Our Sister Lisa Banes Dies

Actress Lisa Banes has died after a hit-and-run incident in Manhattan. She was 65.

Banes' rep confirmed the news to ET on Monday, sharing, "We are heartsick over Lisa's tragic and senseless passing."

"She was a woman of great spirit, kindness and generosity and dedicated to her work, whether on stage or in front of a camera and even more so to her wife, family and friends," her rep continued. "We were blessed to have had her in our lives."

The actress -- best known for her roles in Gone Girl and Cocktail -- was struck by a person on a scooter while walking down the street on June 4.

Banes' manager previously told the Associated Press she was struck by either a scooter or a motorcycle in the Upper West Side of Manhattan near Lincoln Center as she was crossing Amsterdam Avenue on the way to visit her alma mater, the Juilliard School. She was being treated at Mount Sinai Morningside hospital for "substantial injuries."

Banes reportedly suffered a traumatic brain injury due to the incident, and she never recovered, according to The New York Post. Police say that no arrests have been made in connection to the incident.

Banes starred opposite Tom Cruise in the 1988 romantic dramedy Cocktail, and played Martha Gellhorn in the TV mini-series Hemingway the same year. Notably, she played the mother of Rosamund Pike's character in Gone Girl, and her most recent role came in the horror series Them.

Notable film and TV credits include China Beach, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, One Life to Live, NYPD Blue, A Cure for Wellness, Six Feet Under, Boston Legal, Royal Pains and Nashville, among many others.

What a sickening loss. I’m sorry for her wife and other people who loved her.

by Anonymousreply 1June 15, 2021 10:22 AM

Her wife should get a scooter

by Anonymousreply 2June 15, 2021 10:34 AM

Crossing the street is how I was hit by a car. Drivers do not give a fuck.

by Anonymousreply 3June 15, 2021 11:05 AM

Never heard of her. Honestly. Sounds like an old timey actress and I refuse to watch any black and white movies so maybe that's why I don't know who she is?.

by Anonymousreply 4June 15, 2021 11:10 AM

I hope they catch the criminal coward who committed this crime. Fleeing the scene of an accident/crime that you are involved in is one of the worst offences around I believe.

by Anonymousreply 5June 15, 2021 11:15 AM

Very sad. I loved her work so. I actually wrote a script years ago with her in mind.

I hope the vile piece of shit who murdered her gets what's coming to him, either by law or by karma.

PS - She always looked FABULOUS. Always. She was always the most interesting thing in whatever she was in, and the bitch LOOKED flawless, too!

I never knew she was a lesbian. I was surprised to find out how young she really was in Cocktail after they made her seem so much older..

by Anonymousreply 7June 15, 2021 1:35 PM

PS "our sister"

I love you, OP. Have tears in my eyes. xoxo

by Anonymousreply 8June 15, 2021 1:36 PM

Link lazy fat whore OP.

by Anonymousreply 9June 15, 2021 2:40 PM

There is a link at R6, even fatter whore R9

by Anonymousreply 10June 15, 2021 4:08 PM

She was hilarious as the bitchy, lusty Mayor Anita Massengil on Son Of The Beach, with her wildly gay son Cody.

Rest In Peace.

Bet it was one of those Julliard students rushing to class.

by Anonymousreply 12June 15, 2021 4:35 PM

Very sad, I had hoped she would recover. She was always one of my favorite character actresses, and of course co-starred in DL fave "Mother May I Sleep With Danger?"

by Anonymousreply 13June 15, 2021 4:39 PM

She was married to a woman? (surprise)

She had a Diana Muldaur look/sensibility about her. This is really very tragic.

People on scooters are a fucking menace. A couple of times I've almost been hit by one too. People go too fast, aren't paying attention, and don't obey stop signs or other rules of the road for moving vehicles. I wish they'd outlaw those things.

by Anonymousreply 16June 15, 2021 4:48 PM

I had no idea she was a lesbian until the news of the hit and run broke.

She was never a household name but she reminded me of actresses like Hariret Sansom Harris - fantastic persona on stage, often best used in comedy or bitchy roles, especially farce and/or playing upscale characters.

by Anonymousreply 17June 15, 2021 4:56 PM

Plus this happened at night.

by Anonymousreply 18June 15, 2021 4:57 PM

They don't show the episodes of the show on the net free anymore :(; just found an episode in my German.

I don't like speaking ill of the dead, but she wasn't aging very well for being 65

by Anonymousreply 20June 15, 2021 7:17 PM

Who says?

by Anonymousreply 21June 15, 2021 7:19 PM

Are you 5 years old, R4? Go back to Tik-Tok.

by Anonymousreply 22June 15, 2021 7:45 PM

Former Police Commissioner Bill Bratton says the problem will get worse. The City Council and our government continues to encourage the use of bikes. There is no ability to enforce them. District Attorneys don’t want to prosecute, the laws don’t work with you. Trying to stop them as police pursue, could lead to running into someone and injuring themselves. Compounding the problem is that deliverers are largely from an immigrant population. The city government does not want to do anything that deters their ability to make a living. Bratton was nearly clipped coming out of a diner by a biker going 25 mph. He also warned that CitiBikes will soon be electrified.

by Anonymousreply 23June 15, 2021 8:32 PM

Amd NOBODY wants to issue licenses and license plates because *whiny voice* that wouldn’t be fair to certain populations.

by Anonymousreply 24June 15, 2021 11:12 PM

These scooters are like locusts.....I also see alot of "urban" kids riding them so they are clearly easy to "borrow"

by Anonymousreply 25June 16, 2021 12:08 AM

R25, just say it, " Black kids in New York steal." No need to be subtle on DL

by Anonymousreply 26June 16, 2021 12:13 AM

Loved her in "Six Feet Under"as the ex-sitcom star/knitting studio friend of Ruth.

NYC is a shithole these days.

by Anonymousreply 27June 16, 2021 12:17 AM

She had a very “if Holland Taylor isn’t available get Lisa Banes” vibe.

by Anonymousreply 28June 16, 2021 12:17 AM

[quote]I had no idea she was a lesbian until the news of the hit and run broke.

When I read the impact knocked the cane from her hand, I knew.

by Anonymousreply 29June 16, 2021 12:25 AM

Very sad

by Anonymousreply 30June 16, 2021 12:27 AM

Reminds me a bit of Richard Bright, another long-time character actor (most notably Al Neri in The Godfather Trilogy: he took care of Fredo in the boat). Bright was killed in 2006 by a bus on Columbus Avenue, near his apartment. His wife was another great character actor: Rutanya Alda, aka Carol Ann in “Mommie Dearest.”

I ride a scooter like a little old lady. Slow, in the slow half of the bike lane, in the right direction, following all the rules, wearing a helmet, etc. But I do see people being complete assholes on them.

I’m sorry for Ms. Banes and I know this is DL, but there’s no reason to be cunty about her death. As far as I know, she didn’t do anything objectionable to anyone.

by Anonymousreply 32June 16, 2021 1:03 AM

i worked with Lisa the summer before she began Julliard / she would have been 23. Nicest person imaginable. I don't think her resume even begins to reflect her immense talent and kindness. Total class act, even at 23!!

by Anonymousreply 33June 16, 2021 1:42 AM

When they say scooter, do they mean the kind like a vespa or do they mean the ones that are essentially electric motorized razor scooters.

I know several people who've been hit and serious injured by the latter in NYC.

Those idiots riding them don't follow any rules and ride as if they're pushing using human power.

by Anonymousreply 34June 16, 2021 1:45 AM

R33 Thank you, that is lovely to know.

So far everyone has nothing but lovely things to say about her.

by Anonymousreply 35June 16, 2021 1:46 AM

[quote]When they say scooter, do they mean the kind like a vespa or do they mean the ones that are essentially electric motorized razor scooters.

I've seen several vespa-type and they don't even stop at red lights. They get in the bike lane or ride between cars and do whatever they feel like.

by Anonymousreply 36June 16, 2021 1:50 AM

Such a sad story and tremendous loss. Thanks for sharing R33.

by Anonymousreply 37June 16, 2021 1:55 AM

The scooters in my city have the right of way----as if I bought a CAR so I can follow these scooter lunatics going 8 miles an hour---all because my city wants to call itself "exercise friendly"...

by Anonymousreply 40June 16, 2021 2:28 AM

There is a bike lane across from my apartment, scooters and ebikes go flying while kids and people on citibikes are trying to use the lanes. In the park, cyclists ride at top speed on the crowded park road. It is frightening trying to cross. So much for DuhBlasio's Vision Zero initiative.

by Anonymousreply 41June 16, 2021 2:52 AM

R42 They separated before he died so that may have been part of the "was."

Or, y'know, he WAS alive and is now not

by Anonymousreply 42June 16, 2021 3:55 AM

r22 I think that guy was making fun of the poster who wanted old movie recommendations but refused to watch black & white movies or musicals.

by Anonymousreply 43June 16, 2021 10:06 AM

Christ, when did they rename St. Luke’s Hospital to Mount Sinai Morningside? That hospital goes back to the 19th century for Christ sake!

by Anonymousreply 44June 16, 2021 10:17 AM

"When I read the impact knocked the cane from her hand, I knew."

Bwaaaaah! That's hysterical! You should be a writer for SNL, because you're just as funny.

by Anonymousreply 45June 16, 2021 10:29 AM

Those fucking electric or other motor powered scooters are everywhere, and a damn menace.

Sadly things are only going to get worse in this fucking woke city as more are coming.

NYPD doesn't enforce scooter or bike laws for foot powered much less motorized.

I live near a nyc beach and the boardwalk is littered with electric operated motorcycle -mopeds type vehicles using a damn bike lane going like 30 plus mph! These innocent "scooters" are practically conventional motorcycles without the gasoline. There needs to be a ban on those types of "e-vehicles" from being an unlicensed -uninsured. Especially should be banned from bike lanes and boardwalks.

R44

Roosevelt, opened in 1871 is now Mount Sinai West. Name change in 2015 against objections of the Roosevelt family. The only hospital Mount Sinai bought that kept its name is Beth Israel

by Anonymousreply 52June 17, 2021 10:14 AM

On June 16 Senator. Brad Hoylman and Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal held a press conference at the corner of West 64th Street & Amsterdam Avenue calling for the passage of legislation (S.7212/A.8128) that would increase the penalties for conducting a hit-and-run with an electric scooter consistent with the Felony law against leaving the scene of an automobile collision without reporting.

The conference follows the death of actress Lisa Banes, who died this week after an electric scooter rider hit her at this corner and fled the scene.

by Anonymousreply 53June 17, 2021 11:58 AM

They should be able to easily track the person that hit her by triangulating the phone signals inside their pocket at the time of collision. To winnow down suspects, they could pull all the phone data location of every phone within proximity ten minutes before and after, with a bit of sleuthing.

Right now it’s considered an invasion of privacy but totally doable.

by Anonymousreply 54June 17, 2021 12:05 PM

R53 That explains why they haven't caught the fucking cunt yet.

If it was a Scooter (as in Vespa or something similar) they would have had a number plate and they could have picked them up through footage of the traffic.

I fucking hate those electric things. All over the footpaths, roads and bike paths. They are the worst of the worst.

by Anonymousreply 55June 17, 2021 2:07 PM

Who IS Beth Israel, anyway?

Why isn't she Elizabeth Israel?

by Anonymousreply 56June 17, 2021 7:05 PM

This is like a 70s gay movie: one had to die.

Confusion among prosecutors almost led to the release of the man charged in the New York hit-and-run death of actress Lisa Banes, who appeared in the films Gone Girl and Cocktail, as well as Broadway and television.

A prosecutor mistakenly told the judge at a hearing that suspect Brian Boyd had to be released without bail. He would have been on supervised release had the motion gone through.

Manhattan Criminal Court Judge James Clynes was later advised of the mistaken advice, and set bail at $30,000 for Boyd. He was arrested Thursday for the June 4 collision that resulted in Banes’s death.

After running over Ms. Banes, suspect Brian Boyd went straight to a Harlem bike shop to get wheels on his scooter repaired.
