Passions

Was this the best soap ever? Tabitha should be a camp icon

The elitist queens on here hated it

by Anonymousreply 3June 14, 2021 3:46 PM

I loved it when I got the chance to watch it, which was usually in the summer. The eye-candy was wonderful but the writing and acting as laughable.

The story arc I remember best is the earthquake and tsunami that hit Harmony.

It was pure camp, created and written by that fat queen who was Days if Our Lives headwriter during its ultra campy, super gay, supernatural mid 90s period, James E. Reilly

Ron Carlivati is the Dollar Store version of JER

Making a connection between Sheridan and the late Princess Diana was bold. In the first week, Sheridan is speeding through the tunnel being chased and she cries out 'they killed Diana and now, they're going to kill ME!'

I didn't know who this woman was but i wanted to see if she was going to make it out of the tunnel and I prayed Rachel Davis Matthews Clark Frame Cory Cory Cory Hutchins would forgive me.

But then, the next year Princess Diana's death anniversary comes and goes and Sheridan doesn't even mention her good friend; cheap ploy.

Nothing ever climaxed on this show. Reilly laughed all the way to the bank. The show lowballed actors and passed on some names who might have been able to elevate the writing (though probably not).

They should have kept AW or even Sunset Beach.

by Anonymousreply 12June 22, 2021 3:03 AM

It was not the best soap ever; but it did have some memorable moments.

It's musical extravaganzas were by far the best. They should have produced a DVD of those.

Days if Our Lives headwriter during its ultra campy, super gay, supernatural mid 90s period,

Marlene being possesed, Susan and her evil twin sister and little Elvis, and the nun....it was great

by Anonymousreply 16June 22, 2021 3:11 AM

If the guy who played "Vincent" had been hotter, I think the gay press would have been all over Vincent's initial "downlow" relationship with Chad.

But as I recall, the whole thing was basically ignored.

And regardless of how the storyline eventually evolved into Vincent being reveled to also be "Valerie" and intersexual, the audience didn't know that fact for quite some time.

So what viewers were originally presented with was two male actors, playing male characters, naked in bed, and looking like they were having anal sex while spooning.

It was really quite astonishing for daytime.

by Anonymousreply 17June 22, 2021 3:49 AM

The first episode I saw was around Christmas time. Tabitha had rigged the town square Christmas Tree with a bomb, that she was going to launch during the annual tree lighting ceremony. Didn't Vincent become pregnant with his father's baby? (That was a weird question to type.)

Ethan: Theresa, I know why you're always standing around my door, watching when I leave and enter my house.

Theresa: (scared). You do?

Ethan: It's because you're converting from Catholicism to become a Jehovah's Witness.

Theresa: Oh....yeah. Right!

by Anonymousreply 18June 22, 2021 4:07 AM

R16, it's going to be great again.

by Anonymousreply 19June 22, 2021 4:13 AM

Passion' version of Chicago's "Cell Block Tango" was my favorite musical number they did, but it seems to have been taken down at youtube now.

Their Bollywood episode was very entertaining, though, as well. Great imitation of the genre. There's more than one musical number within, but the fun starts when troublemaker Theresa shows up at 3:14 mark.

Passions was good for what it was, but I’m afraid it harmed soaps. For many young people it was their first and only soap and was so outrageous the other soaps didn’t interest them.

Too bad they never got Witchiepoo to do a visit to Harmony.

Would have loved to see Tabitha and Witchiepoo trade barbs.

I'm sure James Reilly thought about doing it, but likely couldn't get the rights to the characters. Billie Hayes, who played Witchiepoo was still alive at that point; I'm sure she would have been game.

by Anonymousreply 23June 22, 2021 6:32 AM

No, it was not the best soap ever. For most of it's run, it was crap. It had it's moments, but overall, it was crap.

by Anonymousreply 24June 22, 2021 6:44 AM

I started watching towards the end when Chad and Whitney found out they were related and Whitney entered a convent. Beth was sleeping with Alistair who turned out to be her father and everyone found out that Alistair had an affair with Mrs. Wallace. Then Mrs. Wallace wound up in Italy with her cell mate and they were in a lesbian relationship. Then there was some girl Siren who was a siren.

And Precious, Mrs. Wallace’s chimp.

by Anonymousreply 25June 22, 2021 6:49 AM

Show may not have been the best soap on the air, but it sure had some great eye candy.

by Anonymousreply 26June 22, 2021 7:27 AM

How did Tabitha manage to land Grease 2 hunk Max Caufield as her husband? Did she use black magic? Bargain with her friends in the basement? Was it a Hugh Jackman-Debra Furness situation?

What did people think about Lisa Huber(Gwen Hotchkiss)? She is Susan Lucci's daughter how do you think she compared to her mother? I thought for sure that the Daytime Emmy's would end up nominating her, at some point, to juice the ratings, since SL's streak was broken, what better than mother and daughter in the same category? Alas, her time did not come. Was it her talent or the Emmy's anti Passions bias? You decide.

by Anonymousreply 43June 24, 2021 1:59 AM

Lisa Huber was pretty amateurish, and I always thought they must've hired her as some kind of attempt to make Lindsay Korman look like she was a halfway decent actress.

One thing I loved about Passions is they would give older actors who were pushed aside at their former shows a role. The only time i really watched was Robin Strasser's run as Hecuba. And, I caught a little of the late John Reilly's Alister Crane.

by Anonymousreply 46June 24, 2021 2:58 AM

Passions got very few Daytime Emmy nods during its 8 years on the air.

The ones it got were:

Best Actress -- Juliet Mills (Tabitha)

Best Younger Actor -- Josh Ryan Evans (Timmy)

Best Supporting Actor -- James Stevenson (Jared Casey)

Each of the above was nominated a single time and obviously did not win.

The only other actors I can imagine possibly getting an acting nod for Passions would have been Ben Masters (Julian) and Justin Hartley (Fox).

by Anonymousreply 47June 24, 2021 3:24 AM

Didn't they try to get the chimp nominated for an Emmy?

by Anonymousreply 48June 24, 2021 4:20 AM

A lot of former ABC Daytime stars eñded up on Passions

Andrea Evans (Tina from OLTL), Robin Strasser (Dorian from OLTL), John Reilly and the actress who played Tiffany on GH, Kathleen Noone (Ellen from AMC) etc.

the kinkiest most homoerotic storylines!

the blackmailer storyline for instance: he/she ties up and blindfolds a nude ethan and fondles him and kisses him... he drugs luis and actually masturbates him while he's unconscious, so he can get his cum to put up into fancy's vagina to make it look like he's the rapist!...the blackmailer has sex with his own father while he's a "woman" and gets pregnant since he is a she with inner female sex organs!

luis and miguel in prison!

and it went on and on and on and on with this soap! awesome!

Loved when the hot guys on the show would be in a coma… shirtless… lying there for weeks, their musculature never atrophying.

by Anonymousreply 60June 24, 2021 2:24 PM

On the newsgroup rec.arts.tv.soaps someone used to keep track of how many days had passed on the show since January 1. I seem to remember only a couple dozen or fewer days passing each year. This meant the characters wore the same outfits for weeks or months at a time. I don't know if this was to assist the storylines or to slash the clothing budget. Hopefully they cleaned the actors' clothing frequently.

by Anonymousreply 61June 24, 2021 4:12 PM

I hated this show with a.......passion.

But I got what Reilly was going for. He didn't quite land it and it could be a big mess. At a half hour it might have been a tight little absurdist comic soap.

by Anonymousreply 62June 24, 2021 4:14 PM

I remember seeing Josh Ryan Evans (Timmy) win an award on some awards show. He thanked "the three women in my life: my mother, my grandmother, and my witch!" It seems as if he was close with his frequent scene partner, Juliet Mills. In the finale, the camera closes on the cast, and Juliet Mills is holding a framed photo of him. That was kind of fitting, because she often carried him around on the show.

by Anonymousreply 63June 24, 2021 4:16 PM

McCarty is also a deplorable.

Travis and Natalie mentioned on their podcast that Ben Masters is completely off the grid and no one from the cast has heard from him in like 10 years.

by Anonymousreply 64June 24, 2021 4:21 PM

The original Kay, Taylor Ann Mountz, was great as the teen bitch. A much better actress than Lindsay Korman. It was rumored Taylor got pregnant by a castmate (Jesse?) and her parents forced her to leave the show after year one. Never heard of her again. In some ways, Passions was brilliant. In others, it was mindnumbingly stupid. I think it was most hurt by the inability to get solid acting talent and retain what little acting talent they had.

James E. Reilly is a genius, and Passions his imperfect masterpiece. But his first tenure on Days of Our Lives remains his best work.

by Anonymousreply 68June 24, 2021 4:48 PM

The obsession with rape in the last couple years was...creepy. It was like every other week some woman was raped or almost raped.

by Anonymousreply 69June 24, 2021 4:50 PM

Didn’t Vincent cut his father’s penis off?

by Anonymousreply 70June 24, 2021 4:51 PM

R51 that storyline was so over the top and could never happen now. The giddy Valerie proclaimed to Julian (i.e. his/her dad), “I can’t wait to have SEX with you daddy,” while Eve eavesdropped helplessly and thought, “Valerie is Vincent!!!”

by Anonymousreply 71June 24, 2021 4:51 PM

IIRC, the actress who played Eve wanted to leave the show over the Valerie/Julian / Daddy pregnancy storyline.

by Anonymousreply 72June 24, 2021 6:24 PM

I got the idea that they didn't really expect viewers to watch every day, because so often scenes and conversations would be repeated one day after another with just some minor changes in the breakdown and dialogue.

by Anonymousreply 86June 24, 2021 10:49 PM

Here is the thing about rape and soaps. Soaps borrowed heavily from romance novels "bodice ripper" tropes. Women being "taken" by men; out of control passion, where a "reluctant" woman says no, but really means yes.

Personally, I've always thought that soaps had a clear line as to what was rape and what wasn't rape -- even though that line was sometimes blurry, but the world has changed and now almost every fucking thing is rape.

And finally, Passions was a throwback to the days of classic (pre Luke and Laura) soap opera. The slow pacing, the repetitiveness, some of the questionable acting, clearly defined good and bad characters, and the girl from the wrong side of the tracks looing for her come up was about as classic soap as you can get. All Jim Reilly did was take As the World Turns circa 1960, mixed in a little Dark Shadows and a little Melrose Place with some pretty models and made a soap.

The thing about Jim Reilly was that he was unapologetically a soap opera fan. He was writing soap opera. He was proud to be writing soap opera. He spoofed other genres to get the show attention, but he was never trying to be other genres.

by Anonymousreply 87June 25, 2021 3:17 AM

Very insightful post r87. Thanks.

I think the thing that did Passions the most harm was the 60 minute running time. Could likely have succeeded if it has started as a 30 minute show sandwiched between Days of Our Lives and Another World.

by Anonymousreply 88June 25, 2021 3:25 AM

Josh Ryan Evans (Timmy the Doll) also got a Daytime Emmy nomination in the Younger Actor category.

by Anonymousreply 93June 25, 2021 5:01 AM

R87 I wasn't even talking about "grey area, maybe she wanted it" rape. Anyone who watched Passions towards the end knows what I mean. They had characters getting drugged, attacked while they slept, etc etc.

Another recurring theme on Passions is sexual violence. Many storylines, especially since 2005, have included rape as a plot point.

In 2005, Paloma Lopez-Fitzgerald was sexually assaulted and nearly raped during a club raid. The show then carried a plotline over whether they should do a rape test while Paloma was in a coma (at the time she was a virgin) and Jessica Bennett was also raped a few weeks later while at a club. Also early in the year, Alistair Crane repeatedly raped his wife, Katherine Crane, while at the Crane Compound. Late in May, heiress Fancy Crane was nearly raped by a man in Las Vegas who demanded "payment" for letting her into a party after she lost her invitation. During the tsunami and later in November, Liz Sanbourne attempted to rape Julian Crane at knife point. In August, Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald was raped by Alistair Crane when she refused to pay him (with sex) for helping her with visitation of her infant daughter, Jane; Theresa later married Alistair, and he continued to rape her throughout their marriage. Also in August or September, Kay Bennett was attacked by a gang of men while walking through the park at night, though Fox Crane soon arrived and the two defeated the group. Liz Sanbourne also revealed during the tsunami that Julian Crane had raped her in Boston many years previously (she later revealed that it had been Alistair who had done the deed, thus producing a son, Chad Harris-Crane).

The most prominent rape storyline began in December 2006, when Crane heiress and police cadet Fancy Crane was raped during a sting operation designed to catch a peeping tom. The brutal attack left Fancy in a brief coma and emotionally traumatized the young woman. Fancy was also the show's first rape victim to visibly experience prolonged effects; her bubbly demeanor disappeared, and she became extremely nervous and could not stand to be touched for several months. Fancy was eventually raped for a second time in January 2007, and her boyfriend, Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald, was framed for the crimes; the rapist was later revealed to be Vincent Clarkson, Fancy's paternal half-brother through their father.

Rape also played prominently into the 2007—2008 storyline involving Mexican drug cartel leader Juanita Vasquez. Sometime between the births of Pilar's second and third children, the Lopez-Fitzgerald matriarch returned to her native Mexico to visit with her childhood best friend, Juanita Vasquez. There, she discovered that Juanita's husband, Carlos, was still involved with his family's drug cartel and was planning a hit on a rival family; when Pilar confronted Carlos, he raped her, and she accidentally killed him in self-defense. Pilar then called the police in an attempt to stop the hit, but the police ended up murdering the entire Vasquez family, including Juanita and Carlos' young children, except for Juanita. Juanita refused to believe that her husband had raped Pilar and made it her life's mission to murder Pilar's entire family, eventually murdering Pilar's sister and two nephews.

by Anonymousreply 95June 25, 2021 6:18 AM

In the final few years, the ratings for Passions were so low, they were trying everything they could to boost the ratings and keep the show alive. Thus, all the "extreme" storylines that most shows would avoid hoping they would draw an audience in. That included many sexual assault and rape storyline and the kinky one of Vincent being pregnant by his/her own father.

and of course Adrian had the much better body than Jessie..... loved his scenes at the prison, seduced by the mermaid character and her siren song, and the other scenes of him shirtless, under a spell, etc.. There was also the episode and the very homoerotic scene where his competition dreamt of killing him off, and you see Adrian in a shower with his back turned away from the other guy and while he was of course wearing something, whatever he was wearing was worn VERY LOW to where the viewer could actually see the beginning of his ass in that shower stall... very sexy erotic stuff! not to mention in the other guy's fantasy, he has adrian/miguel turn around, as he opens the shower stall, not seeing adrian/miguel fully nude and throws in a hair dryer to electrocute adrian/miguel... not turned on by that kind of violence (although stupid), but the rest of the scene is pure homoeroticism!

by Anonymousreply 100June 25, 2021 9:51 AM

R87 good post. Reilly was super talented and I think that’s a great description of what he did. He definitely always moved things at a glacial pace, but he was really good at making it *seem* like things were moving on a day to day basis. But I think it worked because things were beat into your head with constant repetition. (On the flip side, I remember almost nothing about the last decade of ATWT because the pace was so fast that nothing meant anything.)

His Days was eminently watchable, and he was a master of build-up, but his stint did lasting damage to the show's characters (all of whom lost 30 IQ points under his tenure) and the show's fabric (hard to tell the human stories that were always soaps' bread and butter after you've had your lead character morphing into a black panther). The fact that he was so successful didn't do the soap genre any favors, either.

R105 You may be right about his GL. I can’t say for sure because I didn’t see much of it, but what I’ve seen of it on YouTube is excellent.

But I disagree that he did lasting damage to DAYS because DAYS would not still be on the air if not for him. He took it from the ratings basement to a full 2 ratings points higher, the last time any US soap has gone up in the ratings and not down.

It’s true that soaps tried to copy him and did it badly, which hurt the genre. But the genre’s failure to modernize was not his fault.

by Anonymousreply 106June 25, 2021 3:00 PM

I call bullshit on that. Jim Reilly inherited a show where international spies and megalomaniacs had bases of operations in a small midwestern town. Where serial killers popped up every couple of years. Putting the devil in Marlena was no more outlandish than Stefano returning from the dead for the one millionth time. It was no more outlandish then multiple personalities on other soaps or feuding multi-national cosmetics companies in small midwestern towns.

I've always been fascinated about where soap fans are willing to draw the line.

As for hurting the genre, blame writers and producers who just copy instead of innovate, that's what really hurt the genre.

by Anonymousreply 107June 25, 2021 3:04 PM

Reilly made DOOL must see during OJ. Yes, it was horrendous to trash what was once a GREAT show (mid 60's to mid 70's only). I used to think if someone like Denise Alexander were still at DAYS, she would have never agreed to the dialogue they might give her, then I remembered the Port Charles freeze on GH in early 80's, and poor Denise was at the Nurses Station agreeing with Jessie that it was strange it was snowing in August.

That isn't entirely true. There have been other times since then when a soaps ratings have improved from year to year. Though I do think it was the last time one show's ranking improved as much as DAYS under him.

R5 where can you watch Passions online?

R114 Yes and no. In it's last three seasons OLTL went from 1.9 to 2.0 to 2.1, it might have continued to increase or to have maintained it's increase but it was cancelled so we will never know.

by Anonymousreply 116June 25, 2021 6:28 PM

R116 I definitely thought ABC made a mistake canceling OLTL instead of GH. OLTL seemed to have momentum at that time. It was a shame.

That "Passions Complete Collection" channel at Dailymotion linked at R40, doesn't seem complete, and it's awfully difficult to navigate. .. Does one have to join DM to get some other view of the videos and or a playlist that allows better search capabilities? .. I have episode numbers and dates for a few episodes I'd like to watch, and the results are zero. .. I've tried both DM's search and done a google advanced search for the site, and the results are always "nothing found." I only see four playlists for the first four months in 1999, so everything else seems rather unorganized.

R119 The Dailymotion channel is just a come-on to buy bootleg DVDs?

by Anonymousreply 120June 25, 2021 8:39 PM

What’s the problem with bootlegs? It’s not like NBC will ever release it to a streaming service

by Anonymousreply 121June 25, 2021 8:48 PM

I admit I watch the occasional clip on YouTube, but who the fuck would ever need to own whole episodes of Passions. 75% of the show was filler and recap.

by Anonymousreply 122June 25, 2021 8:50 PM

R121 I didn't indicate there was any "problem" with it. That route just isn't for me. Have at it.

by Anonymousreply 123June 25, 2021 9:04 PM

R121 that’s what I don’t understand they own it and they own a streaming service, why not put it on it to both bulk up content and make a few bucks, instead of letting it sit there and not make any. The same is true of ABC with OLTL and AMC. It might not make them a fortune but it is basically free money.

R103, r104…I made tomato soup cake twice, just because of ‘Passions.”

by Anonymousreply 130June 26, 2021 5:51 AM

Rotten.com used to have a hilarious writeup of Passions.

The fantasy sequences were a hoot. They'd go on forever and ever and have you believe that storylines were finally going somewhere - anywhere - but nope, it was all in Eve's head. Or the fakeouts. A character thinking they were "discovered" and freaking out in scene after scene, for it to finally be revealed as a misunderstanding.

Rotten described it as watching 4 year old playing with dolls.

by Anonymousreply 131June 26, 2021 6:44 AM

I remember one early storyline where Sheridan was kidnapped by Beth and her Lesbian lover who both decided to toss her body into the ocean. I remember Sheridan being underwater for dozens of episodes before they finally found her! She miscarried during the whole scenario and was brought back to life at the hospital……after being submerged underwater……….for over 4 hours. 😆

by Anonymousreply 132June 26, 2021 11:00 AM

R132 she was buried alive for WEEKS at one time, helping to nail a French drug ring. Luis grieved over her. In the story it was ONE DAY that took four weeks. Ethan and Gwen's engagement party was happening at the same time.

by Anonymousreply 133June 26, 2021 12:27 PM

I think at it's worst, at TWoP, we counted the passing of 8 days over the course of a year

by Anonymousreply 134June 26, 2021 1:59 PM

Very slow moving even for a soap

by Anonymousreply 135June 26, 2021 7:39 PM

I used to wonder how the actors kept the dialogue straight from one script to another, since so often the scenes from one episode to the next were very repetitious, yet different enough in some way, which you'd think would cause confusion. .. Maybe it didn't matter as long as they got from point A to point Z.

by Anonymousreply 136June 26, 2021 10:02 PM

At the time Passions was airing I had a job and living situation where I could watch it most afternoons. It was super campy but fun, with great eye candy. What I remember most is that for the time period I was watching regularly Sheridan was kidnapped and held in a hole in the ground. I think Beth was holding her captive. I remember thinking at the time "she's STILL in that damned hole"?

Also Timmy and Tabitha were a hoot. I remember something about Evil Charity. I had to wiki the characters and lost track of all the twists and turns of the plot, let alone the actors changing. but it was good campy fun.

by Anonymousreply 137June 27, 2021 2:54 AM

D137 that was Reilly replaying one his greatest hits of Vivian burying Carly alive on DAYS.

by Anonymousreply 138June 27, 2021 7:41 AM

I love Aunt Irma

by Anonymousreply 139June 29, 2021 3:54 AM

One thing I remember, but I'm not sure how often it happened, would be that a character's dream sequence would be going on in real time. Okay, so say there's an episode with three storylines. You've got the Tabitha, Timmy, Charity & Miguel and Kay stuff going on. Then you've got the Rebecca or Eve/Julian/Ivy/Sam/Grace and T.C. stuff going on. Then you might have either Sheridan & Luis or Theresa/Ethan/Gwen. (If a fourth storyline is going on, it's probably Whitney and Chad.) A lot of times in the early days, you'd get a scene where Sheridan & Luis or Theresa and Ethan's relationship progresses farther than it did before. Cut back to the other stories, then back to the romance, and at about 20 minutes into the episode, PSYCH! The romance stuff was just a dream (and another third of an episode was filler).

by Anonymousreply 140June 29, 2021 4:10 AM

I heard Reilly had said that if any soap mag made fun of the show especially related to the early Princess Diana stuff he'd cut them off.

but honestly, the show was mostly made fun of. and, as another poster noted, no Emmy noms to speak of; no acting wins; Reilly never climaxed any story the way he did Kristen's comeuppance or Carrie smacking Sami on DAYS

by Anonymousreply 141June 29, 2021 6:02 AM

If you can stand listening to Alan Locher, he's doing a "Passions" reunion on his youtube channel, on Friday, July 9.

[quote] Cast members from NBC's Passions will join me live in The Locher Room on Friday, July 9th at 3 p.m. EST / 12 p.m. PST for a reunion. Joining me to reminisce about their time spent in Harmony are Charles Divins (Chad-Harris Crane), Galen Gering (Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald), Lindsay Korman-Hartley (Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald), Brook Kerr (Whitney Russell), Eric Martsolf (Ethan Winthrop) and McKenzie Westmore (Sheridan Crane).

The usual suspects.

In some ways, Passions was a parody of the soaps. I was addicted to it.

It was arch and OTT.

And what about Naomi?
