[quote] If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.

Even political rights, like the right to vote, and nearly all other rights enumerated in the Constitution, are secondary to the inalienable human rights to ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence; and to this category the right to home and marriage unquestionably belongs.” - Hannah Arendt

r219 So the answer is ... Longfellow made it up (although the facts were accurate.)
by Anonymous | reply 221 | June 18, 2021 2:24 AM |
Longfellow was writing as the storm grew for the Civil War. There was no draft, part of his motivation was to make individuals believe that they alone could change and effect history and that fighting for a just cause was important. If you read the account throughly you realize that many were involved, most importantly Dawes.
Revere gets stopped and caught, he doesn’t continue onward saying the “British are coming!” which wouldn’t have been said at all. It would have been the red backs or the red coats. Longfellow is using that famous poetic license to tell the story he wants to tell. As with most literature understanding the time it was written in is important to fully understanding the intent and meaning of what the writer wrote.
When I would teach this to my fourth graders I started with an accurate historical account of what happened. Then I would read the Longfellow poem and we would compare the two. Then I would ask them wouldn’t it be great to hear what Paul Revere would have said. At that point I would introduce primary documents and read his deposition. We then would discuss all of it including the fact that the colonists were terrorist going against the government. And that history is written by the victors.

R286: It could be. I love it because it's enigmatic and yet somehow specific and definite. It's from The Waves, from one of the six soliloquies of a sort, one that more than anything, I suppose, looks to how the writer and her mind work.
Woolf lived in quite a few places in London, many of them Georgian squares. She was very interested in architecture and discussed the quote in relation to those Georgian squares at one point, and a lot of architectural writers like the quote for that reason. But read some of her own words at the link about visiting Stonehenge at age 21 (1903) and it seems all part of the same thing.
[quote]‘”Like” and “like” and “like”–but what is the thing that lies beneath the semblance of the thing? Now that lightning has gashed the tree and the flowering branch has fallen and Percival, by his death, has made me this gift, let me see the thing. There is a square; there is an oblong. The players take the square and place it upon the oblong. They place it very accurately; they make a perfect dwelling-place. Very little is left outside. The structure is now visible; what is inchoate is here stated; we are not so various or so mean; we have made oblongs and stood them upon squares. This is our triumph; this is our consolation.

Atheistic existentialism, which I represent, is more coherent. It states that if God does not exist, there is at least one being in whom existence precedes essence, a being who exists before he can be defined by any concept, and that this being is man, or, as Heidegger says, human reality. What is meant here by saying that existence precedes essence? It means that, first of all, man exists, turns up, appears on the scene, and, only afterwards, defines himself. If man, as the existentialist conceives him, is indefinable, it is because at first he is nothing. Only afterward will he be something, and he himself will have made what he will be. Thus, there is no human nature, since there is no God to conceive it. Not only is man what he conceives himself to be, but he is also only what he wills himself to be after this thrust toward existence.
Man is nothing else but what he makes of himself
JP Sartre
