A lot of actresses are tiny, so it's actually easier for shorter male stars. I imagine it's difficult for 6'5 Lee Pace to be cast in certain things just based on height alone.

What's the perfect height for a male actor? Six feet even? That way he doesn't tower over the tiny actresses too much but can also hold his own height-wise with the tall and willowy ones.

5' 10" to 6' is a great range for a male actor to be. A bit above average to nicely tall.

Hollywood is telling us that TimoTay is a sex symbol/leading man so obviously things like height really don't matter anymore when it comes to stars.

Paul Newman was a notorious enhancer about his height and touchy about it. I ran into him circa 1989 and I'd guess he was about 5'8" on a good day. He had a very petite build so he actually seemed smaller.

I’m a 6’5 actor but I tell casting directors I’m 6’2. 5’11 is probably preferred height for an actor. Many castings directors will see 6’5 on my resume and pass right by me.

Agreed, if not less. I ran into him professionally around 2004, and he was shorter than me. I'm 5'8" (and 1/2) so he was probably closer to 5'6". Now, he was old and looking quite frail at the time so it is possible he had shrank a little by then. Hell, if I remember right, Joanne was about the same height and she's listed as 5'4".

On film, height isn't that big of a deal. You can always put someone on an apple box to better match their co-star for medium shots and close ups. You'll see more specific height requirements for stage. There are a lot of roles where anyone shorter than 6 feet need not apply. Height differences are impossible to fake on stage.

Celebrities I've met are generally shorter than I expect, but it's not just height - they tend to extraordinarily thin, even the men - just surprisingly petite.

Kiefer Sutherland, Jared Leto, Chris Evans, Justin Theroux....all shorter than you'd expect and remarkably thin, almost as if they could wear XS or clothing sizes for Boys.

Honestly, my experience is that people in Los Angeles generally tend to be thinner than people in other parts of the country - maybe it's group pressure, I don't know.

This is very true. TV and movie actors, when you see them in person, look almost malnourished. Even guys who looks muscly. In particular I remember meeting Dennis Quaid (meh, face like a road map) and the poor guy looked like he just escaped Devil's Island. What scares me is when you see super thin people ON screen (Shelley Duvall, DJ Qualls) and you realize they must be walking skeletons in real life.

What photographs well can look odd in real life.

Successful film and TV star actors do have a "look". Petitely muscular but with big heads and big eyes.

R4 RDJ is a midget! I was laughing when I saw him standing next to Chris Evans in The Avengers and they were almost the same height! He must have been standing on a box or something. Chris Evans is about 6 feet tall. I met him and he is no where close to being the same height as RDJ.

I'm 6 2 and when I was in my 20s in the 80s met Trump a few times and he seemed quite large and tall.

R21 sometimes Mother Nature or genetics just pours it ALL in, for an embarras de richesse. This was my unhappy lot. I modeled to pay my way through Dartmouth, and dabbled in off-broadway. After graduation I tried to transition into acting. But the message was that I was too handsome, too tall, and my family equipment was especially too big. They said it caused unwanted complications for blocking shots and for the cinematography. So I became a reconstructive plastic surgeon, giving something back, for the people in horrible disfiguring accidents, or just losers of the genetic lottery.

All actors do this unless they really are 6 foot or 5’10 if it’s a woman. I understand James Gunn being upset but also casting directors will look over people for the height. So, I don’t blame them.
