R7 Ditto. Personal Jesus.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 14, 2021 3:15 PM |
Because I love the video and the sexiness of the song I want to say "I Feel You", but really it's the Martin Gore led "Home" from "Ultra".

OP This thread makes my day.

This remix of 'A Pain That I'm Used To' - but all the early period Depeche Mode singles hold special places in my heart as they shaped my early teenage years. The video to 'See You' takes me back to shopping for 45s in 'Woolies' on a Saturday morning, furtively checking out cute guys.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 14, 2021 3:23 PM |
Excellent choice, R3. I love that song!
A sentimental favorite for me is Never Let Me Down Again. I had just got to Paris in 1987 for a year abroad in undergrad. This song was popular in France that fall. It always makes me think of Paris.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 14, 2021 3:29 PM |
R11 - Home would be my choice too.
Been a fan since I heard New Life in 1981 and I've bought every single the day it came out since Get The Balance Right way back in 1983. Most of the albums since Ultra have been mediocre at best, although Spirit had some good stuff.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 14, 2021 3:34 PM |
Sorry, meant R10
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 14, 2021 3:35 PM |
Strangelove is my favorite song.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 14, 2021 3:35 PM |
Violator was the soundtrack of my life for a year or two in the early 90s. Personal Jesus is great but Enjoy The Silence was my favorite
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 14, 2021 3:45 PM |
The one about “Princess Di is wearing a new dress.”
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 14, 2021 3:46 PM |
Depeche Commode
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 14, 2021 3:47 PM |
Never let me down again is my favorite song and I loved the video set in Denmark. The rose bowl performance was amazing.
The trifecta of black celebrations, music for the masses and violator was their peak.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 14, 2021 3:49 PM |
It's really hard to pick between Black Celebration and Music for the Masses. But, if pressed it would be Black Celebration, with Ultra as a third.

Album: Black Celebration Song: But Not Tonight
Not a fan of much of the stuff post Alan Wilder.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 15, 2021 3:08 AM |
They all say it's their least favorite song, but I love "What's Your Name" because I can't believe a group of straight guys could sing anything so gay, Oh but wait - they're English.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 15, 2021 3:20 AM |
R24 me too, total ear worm! But in a good way.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 15, 2021 7:31 AM |
Just Can’t Get Enough sounds like a song left over for Alison, they even sing it Alisonesque.

You don't count Songs of Faith and Devotion?
That's my favotite, and In your room is favotite song. But i love all their albums they did with Alan Wilder. Such a great group. Saw them live in Mad Cool Madrid and Dave Gahan was pinging as crazy.

DL fave Jimmy Somerville sings But Not Tonight
Happy Pride!!
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 15, 2021 11:45 AM |
Album would be Black Celebration, but for song I'm torn between "A Pain That I'm Used To" and the aforementioned "But Not Tonight."
Even my beloved Scott Weiland was a fan . . .
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 15, 2021 2:13 PM |
I'm with you, R32, I would include Songs of Faith and Devotion in their peak period, after which they began to lose me.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 15, 2021 2:17 PM |
In high school, I had forgotten to write a book report. I made up a book "Blasphemous Rumors" by Martin Gore, and wrote in study hall. Plot was the song. Got a B.

Halo - Goldfrapp Remix
At times, I definitely feel that I wear guilt, like shackles on my feet, like a halo in reverse.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 18, 2021 4:39 AM |
Random DM thoughts. I always thought Martin and Fletch were a couple. Dave also seemed very gay-I suspect he is pansexual. Alan always seemed straight. A lot of people don’t know Martin is part AfricanAmerican. He doesn’t talk about it much. When Alan was in the band in their peak and before they added the guitar, the set-up of three keyboard players on Emulator 2 samplers was an awesome sight. It was such a rejection of typical rock.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 18, 2021 5:14 AM |
I’ve always been a big DM fan. At our wedding, we had a quartet play Strangelove as we signed our vows.

Album - A Broken Frame
Song - Domino Dancing
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 18, 2021 5:38 AM |
I like ‘behind the wheel’ I remember hearing the album being blasted out from a venue in Chicago near millennium Park one warm summer’s day a few years ago. It left an impression on me.

Fantastic thread OP. Depeche Mode were the soundtrack of my early life with (gasp!) Madonna since I discovered as a gayling I Just Can’t get enough and the very daring Master and Servant. I then dutifully followed them, buying every album until they lost me with Ultra which was a bit too noisy for me. I jumped back on the bandwagon with Playing the Angel and looked at the back catalogue I had missed, including the masterpiece Exciter. I went to see them at the London O2 for Touring the Angel and have to say I felt my age. Everybody was in their late 30’s, early 40’s! Lol.
Since then their albums have been unequal, with a few real gems, and a lot of fillers. If you like Depeche Mode and Goldfrapp, I recommend Golfrapp’s Ocean featuring Dave Gahan. A fabulous song.

R43 - I don't remember DM doing a cover of the Pet Shop Boys' "Domino Dancing."
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 18, 2021 9:48 AM |
My favorite has always been “Enjoy the Silence”.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 18, 2021 10:29 AM |
“Words like violence break the silence” definitely ranks up there in the top ten lyrics phrases of all times.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 18, 2021 10:44 AM |
I love "Everything Counts". Perfect 80's song with a message.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 18, 2021 10:48 AM |
I loved their song ‘Precious’
by Anonymous | reply 51 | June 18, 2021 12:58 PM |
Album - Music for the Masses
My favourite songs include "Enjoy the Silence", "Somebody" and "People are People".
by Anonymous | reply 52 | July 9, 2021 10:56 PM |
Another vote for Shake the Disease, but I also love Question of Lust.
One of my first concerts was Depeche Mode, and I loved how Personal Jesus plays in real life. I still remember how it reverberated throughout the dark arena. It was powerful.

Everybody Hurts
by Anonymous | reply 55 | July 9, 2021 11:08 PM |
I'm a huge fan. I grew up listening to strange love, enjoy the silence etc...I know all the words...still. I never saw them in concert until a few years ago, Dave Gahan is so good live!
If you look at the music videos when they were young, Dave is so gay! But he's from Europe...kind of hard to tell.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | July 9, 2021 11:09 PM |
They all looked kind of gay back then especially when Martin was wearing a dress.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | July 9, 2021 11:47 PM |
^^ was queerbaiting even a thing in the early '80s? ^^
by Anonymous | reply 59 | July 10, 2021 1:45 AM |
A lot of British musicians tried to look sexually ambiguous in the 1980's.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | July 10, 2021 1:57 AM |
yes, nick rodes pinged to me
by Anonymous | reply 61 | July 10, 2021 2:00 AM |
R59 Queerbaiting was done in the 1980's to drive teen girls wild in order to increase sales. It had certainly helped David Bowie's career.

Favorite song: the album version of In Your Room Favorite album: Violator (basic I know)
Absolutely tremendous band.

But Not Tonight is my favorite song but Violator is my fave album.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | July 10, 2021 2:28 AM |
So, if the question was albums, the winners seem to be Construction Time Again and A Broken Frame?
by Anonymous | reply 65 | July 10, 2021 2:37 AM |
R62, I don't know if Bowie would have been considered a queer baiter since he wasn't straight in the first place.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | July 10, 2021 2:47 AM |
Personal Jesus.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | July 10, 2021 3:12 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 69 | July 10, 2021 5:26 AM |
R60 - I want to see a clip of Duran Duran behaving like the guys in DM in that clip @ R58. Looking sexually ambiguous and acting that way are two different things.
Why are some people (R55 & R69) blurting out REM titles?
by Anonymous | reply 70 | July 10, 2021 9:08 AM |
R70 part two- because they’re running Out of Time?
by Anonymous | reply 71 | July 10, 2021 11:48 AM |
To chose one of their albums over others is an impossible task considering how much their music evolved over the years.
Of their early albums I’d chose “A broken frame”. Absolute masterpiece and already a 180 degrees turn compared to their previous one, the poppy “Speak and Spell”. I’d also pick the album that made them global superstars, “Music for the masses”. I was a teenager at that time and played this album on repeat for maybe a year or two. I think it was the second CD I ever bought (True Blue being the first!). “Violator” of course was the transition towards an edgier, heavier sound, while retaining some synth pop elements (“Enjoy the Silence”). “Exciter” saw them going back to that sound after 2 albums I have very little time for. Of the later production, “Sounds of the Universe” and “Delta Machine” contain real gems, but a lot of fillers too. I think they’ve kind of exhausted their inspiration now, but what a career and what a legacy!

It’s a Question of Lust.

Besides Dave’s heroin addiction, they stay largely out of the tabloids.
