What Roles Could've Vivian Vance Played?

I mean realistically, after "I Love Lucy" was done.

by Anonymousreply 102July 25, 2021 5:37 PM

I consider this Vance woman to be totally uninteresting but she could have played all the Shirley Booth roles and Thelma Ritter roles.

The three are indistinguishable.

by Anonymousreply 1June 14, 2021 11:46 PM

Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate

by Anonymousreply 2June 14, 2021 11:48 PM

Mrs. Robinson.

by Anonymousreply 3June 14, 2021 11:48 PM

Debbie in Debbie Does Dallas.

by Anonymousreply 4June 14, 2021 11:48 PM

She could have played all the Brenda de Banzie roles.

Any middle-aged character woman.

by Anonymousreply 6June 14, 2021 11:50 PM

"Dutch Oven: The Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine Love Story"

She could play Ethel or Ernest.

by Anonymousreply 7June 14, 2021 11:51 PM

Edie Grant on MTM.

by Anonymousreply 8June 14, 2021 11:53 PM

She would have been a fun interim housekeeper for the Brady's when Alice went to work at the diner because the kids were mean to her. Better than that sour puss Kay who didn't want to play basketball with the boys or stay and watch tv with the kids because she had her own tv at home.

by Anonymousreply 9June 14, 2021 11:57 PM

Belle Rosen in The Poseidon Adventure

by Anonymousreply 10June 15, 2021 1:20 AM

She was very good on Rhoda as the neighbor. I know she had mental health issues but even William Frawley had another long role on a sitcom. Still I can't think of any roles. I never saw her as a motherly types as when she was on "the Lucy Show," she had absolutely no chemistry with her TV son and didn't seem at all motherly toward the kid. Though all three child actors from "the Lucy Show" said very nice things about her.

by Anonymousreply 11June 20, 2021 7:14 PM

She'd have been a better Mame than Lucy.

by Anonymousreply 12June 20, 2021 7:16 PM

Agreed. But she could never play Lucy. Never.

by Anonymousreply 13June 20, 2021 7:19 PM

Helen Lawson

by Anonymousreply 14June 20, 2021 7:19 PM

One of Charlie's original Angels.

by Anonymousreply 15June 20, 2021 7:22 PM

Vivian should have gotten more critical credit for her action hero roles.

True story- Andy Warhol courted her to star as the murderous matron in Andy Warhol’s Bad after serious consideration, La Vance decided it would upset her loyal fan base. Carroll Baker got the part.

by Anonymousreply 17June 20, 2021 7:27 PM

She would have made a GREAT Cora Hoover Hooper and kept ANYONE CAN WHISTLE running all season long. Same thing with DEAR WORLD. Anything Lansbury could do, Vance could do better.

by Anonymousreply 18June 20, 2021 7:29 PM

Always liked her… as much as Lucy. Didn’t think she was ugly by any means. She just appeared to always have an easy going personality

by Anonymousreply 19June 20, 2021 7:31 PM

R9, my guess is that sour puss Kay wasn't really so dour. She poured it on with the kids and Carol so that they'd miss Alice all the more.

Especially that bitch Marcia.

The late Mary Treen made an impact with that role as we all remember Kay so well.

Treen amassed over 215 credits during her acting career; she died at the age of 82 in 1989.

by Anonymousreply 20June 20, 2021 7:33 PM

Maude!

by Anonymousreply 21June 20, 2021 7:34 PM

Did she ever do "Hello, Dolly!" She would have been great as Dolly Levi. The whole show is sort of one long Lucy show, anyway.

by Anonymousreply 22June 20, 2021 7:37 PM

[quote]She'd have been a better Mame than Lucy.

I'd have been a better Mame than Lucy

Queen Margaret

by Anonymousreply 31June 20, 2021 8:26 PM

Mama Rose

by Anonymousreply 32June 20, 2021 8:29 PM

Alice Pearce was perfect but Vance would have been good as Gladys Kravitz. Bonus points if they cast William Frawley as Abner.

by Anonymousreply 33June 20, 2021 8:43 PM

Viv would have made an intriguing Sue Ann Nivens.

by Anonymousreply 34June 20, 2021 8:49 PM

“What roles could’ve”, OP?

You did that on purpose, right?

by Anonymousreply 35June 20, 2021 8:58 PM

Kate Bradley on Petticoat Junction

Mrs. Roper on Three's Company

Had she lived, she would have been a great Golden Girl!

by Anonymousreply 36June 20, 2021 10:21 PM

Judith Lowry would have been a better Mame, r12.

by Anonymousreply 37June 20, 2021 10:22 PM

Vance didn't do ditzy, r33.

by Anonymousreply 38June 20, 2021 10:24 PM

There was an episode of I ❤️ Lucy where Vic dresses up as a VIXEN. DL people approved. Instead of Stockard Channing -Vivian Vance as RIZZO in GREASE!

by Anonymousreply 44June 21, 2021 1:10 PM

VIV dresses up not Vic

by Anonymousreply 45June 21, 2021 1:12 PM

Viv Tayback

by Anonymousreply 46June 21, 2021 1:13 PM

Viv Morrow, the Headless Horsewoman.

She may be a girl but she's not like you.

by Anonymousreply 48July 21, 2021 5:02 PM

The manly Brady Maid

by Anonymousreply 49July 21, 2021 5:08 PM

A Golden Girls character. Perhaps a different take on Dorothy? Viv could do sarcastic.

by Anonymousreply 50July 21, 2021 6:28 PM

A 2000 year old piece of petrified wood would have been a better Mame than Lucy!!

by Anonymousreply 51July 21, 2021 6:33 PM

Vivian should have played Vera Charles when MAME was filmed. Getting Lucy and Vivian back together again could not have hurt the movie. And it might have made it a great deal better. Vivian was always great when she was angry or annoyed with Lucy. And their "Bosom Buddies" would have been one for the ages.

by Anonymousreply 52July 21, 2021 6:34 PM

She could play any role Doris Roberts did.

by Anonymousreply 53July 21, 2021 8:31 PM

Melanie Daniels in "The Birds"

Miss Jean Brodie

Bree in "Klute"

by Anonymousreply 54July 21, 2021 8:38 PM

If there had only been a 60s movie musical where they had played your favorite and mine, "Shortnin' Bread"!

Maybe she could have played the Baroness in "The Sound of Music" and they could have worked it in.

by Anonymousreply 55July 21, 2021 8:41 PM

I could see a reoccurring character carved out for her on Bewitched. Maybe Uncle Arthur's wife.

Could she been an occasional neighbor on The Jeffersons?

by Anonymousreply 56July 21, 2021 8:45 PM

[quote] And their "Bosom Buddies" would have been one for the ages.

You can kind of see what their Bosom Buddies would have been like when they do Friendship on I Love Lucy.

I wish The Love Boat had written in a role for Viv. Maybe the head of the kitchen staff or the manageress of the gift shop.

by Anonymousreply 58July 21, 2021 9:19 PM

[quote] Maybe Uncle Arthur's wife.

You know damn well Uncle Arthur never had a WIFE. Husband maybe but not wife.

by Anonymousreply 59July 21, 2021 9:32 PM

It was TV, Uncle Arthur could have had a wife.

by Anonymousreply 60July 21, 2021 10:25 PM

She was so disappointed in being passed over for Scarlett O' Hara in Gone With the Wind, she nearly ended her career. We are all grateful that she decided to stick it out.

by Anonymousreply 61July 21, 2021 10:32 PM

I've think she'd have been brilliant as the more talented friend

who laughed her ass off

as Lucy croaked her way through the musical version of "Mame"

by Anonymousreply 62July 21, 2021 10:40 PM

I will never understand why they chose Rita Hayworth over Vivian, for Miss Sadie Thompson.

by Anonymousreply 63July 22, 2021 2:12 AM

Rosemary, the school teacher in "Picnic". It was played wonderfully well by Roz Russell. But I'd have liked to see what Vance would've done with it.

by Anonymousreply 64July 22, 2021 2:26 AM

Roz hammed it up from start to finish. It's a bravura performance, but "bravura" has no place in the midwest in the 1950s. Vivian might have given it some real heart.

by Anonymousreply 65July 22, 2021 2:31 AM

R64 Yeah, it's a bit over the top, but I can appreciate the performance nonetheless. Of course, the character was also drinking/drunk for some of those scenes. So, there's that. But I'd love to see Vance's version. She was equally good at drama as she was in comedy.

by Anonymousreply 66July 22, 2021 2:34 AM

R66 was for R65, obviously. I shouldn't try to multi-task while typing.

by Anonymousreply 67July 22, 2021 2:37 AM

Mrs. Van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank. Although with this film, as with Picnic, Lucille (screw)Ball probably wouldn't have given her the time off from ILL to film the movie.

by Anonymousreply 68July 22, 2021 2:39 AM

Mrs. Babish on Laverne and Shirley.

by Anonymousreply 69July 22, 2021 2:47 AM

RIZZO in Grease

by Anonymousreply 70July 22, 2021 2:52 AM

The lady in the radiator

by Anonymousreply 71July 22, 2021 3:05 AM

She would have been great as Martha Levinson, Shirley MacLaine's role in DOWNTON ABBEY.

Viv would have cut Maggie Smith down to size.

by Anonymousreply 72July 22, 2021 6:49 AM

She could have played Rosemary Woodhouse and given birth to a fiery red headed she devil

by Anonymousreply 73July 22, 2021 10:34 AM

Her physical decline is sad to view:

Agree with someone up-thread: had she lived, she'd have offered a brilliant take on Dorothy Z.

no, not even Uncle Arthur could have had a wife

[quote]I will never understand why they chose Rita Hayworth over Vivian, for Miss Sadie Thompson.

Speaking of Sada Thompson, she would've been much better as Kate on "Family." Her cold "I've sufficient" would've taught that mooch Willie a thing or too.

by Anonymousreply 78July 22, 2021 11:42 AM

M's roles. Only better.

by Anonymousreply 79July 22, 2021 11:46 AM

Alex Forrest

Annie Wilkes

Nurse Ratched

by Anonymousreply 80July 22, 2021 11:50 AM

Could she have done the Angela Lansbury role in Manchurian Candidate? She has such a warm, likable voice, it would be interesting to see it juxtaposed with cold, sociopathic language.

by Anonymousreply 81July 22, 2021 11:55 AM

Belle Watling

by Anonymousreply 82July 22, 2021 12:02 PM

[quote]Speaking of Sada Thompson, she would've been much better as Kate on "Family." Her cold "I've sufficient" would've taught that mooch Willie a thing or too.

And she would have told Miss Tovah Feldshuh where to get off right quick. No passive-aggressive Kate with our Viv!

by Anonymousreply 83July 22, 2021 7:59 PM

She almost had her own show

by Anonymousreply 84July 23, 2021 10:44 AM

Yes, [R42], I could see her as Martha. "I thought I'd bust a gut...." I can hear her saying it.

by Anonymousreply 85July 23, 2021 11:59 AM

Oda Mae Brown in "Ghost"

by Anonymousreply 86July 24, 2021 1:52 AM

She could've been Lucy's neighbor and friend, Mary Jane Lewis, on "The Lucy Show"

by Anonymousreply 87July 24, 2021 1:56 AM

She could have been the landlady that throws Lucy out of her apartment in Stone Pillow.

by Anonymousreply 88July 24, 2021 2:36 AM

Marry me, r88

by Anonymousreply 89July 24, 2021 10:38 AM

Jessica Fletcher.

by Anonymousreply 90July 24, 2021 11:06 AM

Jessica Fletcher? No way? Viv would NEVER indulge in all that mugging that Lansbury relies on to get by.

by Anonymousreply 91July 24, 2021 11:08 AM

I think she'd have made a good Lola in Come Back, Little Sheba

by Anonymousreply 92July 24, 2021 11:16 AM

Molly Brown

by Anonymousreply 93July 24, 2021 6:44 PM

Madame Arcati. She'd be great.

The Animagic version of herself in any Rankin Bass holiday special.

by Anonymousreply 95July 24, 2021 7:50 PM

She and Lucy would have been fun in Arsenic and Old Lace. Of course, it would scream I Love Lucy. But it would be fun.

Medusa.

by Anonymousreply 97July 25, 2021 1:51 PM

Miss Hannigan in Annie. Vera Charles. Remember, her background was in musical theatre.

by Anonymousreply 99July 25, 2021 2:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 100July 25, 2021 2:21 PM

I too, would have loved to see her as Lola in Come Back, Little Sheeba.

by Anonymousreply 101July 25, 2021 2:38 PM

Both Viv and William Inge were from Independence, KS, coincidentally
