any holiday.

Randolph education officials met Thursday to discuss and ultimately vote on removing holiday names from the calendar.

It was a heated meeting, in which some showed their anger over a board vote in May that renamed Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day. Members of the Italian American One Voice Coalition say it’s an insult to Italian Americans of New Jersey.

“That kind of takes away peoples’ nationalities to celebrate their heritage,” says Lisa Hubbard, of Dover. “So, I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

The group is demanding that the Board of Education reverse the decision to remove all named holidays from its calendar. It is threatening action against the school board, giving it 30 days to rescind both the Columbus Day and removal of holiday decisions.

Oh, R69, that's just so pathetic. Everyone on DL knows exactly what that old dodge means. You have nothing. And, no, Ebonics won't be making a comeback either. It's like women wanting a holiday to commemorate Susan B. Anthony and the Suffrage movement and asking for it to be called Titsday. Juneteenth will be taken as seriously by 95% of America as Kwanzaa is currently seen.

by Anonymousreply 80June 16, 2021 7:51 AM

Datalounge is a reflection of the Democratic Party and people here, for the most part, do not like the Midwest, so they should just forego Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Not campaign there, not pay any attention to anything there. Just focus on the South and Southwest—you’ll definitely lose a few cycles, probably this entire decade, but maybe in the 2030s things will turn around for Democrats and at least Democrats will be away from whites, white gays, blue collar, working-class people, completely, and you won’t need them anymore because you have Texas, Georgia, etc.

In the last couple of years I was shocked to discover that there actually are people here who think ending slavery was a bad idea...

by Anonymousreply 98June 16, 2021 5:10 PM

The word Juneteenth has nothing to do with Ebonics or any of the other ridiculous stuff racists are saying. It's been called Juneteenth since at least 1903 but probably dates back to about 1890. Look stuff up sometimes, guys, it won't kill you to learn something.

by Anonymousreply 103June 16, 2021 5:18 PM

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that Juneteenth doesn't represent the anniversary of the end of slavery in America. While Texas was the last of the rebel states to free their slaves, the Emancipation Proclamation only applied to the states that rebelled. Delaware and Kentucky didn't rebel, and therefore were allowed to keep their slaves until the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment on December 18th, 1865. Slaves held in tribal territories were not freed until new treaties were signed in 1866 - with the exception of the Cherokee Nation which abolished slavery in 1863, shortly after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Texas continued to fight in the Supreme Court over the right to hold slaves until 1874, which was when freed slaves in Texas finally received full legal status.

What will happen businesses combine Juneteenth with Pride?

by Anonymousreply 105June 16, 2021 5:22 PM

It's not insanity, it's stupidity, r101. Dataloungers are, by and large, stupid. They don't want to know the truth and they don't want you to post about it. They willfully fall for any lie that gets posted that allows them to bitch and moan about the same eight to ten topics they're always bitching and moaning about.

The other day someone posted some fake screenshot of a TikTok video that didn't exist and more than one person told me that *I* was the stupid one for knowing it was fake, THEY were the smart ones for believing it without questioning. That is how stupid people on here are these days.

Don't tell people to look something up because they will fucking FF you into oblivion for even suggesting it. Don't bother their beautiful minds with FACTS, they have racist things to say and facts get in the way of that.

Now excuse me while I sit back and wait for the 4000 replies of "triggered" and "stated her boundaries" and other such witty and intelligent ripostes.

I took your advice and sorry, but they were right about you. You're on the AG Garland thread complaining about Democrats and Muslims. You're on here complaining about the woke and liberals. You're a right winger, stop denying it. You also don't know what brigading is.

by Anonymousreply 107June 16, 2021 5:31 PM

R106, it's why a thread involving criminality or a homophobic slur by a non-white person, is like a dinnerbell was rung and it gives them an excuse to make it about every other person of that race or religion who had nothing to do with it.

i have the person from Michigan on ignore, but let me say this to them: Your fucking state produces some of the most vile militia people. Violent, white supremacists and and you manage to separate them from other white people, yet you don't extend that courtesy to other people of a different race and religion and are on here bitching about "woke" nonsense like that has in any way truly affected your life. I've got news for you: The woke people aren't the ones who threaten you as a gay person. Your white militia brethren are the ones who wouldn't want you in their utopia.

You need to wise up and stop being so god damned provincial acting like a fucking holiday is a reason to vote Republican, but the attempt to kill your governor after the Republican clown made her a target is just "meh." All of the friggin, psychotic right-wing conspiracies are fine, but don't you dare be "woke" enough to believe that not every Mexican is a rapist or every Muslim a terrorist.

The federal government should have preempted this by making January 1st be Emancipation Day. That way we could satisfy people wanting a holiday for this, but not have an extra day for idle people getting paid for no work.

by Anonymousreply 115June 16, 2021 5:52 PM

Juneteenth isn't widely known among whites - but it's always been a holiday for African Americans, particularly in the South.

I remember when we moved to the South when I was young - this is late 70's. First, Memorial Day was not acknowledged as that was a Yankee holiday. Everything was open - including school, post offices, etc.

Then Juneteenth was an unofficial holiday among the black communities. We had never heard of it, but we were white Yankees.

by Anonymousreply 116June 16, 2021 5:55 PM

June 19th - Emancipation Day

Is that really hard?

For those arguing that it's been called that since 1865 so it's not illiterate sounding. Ninety nine percent of blacks in America in 1865 were illiterate. It is illiterate and sounds like it came about because they weren't sure what the actual date was. We have June and we have 19th in the real world. There is no such thing as a Juneteenth.

by Anonymousreply 117June 16, 2021 6:56 PM

There was no such thing as Christmas, either, R117. until someone came along and named it.

When you have an original idea, we'll let you name it whatever you want. Until then... bless your heart!

by Anonymousreply 118June 16, 2021 6:59 PM

YASSSSSSS, R111!!!

You just read that Michigan asshole for FILTH!

by Anonymousreply 119June 16, 2021 7:02 PM

R118, it is June 19th. If people started calling Christmas Decemberith, I'd think they were fucking stupid and illiterate, too. Let them make up a new word for it that doesn't sound like something a not so bright toddler muttered.

by Anonymousreply 120June 16, 2021 7:05 PM

Lord, but you really missed the point, R120. Juneteenth has ALWAYS been called Juneteenth. That's its given name. It is not a bastardization of some other name. "Decemberith" is a bastardization of something that already had a name. Just cuz you don't like a name doesn't mean it is invalid or wrong.

by Anonymousreply 121June 16, 2021 7:43 PM

I don't know what part of the south you moved to, R116. In Texas, we have always had the day off for Memorial Day. I started first grade in 1971 and our school year always ended on the Thursday after Memorial Day. We would be off on Monday, come back on Tuesday and Wednesday to finish up any remaining class work. play games, and watch movies. Then we would usually have an early dismissal on Thursday.

For those of you bitching about the name, how about we let the African-American community call it whatever they want to call it? After all, it is a holiday and celebration created by them for them.

Frankly, r127, who really gives a fuck? If people want to celebrate a particular day and call it Juneteenth, why would I get upset about it? I've always thought it sounded kind of clever. I first read about it a gay black novel, maybe one of E. Lynn Harris' tales of life on the downlow.

"Emancipation Day" was actually January 1, 1863, when Lincoln signed the Proclamation. (January 1 is already a Federal holiday).

We've chosen to observe and honor Juneteenth using its historical name, which is the best call. Maybe it will cause people to look up the name and learn about its significance. Using "Juneteenth" seems more meaningful. It ties the observance to specific human beings in history.

Not who you're talking to r147 but a neologism is a new blending of words, hence the "neo." It's specifically referring to words that have been created but are not yet become accepted within the language. Since "Juneteenth" has been in use since at least 1903 I don't think it can be properly called a neologism.

by Anonymousreply 151June 17, 2021 2:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 152June 17, 2021 2:32 PM

Well, it is to me, r151! Pb-b-b-b-t!

I think my real issue with "Juneteenth" as a word is that it could as easily mean June 13, June 14, June 15,...you get my drift. Nothing to refer exclusively to June 19th, the specific date to be commemorated.

Of course, the same might be said about Christmas and December 25th.

And as surprising as it might sound, I taught for many years to high schoolers a course in Black Literature, from slavery days to Sojourner Truth to the Harlem Renaissance to Nikki Giovanni, Eldridge Cleaver, Richard Wright, and the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. ("Letter From Birmingham Jail")---and never happened upon "Juneteenth."

Hmmmm. I suppose all my White Privilege blather just serves to prove that "Critical Race Theory" ought be taught in American public schools!

President Biden is set to sign the bill at an event with Kamala Harris on Thursday afternoon after it passed through Congress, with 14 Republican members voting against and saying it conflicted with July 4.

'It’s Juneteenth AND reparations. It’s Juneteenth AND end police violence + the War on Drugs. It’s Juneteenth AND end housing + education apartheid. It’s Juneteenth AND teach the truth about white supremacy in our country,' she wrote in a tweet Wednesday night. 'Black liberation in its totality must be prioritized,' the Missouri Democrat encouraged.

by Anonymousreply 165June 17, 2021 7:19 PM

I just did a search of the Dallas Morning News archive for the term "Juneteenth" and the earliest reference to it was in an August 5, 1898 article covering the state Democratic convention. It was mentioned (in a racist way) by a politician in a nominating speech.

Juneteenth (both the term and the celebration) may be new to most people. But here in Texas, it's been going on since 1866 and has been referred to as "Juneteenth" since at least the 1890s (and presumably well before then). It receives coverage in the local media every year. I remember seeing reports of it on the news as far back as can remember.

If you want to keep arguing that it's a made up holiday that didn't exist until recently, we can only assume you're a racist. Or a troll. Or a racist troll.

by Anonymousreply 172June 17, 2021 9:15 PM

And your point, R171? There are posters here implying two things:

1. Juneteenth is a made up holiday that didn't exist until just recently, apparently due to "wokeness".

2. "Juneteenth" is a made up word and shouldn't be used to refer to the holiday, regardless of the history of the word.

I'm just pointing out that the holiday is not a recent invention and that the word has a historical precedent. But when presented with evidence of those two things, either with documentary proof or personal first-hand experiences, the racists troll continue to reject that evidence and continue spewing their racist bile.

I am curious how many people bitching about the name Juneteenth are white. I bet the percentage is high. Since this is a holiday that is about black people being freed from SLAVERY, I say that we let black people name the holiday. They named it Juneteenth over 100 years ago. If they want to keep that name, it isn't up to us honkies to tell them different.

You think it's normal to be outraged by this and then have the nerve to bitch about cancel culture or not take seriously anything the Republicans are trying to do or what Trump did or what his scumbag supporters did?

by Anonymousreply 210June 18, 2021 5:00 PM

This thread is the perfect example of why gay white men are hated and not embraced by everyone in society.

The racism the bigotry and the intentional ignorance of culture and historical American events.

So much for the bullshit stereotypes about the gays being well educated and culturally knowledgeable about history and "understanding" of actual oppressed and marginalized groups etc.

DL is the living embodiment of, it's best to remain silent then to open your mouth and remove all doubt of ignorance!

As I've stated before, gay white men are not marginalized or oppressed. They are still white and male, which make them just like any longer white man. Apart of the oppressor class and apart of the problem. Just because you like a dick up your ass and in your mouth and seaman blasted all over your body, does not make you a minority marginalized or oppressed. You are still white men and being white in this racist country Trumps everything else.

White men can also conceal their gayness, black people cannot conceal blackness etc. You can't have it both ways. If you're white, that automatically cancels everything else out abiut you in the eyes of other REAL minority marginalized groups.

Being a gay white man does not grant you entry. You are after all White! And there's a lot of power in whiteness in America. White men are not marginalized or oppressed, even if you are gay.

You are still a white man!

by Anonymousreply 211June 18, 2021 5:34 PM

But honestly, is today considered a federal holiday?

Apparently, the Yahoo article at R205 said that today IS a holiday.

by Anonymousreply 212June 18, 2021 5:36 PM

R211 is a loon.

Today is a federal holiday, with mail service both Friday and Saturday this year since canceling one of those at the last minute would cause disruption.

by Anonymousreply 213June 18, 2021 7:38 PM

No he isn't, R213. He's right. The instinctive response of the presumably white males on here was that it was essentially some black plot to interfere with Pride. And rather than admit they were wrong when they found out it was something that preceded Pride by over a 100 friggin years, they look for other ways to be their racist selves.

by Anonymousreply 214June 18, 2021 7:48 PM

Happy Marsha P Johnson Day!

R224, get the fucking GOP to agree to anything beneficial to the American people. They're taking credit for the Covid Relief bill when not a fucking one of them backed it.

To me, Juneteenth is White Racism Day.

The day that racists in Texas were forced by Union troops to FINALLY announce to enslaved Texas negroes that they were freed TWO YEARS AGO.

White Racism Day

by Anonymousreply 229June 19, 2021 1:57 AM

The day Republican troops freed the last remaining slaves from their Democrat masters.

by Anonymousreply 230June 19, 2021 7:58 AM

Ahh, the days when the Democrats were the racists before the big flip.

Lincoln would not recognize the party of Lincoln, today, because he would be a Democrat.

So would Eisenhower.

by Anonymousreply 231June 19, 2021 1:31 PM

Will they flip back?

What is really going to drive the white supremacists out of their minds about Juneteenth is it's one federal holiday they can't make all about them.

by Anonymousreply 239June 19, 2021 2:11 PM

How long before we get national gay day?

by Anonymousreply 240June 19, 2021 2:19 PM

Why do we want a stupid holiday? Can’t we be above this? It’s really not a good look.

by Anonymousreply 241June 19, 2021 2:20 PM

"How long before we get national gay day"= no such thing as black homosexuals

One of the greatest things about having juneteenth become a federal holiday. Is that it will forever be in the consciousness of the American public every year in june. And for generations to come, people out of curiosity will Google what juneteenth is and what it was all about, and they'll end up falling down a rabbit hole of American history as it pertains to slavery.

This holiday is a great way to get an education and it will ensure, that what happened to black people in America through slavery will never be forgotten because there's a day to commiserate it's history. Not to mention all of the documentaries and specials that will air about it every year.

I'm pleased about this. This will educate Americans about the horrors and evils of America's original sin perpetuated against black Americans.

by Anonymousreply 251June 19, 2021 4:14 PM

[quote]The day Republican troops freed the last remaining slaves from their Democrat masters.

I like how you wanted it really known what a stupid asshole you are by using "Democrat[sic] masters"

Are you guys even capable of being embarrassed when you use this tiresome argument? How fucking pathetic are you that you think the label "Republican" from those days in any way, shape or form resembles what a Republican is today? Oh, yes, the South is just chock-full of those "slave-freeing" Republicans.

Strom fucking Thurmond switched to Republican because he simply couldn't bare to be associated with those "Democrat masters"!

by Anonymousreply 252June 19, 2021 4:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 253June 19, 2021 5:28 PM

[quote] Is that it will forever be in the consciousness of the American public every year in june.

Only in an alternate universe. For Whites, non-black Hispanics, AAPI, etc., it will just another day in June, just like Jewish and Muslim holidays are ignored by people of other faiths.

Juneteenth shouldn't be a national holiday given that slavery continued. It would take another decade before Texas stopped fighting the federal government and gave African-Americans full rights, well full rights is debatable.

I want the next federal holiday to be election day and gay rights. Make Harvey Milk a federal holiday.

by Anonymousreply 260June 19, 2021 8:07 PM

June 1-19 will now be the lead up and celebration of Juneteenth. Pride month will now be from June 20-30. Ten days is enough for you gays, anyway, right? I've literally seen more Juneteenth celebration ads and programming in the last week than anything gay-related in the first 20 days of the month.

They should have combined Emancipation Day and MLK's birthday into a January holiday like they did with President's Day. Although, I'm sure President's Day will be cancelled soon enough because, ya know, not enough wokeness representation.

by Anonymousreply 261June 19, 2021 9:22 PM

Ah, yes. The days when the Federal government put some muscle behind its orders. Same with Little Rock.

Now? Interminable waiting to punish violent and murderous traitors!

by Anonymousreply 262June 19, 2021 10:08 PM

Enslaved people, which are people who were free but became slaves, were just part of the total number of people who were slaves. There were also people born as slaves. When talking about slaves, people should include both enslaved people and people born as slaves.

by Anonymousreply 263June 19, 2021 10:21 PM

I'm glad Juneteenth is now a national holiday. And recently the House passed making D.C. our 51st state. Now all they need to do is include Puerto Rico as the 52nd and Guam as the 53rd.

by Anonymousreply 264June 19, 2021 10:30 PM

USVI as the 54th.

by Anonymousreply 265June 19, 2021 10:31 PM

This is just going to turn into an annual excuse for the blacks to go on the rampage and vandalize etc, just like Cinco de Mayo is for the Mexicans.

by Anonymousreply 272June 20, 2021 4:48 PM

r270, White racists kept the emancipation secret from Texas slaves for two years and from other whites for 136 years.

R270, That’s a reflection of your deep, entrenched ignorance

by Anonymousreply 274June 20, 2021 7:02 PM

It's just seems a bit excessive to have another holiday.

by Anonymousreply 275June 20, 2021 7:04 PM

by Anonymousreply 276June 20, 2021 7:06 PM

Cinco de Mayo isn't for the Mexicans. It's an excuse for 600 pound Americans to drink sweetened alcoholic beverages and eat Taco Bell.

by Anonymousreply 280June 20, 2021 7:41 PM

"Juneteenth" sounds illiterate. I think any other group of people would be embarrassed to have a holiday for them have a name that was such poor English.

by Anonymousreply 281June 20, 2021 8:04 PM

This was something local to Texas, a state most other Americans despise. It doesn't make sense to have it as a national holiday. The date of the Emancipation Proclamation would've made a lot more sense.

by Anonymousreply 282June 20, 2021 8:05 PM

It's about the white racism of not telling TX slaves they were freed two years earlier...

by Anonymousreply 283June 20, 2021 8:11 PM

[quote]It's about the white racism of not telling TX slaves they were freed two years earlier...

It was an issue local to Texas, why should it be a national holiday? Celebrate the Emancipation Proclamation instead.

It's about NATIONAL white racism.

by Anonymousreply 285June 20, 2021 9:18 PM

[quote]"Juneteenth" sounds illiterate. I think any other group of people would be embarrassed to have a holiday for them have a name that was such poor English.

The holiday is about black people, not about white man's English

[quote]Celebrate the Emancipation Proclamation instead.

Here's another factoid for those who apparently never met a black person in their life, or are ignorant in matters of black history. Black people already celebrate the Emancipation Proclamation by having "Night Watch" services on December 31, New Year's Eve. Today they are usually church services held to bring in the new year. If this did come in the form of a federal holiday in the United States, we would have two consecutive federal holidays.

I really don't need ANOTHER three day weekend, do you?

R265: Yes of course the USVI should be the 54th too. Just to keep the number of stars on the flag an even number.

by Anonymousreply 291June 20, 2021 11:19 PM

I wonder how many of those who were freed would have gone to go back to Africa, if given the option.

by Anonymousreply 292June 20, 2021 11:21 PM

Exactly, R292. Liberia seems to have failed.

by Anonymousreply 293June 20, 2021 11:23 PM

"Go back to Africa". That is a reasonable comment, not racist at all. Their tiny pointed white snoods are on display just because they are receiving an additional three day weekend, between Memorial day and the fourth.

[quote]I wonder how many of those who were freed would have gone to go back to Africa, if given the option.

I'm glad they didn't, so their posterity could one day benefit from their suffering and free labor that built America. And check racist bitches on the internet.

by Anonymousreply 295June 20, 2021 11:38 PM

That wasn’t what I said, R294. I really do wonder how many would have chose to go to Africa and how many would have thought it would be better to stay.

My parents are the children of immigrants and I always think that if it weren’t for the circumstances of the past, I would have never been born. The same applies to black Americans. If it weren’t for slavery, they would never have been born. Slavery was a terrible, atrocious, unthinkable thing for those were directly affected, but if it didn’t happen, black Americans would not be here now.

by Anonymousreply 296June 20, 2021 11:42 PM

by Anonymousreply 297June 20, 2021 11:43 PM

whatever, bitch.

by Anonymousreply 298June 20, 2021 11:47 PM

Meanwhile it is a dream for many Africans to immigrate here. Strange considering the country is so racist.

Shouldn't they be warned to stay away?

by Anonymousreply 299June 20, 2021 11:48 PM

No one, not even "the blacks" is interested in immigrating to the USSR.

by Anonymousreply 300June 20, 2021 11:52 PM

[quote]Slavery was a terrible, atrocious, unthinkable thing for those were directly affected, but if it didn’t happen, black Americans would not be here now.

You do realize it was totally possible black people could have come to the US at some point without being slaves right? Like your grandparents did?

Like you really thought you said something there, didn't you?

[quote]I really do wonder how many would have chose to go to Africa and how many would have thought it would be better to stay.

You really have no clue what that trip was like for African slaves, do you?

by Anonymousreply 301June 20, 2021 11:52 PM

Interestingly, African immigrants to the US hate African Americans. They say all the same things about them that racist white people say - they're lazy, violent, ignorant, no fathers to raise the kids, criminal etc. It's really shocking when you hear them go off on the subject.

by Anonymousreply 304June 21, 2021 12:13 AM

Because they hate being lumped in with them, R304. And, there's no leg to stand on in the argument that African Americans have it worse because those black immigrants from everywhere are, in fact, lumped in with them and treated the same as them by the very same people that African Americans blame for keeping them down.

by Anonymousreply 305June 21, 2021 12:32 AM

R172 most Mexicans, or people who are actually from Mexico both in the USA and Mexico, do not celebrate cinco de mayo. Mexican friends tell me how more Chicanos or Mexican-American gringos celebrate cinco de mayo than most Mexicans do, unless they are super close to the USA border. My Mexican friends from Acapulco and Mexico City do not celebrate cinco de mayo at all.
